The Next Evolution In Road Management

As road networks mature and become more

responsive, informative traffic data is at

the core of effective road management.

Empowering decision makers and directing effective

road network improvement has become a central

focus of the MetroCount Traffic Analysis System.

Stakeholders utilise the high degree of detail and

accuracy that the MetroCount systems produce

to gain insight into traffic conditions. From smaller

organisations charged with maintenance on local

roads, to national regulators directing works on

major highways, traffic data is the cornerstone upon

which safe and sustainable transport networks are

built and managed.

Planning and DesigningExecution of road works of any scale must be guided

by a detailed understanding of how the infrastructure

is currently used and the expectation of how it will be

used. Reliable traffic data not only provides the basis

for planning and designing traffic facilities, including

a selection of geometric standards, but also informs

economic analysis, impact assessment and assists the

prioritisation of works.

Traffic Co-ordinationIdentifying areas of concern and potential

improvement guides traffic management practises

to where they are most needed. Traffic data can help

to determine the need for traffic control devices

such as signs, traffic signals, pavement markings and

pedestrian crossings.

Traffic EvaluationAccountability is critical to the integrity and success

of road works conducted. Before-and-After traffic

surveys provide benchmarking to evaluate the

success of projects. Ensuring projects are monitored

and evaluated against standardised guidelines

provides a level of transparency in the process. The

veracity and accuracy of MetroCount traffic data

has been tested around the world. MetroCount’s

stringent data validation processes that ensures the

integrity of MetroCount data have been repeatedly

upheld. These processes ensure that MetroCount

traffic data cannot be manipulated and is faithful to

the actual road conditions.

Adherence to RegulationsRoutinely monitoring vehicle and driver behaviour

provides insight into the statistically normal conditions

of a road. MetroCount software allows for detailed

analysis of every individual vehicle, providing a clear

representation of problematic driver behaviour on a

road including speeding and tailgating.

Speeding patterns can be broken down by vehicle

classification and time, to view how different vehicles

are behaving on the road at certain times of the day,

week, month or year. This detailed information can

be used to optimise education and enforcement

operations in the time and place they are most

effective.

Infrastructure ManagementMonitoring the breakdown of vehicle classes

operating on a road provides useful information for

planning and management. Traffic data is a useful

reference tool when monitoring road performance.

Average traffic volume and class breakdowns inform

planning for maintenance and repair.

Traffic data is the cornerstone upon which safe and sustainable transport networks are managed.

MetroCount Traffic Executive® (MTE){ }Since MetroCount was founded in 1987, the

same team of engineers have been building

the most advanced traffic analysis software

available. One team, 25 years of development.

From humble beginnings, to the multinational

company of today, the development of MetroCount

Traffic Executive has remained customer focused,

implementing feedback from road managers to

deliver useful traffic information.

Worth Doing the Right WayPrior to MetroCount, traffic surveying was often

regarded as an inexact science. But with proven

accuracy above 99%, MetroCount equipment is

now the pinnacle of accuracy in presenting traffic

conditions. With thorough error checking on every

vehicle detection, MTE provides a high degree of

accountability in its interpretation.

Managing Traffic Survey NetworksConsistency is the key to an effective survey

network. MTE incorporates survey management

features to ensure the network is properly covered

with sites routinely monitored. MTE’s Site Lists are

also an invaluable tool to ensure survey personnel

and contractors carry out surveys at the same co-

ordinates with consistent naming conventions.

Filter with ProfilesMTE uses a report Profile system to allow detailed

filtering and reporting of traffic data. Profiles contain

information about the filtering of traffic by class,

time, speed, direction, separation and more. Profiles

can be saved for later use as well as copied and

pasted to consistently compare any data sets.

Automate with Batch ScriptingMTE includes functionality to compile custom batch

scripts. These scripts automate the analysis of

multiple datasets. Compile standardised reports in a

single script and simply run them on all future traffic

surveys for simple, consistent traffic analysis.

Tablet Operation in the FieldField operators can take advantage of small form

factor Windows tablets with a full sized USB port

when operating MTE. Tablets simplify roadside unit

set-up with only a few taps before a unit is running.

MTE is developed to operate on computers running

a Windows operating system.

Backward CompatibilityThe simple principle of post-survey analysis has

allowed MTE to grow around the original file format.

More than 20 years on, the latest version MTE can

analyse data sets created in the 1990’s.

Individual Vehicle DataAccurate individual vehicle information is at the

foundation of all MetroCount reports. MetroCount

engineers pioneered the technology to analyse

every axle post survey in software. Using advanced

proprietary algorithms, MTE provides incredible

detail about every vehicle on the road as shown in

the sample report below containing actual traffic

survey data.

