Think about it…

Angela Bennett

Metropol circulation

It sneaks up on you when you least expect it, like a toothache, a speed camera fine, or the surprise you get when you try on your summer jeans. Except it is much, much nicer.

Spring is stealthlike. One day you are driving to work and the colours are earthy and dark, next day fluro-yellow is ubiquitous, it is flamboyant and bold, shouting at you from the roadside and gardens. One day the trees are bare and brown, and the next branches have exploded in a verdant popcorn surprise. And it keeps on giving… boisterous blossom, spring lambs, asparagus, love, sandals, bare legs it's like an avalanche of 'springness' – an unstoppable force of optimism and new life. Instead of shaking our heads at spring and asking “Where has the year gone?” we smile at everyone, feel younger, step lightly, breathe deeper and feel renewed. Spring is a frenetic time – there're flowers and honey bees and baby animals jumping for the sheer joy of life, and rampant growth. Nature is working overtime to get everything up and running in spectacular style before summer nudges in from the side-lines with its promise of lazy days.Emerging from winter, this unruly season can jolt. It takes a moment to shake the 'hunkering down' of winter from our souls. But to motivate us into embracing this energetic vibe, some of our city's hottest spots are putting on events that will lure us from hibernation. The Colombo's Food. Fashion. Design event is first off the blocks and a highlight on the calendar. Then, close on its heels is a whole week of beauty, fashion and style to enjoy with the first ever Ballantynes Fashion Week. With daily themes, designers, runway shows, shoes and champagne there is something for absolutely everyone to get involved in and enjoy. As you flick through this issue enjoy the transition into the new season, the pastel shades, chic blues and the crispness of white. But above all let the new season inspire you and reenergise you into being the most spirited version of you.

In April this year you took over The

Little Bistro in Akaroa what inspired

your decision?

We've always loved visiting Akaroa; the wife and I are both keen on diving. Having grown up in a small village and The Little Bistro coming on the market, it seemed like a good opportunity to escape the city. We had heard great reports on the restaurant so to own it, work in it and live in Akaroa is living the dream.

You have undertaken a number of roles

in the hospitality industry the last being

Food & Beverage Manager at Rydges –

what aspect of the industry do you

enjoy most?

Hospitality is a fantastic industry, the social aspect is a big draw, but my biggest enjoyment is sourcing new products and ingredients.

How are you enjoying putting on your

chef's whites again?

It's been a long time since I was behind the stove, and to be honest I needed to buy bigger chef's jackets. It's been a steep learning curve, I was pretty rusty, but The Little Bistro's head chef Josh Rogal has dragged my skill level back up.

You have continued with the ethos of

the previous owners which was to

present local, fresh produce. What local

ingredients are your favourites?

Having such great produce on the doorstep is a great advantage to the restaurant. Akaroa Salmon and Barrys Bay cheese are some of the better known producers that we use, but there is a fantastic group of backyard growers in Akaroa who are constantly bringing in fresh produce.

How would you describe your cuisine

style?

I've always been a fan of classical French cuisine, head chef at the bistro Josh Rogal is a little more contemporary, we've adopted a style of 'bistronomy' which is really working well.

How has your menu evolved since

taking over the restaurant?

A big part of our menu evolution is the local produce, at this time of year we are

Restaurateur Richard Uttley has plied his trade in food and hospitality in some

beautiful spots around the world. Hailing from Cumbria's Lake District in the UK he worked in numerous renowned restaurants including the Michelin-starred Box Tree in Ilkley. He came to Christchurch six years ago and many will remember him from Tiffany's, King of Snake and Bloody Mary's in the Rydges. Now Richard has once again found a beautiful restaurant in a magical setting – Little Bistro in Akaroa.I caught up with Richard to find out more about his latest move - owning his own restaurant, and getting back to his creative roots in the kitchen…

changing our menu on an almost weekly basis, as we meet more and more local growers and more spring vegetables become available.

What type of things are on the menu at

present?

We have some amazing dishes at the moment, from the traditional escargot a la bourguignonne, snails in a garlic and herb butter, to beef short rib with bone marrow, and truffle bread and butter pudding.

What are your favourite flavour

combinations?

There are some foods that we might think would never go together and somehow, they are delicious. Beetroot and chocolate is one of my favourites.

How important is wine matching for you

and how do you select your wine list?

Having worked at a lot of fine dining restaurants I used to care a lot about matching wine and food. These days I don't get much time to stop and enjoy a good bottle of wine, so my philosophy has changed somewhat. Drink a bottle of wine because you want to enjoy it, not because you're told you should enjoy it. The Bistro wine list is a little different, it's about 50/50 New Zealand to French wines. I spend most of my free time looking for older French wines, and they are all the wines I'd love to drink if I had the time.

What do you love most about being a

chef?

My biggest love is also my biggest hate, reviews. Chefs don't get much praise, but when we read great reviews it makes our day. But reading a poor review makes you question what you could do better. The Little bistro is number 1 on Tripadvisor and is The Lonely Planets top pick for Akaroa restaurants, so that's a driver to keep it there and keep getting better. What are the greatest challenges of being

a chef?

Work life balance is the greatest challenge, luckily I work with my wife, so I actually get to see her. The antisocial hours mean that a lot of chefs spend very little time with their loved ones.

Richard Uttley“If you want to make new friends and enjoy good food, in

an unpretentious setting you've found the right place.”

AQQ&&A

Page 11: Metropol - 10 September 2015

Apart from menu, what other changes

have you made in the restaurant?

