When I heard about Hotel Montreal and its new Polo Bar, which has

emerged from the bones of the former Chateau Blanc Apartments,

I couldn't drive past without having to fight the urge to call in for a

quick nose. When one of my girlfriends told me about the amazing jeans at

Halo & Hazard I wanted to drop everything and get there straight away so I

wouldn't miss out on the best styles. It's the same when some of the team

here turn up with gorgeous little gifts or eclectic pieces from the many quaint

homeware and gift stores around town, I have a moment of 'fomo',

especially if they say the piece they bought was almost sold out!

Fomo, an acronym from 'fear of missing out', has morphed into our

vocabulary and made its way into some of the more casual dictionaries. And

while we all experience this emotion at various times, for some it can

become extreme. Psychologist John Grohol gives a prime example of fomo

in a social context: “Teens and adults text while driving, because the

possibility of a social connection is more important than their own lives (and

the lives of others). They interrupt one call to take another, even when they

don't know who's on the other line. They check their Twitter stream while on a

date, because something more interesting or entertaining just might be

happening.” It's their fear of missing out on a different connection, whether it

be better, or worse, that drives them to keep checking he explains.

While the disciplines of our working lives tends to curtail acting on our fear

of missing out, one thing that will keep you up with the play and give your

free-time wanderings purpose is to have a read through the following pages.

As usual we bring you all the latest on what's happening around town and

some amazing places to shop. In this issue you can also find out about The

Polo Bar and Halo & Hazard – have a read – I'd hate you to miss out!

OUT & ABOUT

The turret, which has been extensively

strengthened and restored, was

craned into position atop College Hall

on Rolleston Avenue recently. Removed after

the September 2010 earthquake, the 21-

tonne structure was lifted into place using a

160-tonne crane before being fastened into

a new concrete ring.

Extensively renovated by Fletcher

Construction Company and Arts Centre

stonemasons over the last six months, the

turret has been relined with concrete,

replacing the original interior brickwork, and

the entire tower structure reinforced with

concrete and steel. Once completed, the

turret will be tied through the tower to a new

footing at pavement level with steel rods.

Around 10 percent of the exterior

stonework has been replaced by the Arts

Centre's team of stonemasons, repairing the

damage suffered in the region's first major

earthquake.

Arts Centre CEO André Lovatt says the

restoration is symbolic of the progress made

on-site – not just in terms of restoration but

also earthquake strengthening.

“We were very fortunate to have the turret

survive that original earthquake, and even

more so that the decision was taken to

remove the structure prior to February 2011

or damage to this section of the site could

have been far more significant,” says Mr

Lovatt.

During the September 2010 earthquake,

the turret broke free of its footing and rotated

in place about 50mm.

Capping off a year of progress The Arts Centre has capped off a year of significant progress with

the restoration of one of its best-known architectural features, the

College Hall turret.

“Like the Clock Tower on Worcester

Boulevard, the turret on Rolleston

Avenue is one of the site's most

recognisable features – especially to

visitors to the Botanic Gardens.”

“As we progress towards the

completion of College Hall – set to

reopen in 2015 – we are very pleased to

have the structure completed and

strengthened to a level where we can

now proudly display such a unique

feature.”

The reinstallation of the turret marks a

step closer to the completion of the

extensive seven-year, $290 million

restoration programme. During this

period of restoration, the re-opening of

the site will be gradually phased in.

Well worth saving and strengthening –

the turret pre-quakes.

The turret being restored.

FIVE MINUTES by Angela Bennett

Ralph BungardEntrepreneur and beer connoisseur Ralph Bungard is the man behind Three Boys Brewery which he started in 2004. Recently his Three Boys Oyster Stout was named best for its style in the inaugural New World Beer & Cider Awards. Ralph is a scientist and his winning stout’s name is no gimmick – real Bluff oysters are used in the brewing process. I caught up with this passionate brewer to find out a little more about how he has become one of New Zealand’s top brewers…

Why did you decide to leave your career in academic science?

I love science and was pretty good at it (if I

can say that!). But it is really difficult to

achieve in science in New Zealand when the

industry is very small and funding is focussed

primarily on practical agricultural applications

of science. My wife and I lived in the UK for some time

where I worked as a scientist. In the UK,

funding is pretty good and the science

industry is impressive. But once we had our

first child, it became pretty clear that growing

up in the north of England was no comparison

to growing up in New Zealand; so like many

Kiwis, we moved home with a sacrifice of

career potential for lifestyle – a good decision!

What inspired you to start a craft

brewery?I trained as a wine maker after my first degree

and before I got sucked into hard science as a

researcher. I love wine and thought that it

might be the industry for me. After working in

the UK though, I got more interested in beer

(they have great beer in the UK). And after

returning to NZ and working again as a

scientist, I realised how limited the beer

selection was in New Zealand at that time.

That is when the germ of the idea to start a

brewery began.

Why is your brewery called Three

Boys? That is a question that we are often asked and

we largely leave that up to the imagination of

our customers! I do have two sons though and

my wife Brigid has three boys in the house if

she counts me!

What were the challenges of setting up

a brewery? It is one of those things where, if I was given

the task now and had a list of all the things that

needed to be done to set up the brewery and

business that we have today, then I probably

would have said “no thanks!”.I think that is a typical Kiwi way of starting a

business though – just start one and see what

happens! Probably not the best model and

probably why NZ has so many start-up

businesses and so many small business

failures. The challenges are the same in any start-up

business: having to be jack-of-all trades, lack

of finances, etc. I guess one big challenge for

any small brewery is to get consistency in your

product though, so that your customers can

come to rely on you for quality and value.

Has your science background helped

you in the brewing industry? Most certainly! Biochemistry is such a big

part of brewing at every stage of production,

from the first task of mashing in the malt, to

the last stage of getting the product

packaged for sale. I often call it “biochemistry

in big pots”.The attention to detail and persistence that is

required in science is also a big help – those

are things that working in science really teach

you. Science also has a very artistic and

creative angle too –

Is NZ beer distinct like our wines? If

so, in what way and who does it

appeal to?New Zealand beer is very distinct, and that

has been largely driven by the hops. Like

grapes where, say Sauvignon Blanc grown in

Marlborough is so different than Sauvignon

Blanc grown in, say, France or Australia, the

same applies to hops. It is just something

about the NZ growing conditions that bring

out unique flavours in our raw ingredients. On top of that NZ had (and still has) some

inspirational hop research and breeding. That

has produced unique hop varieties specific to

NZ. There is a huge demand for NZ hops

overseas and about 80% of our production is

exported.

Page 7: Metropol 11-12-14

Metropol December 11, 2014 7

What defines a ‘craft’ brewer or beer?I actually don’t fancy the word “craft” for

brewing. For me it conjures up images of felt

hats and tie-died caftans! Great beer can be

made by brewers of all sizes just as crap beer

can be made by brewers of all sizes. I do

prefer microbrewery rather than “craft”.

Microbrewery simply tells you that the

business is small and most likely locally

owned and operated.

What are some of your

most popular brews and why?Our biggest sellers are our IPA and our Pils.

They are great beers and people know what to

expect with those styles. We are probably

most renowned for our Oyster Stout and

Wheat beer – they are uniquely Three Boys.

Oyster Stout is New Zealand’s most awarded

beer!

What temperature does beer taste

best at?That really depends on the beer style. Lagers

are often better enjoyed cool while some ales

are best at cellar temperature – up to around

13-14C. The biggest sin for a flavourful beer is serving

it too cold; that just traps in all the flavour and

aroma.

On a more personal note: what is your

proudest achievement?Getting a double hat-trick for the local

Heathcote Cricket Club! Seriously, I can’t

think of any single “proudest moment”

without being overcome with embarrassment!

I am proud of Three Boys Brewery and proud

of the great people that now work at Three

Boys.

If you could go back and tell your

teenage self something, what would it

be?Haha! - Without giving some good advice

about girls!? I think I would say that it is not

really important what you choose to do, as

long as you are always doing something and

heading towards a goal. I think that there is

too much pressure on kids these days to pick

a career and stick with it. Change is good and

should not be feared. I guess I would summarise in saying to myself

that the direction isn’t important but progress

is.

What is one thing you would like to see

in the ‘new’ Christchurch?I’d like to see more locally produced products

on sale and a real pride amongst our locals

and retailers of our local industries. We have

been through so much in Christchurch post-

quakes and we should be proud of those who

have stayed and rebuilt their lives and

businesses.

Which is your favourite café, restaurant

or bar in Christchurch? Every one that sells Three Boys! Easy!

What’s next on the wish list?To spend more time hunting and fishing and

with my family over summer – and – of course,

drinking local beer!Cheers!