Portable Vehicle Monitoring{ }MetroCount has a long-held global

reputation as the benchmark for accurate

traffic survey technologies. Accurate

traffic data is critical for a clear understanding of road

conditions.

The MC5600 pneumatic tube classifier is one of the

most widely used traffic survey units on the globe and

has been scrutinised by independent scientific studies

since the first version came into production many

years ago. Uptake of the MC5600 has increased in

recent years as traffic engineers make use of the

advanced analytics to improve understanding of road

conditions and guide road works.

Operators and traffic analysts can filter through the

data with an almost infinite combination of reporting

options to extract meaningful road usage details.

Regular portable traffic surveys provide a verifiable

history of road use over time. Regular and consistent

surveys can provide a clear picture of vehicle

movement in an area.

Common use cases include: ▪ Average Daily Traffic (ADT) reports, weekly vehicle

counts.

▪ Hourly vehicle volumes to determine periods of

congestion.

▪ 85th Percentile speed to determine the operating

speed of a road.

▪ Exceeding speed limit statistics by time of day to

target enforcement and education efforts.

▪ Vehicle class breakdown to plan future upgrades

to roads based on loads.

▪ Traffic characteristics related to driver behaviour

such as saturation flow rates and headway.

MetroCount Pneumatic tube counters are widely used around the world.

The driving force behind the widespread uptake of the MC5600 is the simplicity with which operators can

undertake a detailed traffic survey.

Record Every AxleBased on post-survey analysis, the MC5600 stores

every axle that passes over the sensors. Time stamped

axle hits are interpreted to provide a clear picture

of traffic. Axle hits that don’t correlate with a vehicle

travelling in a uniform way over two sensors are

rejected by the software post survey.

Pneumatic Tubes; Reliability and AccuracyDetecting axles using rubber pneumatic tubes is

the most cost-effective temporary traffic sensing

method. Pneumatic tubes are cheap, easy to install

and reliable, and remain accurate under a broad range

of environmental conditions.

Designed For Simple OperationThe MC5600 is operated with MTE for survey set-

up, data unload and diagnostics. The simple design,

robust hardware and proven reliability of our

roadside “black box” have contributed to it becoming

a benchmark in the traffic industry worldwide.

The system incorporates dual-level protection for

maximum durability. A stainless steel road case

houses a weather sealed internal vehicle logger. Units

are built with maintenance free, auto-ranging and self-

calibrating sensors, eliminating the requirement for

regular maintenance.

Easily replaceable alkaline battery packs allow for

continuous surveys of around 290 days.

Assured Data IntegrityMetroCount’s proprietary raw data format is

authenticated with a digital signature ensuring data

cannot be tampered with.

Effective Survey Network Management“Site Lists” can be set up in the MTE software for

effective survey management, with a GPS interface.

LED DiagnosticsDiagnostic LEDs remove complexity and provide

feedback to the operator on the status of the road

side unit. LED lights indicate whether the unit is in

sleep or operational mode.

MC5600 Interface The MC5600 Roadside Unit is set up via the

MetroCount MTE software. Detailed location

information is entered before each survey. GPS data

can be appended to any survey manually or through

an attached Module.

Post-purchase Feature UpgradesThe MC5600 is available in Regular and Plus models,

each offering increasing detail of traffic analysis. This

system allows users to expand their capabilities as

the need arises. An additional Batch feature has been

designed to unlock MTE’s automated data processing

of multiple datasets.

A Clear Picture of Signalised TrafficMonitoring traffic at signal controlled intersections

and level crossings provides critical information

regarding driver behaviour. MetroCount’s MC5712

is a unique approach to collecting detailed traffic data,

synchronised with intersection signal timings. The

MC5712 is based on our industry standard MC5600

with the addition of an optical fibre interface, to detect

and record changing signal phases in parallel with

traffic data.

More than just Crash DataReliance on sparsely available crash data to analyse

driver behaviour at intersections provides no

mechanism to identify potential issues before an

accident occurs. By monitoring all driver behaviour at

a signalised intersection, preventative action can be

taken based on empirical evidence.

Customise Signal Phases In MTEMTE allows users to take advantage of common

MetroCount MC5712 Roadside Unit

signal phases or define their own Phase Maps for

customised interpretation. Common signal phases for

traffic lights are easy to synchronise with the traffic

data, allowing more time to be spent interpreting the

information.

Common Use Examples:Pairing traffic data with traffic signals has a number of

implications in traffic management and enforcement.

• Isolating volume and speed during the amber or

warning phase of traffic lights to assess driver

reaction times and inform signal timing.

• Analysis of driver behaviour at intersections to

direct intersection design and modification.

• Classification of vehicles crossing intersections

during different phases including during the red

light phase to identify potential infringements by

vehicle class.