We loved the bistro as it was. We made a few little tweaks here and there, guests know there is something different but they're not sure what. We have some pretty funky new lighting and individual salt graters which are a little different.

What type of foodie will enjoy dining at

The Little Bistro?

If you're looking for a quiet romantic night, the bistro probably isn't the place to be. As the name says it's a little bistro, really little. There are no quiet tables. If you want to make new friends and enjoy good food, in an unpretentious setting you've found the right place.

How are you enjoying living and working

in Akaroa?

It's relaxing. It's been too cold to get out on the water yet, but I spend most mornings gardening, and walking the dog.

Do you get back to the UK to see family

very often?

We went back last year, it was the first time in six years, and nothing had really changed. The family come to New Zealand every year, so I can't really escape them.

What hobbies/ pastimes do you enjoy?

I never thought I'd say this but I'm loving gardening. The wife won't let me start renovating the house until next year so I've been relegated to working on the garden. I also spend a lot of time reading, usually a couple of books a week.

What music are you enjoying at present?

When we moved I found my old iPod which hasn't been updated for a very long time. I'm currently listening to old school hip hop.

What type of music do you play in the

restaurant?

Chillout, soft jazz, and lots of Miles Davis.

What is your proudest achievement?

The day I got married! I'm still not sure why Eiko said yes, she puts up with a lot.

If you could go back and tell your teenage self

something what would it be?

There wouldn't be much point, I wouldn't listen anyway! I thought I knew everything as a teenager.

What is your favourite drink?

I enjoy a good bottle of Pinot Noir, but Elijah Craig 21-Year-Old Single Barrel Bourbon is my drink of choice.

What one book would you

recommend everyone read?

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, everyone should own a copy and read it at least twice.“The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.” Is one of my favourite quotes.

What were you doing

the last time the

thought went through

your mind, “I shouldn't

be doing this”?

I was bidding on a bottle of Dom Pérignon 1978 Champagne. I was pretty keen to own it. But the bidding was getting out of hand, I didn't end up winning it.

What is one thing Metropol

readers would be surprised to

know about you?

I love chicken nuggets and mayo, they are my comfort food.

What do you love to do on a Sunday

afternoon?

Sundays are family day, we take our puppy walking and stop for a lazy lunch somewhere.

What are you like at parties?

I'm the guy that doesn't shut up and should have gone home about three hours ago.

What is next on your wish list?

We all wish for more than we currently have. Personally I'm happy and couldn't wish for more.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON MUSIC AND CANAPÉS Holly Lea Village residents recently enjoyed an afternoon of music and canapés as the University

Christchurch photographer Sabin Holloway's Deep Water exhibition attracted much attention at The Tannery recently. The large-scale prints were of photos he took from inside the red-zone, when he was contracted by a city business owner to photograph their building’s damage. OUT & ABOUT

A golden year for Continental Event HireContinental Event Hire was awarded Gold status in the 2015 Hire Industry Association of New Zealand (HIANZ) awards with the highest combined judging score received since the awards began. This is the first year HIANZ has awarded Gold Status.Judging is on a number of criteria, including presentation, equipment, customer service, health and safety and emergency management. The judges commented about Continental: “The company has entered these awards many times over recent years. It has been absolutely amazing to witness the growth of the business and even more so, the people in it.” New Cuisine Head at Continental Simo Abbari has recently been appointed as Executive Chef. Highly regarded amongst foodies in Canterbury and further afield, especially for his signature award-winning Restaurant Simo's at the Crowne Plaza, Christchurch, Moroccan-born Simo brings a wealth of international cuisine and management experience to the Continental team. As Executive Chef Simo will be overseeing the direction of all Continental's food based activities. He will also offer cooking classes from Continental's main premises

at Kingsford Smith Drive, Southbrook. Gluten-free and allergy-free products availablePrevious arguments regarding the limitations of gluten-free foods are now unfounded with Continental's allergy-free food range, such as pizza bases, pastry, quiches, lamingtons, profiteroles and gateau. Produced from the Alff (NZ) Ltd production kitchen this exciting range of gluten-free and allergy-free products is available online at www.alff.co.nz. Another step forward in the Christchurch rebuild In early August the temporary production kitchen marquee hired by College House at Canterbury University, was dismantled. It had been up for three and a half years longer than the original estimate of 12 months – the longest private hire of a marquee in Continental's history. “Prior to the earthquake a hire of four weeks was considered long term,” says Hires Manager Andy Youngman. The eventual actual hire of four years and five months might be something of a record.” Whether you need a marquee for an event, a caterer for your building opening, gala dinner, or wedding, or the company Christmas party, visit www.continental.co.nz or call the team on 0800 426 684. HANMER SPRINGS

Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa has unveiled a new plan to create New Zealand's first true European-style luxury day spa in the village.

$15M LUXURY SPA PLANS

The pools' management team hopes to build Chisholm Spa in the Chisholm Ward of Queen Mary Hospital – a heritage building with a category one listing that has

been unused since the hospital closed in 2003.General Manager Graeme Abbot says the development

would be a major tourism drawcard for Hurunui and Hanmer Springs.

“There is nothing else like this in the country. The plan for Chisholm Spa is for a luxurious retreat involving indoor and outdoor pools, a hammam (steam room) and an ice cave. It will also have treatment rooms, an eaterie and a retail boutique.”

“There is nothing else

like this in the country.”

“This would be the largest one-off tourism investment ever made in the Hurunui and will help attract both domestic and international visitors. Globally the wellness tourism industry was valued at $494 billion in 2013. Chisholm Spa will help us earn a greater slice of that.”