Granting wishesIf you were to be granted just one wish this Christmas, what would it be? While it's true that there are highly important and sentimental things that money can't buy, it's well-known that there are a few things it can… and in the spirit of granting wishes this Christmas, Northlands is inviting locals to join them in celebrating the season and all its festivities by taking part in its WinYourWish campaign. WinYourWish encourages locals to submit the wishes at the top of their Christmas lists to the centre, and if they're lucky - the centre will grant them that wish. With no limit as to the monetary value of each wish, shoot for the stars, and who knows what will happen! With more than $20,000 allocated strictly to giving gifts, Northlands is looking forward to granting copious Christmas wishes, and is encouraging locals to think outside the box by wishing for travel vouchers to bring back family and friends, or grocery vouchers to shout a family feast!

How to enter:Until 19 December, 2014, locals can attempt to win their wish by shopping at Northlands, taking photos of their 'wish' and submitting to Facebook with the hashtag #WinYourWish. They are also eligible to enter via entry form in-centre, and posting on the centre's Facebook page.Conditions apply.

Santa at The Court

The Court Theatre is encouraging people to “give the gift of theatre” by purchasing tickets for a new children's play, Mrs McGinty and The Bizarre Plant, and gifting them to Christchurch children in need. Ticket donors will choose which of three Christchurch charities receives the ticket(s): Cholmondeley Children's Centre, Christchurch City Mission or Pillars, a charity for children of prisoners.

and dads, not to mention boys and girls, Santa has banned queues at The Forge Christmas Grotto. Instead his elves will meet the children on arrival and take down

their names, checking to see if they are on the naughty or nice list.

Children will have plenty to do while they wait to be

introduced to Santa; children can chat to the elves, write and post a Christmas letter or take pictures at the photo booth.Santa commented, “Ho ho ho, boys and

girls have come to see me in my Grotto

not stand in line and I know that mums and

dads will appreciate my early Christmas gift of making

the whole event free.”Rudolf Redknows, the Santa team's transport co-ordinator, has confirmed that Santa and elves will be at The Court Theatre foyer from 9am to 1pm on Saturday 13 and Saturday 20 December.

This Christmas, The Forge at The Court will help make the Santa experience truly memorable for Christchurch children. Santa and three of his elves will be flying in on 13 December and 20 December prior to their appearance, on Christmas Eve, in chimneys all over the world.Elves R U Nortyornice, Glitterdust and Howdoo Umeasureup, will be assisting Santa in his Forge Christmas Grotto. Not only will they handle the 'Naughty or Nice' list, but also, when Santa takes his milk and biscuit breaks at 10am, 11am and 12 noon, they will entertain Grotto visitors with a story and a carol or two.

More than fifty-three-thousand South Islanders can't be wrong... and

even more will soon holiday in Fiji, thanks to extra flights just announced

for Christchurch Airport.

Fiji Airways will begin a permanent second service each week between

Christchurch and Nadi in time for winter holidays in the sun.

From June 23 next year the airline will offer year-round Tuesday morning

departures to Fiji and on to North America, to complement its existing

Saturday service. The full service airline, in two-class configuration,

operates at family friendly hours to and from Fiji.

Christchurch Airport General Manager Airlines and Alliances, Matthew

OUT & ABOUT

By Rachel Smith

New life has grown from

the bones of one of the

city's well known

landmarks, creating a

luxury boutique hotel

which feels surprisingly

like home.

New boutique hotel

Hotel Montreal stands where Chateau

Blanc Apartments once was. The

former tower with its domed roof is

now a lush lawn set for picnics and outdoor

movies, and a thoroughfare running from

Peterborough Street to Kilmore Street invites

the local community to be part of what owners

Lilly Cooper and George Cooper-Dixon have

produced.

“The whole building was lifted and

repaired,” says George, with the extensive

repair work designed to retain all the original

structural walls.

It is in the small details that the hotel comes

to life - the New Zealand merino wool curtains

which are lined like a custom made suit, the

inviting comfort of lounge chairs in the

spacious suites, and the soft green of the

synthetic grass lined balconies which invite

you to remove your shoes.

“Every single thing has been thought

about,” says manager Lucy Gain, who

alongside her sister Amelia is responsible for

the day to day running of the hotel.

Lilly and George worked with in-house

designer Bizz McFarlane to ensure the suites

are a perfect mix of luxury with a personal feel

– a room that you would want to have in your

own home.

Many of the furnishings were designed by

Bizz, with local suppliers such as David

Thurston from Akaroa crafting tables and

serving boards, while the antique pieces

which fill the stunning three bedroom

penthouse were sourced from

New Zealand and Australia.

Everything in the hotel is

also available for

purchase with a

number of artworks

already finding their

way out of the hotel

and into homes

across the city.

In all parts of the

hotel, green spaces

outside the building are

invited in. Large windows

overlook a lush green lawn

and Cranmer Square at the

end of the hallway, and the

luxurious penthouse provides expansive

views across the changing city from every

window and its outdoor area.

The penthouse, as with all suites,

has been designed to meet the

needs of their guests – each

suite includes iPads filled

with tempting details

about the city and iPod

docks with a BOSE

sound system, and in

the penthouse a full

kitchen with the option

of an in-house chef.

Opening quietly in

the middle of October it

is obvious that things are

going well at Hotel

Montreal.

The hotel is vibrant with

visitors, from those staying in their

range of suites to visitors enjoying a drink

or meal at the Polo Bar.

POLO BAR.

The bar and downstairs area are a

showcase of the passion that owner

George and the team share for the game

of polo. Memorabilia and equestrian

images fill the room, with guests and

clients invited to attend matches across

New Zealand. Transport to matches and

locations across Canterbury are provided

in style thanks to the hotel's association

with Land Rover.

Polo Bar is open for dining all day, with

their signature Argentinian menu available from

3pm. The menu features a range of tapas, light

and filling, hot and cold, all served alongside

excellent wines and designed to be enjoyed in their

bar or sheltered outdoor area.

Lilly and George have big plans for the future to

make the most of the expansive site. A vegetable

garden will be created at the rear to provide

produce for the kitchens, and two old classrooms

are to be converted into new spaces, one

a cooking school and conference

building and the other a second Coopers

& Co specialist deli.

Lucy says that many of their guests

have strong memories of time spent at

Chateau Blanc. It is their recommendation

more than any other, and the ability to

create new memories from old, that offer

an insight into what Hotel Montreal is.

BUSH INN By Cheryl Colley

The complete Christmas package…

Keep an eye on the Bush Inn's Facebook

page and its web-site -

www.bushinncentre.co.nz - for

everything that will be on offer over the festive

and holiday season.

Giving to those who have very little is central

to the Bush Inn Centre's values and its point of

difference from other shopping malls. The big

tree in the entrance foyer, surrounded by a

white picket fence – the Tree of Hope - is

waiting to receive your gifts, either wrapped or

unwrapped for Birthright NZ. This charity

believes that all children have the right to a

happy, secure and loving home environment, a

sentiment that is right at the heart of Christmas.

The “Big Fella” aka Santa, will be at the Bush

Inn Centre from 11 – 24 December between

11am and 2pm. He will be very much a focal

point right outside Paper Plus. Your children

can meet him and tell him what they would like

for Christmas while you take a photo of them to

enter into the centre's photo competition.

Upload the photo on to the Bush Inn's social

site, ask your friends and family to vote and you

could win a prize in one of several categories.

You might like to have your prize winning photo

framed by Smith's City for just $4.99.

You really do get the complete Christmas

package at the Bush Inn Centre - food, fashion

and giftware, pampering and entertainment.

Spice Paragon or Lone Star are ideal venues

to hold pre-Christmas functions. Cafe Moko is

open for breakfast so you can meet up with

friends early and then “do” the shops.

The Bush Inn Centre simply

loves Christmas.

It loves being all

dressed up in

its elegant

wreaths and

garlands and

clusters of

trees loaded

with shiny

decorations.

It loves the heaps of specials that

are on offer from all the retailers.

It loves the joy and the fun that its

customers get from socialising at

this time of year in this very

relaxed and friendly environment,

and most of all it loves to be able

to give something back to the

community that has supported it

so well throughout the year.

The new white shirt?

The sweatshirt isn't just a trend. It's now a wardrobe staple,” says Ketz-ke designer Jenny Drury. “The appeal for consumers lies in how effortless they are to wear, and

how good they look. They've definitely become a popular alternative to white shirts and fine knit sweaters. Sweatshirts give you that comfortable, sporty feeling while still looking pulled together, which is very much how Kiwis like to dress.”Ketz-ke collections always include a selection of sweatshirts, and Drury says they are consistent bestsellers.

Turn the page for Jenny's sweatshirt styling tips...

The white shirt used to be a work-to-weekend fashion essential, however over the past few seasons a new style of top has taken over from those fiddly-to-iron white shirts: the simple sweatshirt.

“The

SWEATSHIRTS:

Page 26: Metropol 11-12-14

26 December 11, 2014 Metropol

For work

“They're professional yet modern worn over a shirt or

under a blazer or jacket. Pair with the new voluminous

midi length skirt for a relaxed, up to the minute take

on the corporate suit.”

Going out

“I always bling up Ketz-ke's going out sweats by

adding embellished or embroidered elements, or

using shiny fabrics. Then all you need to do is team

them with a pair of elegant black pants or a statement

skirt.”

