Staying Out of the Mud………. The When and Where of Color

Additionally, Barry attended numerous workshops and demonstrations to add to his knowledge and experience. Reminders!

The gate has been found open again first thing in the morning. If you are the last person out be sure to check all the locks. Training is available for lock up procedures. Contact Deborah Gregory at [email protected] Also be sure to sign in at the computer if you come to the Studio. This means even for a short drop off of materials. GVR monitors our attendance and use of our space and we want to keep what we have. Be sure to log in both morning and afternoon if you are there all day. Your help with both these issues is greatly appreciated.

Opportunity to Hang Your Paintings

SRAL has open space for hanging this summer at various centers. This is a good time to

get those paintings out of the house! Space is available to Special Interest Groups or individuals. Just be aware that there will be maintenance going on at the centers and at times the center may be closed. Please contact Nancy Wesorick [email protected]

if you are interested. Those that are first to contact Nancy will get the space.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

ABSTRACT BRIGGade

The Abstract BRIGGade meets once a month on the Friday after the SRAL general meeting. At the meeting, artists discuss their abstract art projects, give helpful critiques, talk about techniques and presentation of their work, plan shows, and exchange ideas that foster non-representational art. Everyone is welcome! Each month, the Abstract BRIGGade challenges artists to paint in abstract form something like “joy” or “morning” or “to paint in an unusual size or shaped canvas.” Responding to the challenge is not a requirement for attending the meetings. This month’s challenge is "paint abstract art without using a brush." The group welcomes all art work to

be critiqued or enjoyed as the artist wishes, and those artists with nothing to show can still participate in the discussion. For more information call Nan Lux (520) 820-8031.

Next Meeting: May 10th 2019, 9:30 AM at Santa Rita Art League of GVR studio.

COLLAGE MIXED MEDIA The Collage Mixed Media Group meets on the First and Third Wednesdays of every month in the Main Studio unless there is a class being presented and we then meet in

Studio A. This is currently an informal group meeting from 9:30 to 11:30 for all who are

interested in collage and mixed media fine art.

DRAW, DOODLE AND TANGLE GROUP

The Draw, Doodle, and Tangle Group meets every Wednesday in the Main Studio from 1:00 to 3:00. The intent of our group is to provide a venue for anyone interested in developing, improving, and challenging their creative spirit through drawing (basic pencil and ink techniques), doodling (random lines and shapes), and tangling (repetitive patterns, i.e., Zentangle®).

FIGURE DRAWING

The Figure Drawing group is in full swing. We hire models, sometimes nude, to pose for us in the studio. We meet the first Saturday of each month through May. Any medium, any level are welcome. We charge $5 for each artist for the session to help pay for the model. We meet 9am to noon. Please consider joining us. It is a fantastic way to learn and a terrific value. Hope to see you there. Any questions about this program please contact Nanci Sheppard at [email protected] or (541) 519 3780.

OIL PAINTERS of the ART LEAGUE (OPAL)

OPAL holds art sessions on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays from October to April, 9am to noon, in the SRAL main studio. There is no cost to participants – all instructors volunteer their time to help the artists. The group is open to all Art League members interested in pursuing their love of creating fine art with oil paints Any member who wants to learn more about oil painting is certainly welcome to attend the sessions – we would love to have you. For more information about the OPAL group go to Opal .

PASTEL GROUP NOTE CHANGE The SRAL Pastel Group will be meeting on the first and third Tuesdays of each month during the summer in the main studio from 9 am - 12 pm. Our members meet to support each other, to work independently, to share their knowledge, tips and techniques and to make friends. Come join us and discover the great properties this medium has to

offer. The following website does a fabulous job of introducing soft pastels - https://www.mallgalleries.org.uk/learning/resources/history-pastels Jean Schwafel will monitor this group during the summer.

PLEIN AIR

We are up and running with the Plein Air Painters. We meet Thursday mornings...any medium, any level, to paint scenes all over Southern Arizona. We have a great schedule on our website under Groups/Plein Air. We also post the monthly schedule in the studio. We hope to see more artists join us, even if you have never painted plein air before. Anyone can enjoy new places and the outdoors because we have so much fun. We often have lunch after the session and provide carpools at the meet point. Any questions about this program please contact Nanci Sheppard at [email protected] or (541) 519 3780.

PORTRAIT

The portrait group meets all summer. There is a more informal format. Unless someone has a volunteer model, we take turns posing. Quick studies of fifteen to twenty minutes. It’s fun and really sharpens your skills. The rest of April we will do one pose with a model for the entire time. Also, if you have modeled, there are some pastels done by Jan Panhuis in the back room. Please take yours.

PRINT GUILD This month we will meet in the Studio on Thursday April 25 at 9:30 AM to continue printing on the Blick press. Our subject will be Sahuaros. Bring paper, paint brushes, and a drawing ready to go. Demo by Karen Keim.

WATERCOLOR

The Santa Rita Art League Watercolor Group meets on Friday mornings from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. We usually utilize the lighting and space in the large Media Room. However, on occasion we work in Studio A when the Media Room is used for classes or large meetings. We are a diversified group using a multitude of techniques from beginners to those who have honed their approach over the years. It is an informal fun gathering with no instruction or critiquing, although we often elect to ask for advice from fellow painters. SRAL has a wonderful section on Watercolors in it's library! Grab your watercolors and come join us! During the summer and early fall, Brian Bauman and Sharon Irish will oversee the group opening and closing the facility.