Graeme Abbot says a $15 million investment is required to create the spa and the pools will be looking for a joint venture investor to make that happen.

“But before we start that process, we are keen to hear what the Hurunui community thinks about the plan.”

Two public meetings have been held. Feedback can also be given via [email protected].

A SPECIAL EVENING WITH NEIL FINNA solo performance by Neil Finn is a rare experience; add to that the intimacy of the Isaac

Theatre Royal and this show is certain to create long lasting, treasured memories…

“A soaring,

spellbinding performance

by one of the greats.”

Following solo concerts in Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Wellington, fans in Christchurch

will now have the opportunity to attend an intimate and very special performance at the Isaac Theatre Royal on Wednesday October 14.

The set-list will range right across Finn's extensive repertoire as he dips in and out of a vast catalogue that spans compositions he's made famous with Split Enz, Crowded House, The Finn Brothers and through the course of his three solo albums, playing a mix of acoustic and electric, guitar and piano, as well as being joined on some songs by a full string section, arranged by renowned Kiwi composer, Victoria Kelly.

Finn said, “I find playing solo to be a very free environment where I'm able to explore strange tangents, reinvent old songs, reminisce with friends and lampoon at will. I love it.”

The chance to see Finn perform solo certainly doesn't come around very often. Performing in Melbourne and Sydney earlier this year, media were universally fulsome in their reviews:

“The man can bloom from whisper to a wail with the same confidence and clarity as on any recording from his early days… A soaring, spellbinding performance by one of the greats.” Brag

“Seeing Finn live is like a comforting

hug when you need it most.” The Music“It's an uncanny performance affirming

Finn's stature as one of pop's greatest songwriters, mixed with a levelled Kiwi cheek. There was no reason for tonight to happen, no particular ceremony. That's what made it so special.” Beat Magazine

The Christchurch show will be Neil Finn's last solo performance in New Zealand for the remainder of this year.

This much loved, iconic store is once again first to grant one of the things on our city's

Marketing Manager Sally Willis says Ballantynes felt it was the right time to celebrate with the community all things Ballantynes has loved for generations… “style, fashion and beauty”.

“We wanted to create a week which heroes spring in a way that's never been done here before. Our customers give us amazing support so we have created a week of incredible entertainment that everyone can enjoy. It's our way of saying thank you!”

Leading designers will be in-store to celebrate, including Trelise Cooper, Paula Ryan, Karen Walker, Kathryn Wilson, Deadly Ponies, Huffer, Marc (from Camilla and Marc),

G Star and Lonely. Sally says the designers will be sharing their inspiration and Huffer might even show us their DJ moves!

Each day of Fashion Week will be very different. “Opening night will be a floral spectacle and our stylists have put some great looks together to celebrate different occasions from a day at the beach to your Cup Day looks. The Mums and Bubs day is too cute for words. A spa pedicure in their new spa massage chairs is a great way to start. The spa pedicure takes a

standard pedicure to the next level - the half hour treatment includes shaping nails and tidying up cuticles and heels, as well as a generous lower leg massage and expertly painted nails.

Shellac gel polish is a favourite finish to the spa pedicure, quite simply because it looks great for longer and dries very quickly.

Their new range of sparkle, jelly and cheese gel polishes, offers texture and colours for nails. Sparkle has a new

thicker look, while jelly offers a uniquely translucent and shiny jelly finish. Cheese gel polish adds bright specks of colour with a light base, for something a little more fun.

Jelly gel is also a key component of the nail art offered at e-nails. They create nail art on request, often based on a picture that their clients have seen, or they can create a customised design. For a perfect look they recommend using nail art stickers, or adding small touches with blue shell pieces, or diamonds surrounded by delicate silver balls set in a jelly gel polish.

Over the coming months they will be adding more colours to their selection, including the popular Vinylux coloured top coats which make great nails last even longer.

They also offer gift vouchers for specific treatments or a set value, the perfect gift of a little decadence.

E-nails are open from 9am – 5.30pm daily, late night Thursday until 7pm, and extended hours on request. To make sure you don't have to wait for your expert nail care, give Catee and the team at e-nails a call on (03) 355 2863, to book your appointment.

New Zealand Fashion Week has just been and gone and it's got everyone yearning to perfect their personal style. Thankfully, we live in an age where

the gap between exclusive and attainable fashions has become bridged.

Designer labels for a dime By Lydia Truesdale

Recycle Boutique is famously popular within NZ as providers of quality pre-owned fashions. Many

top brands have come through the doors of their Christchurch location at retail emporium The Tannery, some of which include Alexander Wang, Sass & Bide, World and Zambesi.

From 7am until 9pm they are busy processing stock – 100 items being put out each day, to be exact. Owner Hayley credits the team of staff for bringing a unique mixture of skills to the table, from style advice out front to behind-the-scenes logistics to provide customers with the very best of what comes in.

Right now there is global demand for American vintage. In store you'll find imported '90s Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and other iconic vintage items like dungarees, knitwear and polos sitting alongside the ever-popular brands that come through on a daily basis, namely Witchery, Nike, Country Road and more.

Recycle's reputation is stellar and they are understandably strict on the items they accept. Every piece is steam-

cleaned before hitting the shelf, and if there are any marks or damage then pieces are either collected by the owner or passed on to the City Mission with the owner's permission when they deliver the weekly vanload of donations.

Recycle Boutique is now doing late night Thursdays until 7:30pm.