On weekends

“Our weekend sweats tend to be screen printed or

embroidered, which makes them perfect with denim

or patterned pants. Wear a slouchy, oversized

sweatshirt with your running leggings and a pair of

bright, graphic trainers, and this outfit can stay on all

day!”

Sweatshirts suit every age and body shape

“I think one of the reasons why sweatshirts are so in

demand is that they suit absolutely everyone. For a

larger figure they don't cling to the body so this makes

them very flattering, and for the slimmer figure an

oversized sweat with a t ight fitting bottom creates an

amazing silhouette.”

Look out for luxe detailing

“The Ketz-ke Wash Sweat has delicate flowers

intricately embroidered onto the chiffon fabric at the

front. Our signature Bang Sweat is another summer

must-have. It's made in a lightweight fabric with a

contrasting printed chiffon in the sleeves and on the

back. This luxe detailing elevates a sweatshirt into

something quite special, yet the easy shape means it

can be worn day or night.”

MERIVALE

Gifts with a difference

By Rachel Smith

With celebrations just around

the corner, Merivale Mall is

creating a Christmas experience

with a difference. “Come in and

make a day of it,” says Nicola

Dolan from Merivale Mall.

Whether it is a visit with the kids, a

cup of tea with the ladies or a long

lazy day of shopping finished off

with a glass of wine at JDV, they offer a wide

selection from fashion and food, to

homeware, accessories and the much loved

gift of a good book.

Their gift wrapping service will be

provided by local charities and not for profit

organisations this year, for a gold coin

donation. The same beautiful wraps that

Merivale Mall is well known for, will be

created by groups including the Sweet

Adelines, Charity Hospital and Bellyful

Christchurch, among others, from Friday 5

December.

For those who just can't quite decide

on the perfect gift, the gift wrapping

station will also be selling gift vouchers.

The vouchers are valid for any store

within the mall, providing a range of

options to suit every person. One such

store is a new arrival to Merivale Mall,

Copper + Pink, which opened its doors

at the beginning of November.

The store has a wonderful range of

beautiful homeware, including icoTraders

vintage industrial look furniture and

lighting, and small pieces for your own

home or as a great Christmas gift. They

are also the exclusive retailer for Melody

Rose tableware, with fine bone china

The selection of inspiring boutiques, with unique identities and attitudes, work together and bounce off one another to

create a vibrant wonderland of retail shopping, entertainment and dining.

“Each of The Colombo’s home and giftware stores carries their own flair and style,” says Caroline Cooper-Dixon, development and marketing manager.

Their focus on quality sees pieces sourced both internationally and from local manufacturers within New Zealand, a portfolio characterised by forward-thinking, long-lasting and environmentally friendly products.

The array of Christmas offerings, from fashions and seasonal cuisine to presents and interior furnishings, is intended to contain something for every individual.

Abode is a clean-cut, Scandinavian-esque, lifestyle and homeware boutique that inspires and brings a unique edge to the spaces it dresses, ideal for those with an artsy and fashionable approach to home living.

Skout is relatively new to The Colombo, and the vintage-inspired gift store is self-described as a “treasure trove of whimsical ware.” Their love of NZ made sees them explore New Zealand’s best jewellery, clothes, cards, toys and more.

Bolt of Cloth is motivated by a love of fabric and design. As stockists of contemporary designer fabrics they are the perfect place for creative types to source material for clothing, cushions, curtains and other furnishings.

Industria’s prevalent industrial style is portrayed in their bespoke furniture and artwork. Their distinct pieces are fit for residential and commercial spaces and as such the store is a haven for those with an eye for bold details.

Redcurrent is a fabulously feminine space, dressed with charming gifts and pieces that mothers, sisters, daughters and friends would love.

Make Christmas Sparkle

By Cheryl Colley

There can be little more special a Christmas gift than an exquisite piece of

jewellery. The family jeweller to generations of Cantabrians - Westende

Jewellers on Colombo Street in Sydenham - knows that Christmas is a time

to be shared with those you love. They are making it easy for long-term and

new customers to light up their world with sparkle and with colour through

the irresistible pieces featured in the store's Christmas catalogue.

Karen Walker

Karen Walker

THE

SELECTION

OF DIAMOND

JEWELLERY, INCLUDING

RINGS, EARRINGS AND

PENDANTS, IS

QUITE SIMPLY

STUNNING.

The catalogue, which can be viewed

under 'specials' online at

www.westendejewellers.co.nz, is full

of gift ideas for men, for women and for

children – really something for

everyone. The selection of diamond

jewellery, including rings, earrings and

pendants, is quite simply stunning.

Then there are pieces featuring

stones in a myriad of colours –

emeralds, sapphires, rubies, blue

topaz, citrines, peridots and rhodolite

garnets. The designs range from classic

to contemporary and come in yellow gold,

rose gold and white gold. Pearls of different

shapes, sizes and colours also adorn the

catalogue's pages as do designs in silver

and pieces from the innovative and delightful

Pastiche range of jewellery.

That essential timepiece is not forgotten

either with watches in the ranges stocked by

Westende Jewellers – Citizen, Casio, and the

latest addition of the very stylish Daniel

Wellington Brand. They also carry a catalogue

selection from Seiko, Pulsar, Lorus, and

Olympic, including children's 'Time Teacher'

watches, all with special prices. Christmas

jewellery shopping does not need to be

expensive either. Charming little sterling silver

earrings for girls are only $19.90 and watches

start from just $39.90.

Speaking of diamonds, Westende Jewellers

have very recently begun selling Astralis

diamonds. These are cuts of diamonds

created by Belgian Gabi Tolkowsky, the

world's most celebrated diamond cutter and

now fashioned by his renowned team of

experienced and gifted craftsmen. What

makes these diamonds exceptional is that

they have 89 facets, 32 more than a

conventionally cut diamond and feature an

8-pointed star cut into the culet.

Christmas would not be complete at

Westende Jewellers without viewing their

extensive range of Kagi and Karen Walker

jewellery as well as their signature vintage

antique pieces - a selection of which can be

viewed online.

The luminous colour of gemstones

and the weave of beautiful fabrics –

some things were made for each

other. A chance meeting of like

minds brought the ideas and energy

of three Christchurch business

women together, forming a

partnership based on a love of

colour and a similar aesthetic.

By Rachel Smith

A meeting of like minds

It is a story which begins with the familiar

hunt for a great pair of jeans. Carmelle Riley

visited Robyn Ling at Halo & Hazard on a

recommendation, and not only found those

jeans but also a store which resonated with her

own sense of design and business ethics –

one in which she could see the perfect fit for

Sisters Collective (SIC) jewellery.

SIC began with Carmelle and business

partner Adrienne Anderson's love of

gemstones. As an aside to their consultancy

business, the two began creating pieces of

jewellery, using the gemstones Carmelle had

become well acquainted with while living in

Dubai.“They have the most amazing markets,”

says Carmelle, the largest Chinese markets

outside of China, providing a huge range of

gemstone beads produced from

stones across the world.

For Adrienne, who has always had

an interest in jewellery and fashion,

there was an immediate love for the

beautiful stones - the warmth of pearls,

onyx, turquoise, moonstone, tiger's eye

and citrine. Together she and Carmelle design

the one-off necklaces, with the result a

combination of both appearance and the

properties of the gems themselves.

“Someone's got to love it,” says Adrienne,

with each design carefully put together by

Carmelle, using the highest quality gems.

With names such as Abundance and

Protection, or Truth, Protection, Love and

Fidelity, each necklace combines charms and

talismans from across the world, such as the blue evil

wings and dagger, as well their own indigenous hei-tiki.

“They have a great weight to them,” says Robyn, who

finds that when the necklaces are added to her fashion

at Halo & Hazard, customers seldom want to take them

off.

Halo & Hazard started out as a pop up store, when

Robyn returned to live in New Zealand after 15 years

abroad. She began selling some of the excellent jeans

she knew well from her seven years living in the

United States, extending her range to include tops

and dresses made with beautiful fabrics filled with

colour, and finding a home for Halo & Hazard at the

South City Centre.

In a city which is known for a love of conservative

black the store offers a refreshing alternative.

“I think Christchurch women love casual and

relaxed pieces,” says Robyn, with her fashion

following the West Coast styles from the United

States. She visits the United States a few times a

years to select her US designed lines, including the

popular Flying Monkey jeans, bright denim for

children and casual wear for young ladies and plus

sizes.

Robyn has created a space where her customers

are welcome to breeze through and check out what

is new in store each week, in both her fashion and

its perfect accessory in SIC jewellery.

For all three women there is a mutual friendship

and admiration of each other's work, a shared eye

for detail - it feels less coincidence and more

choice that all three are wearing Halo & Hazard

fashion with SIC jewellery around wrists and necks.

