CommuniqTuesday, December 11, 2012 Portrait of Turkey MIC’s yearlong focus on Turkey will culminate in a public program when three of the four Minnesota teachers who participated in the study tour to Turkey earlier this year will talk about their experiences on the trip and discuss how they plan to incorporate all they learned about Turkey into their classroom curriculum. Good News! MIC has been selected to participate in the 2013 Portrait of Turkey program which means that we will be sending another FOUR middle/high school teachers to Turkey for a two-week summer study tour. All those interested in applying needs to attend a mandatory workshop (tentatively scheduled for March 2, 2013) and submit an essay application which will be due by March 11, 2013. The December panel discussion is free and open to the entire community. Any teachers who might be interested in participating in the 2013 study tour are strongly encouraged to attend this event as they will be able to get first-hand information from this year’s study tour participants.

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 U.S. Foreign Policy Update with Tom Hanson Join MIC for the ever-popular “U.S. Foreign Policy Update” with Tom Hanson. Tom will explore foreign policy development, trends and challenges faced by the United States during the run-up to and aftermath of the 2012 elections and in the upcoming year. This timely and thought-provoking presentation is especially recommended for participants in MIC’s Great Decisions program as Tom always gives illuminating insights into foreign policy topics. Tom Hanson is a Foreign Policy Consultant and a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer, participated in the opening of new U.S. Embassies in Mongolia and Estonia. He worked on the foreign relations committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and served as Director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington, D.C. Currently, Tom serves as Diplomat in Residence at the University of Minnesota – Duluth, is a member of MIC’s Great Decisions advisory committee and frequent Great Decisions speaker. Thursday, December 13 Regional Transboundary Waters The Consulate General of Canada, in partnership with the University of Minnesota, the Freshwater Society, Environment Canada, the Province of Manitoba and the Minnesota International Center, invites you to a forum on regional transboundary waters. While this half-day forum will be important for scientists, researchers, teachers, students, policy makers, officials, anyone interested in learning more about efforts to improve the health of Minnesota’s and Manitoba’s waters within the Red River Basin and Lake Winnipeg Watershed is invited to attend. Thursday, March 14, 2013 The Future of Korea A panel discussion with representatives from the U.S. Department of State and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, in collaboration with the Korea Economic Institute. In recognition of the more scholarly aspect of Academic WorldQuest compared with the “fun” atmosphere of Community WorldQuest, MIC has separated the two competitions and will be hosting an Academic WorldQuest competition solely for high school students. The winning team of four students will represent Minnesota at the National Academic WorldQuest competition in Washington D.C. on April 27, 2013. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to promote and celebrate international learning, as well as for the winning team to enjoy an all-expenses paid opportunity to compete in Washington, D.C. This event is being sponsored by David Winton Bell Foundation and General Mills and will be held at General Mills’ headquarters in Golden Valley. Registration is free, but transportation to General Mills is not provided. More details to come soon - we hope to see you and your team there!

WorldQuest was a Nail Biter this Year!

MIC’s 12th Annual WorldQuest Trivia competition, held at the beginning of November, featured 36 teams from throughout the Twin Cities, answering questions ranging from names of North Korean politicians to Canadian provinces. This year’s first place team was EcoLab’s Trivia Misfits, winning by a single point. The joint second-place teams - The Consulate General of Canada, the United Nations of Minnesota Blue Hats, and the Advocates for Human Rights – eventually finished in that order – after two tie-breakers. Overall, it was a very competitive event with 20 teams finishing within 10 points of the lead. WorldQuest was a success this year thanks to the sponsorship of our corporate member, General Mills, and others who partnered with MIC. We are planning a 13th competition next year and it’s never too early to start studying!

Did You Miss the 2012 Great Decisions Conference on Global Health?

Well, 150 attendees, including a large group of students whose participation was underwritten by a generous anonymous donor, didn’t. They received insights from keynote speaker, Lois Quam, executive director of the U.S. State Department’s Global Health Initiative, on the importance of health for all countries. She noted that, while it is important to promote health at home, it is also essential to improve health abroad, since overseas travel has made illnesses move around the world far more easily than before. Tom Hanson, foreign policy consultant, set the stage for the conference theme, while Fred de Sam Lazaro, PBS News hour correspondent, outlined the importance of media coverage of global health stories, and Wendy Bennett, MIC board member, discussed how communities can collaborate to have a meaningful impact. Our knowledgeable panel included Dr. Gene Bukhman (Harvard Medical School), Michael Finch (Carlson School of Management), Dr. John Finnegan (U of M School of Public Health), Dr. Jacob Gayle (Medtronic Foundation), Simon Stevens (United Health Group) and John Rash (Star Tribune), who shared their informed views on global health and how their respective industries approach the issue Overall, the conference was a great success with students, global health leaders and the internationally curious; all meeting to learn about the importance of global health not only for Minnesota, but for the world as well.

I am one of many community leaders who have been asked to serve on the MSP Export Initiative project this year. Our team is focusing on “Selling MSP to the World” and discussing ways to increase our region’s global fluency and providing our citizens with the skills, knowledge and perspectives necessary to understand and work effectively to thrive

in today’s world. At its heart, this means we have to change the conversation – making trade and exports a key part of everyday business discussion in Minnesota. I have been reflecting on the ways the Minnesota International Center helps expand and change the conversation on global issues and education in our state:• Our business briefings, undertaken in partnership with

prominent law or accounting firms, offer advice and expertise on trade and export issues. The most recent was a China Town Hall, with a webcast from the U.S. Ambassador to China, Gary Locke, and a frank discussion by an expert about the opportunities for a new class of Chinese entrepreneurs to invest in Minnesota.

• Our recent Great Decisions conference, focusing on global health, aligned perfectly with one of the strategies of the Brookings Institution export plan – that of helping Minnesota reinforce its earned reputation as a global health center.

• Our partnership with the Star Tribune, offering monthly articles on Great Decisions topics, pertinent to the global

issues and challenges of our interconnected world. • We are investing in Minnesota’s children and tomorrow’s

globally-minded workforce through our K-12 Education initiatives, such as our Academic WorldQuest for high schools in February. We have expanded Minnesota teachers’ knowledge about another country and culture through our Spotlight on Turkey program. Once again, through a competitive process, MIC has secured funding to send four more Minnesota teachers to Turkey this summer and they in turn, will share their experiences in Turkey with their students for years to come.

• The upcoming Foreign Policy update by Tom Hanson at the end of January is a prime example of understanding the United States’ role in various regions of the world.

Every day we seek to change the conversation in Minnesota as we educate and inspire Minnesotans to promote international understanding and engagement. Our programming for communities, classrooms, businesses and in homes strengths the global fabric of our state. You are an integral part of changing the conversation and we couldn’t do what we do at MIC without you. Best wishes for a joyful holiday season from all of us at MIC!