Black, a new design direction for The Stretton Group, represents a

marked difference from the drama, colour and frippery for which they have become known over the last 23 years.

This polar opposite effect is intentional and helps to ensure that absolute design integrity is kept between the two labels; Black and the re-labelled Pink range.

Black is simplistic, streamlined, and fashion forward, with just a hint of understated sophistication.

The launch of Black also marks the beginning of a design collaboration between Annah Stretton and her daughter Sam, and explains the reason for the title given to the collection – Good Chemistry.

The collection's beautiful, soft colour palette and simple, clean style blocks allow lots of room for the wearer to stamp their own mark on the clothing. The fabric selection and timeless shapes also talk to the new direction in style for the label.

In New Zealand, nearly one in five people have been diagnosed with some form of breathing difficulty. It can be triggered by a range of different stimulants, with some of the obvious ones being sudden change of temperature from hot to cold, animal dander, pollen, food allergies, mould, dust, exposure to smoke, chemicals and sprays, and dehydration. With stress playing a large part in most people's lives today, it is a double-edged sword, especially when stress overwhelms to the point where restricted breathing occurs.

When detoxification happens via the lungs, histamine release will cause the

formation of mucous, which begins to block the bronchial tubes and constricted breathing occurs.

HealthZone Lung Zone can give much-needed relief from these experiences, bringing calm back to the body. Lung Zone is effective in relaxing skeletal muscles and the smooth muscles of the blood vessels and bronchial tree. It supports the body's natural detoxification and elimination pathways, carbon dioxide exchange, healthy breathing, bronchial relaxation and clear airways.

Efficient gas exchange is not only beneficial to people with breathing difficulties, but also to those who need aerobic capacity such as athletes, or muscle energy production in low oxygen conditions. It is also beneficial for people with longstanding lung issues. Many athletes have found taking Lung Zone not only supports the ability to breathe easy, but also improves their muscular performance, stamina and aerobic activity.Aikmans Road, Merivale Phone 355 4228

A uniquely Italian approach, the light construction is reflective of the current trend towards a softer

and relaxed silhouette in men's fashion. “The different use of textures

accentuates the beauty of the collection,” says Working Style creative director Eddie von Dadelszen.

“Breathable linens, cottons and merino wools are luxuriously light but tough and made to travel with you wherever life takes you.”

A modicum of stretch keeps cotton chinos narrow but comfortable, while fine Canclini cotton from Italy and softer collars provide summer's best shirts – with or without a tie.

Working Style's new European summer jackets are the ultimate expression of casualised cool. The fit is slim, structure is light and soft.

KIDSZONE

Recently the Hyundai Power Off/Family On campaign encouraged families to switch off and spend time together. Clinical Psychologist Nigel Latta, an ambassador the Hyundai Power Off/Family On campaign, says parents need to reduce their own and their children's screen time to form closer family relationships.

The single most important thing we give our kids is our time. That's where we teach them all the skills

they'll need to navigate life, and where we build our relationship with them. The pressures of the modern world are bad enough at eating into your time with your kids, but screens are a whole other layer of stuff trying to steal time from us.

“Sitting in a room with the kids while everyone is watching different screens isn't

Top tips for parenting: Screen timespending time together, and it isn't building a relationship, it's just taking up space on the couch. You need to make sure you all have time unplugged and engaged in each other's lives. That's where the important conversations happen.

“You can do far more good in your children's lives during a walk, than you can returning emails on your phone while they shoot zombies on the games console. There is just no better way to build your kids up than the simple act of spending time together in the actual world doing actual things.”

Latta says there are five key steps parents need to take if they are concerned about the amount of screen time in their children's everyday lives: 1. The most important thing is to lead by example. Make sure that you aren't looking at screens all the time. Set limits on your own use first.

2. Decide exactly what kind of devices people actually need and when they need them. You probably don't need a mobile phone when you're nine, for example. You also don't need every kind of device there is in the world.3. Set limits for everyone about where devices can be used, such as:- No devices at the dinner table- No devices at cafes- No devices at Grandma's house- No looking at a screen during an actual conversation with an actual person- No devices after a set time each night.4. Make their offline life as interesting as you can by encouraging them to get involved in real world activities as well.5. Have regular 'device free' days or evenings where the family does something together that doesn't involve screen time. For more information on the Hyundai Power Off/Family On initiative, visit www.poweroff.co.nz

October will mark two years since Marmalade first opened its doors. Owner Jessica

Fearnley-Campbell describes the town as the perfect location with its delightful mixture of offerings that make for a pleasant outing – three cafes and a wine bar, eight boutique stores, a museum and an art gallery.

The variety of stores to peruse is the icing on the cake. Marmalade has become well-known for its vivacious fashions made from premium fabrics

Jessica is excited about all the new spring stock arriving daily. Her passion for natural-fibre, NZ made and fair trade brands encourages an exclusive range of garments. Captivating aesthetics this season come in the form of unique prints that take inspiration from Asian adventures.

Featuring strongly are pretty mosaics, ethnic tile graphics, little birds and bright tropical blooms in hues of delicate teal, easy-to-wear indigo, chambray, burgundy and dusty pinks. These work as “the perfect canvas for fresh new beginnings and the brighter spring days ahead,” says Jess.

After more than two years closed due to earthquake damage, Kaiapoi Club's much-loved Riverview Restaurant is back. With an emphasis on quality food and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, with the same reasonable prices, a visit to the new-look Riverview Restaurant won't disappoint.