If you need jewellery valued this is the place

to come. “Precious pieces should be valued

every three – five years to ensure the value is

up to date for insurance purposes,” says Jayne

Douglas, co-owner of the store. “We send the

jewellery to an independent valuer and the

whole process takes from seven to ten working

days with a written valuation at the end.”

People often have jewellery that they are not

wearing anymore lying around in drawers

because the pieces may be old fashioned or

simply not to a person's taste. Why not take

these into Harrington's and work with the expert

staff to have them re-modelled or re-designed

into more modern and appropriate pieces?

Jayne herself has an exquisite ring that has

been made with the diamonds and metal from

several other pieces, including her mother-in-

law's engagement ring and a pair of earrings.

Harrington Showcase Jewellers also offer

repairs on both watches and jewellery. They can

quickly replace watch batteries and straps from

the stock they have on hand and can carry out

minor repairs on site. Anything more complex is

sent to their independent experienced

watchmaker. Harrington's can also organise

water pressure tests on any watch used for

diving over 100 metres. They can apply their

magic to make dull-looking jewellery sparkle

again with their careful cleaning process and

they will advise on and organise any repairs that

need to be made, especially to the claws that

hold precious stones in place on a ring.

Engraving of cups and plaques, christening

mugs, rings and lockets and anything else you

choose can all be arranged through

Harrington's. It really is a one-stop jewellery

shop.

From its stylish shop in Barrington, Harrington Showcase

Jewellers offer not only quality products, but also a range

of services that are very helpful to customers.

Such a pharmacist is Aki Tominari, owner of the South City Pharmacy.

“Being able to offer as wide a range of services to customers as we

“We want to exceed people's expectations and I am really excited that we

minutes. It's very convenient, time-saving and affordable.”

about a medication called 'Sildenafil'. It's a

When husband and wife dentists Grahame Dutton and Christine Duxbury established Duxton Dental their aim was to provide “a superior dental experience with a focus on our patients’ needs for respect, comfort, dignity and education in order to guide them along the path to optimum health and wellness.”

In the 17 years since opening, Duxton

Dental has moved to a purpose built

practice in Riccarton and the business has

also grown to comprise sixteen staff, several

of whom have been with Duxton Dental for

over 10 years.

With dentists Grahame, Christine, Hayley

and Rhonda, hygienists Micayela, Megan and

Corinne, supported by clinical staff Sue, Carol,

Heather, Rose and Jewels and administrators

Annabelle, Sonia, Sally and Katherine, Duxton

Dental is able to offer a comprehensive range

of treatments and services.

Since graduating from Otago Dental School

in 1990, Grahame and Christine have worked

overseas and continue to “pursue excellence

through continuing education, personal and

team growth and mastery of leading edge

demand ongoing

training for dentists to

remain conversant with best

practice techniques. Accordingly, Duxton

Dental staff regularly attend courses and

conferences both in and out of Christchurch.

Oral health is a key indicator of general

health and patients are encouraged to

participate in an ongoing active maintenance

programme. Dental hygiene treatments keep

teeth free of plaque, ensure gums remain

healthy and solve issues of bad breath.

USA research has shown that bad breath is

produced by bacteria based in the throat and

surface of the tongue, rather than the digestive

system as previously thought, and Duxton

Dental has found Therabreath products to be

the most effective solution for bad breath.

As well as dental hygiene and maintenance

of teeth for longevity with fillings, crowns and

bridges, many patients are keen to improve the

look of their teeth with cosmetic dental

treatments such as implants, tooth whitening

and orthodontics including the Invisalign

system.

Invisalign consists of a series of almost

invisible, removable aligners that are changed

every two weeks. Individually manufactured for

your particular teeth, as each aligner is

successively replaced, little by

little the teeth re-align until they

have straightened the

prescribed amount.

For new patients, Duxton

Dental has developed a detailed

and in depth assessment that

covers four main areas; bone and

gums, jaw joints and bite, structural

integrity of teeth and cosmetic

appearance.

Incorporating a digital jaw scan, bite

analysis, oral cancer screen, laser decay

detection, digital photos, gum disease

analysis and dental risk assessment, the

patient receives a full written summary and the

proposed personal treatment plan.

Their CEREC 3 cad/cam system is designed

for single and multiple dental restorations; the

laser is used for endodontics, periodontology

and surgery; the computer controlled Wand

provides effective pain free injections and the

Air Abrasion machine blows away dental

decay without damaging tooth enamel.

Philosophy: Our aim at Duxton Dental is to

provide the highest standards of dental health,

function and aesthetics, to ensure your well-

being and to promote good health.

This will be accomplished by utilising the

latest advances in knowledge, material and

technology.

Duxton Dental is committed to the best

dental care they can provide because “as a

team we believe our patients deserve it.” If

your teeth deserve looking after, phone 348

FOR THAT SUMMER HOLIDAY... Perfect bags

Now Instore!

Have bag will travel…

Graham Griffiths began handcrafting bags

fresh out of high school, alongside and with

the expert guidance of his father. Today the

family business is home to a variety of modern,

colourful and durable options imported from Europe

and abroad.

While Graham no longer makes the bags, he

understands how they are made and what equates

to high quality, and is naturally picky when it comes

to selecting products for his store. He brings in high

quality pieces that other providers aren't likely to

have, keeping their selection unique and inspiring.

Reputable brands like LouenHide

and Pierre Cardin add to the

sophisticated selection, while brands

like Zoom Lite from Australia offers a

series of quality bags with a smart-

casual factor.

“We try to cover most aspects of travel

care and cater to everybody, with friendly

and helpful service.”

They rely on their understanding of what it

is that customers are looking for in travel

and everyday bags as well as in customer

service. The team of staff have been trained

by Graham to assist in finding and providing

information on suitable pieces for

individuals and making that individual's

experience a fulfilling one.

They know that tastes and needs change

with time, and they continue to evolve with

their customers and offer an unparalleled

range that is now exclusively handpicked

from overseas to keep prices down.

With Graham having learned many

insights from his father and expanding his

knowledge over “a lifetime” in the industry it

makes sense that people travel from all over

Canterbury to source their pieces.

Just Bagz can be found at Dress-Smart,

409 Main South Road, Hornby, and is open

Benjamin Franklin once said “Tell me

and I forget, teach me and I remember,

involve me and I learn.” While it was

some time in the 18th century that he

uttered those words, he could have

been describing the philosophy behind

Halswell Preschool.

We don't tell children how it's done; we guide them to try it for themselves.

Learning through engagement

We see the role of the teacher as

someone who actively plays with

children, a person who expands

children's thinking skills and genuinely

engages with each child,” co-owner Eileen

Keane explains. “With this support from the

teachers the children are able to develop the

ability to learn for themselves.” With 18 children per day in the Over-Two

area and just eight in the Under Twos, the

Centre's conscious decision to keep group

sizes small allows teachers to have more one

on one time with children and ensures the

programme meets the learning interests of all

children. “We believe our small group sizes

really promote the children's wellbeing. It

allows the teachers to develop stronger

relationships with the children and also allows

the teachers to develop authentic partnerships

with families/whanau based on relationships

that foster honest communication, trust and

respect.” Eileen and co-owner Joy Scott wanted to

replicate the strong model they had created at

Elmwood Preschool nine years before,

establishing the Halswell Junction Road

preschool in 2001. “We wanted another place

where children could learn to take risks in a

safe environment; whether it's a physical risk

like jumping from one item to another or

challenging themselves intellectually,” Eileen

says. “We don't tell children how it's done; we

guide them to try it for themselves.”

Another area the Centre excels in is allowing

46 December 11, 2014 Metropol

children the freedom to express their thoughts

and feelings. “We teach them to do that in an

appropriate way, in a supportive environment.”

Bi-culturalism is also a key component and

the team recognises the importance of this

learning. “Bi-culturalism is really important for

everyone in New Zealand and preschool is a

great place to start modelling this.”

There are spaces available in the Under-Two

area. With an open door policy, you're

welcome to view any time during centre hours

CUISINERECIPES FOOD WINE BARS & CAFÉS RESTAURANTS

For the ham:

Remove skin, not the fat (slide your hand under the skin to

remove, leave the skin on the hock). Retain the skin, sit the

ham on skin as a trivet while cooking in the roasting dish, to

this also add 1-2 cups of water for extra moisture.

Score ham where the skin has been removed to make a

2-3cm diamond pattern and stud with the whole cloves.

Glaze method:

In a saucepan simmer for 5-10 minutes the marmalade, brown sugar, orange juice,

pineapple juice, ground coriander, ground cumin seed and ½ of the chili flakes and

whole grain mustard (you want this all to reduce slightly, by 30%).

Pre heat oven to 160C and spoon or brush some of the glaze mixture on to the

skinless ham, then place in oven.

Keep basting the ham with this glaze and the pan liquid several times.

Cook ham for 10 minutes per kg or until glaze is sticky and shiny.

Remove from oven, sprinkle with remaining chili flakes, grate on orange skin.

PROVIDES A WINDOW

TELESCOPE IS PROVIDED

FOR THOSE WHO WANT

A CLOSER LOOK. THE

REST OF THE CEILING IS

A STUNNING VISTA OF

STAR-SPANGLED

GLASS.

