A word on AIPPI

The International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, generally known under the acronym “AIPPI”, is the world’s leading international organisation dedicated to the development and improvement of intellectual property.

AIPPI is a non-affi liated, non-profi t organization headquartered in Switzerland, having approximately 9,000 members representing over 100 countries. The members of AIPPI include lawyers, attorneys, and agents, work-ing across all fi elds of intellectual property in corporate and private practice throughout the world, as well as academics, judges, government offi cials and other persons interested in intellectual property. AIPPI is organ-ized into 66 National and Regional Groups.

The objective of AIPPI is to improve and promote the protection of intellectual property at both national and international levels. It does this by studying and comparing existing and proposed laws and policies relating to intellectual property, and working with both government and non-government organisations for the develop-ment, expansion and improvement of international and regional treaties and agreements, and national laws.

AIPPI operates by conducting studies of existing national laws and policies, and proposes measures to promote best practices and achieve international harmonisation of law, policy and practice. In this context, AIPPI has become increasingly involved with defi ning well balanced systems for protecting and enforcing intellectual property rights.

Congress Programme

AIPPI Congresses take place every year.

Congresses are open only to AIPPI members. Normally, about 2000 members attend with around 500 accom-panying persons. After Milano, forthcoming Congress venues include Sydney (2017), Cancun (2018), Istanbul (2019), Hangzhou (2020) and San Francisco (2021).

As noted above, at AIPPI meetings, Working Committees engage in discussions to achieve a consensus on Resolu-tions representing the positions of AIPPI. However, a large majority of attendees are there for the excellent network-ing opportunities and for the educational programme of AIPPI, which typically features a day of panel sessions on international IP issues relating to pharmaceuticals and two days of international panel sessions on contemporary IP law issues. In addition, there are special panels of experts discussing current and future developments, mock trials, meetings of corporate representatives from industry, a women in AIPPI meeting and a fi rst time attendees reception.

Welcome to ItalyItaly is a peninsula, familiarly called “Lo Stivale” for its shape similar to a boot.

Nowhere else in the world will you fi nd a larger concen-tration of great beauty. There is more than one reason why Italy is one of the world’s top tourist destinations. It has some of the most beautiful cities in the world: Ven-ezia, Roma and Firenze; magnifi cent landscapes such as the Dolomite Alps, the rolling hills of Toscana and Umbria, and the lovely lakes of Como and Garda; not to mention the coastlines and islands, so rich in culture and art, with countless stunning beaches.

Blessed with such a rare package of outstanding nat-ural beauty, Italy also enjoys a favourable Mediterra-nean climate, with dry summers and cool, wet winters. Italy can boast one of the richest cuisines in the world and Italians love good food and good wine!

Tourism and industry are two of the key elements of Italy’s economy and Italians are very proud of their his-torical, artistic and cultural richness spanning all fi elds of endeavour.

Benvenuti a MilanoMilano is a great and safe city, a must-see in Italy and Europe. Notwithstanding its reputation as a city fo-cused on business and fi nance, the truth is that Milano is full of history, culture and beautiful spots. Milano boasts a very long history; it is believed to have been founded as long ago as 590 BC by the Insubri, an ancient Celtic people.

Conquered by the Romans in 222 BC, Mediolanum became a strategic crossroads between Italy and the rest of the Roman Empire and a fundamental strong-hold for Christianity.

The centre of Milano is still scattered with Roman remains, such as the Imperial Palace, the circus, the walls, the theatre, all visible around the area of the cur-rent Stock Exchange. There are also plenty of medieval remains, such as the beautiful Mercanti square and the gate of Porta Ticinese. The signature of history can be also perceived in the magnificent Duomo and the Sforzesco Castle, two authentic pearls of rare beauty.

Contemporary Milano maintains the prerogatives of its ancient sister. It remains the fi nancial and economic capital of Italy. It is the centre of fashion and design, and remains renowned for its modern outstanding monuments and museums, such as the recent urban projects involving famous architects (Renzo Piano, Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfi eld and others) and the Novecento Museum.

Cultural life centres on its theatres, and one above all, “La Scala”. Universities are cultural landmarks for all citizens who are interested in promoting culture be-yond their own city limits.