For those familiar with the old restaurant, the section that went across the road has been

removed. However, the reduced capacity just means even better food and service and more attention to detail. The restaurant still seats up to 90 diners and, with the convenience of the adjacent areas, events up to 300 can be catered for.

Riverview Restaurant is open Fridays and Saturdays from 5.30pm and Sundays from 5pm. So when the weekend comes around, put away your

POPULAR RESTAURANT REOPENS

recipe books and head down to the Kaiapoi Club for a four course buffet for just $27.

The buffet includes a delicious soup of the day and a selection of entrees, including fish goujons, samosas and wontons, and beef, chicken and rice options. Next is the carvery, where you'll find a choice of four succulent meats: ham, beef, pork and chicken. The veggie bar offers seasonal vegetables, fries and potatoes, and the salad bar features six

freshly made salads.Hopefully, you'll still have room for

dessert because the impressive dessert bar is no small affair: fruit salad, trifle, a hot dessert, mousse, chocolate log, jelly, cream and ice cream. All this is followed by tea and coffee to finish.

The huge variety of food makes the Riverview Restaurant the perfect option for family dining. Highchairs are available and, if you dine between 5.30 and 6.30pm on Friday or Saturday, you'll only pay $24.90, with children paying even less. That leaves plenty of time to get everyone home, bathed and into bed before the wheels fall off.

Your hosts at Riverview Restaurant are Steve and Bev Palaamo, who have been catering for over 20 years including time at the Richmond WMC and Rangiora RSA. Bev welcomes every guest like family.

Bookings recommended. Phone (03) 327 7884, email [email protected] or visit www.kaiapoiclub.co.nz. Kaiapoi Club membership costs just $30 per year.

NORTH CANTERBURY

Earlier this year Trudy Brakey founded The Housekeeping Genie – an affordable yet highly professional cleaning service for those situated in North Canterbury. Is there any better time to ask for a helping hand than the beginning of spring? The Housekeeping Genie think not!

GENIES

Spring is a great time for clients to get their windows and interiors cleaned and let the sunshine sparkle through,” says

Trudy. “There's nothing worse than dirty windows

when we are having such gorgeous days.” Between Trudy and her five colleagues there is

no space that can't be beautified. With over 13 years of experience in commercial cleaning and five years in domestic cleaning Trudy offers valuable guidance to her team, and coupled with their attention to detail they produce a high end result. Clients find comfort in the fact their professionalism extends to being insured and paying GST.

As well as preparing homes for the excess of activities that come with the warmer weather they are available for a range of other cleaning: builders' cleans, commercial cleans, rental cleans, estate cleans, preparing homes for going on the market, car cleans, before and after party cleans – they can even go as far as to help hosts by greeting guests, circulating food and clearing plates and glasses.

The Housekeeping Genie truly understand the importance of presenting each and every space to be inviting and comfortable, as well as the fact clients want the highest level of professionalism when it comes to their personal and commercial abodes. To book a Genie phone 027 214 3790.

As owner and head artist at NZ Ink Tattoo Studio, Steve gets to indulge his passion every day and takes great pride in seeing his

customers' joy with their new ink. He is an accomplished freehand artist and, as part

of the free consultation process, Steve draws on skin with a pen before tattooing so customers can see what the finished product will look like.

As well as being a qualified artist, Steve has 15 years' experience in the tattoo industry, which is hugely important given that the industry is not regulated in New Zealand.

“Professional tattooists start with an apprenticeship and learn that way. Sometimes it can take over a year before they even get to put ink on skin.”

Steve Purtle is passionate about art. He paints, he draws and he tattoos. Tell Steve a story or just tell him what you love and he will

come up with a design that you can keep forever and wear with pride.

As well as being a qualified artist,

Steve has 15 years' experience in the tattoo industry.

Equally involved in the business is Steve's partner Trudi McKay, who always offers a warm welcome to customers and visitors alike.

“Our studio is warm, clean and inviting,” Trudi says. “It's really important to us that our customers feel comfortable. Getting a tattoo can be quite an intimate experience and we want people to feel at ease with their tattooist and the surroundings.”

Jacqui van den Berg

Jacqui is passionate about nature. From a very early age she drew animals and horses and says, “this was more my early language rather than writing or speaking. I have grown to have a deep respect and understanding of nature and enjoy sharing what I see and feel on the canvas through paint.”Jess Skepper

Jess grew up in Christchurch, with “good trout streams a short cast away, and the Southern Alps on my doorstep”. His first job was as a surveyor at Mt. Cook. The surrounding mountains held the elusive Himalayan tahr. Chasing these magnificent creatures, led him to an interest in wildlife photography. “I first picked up a brush in 2000, and so began an addiction!” Josephine Regan

This exhibition with Eco Artists is my first in Christchurch and I am thrilled to be included. I have been working with bone china casting slip for a couple of years now, as the material is stunningly white, and can be cast exceptionally thin and translucent.

CANTERBURY BRIDE

Chenca Williams the head designer of Ritva Westenius oozes flamboyancy, theatricality and movement prevailing

from her 25 years as a principal ballerina at The Royal Ballet. This translates into her latest 2016 collection where Chenca reasserts the parallel between her two different artistic licenses, both that accentuate and beautify the human form- bridal and ballet.

The Ritva Westenius 2016 catwalk show is a bow to Ritva Westenius herself. Presenting the everlasting graceful and simple designs reincarnated with a contemporary refreshing twist.