Stellar, situated on the top floor of the

striking new building on 235 Riccarton

Road, is an exciting and unique new

restaurant and bar that literally takes you to the

heavens.

Stars and star gazing is the theme.

The central glass ceiling provides a

window to the skies and a

telescope is provided for

those who want a closer

look. The rest of the ceiling

is a stunning vista of star-

spangled glass.

It's an enchanting and

elegant setting to enjoy

fine dining in the

evenings and more

casual fare during the day.

The food is

contemporary European with

a Kiwi influence and, like the

decor, shows flair and originality.

The evening menu is extensive,

exciting and adventurous - a mix of classic

and modern. Starters include fresh fish sashimi

with mango lemongrass puree and cauliflower

fritters. Among the entrees are Bluff Oyster

Chowder with smoky bacon and southern

clams (also available at lunchtime), quail,

prosciutto salad, and persimmon; pan-fried

scallops with sweet corn and pork belly, and

goat's curd gnocchi with watercress and black

olive tapenade.

The mains offer something for every taste

and appetite. Green pea risotto with goat's feta

and brown butter, pan-fried grouper with

whipped

cauliflower, beef

fillet with oysters,

potato puree and

french beans, herb

crusted rack of

lamb, crispy pork belly

with kumara miso puree,

pan-fried duck breast with

parsnip puree, sautéed baby cos

and grilled haloumi are but a few of the choices

on offer.

Mouth-watering desserts include time

honoured classics with a twist: tiramisu,

chocolate pudding with banana marmalade,

blueberry tart, passion fruit pavlovas, carrot

and white chocolate fondant, affogato and

more.

High tea (now offered by upmarket

establishments worldwide) is served at Stellar

from Thursday to Sunday. The starry setting is

a perfect venue for a ladies' catch-up, offering

the opportunity to enjoy dainty sweet and

savoury tit-bits with tea, coffee or an alcoholic

drink in classy, quiet surroundings.

Lunch and breakfast are more casual affairs,

offering beautifully cooked fare at affordable

prices in upmarket surroundings.

Stellar, with its unique concept and

interesting menu, is an exciting addition to the

rapidly growing Christchurch dining scene.

There's also plenty of parking behind the new

building.

CUISINE

The new Coriander's restaurant and bar has just opened at 222 St Asaph Street, situated

in the eye-catching new building that is a replica of the former 1860s Occidental Hotel.

A Bollywood room, a Tiger booth, a huge

sandstone relief of the Taj Mahal,

patterned tiles reminiscent of a

Rajasthan fort and a colonial style verandah

create an atmospheric setting.

With the opening of this establishment,

owner Amardeep Singh has not only expanded

his culinary empire, he has also raised his

already high bar for food and customer

service. Of course, the ethnic Indian cuisine

served at the new inner city venue is of the

same consistent high quality that is delivered

at the other four Coriander's. But the new

venue offers more options - bar and lunch

menus, exciting additions to the dinner menu,

a lively wine and cocktail list, and Indian beers

on tap.

To celebrate the opening, a Christmas

banquet offer enables diners to choose

anything off the menu. Book the funky

Bollywood Room, with its walls papered in

colourful movie posters (which seats up to 50)

and you have an exotic venue (complete with

Indian background music) for your Christmas

function.

This is one of the three separate areas (four

if you include the veranda) that cleverly

enables this large restaurant and bar to cater

for imitate and large groups who can enjoy

dining, drinking, or even dancing. Yes, a DJ

makes use of the impressive sound system

from 10pm to 1am on Thursday, Friday and

Saturday, and is also available for private

parties.

Each “room” is subtly different and attention

has been paid to every detail. Paintwork glows

in rich reds and greens, striking murals set the

scene, dark timbers contrast with honey

coloured marble table tops. Pendants – some

modern, others traditional - add intrigue, while

the bar is aglow with back lit marble and

glittering green and gold tiles. Just crossing

the threshold to this marvelous new building is

an experience.

The new Coriander's is open from 11.30am

until late daily. The bar menu is available from

2pm to 5pm, 10pm to 12.30pm. Lunch is

served from 11.30am to 4.30pm. Takeaways

can be collected from a discrete entrance at

Welles Street, where there is also parking for

the restaurant and bar.

It's another exciting and sophisticated

addition to the rapidly emerging inner city

entertainment scene.

CUISINE

Ingredients:

Pineapple Vanilla Vinaigrette

3 C Pineapple juice freshly

extracted from 1 large

pineapple

1 ½ Tbsp juice of jalapeno,

stems and seeds discarded

2 vanilla pods, split in half

lengthwise and scraped

2 Tbsp cider wine vinegar

2 Tbsp lime, squeezed

1 C extra virgin olive oil

2 Tbsp tamari or light soy

sauce

Kosher or sea salt and freshly

cracked pepper to taste

Grilled fish and fruit

8-12 bamboo skewers soaked

in water for at least 30 minutes

4 equal pieces hapuku, bass

or similar firm white fish

Selection of fresh fruit such as

mango, pineapple, nectarines,

figs with skin on, thickly sliced

Method:

Pineapple vanilla vinaigrette

Place the freshly extracted pineapple

juice, jalapeno juice and scraped

vanilla pods, with seeds, into a pot

and simmer gently until reduced down

to 1C/250ml, stirring occasionally.

Place the reduction in a clean mixing

bowl. Whisk in the remaining

ingredients, season with salt and

pepper, then cover and chill until

needed.

Grilled fish and fruit

Soak skewers in water

Pat fish dry and place in a baking

dish. Brush each piece with a

generous portion of the vinaigrette

and allow fish to marinate for 20-30

minutes as the grill heats up.

Carefully skewer fruit, brush with

marinade and set aside.

When ready to cook, wipe the grill

lightly with oil and place fruit skewers

and fish on the grill. Carefully turn

when sides of fish turn opaque and

fruit has seared.

Serve immediately with additional

vinaigrette on the side.

Natasha MacAller, author of Vanilla Table – The essence of

exquisite cooking from the world's best chefs, shares Norman

Van Aken's blend of fresh spicy flavours: pineapple marinated

fish with grilled fruit and spicy pineapple vanilla vinaigrette. She says

this recipe requires an extraction juicer to make, but that it's a great

machine to own for many reasons…

Build Back Smarter is a free service

providing advice about insulation,

heating methods and energy saving

measures such as double glazing, ventilation

and lighting.

The advisory service is a joint initiative

involving the Christchurch City Council, the

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority

(CERA), and the Energy Efficiency and

Conservation Authority (EECA).

Homeowners can contact one of the

service's assessment providers who will

prepare a healthy home improvement plan

tailored to the needs and budget of the home

owner.

Christchurch City Councillor and housing

spokesperson Glenn Livingstone says about

20,000 homes will be rebuilt or repaired over

the next three years.

“This is the perfect time to consider

building in energy efficiency options which

will make homes warmer, drier, healthier and

cheaper to run,” Councillor Livingstone says.

“We expect the service will be popular

because it is free. However, the

improvements are voluntary and homeowners

need to meet the cost of the recommended

changes,” he says.

Free healthy home assessmentsChristchurch people rebuilding

or repairing their earthquake

damaged homes can now get

free advice to ensure they are

warm, dry and energy efficient.

“Introducing energy efficiency into your

rebuild makes good sense. It might cost a bit

more to start with, but it will save money in the

long term.”

Major banks are supporting the service by

extending mortgages and waiving application

fees.

Low income families with health issues may

be eligible for free ceiling and underfloor

insulation through Warm Up New Zealand.

Over the next three years the Council will

invest up to $600,000 in the service – about

40 per cent of the total cost – with partner

organisations paying the remainder.

Although Build Back Smarter is primarily

for earthquake repairs or rebuilding, it is

available to all Christchurch home owners

and landlords.

Community Energy Action, Right House

and Smart Energy Solutions are Build Back

Smarter advisors. Homeowners can engage

them to do the recommended home

improvements but are also free to choose

their own tradespeople.

People interested in taking advantage of

the free assessments can go to

Interior design trends

Recent trends are an amalgamation of

traditional and modern interior

designs. The use of natural materials

and colours is aesthetically preferred. Some

handcraft items have also made a come-

back. Colourful textures and modern

geometry, along with the use of glass or

other see through objects are also popular at

present.

Greener and natural options have become

the latest trend in almost every aspect of life.

Following with this trend, natural materials

have also made a mark on interior design.

Natural wood colours and textures in

furniture and 'green' carpets are some of the

examples of how people are bringing nature

into their houses. The versatility of natural

elements allows experimenting with various

designs and incorporating a transitional

style. It also has the advantage of giving the

house a cleaner look.

Handcrafts are effective in making a classy

combination of traditional and modern

People love to decorate their homes with the latest interior design

trends. To keep up with the latest trends, people read about them in

magazines and on the internet; they also consult design specialists

design. They've made their way back into the

interior designing industry for several years

now. While using them in our homes we

should be careful not to 'overdo' it.

