Fisher Receives Approval for New Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology Fisher College’s proposal for a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology was approved on November 29 by the Board of Higher Education at their quarterly hearing. This vote of confidence positions the College for the second step of NEASC approval. In the meantime BHE has given authorization for the marketing and offering of the program. Dr. Tünde Turi-Marković, Assistant Professor of Psychology, will serve as Program Director for the new degree.

College Launches Virtual Tour and Facebook Application

The Office of Communications recently launched an interactive virtual tour on the College website. The tour takes users on a narrated walk around campus buildings and hotspots in the neighborhood. The tour includes a gallery of 360 photos of different areas within the college, including the 118 Lobby, cafeteria, the student center, and residence halls, among others. The College worked with YourCampus360 in order to complete the project and will use it as a means to introduce prospective students to Fisher’s campus. The tour is accessible from the home page of fisher.edu, as well as on the College’s main and Admissions Facebook pages.

Center for Leadership in Public Service to Participate in National Institute of Justice Funded Research Study on Forensic Evidence in Sexual Assault CasesThe Center for Leadership in Public Service (CLPS) is part of a research team collaborating on a research project entitled, “Forensic Evidence and Criminal Justice Outcomes in a Statewide Sample of Sexual Assault Cases.” The research team consists of researchers from the Children and Family Research Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, St. Xavier University in Illinois, and the CLPS.

Forensic evidence in sexual assault cases can corroborate victim reports, help criminal justice professionals prove that assault has occurred, particu-larly for child victims, and identify unknown suspects through DNA match-ing. But we know surprisingly little about how common forensic evidence is in these cases and what impact it has on criminal justice outcomes. The research team will work with public agencies in Massachusetts to combine information from databases on health care providers’ examinations of victims, crime lab analysis of sexual assault evidence kits, and police records of arrests and criminal charges. The study will examine how often different types of forensic evidence are available (e.g., blood samples, saliva samples), at what point in the case the evidence becomes available, and how much it increases the chances of an arrest and criminal charge.

Additional questions include whether forensic evidence has a greater impact in child or adult victim cases, and whether the evidence and its impact are greater if specialized nurses called Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) conduct the forensic medical examinations. The results will provide new knowledge to help improve the effectiveness of systems collecting and using forensic evidence. The 18-month project begins in January of 2012 and is supported by a grant from the National Institute of Justice. The research team will collaborate on producing the final report as well as presentations at professional conferences and articles for peer reviewed scholarly journals.

The Council of Independent Colleges – Tuition Exchange ProgramThe CIC Tuition Exchange Program (CIC-TEP) is a network of CIC colleges and universities willing to accept, tuition-free, students from families of full-time employees of other CIC-TEP institutions. Each participating institution in the network agrees to import a limited number of students on the same admission basis as they accept all other students, without regard to the number of stu-dents it exports. CIC-TEP was planned and developed more than two decades ago with a goal of creating a true-access program, without any costly fees or cumbersome credit-debit limitations. The true-access component is only one of the many special features that the program offers. The program addresses several needs. First, the program encourages students from employee families of private colleges and universities to attend similar institutions. Second, it assists these same families in meeting the partial cost of college attendance. Finally, CIC-TEP establishes an educational resource that enhances each institution’s benefits package.

With a current membership of nearly 380 participating institutions in the CIC-TEP, participation is at its highest level yet. We encourage you to take part.

As Fisher College is a member of CIC-TEP, we can export as many employees (or family members) as we choose. If accepted by the host university, tuition is 100% free.

Our first “export” has found success! Tina Lindberg, wife of David Lindberg, Associate Director of Admissions, has been accepted at Upper Iowa University’s Graduate Online Program. Congratulations Tina!