• Monitor rail crossing volume during the stop

phase of the traffic signals to assess effectiveness

of signals.

“Permanent Vehicle Monitoring{ }Longitudinal traffic studies provide pertinent

information and trends to assist in planning

new road works, upgrades and maintenance

as well as assisting traffic management plans. Year-

on-year data can identify traffic growth patterns and

seasonal road usage trends.

MetroCount permanent survey sites are often

installed on major arterial roads and can be

automated to electronically provide traffic

information via email or the internet to managers at

regular intervals. Permanent sites provide the same

detailed traffic data as all other MetroCount products

with the same benefits of consistency and high

reliability.

Congestion statistics can be analysed and compared

with historical data to provide traffic engineers

with peak road usage data over time. Increased

understanding of the influencing factors to periods

of congestion can assist with effective traffic

management.

Additionally, permanent traffic sites also provide

a sound reference for quality assurance and

extrapolation of temporary studies undertaken with

the MC5600. A reliable permanent dataset, can

be used as a benchmark to verify the accuracy and

validity of temporary data sets.

Common use cases include:True AADT (Annualised Average Daily Traffic) figures

from 52 weeks of data

▪ Weekday flow reports to identify congestion

periods and peak road operating conditions.

▪ 85th Percentile speed to determine the operating

speed of a road.

▪ Exceeding speed limit statistics by time of day to

target enforcement and education efforts.

▪ Vehicle class breakdown to plan future upgrades to

roads based on loads.

▪ Traffic characteristics related to driver behaviour

such as saturation flow rates and headway.

Four Lanes Of Binned DataThe MC5805 has four inputs to accurately count

up to four lanes of traffic. Fully configurable bin size,

thresholds, and lockout times allow for customisation

at each site. The MC5805 is designed for projects

where count only information is required providing up

to 4 years of data memory.

Better Count-Only AccuracyWhen only a simple count is required, detecting

vehicles with inductive loops allows for improved

accuracy based on vehicle front and rear rather

MetroCount MC5805 Loop Counter

than extrapolating axle data. Trucks and cars are

both counted as a start and end event, regardless of

configuration, reducing the volume of data collected

when compared to axle count information.

The Reliability and LongevityBuilt from the same componentry as the MC5810, the

MC5805 is designed for use in all conditions and can

be mounted in a cabinet or installed at the road side.

The installation of inductive loops can be conducted

by most experienced traffic contractors. The MC5805

features the same diagnostic tools as the MC5810.

MetroCount MC5810 Loop Classifier

Simple Components, High-tech ResultsMetroCount’s inductive loop sensors are built

from simple and inexpensive components, making

installation and maintenance straightforward while

ensuring highly reliable and accurate traffic data.

Contractors familiar with traffic signal sensors

will find installation straightforward. LoopScope &

LoopMonitor, bundled with MTE, are full diagnostic

tools that make any faults clear. If functional loops

are available, the MC5810 can interface with existing

loop sensors already installed in the road.

Length Based ClassificationWith detection of vehicles based on beginning and

end rather than each axle, the MC5810 provides

accurate length classification with time stamps

triggered when a vehicle enters and exits each

inductive loop field. Standard length-based schemes

define distinct vehicle classes, but as always with

MTE, custom schemes with any number of length

classifications may be created.

A Truly Permanent InstallationWith up to six months of continuous operation

using internal batteries and the ability to accept

external power (e.g.. from solar panelling or mains)

the MC5810 is ideal for hassle free long term traffic

surveys. Durability of embedded loop sensors allow

the installation to consistently monitor traffic for the

life of a road.

Hassle Free InstallationMetroCount makes use of extensive experience to

manage the entire installation process for clients.

Bicycle Monitoring{ }The benefits of cycling in cities are well

established. The pressing task for transport

managers is to apply this knowledge to achieve

better bicycle infrastructure and increase cyclist

participation. Modelling bicycle traffic is at the heart

of effective cost benefit analysis to justify improved

cycle infrastructure and increased funding.

MetroCount’s unique axle detection technology has

been proven to produce accuracy of better than 99%

in normal flow conditions. Verified by independent

studies, MetroCount bike survey systems provide

accurate information for every bike including speed,

direction, headway, length, and more. Summary data

can identify the daily, weekly or monthly volumes,

peak usage times, flow rates and congestion. Year-on-

year data can also help to analyse growth patterns

and the successful uptake of new infrastructure.

Experience and ReliabilityWith over 10 years of development behind our bicycle

monitoring equipment, the reliability and quality that

have become MetroCount’s point of difference are

evident in our bicycle counters. With a multitude of

installed bicycle monitoring sites currently surveying

traffic 24 hours a day, MetroCount is leading the

industry in detailed bike traffic information.