Ritva Westenius synonymous with the terms cut, simplicity and elegance has been sculpting, designing and creating haute couture wedding dresses in London since 1977.

for 2016

The Pas de Deux Collection is a nod to Chenca's past life, each dress is named after a ballerina- Margot Fonteyn, Sylvie Guillem, Natalia Osipova, Tamara Roja and Antoinette Syblev.

Versatility is key, thus several themes are presented… Ÿ Sensual silk satins with handmade

tulle ribbon, flattering in the right places - for the modern bride.

Ÿ Flirty open silk shirts, with a lace skirt. Ÿ Billowing printed Kimonos that push

the boundaries between high fashion and bridal are used as a statement instead of a traditional veil and capture the theatricality of fluidity.

Ÿ For the elegant bride, Italian crepe gowns that are figure embracing and silhouette emphasising. These feature lower back-lines with hand

embroidery. Ÿ Then there is the juxtaposition of

flamboyancy: bigger A-line gowns that are made to pirouette, either in box pleats or organza petals that envelop the wearer.

As a chef I like to be prepared, so it's with trepidation that I check the cupboard for a spare Christmas pudding, left over from last year for this year's celebrations. With great relief I spot the pudding beautifully wrapped in a cotton cloth. For those of you who like to get on top of Christmas early, I include my favourite recipe…

Ingredients:

450g each of currents, raisins, fresh bread crumbs and butter (melted)8 eggs (beaten)30g or 4 1/2 T flour115g peel1 t allspice450g brown sugarRind of a lemon,1 wine glass of brandy

Combine all ingredients, except eggs and butter. Add well beaten eggs and melted butter, mix. Place into pudding bowls lined with cling film, cover. Then steam for 6 hours, steam 2 more hours before serving.Makes 3 puddings.

The new spring menu has some particularly

mouth-watering delights.

Whatever the occasion you can be sure of exceedingly good food at No 4 Bar. They are renowned for their generous and varied platters and the new spring menu has some particularly mouth-watering delights. Feedback has been positive, to say the least, with the wild venison dish being a favourite and the lamb shoulder another dish going down a storm with the guests. Food that simply puts a smile on your face!

No 4 Bar is proud of its reputation as a premium establishment and the venue knows that evolving and developing new ideas and dishes is vital to keep guests returning.

No 4 Bar is well-known for going “all out” for Cup Week, especially on the Tuesday - Trotting Cup Day. The team says this is

FLAVOUR to the fore

By Cheryl Colley

Rocksalt in Elmwood Village is one of my favourite eating places. Their blue cheese, rosemary and red grape flat bread has to be tasted to be believed. It is just so good. But Rocksalt has

many other delights to tempt people with a passion for great food and coffee…

Rocksalt has many delights to

tempt people with a passion

for great food and coffee…

Speaking of coffee, Rocksalt is one of only a few Christchurch cafes that serve Allpress coffee sourced from

that company's Dunedin roastery. Allpress coffee is all about aroma, flavour and taste. This smooth, rich dark coffee is made from top grade Arabica beans, using innovative roasting technology ensuring consistent great quality.

There's quality too in Rocksalt's pizza menu. They are renowned for their crisp hand-made pizza bases and innovative toppings. Choose from chorizo, salami, ham, bbq sauce and sour cream, or prawns, chilli, pineapple, roast capsicum and basil, or mushroom, sundried tomato, red onion and basil pesto. The combinations are sometimes surprising, and always delicious,

with new flavours being introduced regularly. Gluten-free pizzas are available, as is a takeaway option.

New too, very soon, will be the full summer menu. The team tells me they are thinking of lots of new ideas – you might see venison and duck leg on the menu – but you can be sure there will be many treats.

Don't forget Rocksalt's Happy Hour either: 4pm – 6pm Tuesday – Saturday. Bottle and tap beer and house wine all only $5.

It may seem far too early to be mentioning it, but Christmas is looming. Now is the time to book functions at Rocksalt before it's too late. Call the restaurant on (03) 355 5299 or email [email protected] to make arrangements.

100 NZ HOMES COMPETINGOne hundred of the best homes in New Zealand, 23 of which are from Canterbury, have been named as Gold Reserve Finalists in the country's premier residential building awards, the Registered Master Builders 2015 House of the Year.

Registered Master Builder's Chief Executive David Kelly says there's real diversity among the

finalists this year. “There's an English style country home

with grand stature, a 1970s beachfront bach that's been given a new lease of life, and homes made of the most sustainable materials available. There are homes that exude wow factor, and others whose excellence is only visible to the trained eye.”

Representing the top entrants in this year's regional competitions held in July and August, the Gold Reserve National Finalists will now be re-judged by the national judging panel to find out who will take out the ultimate accolades of the Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year.

Finalists also have the opportunity to win one of the 12 national category awards, as well as separate awards for lifestyle categories such as best kitchen, best bathroom and best outdoor space. There's also an award for the most sustainable home.

EXCELLING IN ARCHITECTURALLY-DESIGNED BUILDSA family tradition of excellence is the hallmark of Frost Builders' residential construction. In August this father and son partnership of Garry and Mitch Frost won Gold in the 2015 Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. That's great in itself - but what is even more impressive is that they have won at least a Gold every year they have entered a house since 2004 when they first entered the competition.

“We are absolutely

delighted and very proud

to have won Gold again.”

We are absolutely delighted and very proud to have won Gold again,” says Mitch

Frost. “In total now that makes eight Gold awards, two regional Gold Reserve awards, one regional category winner and one national Gold Reserve in the past twelve years.”

Indeed this does speak volumes about the consistency of quality that is of paramount importance to Frost Builders.