Transparent and see through materials are

widely being used at present. Objects made of

glass or other transparent materials have the

advantage of allowing the play of natural light

and they don't create dark shadows.

DIAPHANOUS CURTAINS, GLASS BALUSTRADES AND TRANSPARENT OR MIRRORED FURNITURE ARE SOME OF THE EXAMPLES WHICH WE CAN USE TO INCORPORATE THIS LATEST DESIGN TREND.

Diaphanous curtains, glass balustrades and

transparent or mirrored furniture are some of

the examples which we can use to

incorporate this latest design trend.

Much like traditional design, the latest design

trends also include using bold patterns and

bright primary colours. Objects with smooth

and soft edges are now more preferred over

straight lines.

Greenwash or green building?

elements of efficient home design are at the

front of my mind right throughout each and

every project – as they should be for all design

professionals.

The issue is that there is a considerable

difference between energy efficient design and

greenwash.

In isolation there is a cost associated with

energy efficient decisions, however these

decisions and costs need to be made and

viewed in balance with the rest of the design

and build. In my view, the NZIA submission

highlights that legislation may take away this

balance.

Legislation brings a one-dimensional

approach to good design. It creates a pathway

that doesn't incorporate other ways of thinking.

And by legislating Homestar, we will see

Christchurch turn its back on other good

design decisions that offset any added cost.

When compared with a balanced view of

design, Homestar is unsophisticated. It doesn't

inherently allow weight to be given to one

element over another. Unlike engaging a

design professional where, for example, you

are able to decide to offset your build costs

with the running costs of the home. Homestar

instead gives weight to aspects of the build that

are deemed important with limited trade-off. As

an example, building within 800m of local

amenities, such as shops, will automatically

start you on your way to a Homestar rated

home, if you are 801m away you will not. This

isn't a criticism, simply a fact. There needs to

be a line in the sand and 800m is that line. The

problem is, irrespective of the competence

and ingenuity employed by the design

professional to deal with this constraint, once

the line is crossed, the design can't be

awarded points in this area.

The issue I have, is that initiatives and

practices like Homestar have a good intent

and as a design community we should be

encouraging our clients to put these practices

into play, however there is no place for it in

legislation. Yes we want to achieve housing

affordability and at the same time lift our

housing standards, but by inserting certain

legislative requirements into Christchurch

alone, but not 40 kilometers up the road in

Hurunui, we are losing equitable

consideration. Should our City Council have

the authority to require homes to be built to a

higher standard than is required under the

Building Code?

Homestar has a place but not tucked into

legislation, especially when it doesn't have the

independence you would expect in a

regulatory environment. Essentially, run by its

members it is just a club. While there is some

government involvement through EECA it is

not subject to the rigors of statue. There is no

robustness, and essentially changes could be

made on a whim as can any Incorporated

Society.

We need to be approaching energy efficient

building in a different manner. It should be

about inserting the home, or building, into its

environment in a way that focuses on the

spiritual or metaphysical reason behind why

we want it to be sustainable not why it must

be. caarc.co.nz

Cymon Allfrey

Derived from a perceived demand in the

market, as well as a need to

understand it more clearly, I recently

became a Homestar practitioner.

Under the Christchurch City Council's

Proposed Christchurch Replacement District

Plan (PCRDP) it will be mandatory for

residential homes to be built to a Homestar

Level 6 rating, or include certain energy

related features. This is a proposed planning

rule that instantly raises alarm bells and

potentially will see us fighting against the tide

of housing affordability.

The first question we need to ask ourselves

is whether energy efficient homes are more

expensive to build? And secondly, whether we

are prepared to compromise good design

through legislation?

In a recent article published in The Press, a

comment taken from the New Zealand Institute

of Architects (NZIA) submission to the PCRDP

was used to highlight potential rising costs

associated with energy efficient homes. The

NZIA submission suggested there would be an

estimated additional cost of $15,000 per

dwelling to comply with the proposed

legislative requirements. There are dangers in

considering isolated comments, and what

wasn't made clear in the article was that the

NZIA submission against legislation of

Homestar goes far deeper than simply an

issue around cost.

By focussing on the increased cost we are

putting a price on design and ignoring that

legislation around good design will result in far

greater issues as we take away the value and

skill added by design professionals.

I am passionate in my view that our homes

need to respond to their environment in

positive ways. From the materials used, to

meeting the needs of the homeowner, to the

use of space and the list goes on; these

Whether you run them up the wall, across the floor, along the bathtub or behind the stove, tiles are

a design element which have stood the test of time. And the tiling team to talk to is Tile Master.

Masters of tiling

Aspecialist in all types of tiling, including ceramic,

mosaic and porcelain, Tile Master offers a highly

experienced team of tradesmen, tasked with

adding significant style and value to your home,

whether that is through tiling work or exterior

plastering, which the talented team also offers.

And, let's face it, when it comes to first

impressions, you want the wow factor on the

“One of our key points of difference is the

ability to show you the completed project

more than 10 years of experience under its commercial

belt. The company can provide a complete tiling,

waterproofing and under-tile heating system,

completing the preparation works and supplying

and installing the tiles, water proofing systems,

shower glass solutions and much more.

“The best part is seeing the finished product,”

Issac says.

“No one ever walks into a house and says

'wow who did your plumbing?',” he laughs. “So

there's a real sense of accomplishment when

people can physically see the hard work you've

put in and admire the finished product.”

The company has built its reputation on

“We always strive to give complete customer

With the objective of being

unique yet stylish, owner

Karen Sheridan has

gathered a fabulous mix of

designer furniture, homeware,

lighting and gifts.

Large tables, plush sofas and

bright bold colours invite you to

make a statement in your home.

“I've always been influenced by

colour and so I encourage

customers to be adventurous. Even a

single item lifts the neutral tones within

a house or apartment,” says Karen.

Out of the Box is a testament to her own

tastes, honed during 20 years in the clothing

industry before looking for new challenges in

home interiors and furnishing. Karen chooses

everything for the shop herself, sourcing eye

catching pieces from overseas or in New

Zealand so long as they fit the store's

persona.

She recently posted colour ideas for a

couch on Facebook. Taking note of the

responses which favoured vivid emerald

green, a stunning velvety feather-filled couch

enjoys current pride of place at Out of the

Box!

Gloriously green, the soft sinkable sofa sits

alongside one of Karen's wonderful floor

rugs. Unique rugs are not always easy to find,

but as well as those in the store featuring

faces, zebras or retro geometric designs, she

has access to a wide selection of appealing

colours, shapes and styles.

With Christmas approaching, Out of the

Box has a great selection of gifts that you

won't find anywhere else. Karen can also

source

items for

customers if

they are looking

for a particular item,

style or design.

Pendant lights and globes hang from the

rafters, bright modern linens and table

settings, candles and ultra-modern

Christmas trees in vibrant non-traditional

shades of pink, purple or yellow will be what

you discover.

In a shop full of fabulous stock, there are

even mermaid fins to delight kids at the pool

or the beach!

Inspired by a demand for furniture post-

earthquakes and people looking for new

and beautiful items after such a terrible

time, Karen began trading 'out of a box' from

two containers in Sumner. Following that

from pop-up stores at Ferrymead and

Riccarton, Out of the Box has now found a

Enticed by all things French? Tempted by the colour blue?

Love things quirky and quality? At French Blue in Elmwood

Village, Normans Road, a cornucopia of gorgeousness awaits,

with an eclectic selection of homewares, clothing, bags, books,

jewellery, French toiletries, and more, all judiciously selected

from artisans around New Zealand and across the world.

Cornucopia of gorgeous things

New treasures abound. From Mexico

comes huge variety: a sideboard in

white pine with grey painted louvre

doors, funky metal and glass soap holders, an

exquisite silver bow ring, and a large hand-

painted blue and white pottery platter. Just in

time for summer entertaining are bright and

breezy hand-made block-printed cotton table

cloths, table runners, and serviettes in indigo

and white or perky summer colours, designed

by Catherine Bell (former editor of Dish).

Holiday is a new brand of resort wear, with

floaty caftans and funky little dresses with

stylish designs and clever detailing.

Accessorise with matching chunky necklaces,

rings, scarves and 'look at me” watches.

French Blue is also famed for its seriously

luxurious jewellery and if those made in Milan,

“to die for” topaz and rose gold hoop earrings

look familiar - Kate Middleton apparently owns

a pair! For non-classicists, ultra-modern pearl

and mixed precious metal rings from Israel

make an unforgettable statement.

Lifestyle books are another French Blue

speciality. “How to be Parisian Wherever You

Are” is sure to amuse, while cooks will love

Pegasus Winery's “The Vintner's Table” and

“Recipes from the Tartan Kitchen,” which

French Blue is stocking to support St Andrew's

College.