Competition is fierce as each college or university is only required to accept only three applicants in each academic year. Falcon’s Nest Open For BusinessAfter months of anticipation, the Falcon’s Nest opened its doors to the college community. The new cafe is the former location of the Dean of Students Office, which took over the bookstore space. The cafe features quick grab and go items such as snacks and sandwiches as well as Fisher merchandise. The Falcon’s Nest will have later hours than the cafeteria.

CONDITA 1630: ALL THINGS BOSTONIANby Alan AdamsHi everyone, this is Alan hisownself, with another piece of Bostonia.

Before I continue, you do realize where the very name originates, don’t you? Next time you’re walking parallel to Huntington near the Conser-vatory about one block south, you’ll find yourself on St. Botolph Street. “Botolph’s Town” apparently was shortened to ‘Boston’ at some point, in our sister town in England. In the 1630’s, we gained our beloved title by transfer.

But I ask you, did you realize that Boston has a Stone? Yes… a Stone, upper case intentional.

Here’s the deal: Stand facing the famous Union Oyster House, turn left, slight right into the alley, and lo and behold, there’s a gift shop. The BOSTON STONE is set into the foundation, you can’t miss it.

The stone itself was a “grinding stone,” a heavy cylinder that was rolled back and forth in a stone trough containing raw materials for paint pigments. In this case, the stone belonged to the shop of Thomas Childs, who imported the device in 1700. The pigments produced from his grindings were used in paints throughout Boston.

Salvaged from the ruins of his abandoned shop, the stone was later cemented into its current location. The curious thing is that it became the focal point of directions…. “About 1,700 feet north-northeast from the Stone” might be a reference point from the center of the town, sometimes for surveyors, and most definitely for Townies.

On a related note, legend has it that Daniel Webster regularly stopped, sometimes in the morning, at the Union Oyster House to eat several plates of oysters, each half-dozen being washed down with a tumbler of brandy and water.

So for some reason, I have a bizarre image of Webster asleep in the gutter, using the Boston Stone as a pillow.

Woodrow Wilson Fellow Kate O’Neil to Visit Fisher

Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow Kathleen O’Neil will be on campus from Tuesday, March 20 through March 24, 2012 (the week following spring break). Kate’s expertise in global financial markets, leadership, and ethics make her an ideal match for Fisher and a catalyst for discussion in all of our programs.

Fellow Kate O’Neil earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from John Carroll University and a Master of Business Administration in Finance from the Wharton Graduate School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the President/CEO of Liberty Street Advisors.

As she has done while a visiting fellow at other institu-tions, including most recently Stonehill College, Kate will be part of approximately 15 classes and meet with other groups on campus as well as play a major role in our March Convocation.

As you prepare class syllabi/outlines for the spring term, please consider engaging Kate in your classes and clubs. She will be part of between 12-15 classes. Falcons Athletics gets a Face LiftOn December 7, the newly designed Athletics webpage was officially launched. In addition to headshots and bios of all student-athletes, the site features videos, articles, and enhanced stats and standings pages. The site will eventually be a premier location for sponsorship advertisements. The college partnered with Prestosports for the design and back-end of the site. Check it out at the url below.

Office of Alumni Relations Summer Out and About Series The Office of Alumni Relations and the Division of Continuing Education initiated a summer series of informal free and ticketed events, targeting areas with high concentrations of alumni around the Greater Boston area. As a first time effort, the feedback was good. The highest attendance occurred for the next to final event, with 25 folks participating in a free tour to the New Bedford Whaling Museum, which was coupled with a city-wide party called AHA! New Bedford. The visit to the Lowell Spinners also attracted a few alums too. Rick Potter ’05 wins the frequent flier award and attended 2 of the 4 events!

These events help to reengage alums and build awareness for Fisher College. Anecdotally, the Alumni Office received calls and emails about these events from alums who, although unable to attend, were grateful and supportive of our continued efforts to establish relationships. Connections and deeper engagement are beginning to show: two alumni from last spring’s Boston Public Library event attended Reunion, and two are meeting with students in and out of the classroom.