“It is especially satisfying to be judged by your peers in the building industry and to be seen to excel in the complex architecturally-designed houses that we specialise in.”

The home in Merivale for which Frost Builders won this year's Gold in the Carters New Home $1 million - $2 million category was a challenging project. Mitch refers to it as a real “craftsman's house” because it has so many timber features. It's cedar clad, has timber joinery and

French oak timber floors throughout, as well as timber window frames and kwila sills and even laminated cedar capping on the parapets.

“Precision and exactness were called for throughout the thirteen months of construction. We couldn't be happier with the final result. It is a beautiful house with a lovely orientation overlooking the river to Hagley Park.”

Frost Builders can be contacted on either 021 334 910 (Garry) or 021 376 784 (Mitch). Fax (03) 331 7189. Email [email protected]. Website www.frostandson.co.nz.

Bowers Builders (2006) Ltd is highly experienced in house-levelling and foundation repairs

specialising in TC3 land, but it's far from the only area of expertise for this innovative local firm, whether you're renovating, extending, modernising or even building new.

The company can take care of everything from resource consent through to painting and, with recent earthquake repairs ranging from $200 to $600,000, no job is too big or too small.

FOUNDATIONS: THE HEART OF THE MATTERYou might be a savvy investor looking to snap up one of the many 'as is

where is' properties flooding the local market; you may have taken a cash settlement and are self-managing your repairs; or you may simply be

renovating to get the best dollar for your property. Whatever your renovation needs, foundations are at the heart of a safe home.

A recent nine-month earthquake repair saw the company engaged from start to finish. The house was rolled across the section to allow for new TC3 foundations and the interior was completely gutted and refurbished.

A family owned business, Bowers Builders (2006) Ltd has been operating for more than 40 years and is owned and operated by husband and wife team, quantity surveyor Amanda and Licensed Building Practitioner with Site 2 Johnnie Bowers.

The couple are supported by office administrator Amber, tradesmen Jeff and Greg, their son Alex who is working through his apprenticeship and a painting crew of three.

Bowers Builders (2006) Ltd prides itself on communication and keeping clients in the picture with what is happening with their repairs, Amanda Bowers says.

“Once we've started, we want the most stressful part for the client to be deciding on the paint colour.”

For more information phone Bowers Builders (2006) Ltd on 027 248 0220, after hours on (03) 338 5544 or visit www.bowersbuildersltd.co.nz.

The end of winter and the start of spring is the beginning of the growing season and when work in

the garden really determines results for the coming growing season. The old saying, “well begun is half done” can be applied to the garden, so start the season off properly by doing the right tasks at the right time…

FLOWER GARDEN

Feed daffodils and other spring bulbs with a dressing of potash fertiliser to encourage strong stems and next year's flowers.

With Michael Coulter, Canterbury Horticultural Society Spring flowering shrubs must be pruned

as soon as they have finished flowering so that they will have plenty of new growth to give next spring's flowers.Dead head plants and bulbs as the flowers finish and look out for aphids. Spray if needed to keep the plants healthy.Give roses and other shrubs that have been in the ground for a while a good side dressing of a suitable fertiliser to encourage new growth and flowers.Treat any perennial weeds as they begin to grow and before they get too big, among the shrubs, with spot treatments like Roundup gel.Once the ground is weed-free mulches

spread around the border will help to control weeds and also conserve water later in the summer.LAWNS

Lawns need to be invigorated after the cold of winter by feeding with a good balanced lawn fertiliser.Once the grass has started to grow give the lawn a rake and then top dress with soil and seed if needed.Treat lawns for moss and aerate with a fork or coring to help stop the moss growing back. The grass should not be cut too low at this time of the year. For more information go to www.chsgardens.co.nz

The company, based just before the Waimakiriri bridge along the northern end of the city, provides

a wide range of joinery services, including aluminium windows, doors and hardware, with architecture series windows and doors and thermally broken windows and doors increasing in popularity due to their thermal efficiency.

The right joinery is necessary, not just to look great, but also to cope with New Zealand's demanding climate. Kaiapoi Aluminium Joinery has an impressive line-up of aluminium doors and windows to suit your needs, whether you're upgrading existing joinery or building a new home.

Taking double glazing a step further, the popularity of thermally broken aluminium is rising. “Our customers see this as an investment rather than a cost,

that's a sensible way to look at building your home,” co-owner Ali Hamblin explains.

“People are looking to invest in the ultimate in warmth and dryness in their homes and they understand the long term cost savings of a warmer house.”

What does thermally broken mean?Traditional aluminium window framing

is highly conductive and subsequently a very poor insulator. Thermally broken

windows have been manufactured with a barrier in between the inside and outside window frames which prevents the conductive thermal energy loss, lowering condensation and heat transfer.

“We're a family owned business, so we take everything personally and we provide a damn good service because of that,” Ali says. “We pride ourselves on our service, and we back up that service with a really high quality product.”

FFor many Cantabrians, the repair or rebuild of their home has not been a seamless process.

Wrangling with EQC, Insurers and building companies has tested their patience and created additional stress in already busy lives. Craig Kennedy of Kennedy & Co has been working with many impacted families as a Loss Adjuster and Case Manager for the past four years, he took time out to discuss his experiences with helping Canterbury communities rebuild.

“We speak to people from every walk of life and at many stages of the rebuild or repair process. However many of them have a similar story,” says Craig.

“They have lost faith in the system, are tired of the whole process and ultimately just want someone to take the stress away. And that is essentially the service we offer. We are earthquake settlement, repair and rebuild specialists. We make

sure people get treated fairly, get the right deal and get the end result they deserve – a home free of earthquake damage.”