From kitchen and foodie items (like colourful

'60s style Danish enamel pots with screw on

wooden handles), to Kandle Co soy wax

candles in Christmas fragrances, bags galore

(including French market baskets), unusual

cards and Christmas decorations, there is

plenty to tempt at this clever and much loved

gift shop/cafe.

Salvage operations on local riversA review of both minimum flow

cut-offs and the location of the

Environment Canterbury

(ECan) flow meters requires

urgent attention according to

Fish & Game, as it begins fish

salvage operations on local

rivers and streams.

With the current weather system

gripping the province, the long, hot

days accompanied by warm drying

winds are crippling local waterways, according

to Fish & Game spokesperson Andrew Currie.

“The long hot summer was forecast months

ago, so what processes were put in place to

protect both those with permitted activities, and

the life-supporting capabilities of these

streams?”

Mr Currie says he has received numerous

calls from anglers and rural landowners

concerned at the exceptionally low flows in

some local rivers and streams, especially the

Cust River.

“ONE

LOCAL TOLD

ME THAT IN HIS

30 YEARS IN THE

AREA HE HAS NEVER

SEEN IT (CUST RIVER)

SO LOW AT

THE STOKE

BRIDGE.

Fish & Game staff

Salvaging Cust River.

Brown trout salvaged from Cust River last month.

Mr Currie adds “We expect

stretches of rivers like the Selwyn,

Ashley and Cust to dry up, but it is

abnormally early; and why should it

take Fish & Game alerting ECan to

the situation for action to be taken?”

“It is also very frustrating to see

ECan's flow meter for the Cust River

located in lower reaches, where the

flow remains very stable, and not in

the problem areas further up where

the river is dry and we have already

had to salvage fish. The location of

the meter does not provide a true

indication of what is in fact

happening over the whole

waterway.”

“One local told me that in his 30

years in the area he has never seen

it (Cust River) so low at the Stoke

Bridge, and another woman who

called in after spotting stranded fish

said, 'we expect it to dry up

alongside our property, but not 'til

after Christmas.”

“Fish & Game believes blame

does not lie wholly with the

landowners, as they are just

conducting their business under

conditions set out by ECan. It is

allocation, monitoring and

compliance which are the

issues, and these need

addressing before we all

lose out,” Mr Currie said.

Fish & Game says while

the situation is potentially

compounded by the lack of

snow melt this year,

regional authorities need to

explain just what measures

are in place to ensure there is

water there for all.

Outdoor entertaining

As temperatures rise, now is the time to consider your outdoor entertaining areas and there are many options available to create your perfect al fresco space. The traditional kiwi backyard barbie has evolved into an array of options for creating a relaxing and comfortable setting for you and your guests.

one of the joys of summer!

Cooking

The gas barbeque is very versatile but other choices are becoming

increasingly popular:Ÿ Wood fired pizza ovens Ÿ Integrated barbeques can be incorporated into walls, tables and

benches for smaller spacesŸ Outdoor kitchens (often complete with cooking appliances, bench

spaces, fridges and sinks) are in demand. Construction can be open

air or within a permanent outdoor room to ensure year round use. Traditionally the majority of food preparation prior to a barbeque

occurred inside, in the kitchen. The advent of outdoor benches and work

spaces has been a game changer, enabling the whole process to take

place outside. Hosts are free to mingle with guests throughout

preparations without trekking back and forth between indoors and

outdoors. Benches are a great way to minimise clutter and maintain the

aesthetic of your area by providing a space for gas bottles and kitchen

items.

TMDesign of your outdoor Lifespace

Whether it is small alterations or a total overhaul, getting good design

advice from the outset is crucial to the success of your outdoor

entertaining area. A professional landscape architect will be able to

fuse your ideas and inspirations in to a workable design solution. Ÿ The chilly Christchurch easterly has bought about the untimely

demise of many a barbeque on an otherwise sunny evening. A

change in the aspect or orientation of the area, or strategically

positioned windbreaks can provide protection from the prevailing

wind.Ÿ Sundrenched outdoor living is good, but protection from our harsh

New Zealand sun is also important to ensure your guests aren't

barbequed alongside your sausages! Umbrellas, Louvres or

retractable roofs are just some options for sun protection. Solid

roofing will protect from both sun and drizzle. Ÿ The outdoor area may have a beautiful view to preserve or a less

desirable view to obscure. Maintaining a clear line of view to see

the kids playing may be an important consideration.Ÿ Accessibility of your outside space is crucial. Extending your

internal kitchen into the outdoor living area may be a functional

solution. An alternative is an open plan internal space which

seamlessly leads to an outdoor entertaining area or kitchen. We commonly invest countless hours in creating our internal living

areas. As our fascination for outdoor living grows, so should we

consider it an investment designing functional and beautiful TMLifespaces .

FurnishingsThe furnishings you choose for your outdoor entertaining area will reflect

as much about you as its internal counterpart. It is worth investing in

décor for your outdoor space which fits with your style and that of your

home. Ÿ In a single space, is it more important for you to have a dining table

and chairs or less formal furniture such as couches and a coffee

table? Could skilled design allow you areas for both dining and

lounging?Ÿ Would you prefer evolved or bespoke furniture or would an 'off the

shelf' range meet your needs?Ÿ The use of pots, sculptures, water features and lighting can all add to

your outdoor environment. Outdoor sound systems and even outdoor

televisions are available for those who want to enjoy their outdoor

living - but not miss out on the cricket!

HOME

In a tight space? The preference for including ensuites and powder rooms in the average family home has accentuated the demand for space-saving bathroom fixtures that create the perception of space in a limited area.

Apopular solution is the low profile wall hung basin - or a counter top version that can be mounted on an undersized

wall mounted vanity. Kohler Company, a leader in bathroom design and innovation, has expanded its basin offering in response to this trend by introducing a number of new designs and adding extra sizes to best-selling existing models.

While each of the basins is compact in design they forfeit nothing in the way of style or eye catching features.

For those craving a statement piece with sleek, geometric lines the Reve offers three different sizes, integrated counter space for toiletries and a beautifully faceted profile. The largest 1055mm wide model protrudes just 500mm from the wall while the smaller 800mm model has a more compact 412mm protrusion and the mini 650mm option a mere 400mm!

One of the newest additions to the Kohler range is the sleek, lineal Reach wall mount basin with optional integrated towel rail in brushed steel. Protruding just 225mm from

the wall and with a width of 500mm it offers the perfect solution for tight spaces while allowing ample room for ablutions.

For a dose of unadulterated luxury in a confined space the Antilia Wading Pool slab of beautiful cast glass is hard to beat. Its subtle rippled texture and slightly concave shape perfectly mimics the time-worn surface of natural stone under a cascade of water.

And for really tight spaces a corner basin, like the Ove, can be the ideal fit. It takes just

THE MINIMALIST INTERIOR DESIGNER USES LIGHT TO DEFINE THE FORMS AND THE SPACES WHERE OTHER DESIGNERS WOULD USE MATERIALS AND FINISHES.

76 December 11, 2014 Metropol

HOME

Minimalist art is self-contained art;

external references and emotion

are avoided. Interior designers

who work with minimalism tend to broadly

follow this ideal. The approach to

minimalism in interior design is less

rigorous than it is in the art world. This is to

be expected as a building's interior has to

serve a function beyond the aesthetic – it

has to be conducive to the act and to the

art of living.

There are several distinct objectives within

minimalist interior design and the task of

the designer is to make these rationales

come together as seamlessly as possible.

This is no easy task and involves a lot more

than knocking down a couple of non-

supporting walls and painting everything

white.

Minimalism: below the surface

By Steve Wolfe

The spiritual

The first objective is the spiritual. Minimalist

interiors are designed to facilitate a sense of calm

and peace. People's surroundings have a huge

impact on the way that they feel and consequently

act. To this end colours tend to be extremely pale

or white so as not to induce an emotional

response. The minimalist interior designer uses

light to define the forms and the spaces where

other designers would use materials and finishes.

Open plan designs are favoured as this type of

architecture promotes a calm, detached feeling.

Patterns and textures are generally not used unless

they are essential to an object's function. An

unfinished brick wall could easily be incorporated

into minimalist design as the texture is directly

related to its function, but wallpaper with an image

of bricks would be about as anti-minimalist as it is

possible to be.

The practical

The second objective is the practical. Multi-

purpose objects are important in this regard.

The floor that is also heating, windows

arranged for the gathering of heat as well as

light, and even the sofa that converts to a

bed all follow the minimalist ideal.

Energy efficiency

The importance of energy conservation in the

light of recent discoveries regarding climate

change and potential fuel scarcities means

that energy efficiency is now an essential part

of minimalist design.

Minimalist interior design came

about as a direct result of the

Minimalist art movement which

first surfaced in the 1950s in

New York and dominated the art

world through the 1950s and

1960s.The art movement came

from the overarching movement

of the time, Modernism. This is

why the terms Modernism and

Minimalism are often used

almost interchangeably when

discussing design. While it is

accurate to say that a minimal

approach is a modern one, the

reverse is not always true.

There's no market hotter than housing right now.