Working with the BestThe Netherlands is globally revered for their

integrated bike infrastructure transport network, with

enviable bike usage statistics highlighting the effect

of a focus on multimodal transport. MetroCount

continue to work closely with the world’s leading bike

infrastructure proponents to deliver products that

meets the demands of Dutch traffic engineers.

Record Every AxleBased on the same time-stamping technology as

MetroCount’s other vehicle classifiers, MetroCount

bike systems record every bike axle that passes over

the sensors. Processing axle information in software

post-survey allows non-bike sensor hits that fall

outside of the pattern of a bicycle to be excluded from

the data. This technology allows for highly accurate

detection and analysis of bike traffic.

True Direction DetectionWith detailed axle data MTE is able to determine

accurate direction of travel, providing useful details of

bike flows.

WeatherproofMetroCount Bike Classifier systems are fully weather

resistant. Gore-Tex breathable vents prevent moisture

from entering the units while allowing pressure

equalization.

Count In A ClusterWith cyclists often traveling in clusters, MTE data

analysis algorithms effectively distinguish varying

patterns of bicycle grouping. This information can

be analyzed in the MTE software, providing useful

information about the patterns of cycling in an area.

Speed InformationMonitoring the speed and headway of bike paths can

help to identify potential hazards. Filtering volumes

by speed and direction provides a visualization of

conditions during peak and off-peak cycling periods

helping to identify cycling modes.

MetroCount Bike Counter Systems

Low Profile SensorsThe MC5720 utilizes highly sensitive piezoelectric

sensors embedded into the pavement. The sensors

detect the precise time each bicycle wheel crosses over

the sensor.

Count AnywhereWith long-lasting batteries and the option to access

data remotely with FieldPod, bike monitoring systems

can be installed in remote locations.

Discrete CabinetFor permanent bike monitoring, MetroCount’s

discreet roadside cabinet is engineered for longevity.

Weatherproof construction ensures equipment is

protected from the elements.

Move with the TrafficThe MC5620 makes portable bike monitoring

easy and familiar with the use of two thin-walled

pneumatic tubes. Installation of the MC5620 is similar

to the universally used MC5600. The simplicity of

installation, and high degree of accuracy, make the

MC5620 an essential part of the traffic manager’s

response toolkit.

The MC5620 is optimized for accurate monitoring

of both dedicated bike paths and bike lanes in mixed

traffic(providing there is reasonable lane discipline).

Remote Access Traffic Data

Page 25: Metrocount Traffic Survey Equipment

Remote Access Traffic Data Collection{ }Innovations in the delivery of traffic data from

permanent sites have improved the processes

for monitoring and analysing traffic information.

Permanent traffic monitoring sites, coupled

with routine short term studies, inform logical

transportation decision making. Streamlining the

flow of information from the roadside to the user,

MetroCount’s FieldPod system enables a direct

link between traffic monitoring sites and road

managers over the mobile phone network. FieldPod

adds the benefits of remote communication to any

permanent MetroCount site using the MC5710,

MC5720, MC5805 or MC5810. MetroCount’s

FieldPod remote access technologies are the result

of continued engagement with traffic professionals

around the world to develop traffic survey solutions

that improve efficiency and save time.

Eliminate Routine Site VisitsFieldPod enables road managers to monitor sites

and receive data remotely, reducing the number

of hours spent surveying busy roads. Designed for

monitoring at high volume, remote, and inaccessible

sites, FieldPod reduces risk to field operators and

allows more time for monitoring lower volume, lower

risk sites. Sites monitored remotely decrease the cost

of traffic management and reduce interruptions to

traffic.

Mobile Network AccessibilityConnecting to available mobile network

infrastructure, FieldPod works anywhere that has

Collect

Transmit

available mobile phone access. System diagnostics

are run remotely to monitor the site.

Secure but SimpleDesigned with simplicity in mind, FieldPod traffic data

is securely recorded, stored and transported. Traffic

data is collected 24 hours a day, seven days a week

continuously, while the remote access system sends

the data to the end user at routine intervals.

Low Power - Low MaintenanceEmploying the same emphasis on low power

consumption that has made MetroCount traffic

counters so popular, FieldPod has been engineered

to operate for long periods of time on battery power.

FieldPod sites can be coupled with solar panels to

provide power indefinitely in almost all situations.

Low power hardware reduces maintenance, costs and

emissions.

One FieldPod Multiple UnitsConnect up to two MetroCount classifiers to a single

remote access module to monitor multi-lane sites

effectively. For example two MC5805 loop counter

units can provide simple count data for up to 8 lanes

of traffic through a single remote access module.

Spend Less, Monitor MoreFieldPod plans are catered to an organisation’s needs,

reducing initial outlay for equipment and spreading

the cost of surveys out to make traffic survey

budgeting predictable long-term.