Kennedy & Co go beyond building brokerage and standard project management, says Craig. “We loss assess and mediate, cash settle, project manage and repair and rebuild. In our experience the most important thing to get right is to ensure the scope of works and the cost estimate to repair or rebuild is accurate, as well as making sure you have the right person for the job, and that's where we can really add value.”

“For example you need to select the most reliable trade's people. If you get this wrong you could end up with shoddy workmanship and incorrect timelines.

“We have personally vetted all our preferred suppliers – from builders to geo technical/structural engineers, QS services and we have a really strong legal team. As

an example, one of our preferred building providers is Pitch Design and Build. We know that they are going to do the job right – there is no guess work involved,” says Craig.

“We also work with several other highly reputable building companies,” Craig Kennedy says. “We are committed to Canterbury families, getting what they are entitled to and ensuring the price is fair and the process is straight forward and seamless – giving you the control back.”

“It's simple,” says Craig. “We offer peace of mind.”

To innovate is to introduce new ideas or products. That is exactly what Johnson & Couzins have

done with the Concertina Louvre, Australasia's first retractable roof louvre. Three years in the planning, and introduced on to the market just a year ago, this sliding roof not only enables total control of sun, shade and rain, but it practically vanishes at the touch of a button.

Open up the louvre and full daylight and sun flood in; close it and it's fully waterproof and Christchurch easterly-proof. The Concertina Louvre is ideal for outdoor tables in restaurants and bars, for residential outdoor dining areas, for holiday homes and for any areas requiring all-weather protection. This louvre system goes a step further than the ever-popular Silencio Louvre in that rather than just rotating, the louvre fins

nce upon a time Jaguar made a mid-size car. It was called the X-Type and it was crap. It wasn't bad because it was based on the Ford Mondeo – which it was – and neither was it bad because it was FWD – which it also was, although 4WD models were available – rather it was bad because it was a half-baked effort with derivative design and an awful interior. It sold dismally and was quietly dropped, whereupon everyone resolved never to speak of it again. Except for motoring journalists

NEW JAGUAR XE:

WHAT IS IT?

As stated above, the XE is a new mid-size Jaguar, taking on the rapidly diminishing segment that the X-Type failed to even dent.

But there is very good reason to expect things will be different this time around. The first car to be built on Jaguar Land Rover's new modular vehicle architecture, Jaguar claim the XE is capable of taking on the best in the segment as far as dynamics go, and with the current Jaguar design language featuring heavily both

inside and out on the XE, things certainly look good.

The XE initially comes to New Zealand with a choice of four trim levels and three engines.

The Pure, Prestige and R-Sport models come with a choice of either a 147kW/320Nm 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder petrol turbo engine or a 132kW/430Nm 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder diesel turbo, both hooked up to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

By Damien O'CarrollRAZOR SHARPWHAT IS IT LIKE?

The XE can truly stand toe-to-toe dynamically with anything in the segment. It possesses razor sharp and precise turn-in, while also boasting lithe playfulness to the chassis that is quite unlike anything else in the segment.FIRST IMPRESSIONS?

A deeply impressive effort that successfully erases memories of the X-Type, the XE is a car that can truly take on the Germans.

Whether it beats them or not will depend on what you want out of a car.

The XE excels in handling, has a superb ride and is something outside of the obvious in the segment.

It doesn't, however, quite offer the same level of intrinsic quality and excellence as the leaders in the luxury mid-size segment. The BMW 3 Series still offers a more involved driving experience, while the Mercedes C-Class is utterly gorgeous and has a thoroughly magnificent interior and the Audi A4 simply oozes quality and confident elegance.

Still, one thing is certain; Jaguar has never been so startlingly close to the Germans as it is with the XE, even beating them in a few key areas. The fact that it is

NOT German, handles brilliantly and has an exceptional ride will be

more than enough for some people, and rightfully so.

The XE is a thoroughly wonderful car.

The Pure starts off the range at $74,900 for the petrol and $76,900 for the diesel.

The Prestige costs $78,900 for the petrol and $80,900 for the diesel. The R-Sport lands at $79,900 for the petrol and $81,900 for the diesel. The V6-powered S model costs $106,000 and is the sportiest (so far) of the XE variants.

The Touran excelled in the latest round of Euro NCAP tests, thanks to its rst-class safety

package that includes an optimised body structure, highly eective belt, seat and airbag combination and innovative driver assistance systems. The Touran performed strongly in all four key areas: occupant protection for adults and children, pedestrian protection and safety assistance, and highlighted Volkswagen's commitment to occupant and pedestrian safety.

The all-new Volkswagen Touran has been awarded a ve-star rating by independent safety organisation Euro NCAP with an overall score that marks it out as one of the safest and most protective family cars in the industry.

The new family MPV also recorded excellent results in the important child protection sub-section. Thanks to ISOFIX and top tether child seat anchors being tted as standard it achieved over 89 per cent of the available points. In the pedestrian protection category, the Touran was given a total score of 71 per cent with recognition of the Touran's numerous engineering features designed to reduce the risk of injury to passers-by.

Based on Volkswagen's MQB

platform, the new model oers more space, greater practicality and lower running costs than the previous model. Safety equipment includes airbags for driver and front-seat passenger and a head airbag system for front and rear-seat passengers, including side airbags. The new Touran also has systems such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), including ABS with Brake Assist, Automatic Post-Collision Braking, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and Driver Alert on board as standard.