Car of the YearBy Ben Selby

As this is the last

issue of

Metropol’s

AutoPlus for 2014, now is

a good time to look back

over the greatest hits of

the automotive world this

year. Naturally, this

involves going over all

the cars we have tested

this year with a fine

toothcomb, narrowing

our list down to the best

car in each segment and

from there, determining

an overall winner. So

here you go, our pick of

the top seven stunners of

2014 and the overall Car

of the Year…

Countdown to

hen you mention luxury large

WSUVs to the average Joe, naturally a Range Rover of

some description will come to mind. This year, the new Range Rover Sport has been a sales smash for Land Rover New Zealand, with 150 units already being snapped up pre launch earlier this year. Once driven, it was easy to see why.Sure, the previous Range Rover Sport was impressive, but still felt like an unfinished symphony. The new Sport however, as we found out in the first half of 2014, was a stunner. With a variety of spec levels and engine choices – including the all conquering supercharged V8 – the sky was the limit when it came to dressing up your sport.Plus, the new car proved itself to be so capable in every situation it came across, whether parked outside the best restaurant in town or climbing every mountain and fording every stream, the Sport can get it done, making it the obvious choice of AutoPlus Large SUV of the Year 2014.

What is a city car you may ask? Well, it has to be

great on fuel, able to park in even the tiniest gaps,

and be as cheap as chips to buy. The one car that

ticked those boxes in 2014 was easily the Skoda Citigo.Identical underneath to Volkswagens Up! the Citigo’s 55kW

three cylinder engine and simple manual are all you need.

Inside, you get the bare essentials. Although features such

as air con, electric windows and iPod connectivity are worth

having. On the road is where the Citigo shone. The petrol

three pot burbled away like an old Porsche 911 and having

small wheels and tyres meant for a physical driving

experience. In some ways, as near as possible to an

original Mini. Plus it’s yours for as little as $18k.

The Honda Jazz has always been a favourite in the Supermini segment,

with many units being snapped up – particularly those above 50 –

since arrival in New Zealand three generations ago.Having to fight off stiff opposition from Suzuki and Mazda has not been easy,

though the new generation Jazz for 2014 ticked all the boxes in this segment,

making it a class leader and AutoPlus supermini of the year. With prices for the range starting at $23,700, the new Jazz packs a tonne of

kit as standard equipment, such as satellite navigation, Bluetooth and

iPod/USB connectivity. There is generous head and legroom and generous

visibility all round; you can have either 1.3 or 1.5-litre four pot with six speed

manual or automatic transmission. It’s genuinely fun to drive too.

The Hot Hatch scene has been getting crowded for quite some time.

Last year, our favourite was the Renault Megane RS265. While king of

the hill on the track, day to day use was not its best feature. So the

winner of Hot Hatch of the Year 2014 is a car with the get up and go, but

with added day to day practicality – the 2014 Volkswagen Golf R.Despite costing close to $70k (the R is $20,000 more than its iconic and

less powerful GTi counterpart), the Golf R delivers in every way. For

starters, thanks to a 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine chucking

out 300 horsepower, it is the most powerful Golf in existence.Four wheel drive and launch control also mean a zero to

100km/h of 4.9 seconds. Flat out you will be touching

250km/h. While we loved the neck snapping acceleration,

the pop and bang as you shift gears via the DSG box

and the effortless ability to cover plenty of ground in no

time at all, its everyday usability and practicality mean

the new Golf R gets the thumbs up from us for 2014.

Best in class Hot Hatch

Why is the Jaguar F Type our AutoPlus Sports Car of the Year 2014? For

starters, just look at it. Its svelte and gorgeous body harks back to the

glorious E Type of 1961. Roof down or up, it’s a stunner.Whether you opt for the 3.0-litre V6, V6S or fire spitting V8 S, the torrent of symphonic

bliss coming from those crafted tail pipes is guaranteed to get your blood pumping.

The eight speed ZF automatic box sending drive to the rear creates a simply epic way

of getting around.Yes the boot is tiny and the Porsche 911 cabriolet is a more complete package, but a

true sports car, no matter how expensive or capable, should make you feel great when

behind the wheel. And the F Type does just that. Plus, Jaguar has recently announced plans

to offer the F Type with four wheel drive and a manual box. Talk about icing on the cake.

WE LOVEDTHE NECK SNAPPING

AND THE EFFORTLESS ABILITY TO COVER

AutoPlus first tested the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV during a special

preview drive late last year, but it was early this year when we got to

spend some serious time with the first Plug in Hybrid Electric SUV to hit

New Zealand Roads. At $59,990, it’s a bit dear for an Outlander, but then again, your average

Outlander does not return fuel consumption figures of 1.9L/100km. Up to

80kms of silent emissions free electric driving can be had, while charging the

lithium ion batteries overnight will cost a mere $1.41. Regenerative braking also

helps with the charging process when on the move.To drive, the PHEV feels much like a car, not a lab experiment. Though the

silence took some getting used to, weighted steering, minimal body roll and the

benefit of instant low down torque make a huge difference on the open road.

Best in class Saloon

The Mercedes C-Class has always been a force to be reckoned with in

the executive saloon category. Countless back to back road tests have

seen C-Class go up against rivals like Audi’s A4 and the wonderful

BMW 3-Series. However, while previous generations of the C-Class were very

good indeed, the initial package was not quite there yet. The new car though.

Oh my God… Borrowing design elements from the S-Class and CLA, the new C wowed us

from the get go with an array of swooping curves, LEDS and chrome accents.

Interior design received and overhaul too. Once again drawing inspiration

from the flagship S-Class, it is a sublime place to be. Five driving modes,

Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual are at your command by the

agility toggle switch found on the centre console. Plus a swipe keypad

controlled all infotainment systems much like an iPad.Testing the C200 with AMG line spec was a treat. While no hard core speed

machine, we found there to be little on the road in this market which handled

and performed quite like the new C. AutoPlus saloon of the year? Of course.

However, of all the eight automotive gems which have rocked

Kiwi roads this year, there can be only one winner (an

overused expression but bear with me), so here it is. The

AutoPlus Car of the Year 2014 is the Mercedes C-Class. Once again, we were impressed by its design and function. The use

of new technology, a wide range of willing engines and sublime

driver involvement certainly made us sit up and take notice. So

much so, that we have named it Car of the Year 2014.

Regular servicing

Keeping your car warranted and serviced is a

safeguard against costly repairs down the track.

Regular car maintenance not only improves its

performance, but helps to avoid breakdowns and

having your car off the road while it is being repaired.

Summer's coming

With the holiday season imminent, Marty advises car

owners to make sure their vehicles are ready for

warmer conditions with a service check-up; especially

tyres, brakes and cooling systems. Volkspower also

has the latest in air conditioning servicing at very

reasonable cost to keep your air con' effective for

holiday travelling. A combined service and warrant of

fitness means you can get it all done at once and your

car is in the garage for a short time. Volkspower also

imports, sources and stocks a large and varied range

of late model new and second-hand spare parts at

reasonable prices.

Technical know-how

TO RIDE A HARLEY-

DAVIDSON IS TO

ENJOY A SENSE OF

FREEDOM AND

ADVENTURE, A BREAK

FROM THE ROUTINE

OF EVERYDAY LIFE.

By Rachel Smith

“We're not selling a motorcycle or a T-shirt – we're selling a lifestyle,” says Chris Elles.

To ride a Harley-Davidson is to enjoy a

sense of freedom and adventure, a break

from the routine of everyday life, and the

opportunity to see the beauty of New Zealand

from the road.

At Rolling Thunder, the only authorised Harley-

Davidson dealer for this part of the South Island

and current Harley-Davidson Dealer of the Year,

they offer every product and service a new or

experienced Harley owner is after.

“There is a huge Harley-Davidson community,”

says Chris with a growing number of women both

riding Harleys and wearing their genuine Harley-

Davidson clothing.

For women looking for a bike, there is plenty of

advice from women riders themselves, with Chris

saying that Harley-Davidson has put a lot of effort

into producing bikes which are ergonomically

designed for those of a shorter stature.

Women riders across the South Island are also

welcomed at their regular Ladies' Night, which

has been bringing women Harley fans together

for the past nine years.

Rolling Thunder sell both new and pre-owned

bikes, and their first-hand knowledge as Harley-

they offer the best advice when it comes to

customising your ride.

“We have a massive selection of parts and

merchandise – anything with the Bar & Shield on

it,” says Chris.

Rolling Thunder's online store, 1903.co.nz, has

a full range of men's and women's clothing, made

for style and comfort both on and off the road, as

well as genuine products for your bike, all

freighted free of charge within New Zealand.

If you don't have your own Harley, be it locals or

tourists, rentals are available from Rolling Thunder.

For those without a full motorbike licence, there

are chauffeured rides as a pillion passenger for

individuals or corporate groups, enabling a taste

of what riding a Harley is all about. A brand new

NZ Learner Legal Model Harley-Davidson, the

Street 500, will be arriving around Christmas.