The Duomo is the centre of daily life. Milanese people love to meet under its steeples and start their social ac-tivities from there and the neighbouring Vittorio Ema-nuele Gallery. But, the fulcrum for night-life is to be found in the Navigli and Brera Areas.

With its central location in Europe, Milano can be easily reached from all nearby EU-countries, both by air and rail. The public transportation system is one of the best in Italy, with four underground lines and effi cient train and bus lines going everywhere. Only three hours on Italy’s red-arrow trains separate Milano from Roma.

Milano in September: “the city to be” The city is full of cultural life and activities every Sep-tember, a month with a concentration of important events, such as the following:

Milano Fashion Week - WomenThere are more than 170 catwalks spread around dif-ferent locations in the centre of town during the fash-ion week, with many international VIP’s making an appearance at one of the world’s premiere women’s fashion events.

Milan Fashion Week is not just catwalks; it features many side events and exclusive parties in luxurious locations organized by Fashion Houses, PR Agencies and Modelling Agencies.

F1 Grand Prix d’Italia – Milano, Monza The Monza Grand Prix is one of the world’s best known historical automobile race circuits and attracts thousands of people every year.

In the last few years, we have seen numerous side-events developing in the weeks before and after the race, involving people from the entourage and F1 teams and the Event Agencies which organize the race, with safe-driving tests and many interesting activities.

MiTo September in Music - Milano/Torino MiTo has since its fi rst edition become one of the MUST events for Milanese people who love music: a rich cal-endar of concerts and events with musicians from many countries, presenting different styles such as classical music, opera, jazz and traditional music, who invade Milano and Torino for a month of performances.

6

Milano Film FestivalIf you love cinema, you cannot miss the Milano Film Festival: different locations each evening for a week, many fi lms including big shots and independent jewels scheduled during the days of the Festival, with reduced entrance fees and very often the possibility to see fi lms before the offi cial launch.

tsSocial EventsCouncil of Presidents’ DinnerMuseo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia “Leonardo da Vinci”September 16th, 2016http://www.museoscienza.org/english/

The Leonardo da Vinci Museum is one of the largest museums of science and technology in Europe and the world, and the largest we have in Italy. Founded in 1953, it is currently a Private Institution whose as-sociates are Ministries, Public Bodies and above all, Milano’s Universities.

Its mission is to keep up-to-date and experiment with new languages to communicate and engage with more and more people. Inside its walls is the largest col-lection of machine models in the world, handcrafted following the instructions found in Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings.

You can admire the actual machines inside the so-called Leonardo Gallery, a long exhibition room in which the cocktail reception will take place, to be fol-lowed by a sit-down dinner.

The “Sala delle Colonne”, which used to be the home for the antique library of the Olivetan monastery, is a fascinating space that overlooks two beautiful Renais-sance cloisters. The elegant architecture, marked by a succession of arches and columns, is ideal to dive into the past and feel like a guest in a Renaissance palace.

Cultural EveningTeatro alla ScalaSeptember 18th, 2016http://www.teatroallascala.org/en/index.html

Teatro alla Scala needs no introduction; it is one of the most famous theatres in the world, boasting a long tra-dition and history, dating back to 1778, when its fi rst season was opened by Antonio Salieri.

It takes its name from the location. It was built on the remains of a earlier church called Santa Maria alla Scala.

All major artists have performed here: Gioacchino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi, Maria Callas, to name only the most famous.

To watch a performance at La Scala is a magic experi-ence you will not easily forget.

IMPORTANT: places are limited, so booking will be based on fi rst-come, fi rst-served policy.

For those who may have different tastes, we have fore-seen alternative options.

Closing DinnerHangar BicoccaSeptember 20th, 2016http://www.hangarbicocca.org/home-en-US/

You will experience a post-industrial space, living a second life after the fi rst one. Here, the most important manufacturing industries in Italy had their operational sheds, and locomotives, farm machinery and mechan-ical components were designed and produced from the 1920’s onwards.

After being neglected for a decade or so, following the decline of manufacturing, in 2004 the old sheds were transformed into exhibition pavilions for tem-porary and permanent exhibitions by contemporary artists.
