INTRODUCTION

Dear Parents,

It gives me great pleasure to present the 2017 Autumn Term Dulwich Prep London

co-curricular booklet. Once again this term, we will be offering the boys a wide range

of co-curricular clubs and activities that enable them to develop their social, sporting

and cultural abilities and to foster their own self-belief.

Participation in the co-curricular programme at Dulwich Prep London is strongly

encouraged, valued and inclusive and we hope that the boys will take advantage of

the clubs and activities on offer. The Middle and Upper School boys should be

looking to choose clubs that will incorporate a range of skills and help them work

towards their All Rounder Award.

This booklet contains a comprehensive timetable of clubs and activities that will run

during this Autumn Term which we hope will prove useful to you and your sons.

To register interest in any of the clubs in this booklet, please use the online

questionnaire link that you will be sent. The online questionnaire will be available

from Tuesday 4th July to Monday 10th July.

Please be aware that membership of most of our clubs (apart from those which are

invitational) is for one term only to maximise the number of boys who can benefit.

Current members may reapply if they wish to join for a second term but should

understand that first time applicants will always be given priority. Please note that,

once enrolled in a paid club the fee is non-refundable, and boys are expected to

complete the ten week programme. Where clubs are oversubscribed, names will be

drawn from a hat with boys encouraged to reapply the following term if necessary.

You will be informed by mid-August whether or not your son has been successful in

applying for a place in a club. Please note that any Middle or Upper School boys will

definitely be able to find a place in a club running until 5pm on any evening, in case

this helps you plan your childcare provision.

All clubs will start from Monday 11th September. Paid clubs will end on Friday

1st December, allowing for a ten week course, whilst unpaid clubs will finish

one week later on Friday 9th December.

CLUB INFORMATION

A Good Read This Year 8 break time club meets fortnightly throughout the autumn and spring terms to

discuss books that are thought-provoking, perhaps a ‘classic’, certainly ‘a good read’. Each

meeting is led by a different member of staff, and boys wishing to attend a particular

meeting should sign up in advance and undertake to read the book before attending.

Ancient Greek / Roman Myths Myths are traditional stories - some provide information on the founding of nations whilst

other tell the stories of great heroes and heroines. This club will focus on the myths of

Ancient Greece and Rome looking at various texts and videos delving into the stories that

defined a culture.

Art Club Boys will be guided through various activities ranging from drawing, painting, printmaking,

collage, sketchbook work, photography/animation and IT through to three-dimensional

elements. Some of the studies will be self-directed and investigative.

Badminton Club An opportunity to learn the game, develop your skills, enjoy fun and competitive matches

and climb the rankings. This is a fun lunchtime club.

Basketball Club Basketball is a fun, energetic team sport for all ages, sizes and abilities. Boys will learn the

basics from Mr Jones, including shooting, layups, defence and dribbling. Basketball will be

open to boys from Years 5 - 8, with a view to create some competitive teams in the future.

Bee Keeping An opportunity to explore the workings of the school bee hives.

Big Band The Big Band’s reputation speaks for itself and the group is in demand both for school

concerts and local events. Boys from any year in Middle and Upper School may be invited

to join but it is usually a performance opportunity for boys in Upper School. The Band has

won awards at national level on many occasions.

Book Club Year 6 & Year 7 These clubs meet fortnightly and, as spaces are limited, are divided into two sessions, with

half the boys attending a breakfast meeting and the other half after school. We do different

things at each meeting - book swaps, discussions, debates or quizzes - and the only

criterion for joining the club is a genuine love of books and reading. Boys should speak to

Mrs Fletcher if they wish to join.

Calligraphy Club Calligraphy is the Art of Beautiful Writing. Boys will learn how to form letters with a

calligraphy pen and will be encouraged to create masterpieces of writing and illustration in

the form of cards, posters, poems etc. Boys are welcome to come along to a taster session

if they would like to find out more before committing! (6 - 8 boys)

Chamber Groups Depending on given strengths within sections or year groups, any number of small chamber

groups may be organised. String trios, quartets and quintets play alongside clarinet group

and cello group in a variety of concerts.

Chamber Strings Boys from Years 5 - 8 may be invited to participate in this group which performs regularly

in a variety of styles.

Chamber Choir Boys from any year in Middle and Upper School may audition for our Chamber Choir

which sings major services and concerts throughout the year. This group plays a

fundamental role in our annual carol services and choral festivals in Southwark Cathedral.

Tuesdays.

with each week focused on a different aspect of the game.

Darts Club Come and learn the skill of throwing arrows!

poetic expression, from slam poetry to haiku to epic. With plenty of chance to write and

Digital Leaders Club for Years 5 and 6 This club is for Year 6 boys who have already been identified as digital leaders and for Year

5 boys who would like to be digital leaders. The club involves looking at new iPad Apps and

discovering how these Apps could be used in lessons. Digital leaders also produce videos
