Tech TipsChoosing the Appropriate Digestion Vessel

“Digesting samples for silicon presents special problems. The temperature and acid

content are often out of the range that a polypropylene vessel can tolerate. Borosilicate glass or quartz vessels cannot be used because

they will contribute to background levels of silicon. The recommended option would be

PTFE or PFA material—see page 8 for specialty digestion vessels.”

Certification of Volume Accuracy

Representative samples of this lot of digestion vessels have been tested for volume accuracy by the procedures set forth in ASTM E542-1 Standard

Practice for Calibration of Laboratory Apparatus. Volume accuracy was found to be within the Class A tolerance set forth in ASTM 1272-02 Standard

Specification for Laboratory Glass Graduated Cylinders. Balances used in test procedures are certified yearly and traceable to NIST. Complete test results

and test conditions are available online at http://www.envexp.com.

Metals Background Analysis Report

Samples of disposable digestion cups are collected randomly from each manufacturing lot for analysis. Blank samples are digested and analyzed by an

independent laboratory using current ICP-MS methodology. Results are reported in the chart below. Field results may vary with environmental conditions,

analytical techniques and handling procedures. Care should be taken in storage and handling to prevent background contamination.

Environmental Express® Disposable Screw-Cap Digestion Cups

Trust your measurements—graduated for better sample dilutions – Volume certified for accuracy within 0.5%

– Certified for low metals background

– Choose 15-, 50-, and 100-mL volumes for your application and Environmental Express HotBlock® digestions

These digestion cups are specifically designed to provide exceptional performance in your Environmental Express HotBlock or AutoBlock® system. Manufactured from clarified polypropylene, cups provide higher temperature stability and greater chemical resistance. Graduated design allows you to dilute, digest, and store sample in the same vessel.

The 50-mL digestion cups have a total capacity of 68 mL; select from either green or white screw caps. The 100-mL digestion cup has a total capacity of 125 mL, whereas the 15-mL digestion cup has a total capacity of 18 mL.

Screw caps (except for SC415) are lined with 0.040" polyethylene-faced foam liners for a leak-proof seal. Only the metals-free polyethylene liner comes into contact with the sample.

Tech Tips

“Many digestion methods require the samples be held at a specific temperature for a set period of time. Monitoring the temperature of a digesting sample requires the end of the thermometer to be suspended in the liquid without touching the sides or bottom of the vessel. The temperature probe kits enable the analyst to demonstrate method compliance with accurate temperature readings. See our thermometers on page 4.”

Hexavalent Chromium/Cr6+

“The FlipMate and manifold (pages 12–13) are excellent accessories to hexavalent chromium analysis. The original digestion vessel with the FlipMate filter still attached can be used to store the filter and remaining solids for use in assessing low matrix spike recoveries. The receiving vessel can be used for pH adjustment prior to bringing the digestate up to final volume.”

Tech Tips

Caring for Your TorchesThe best way to ensure long torch life is to avoid contamination. Always handle quartz products using cotton or latex gloves, and take care to avoid touching the outer and inner shields of ICP torches.

• Use DI water to ensure no contaminants are introduced during cleaning and rinsing.

• Never touch the outer shield of an ICP torch with the bare hand.

• Don’t rinse a dirty torch in water, detergent, or acid solution, as it may result in either decreased performance or a broken torch.

The heating and cooling cycle inherent in ICP operation places a tremendous amount of stress on the torch and this, combined with any level of devitrification, can cause a torch to shatter instantly when placed in liquid. We have found that the best way to clean an ICP torch is to bake the torch in a muffle furnace.

Tech Tips

Surface Tension Draws Liquid Into the Spout

Spout

Gas (Highest Velocity is in the Center of

Gas Capillary)

Liquid

By adding a tiny spout that directs the liquid into the center of the gas flow, the liquid is impacted with 9 to 100 times the energy it would otherwise have, and the droplets produced are much smaller.

The gas orifice is beside the sample path, enabling nebulizers to run over very large ranges of flow rates. No plugging; the greatest width in sample path is at the tip.

Burgener Parallel Path Pneumatic Nebulizers

Get increased stability and greater sensitivity – Enhanced parallel path method produces a superior mist when compared to other pneumatic nebulizers

– Complete with fittings and ready to install†—at no additional charge

– PTFE gas and sample capillaries are employed for purity

– Minimize salting and reduce clogging with nonstick materials

Low Flow Ari-Mist™ Nebulizer (QB003) offers unparalleled sensitivity at low flow rates. Designed for small, particulate-free samples, it provides flow rates as low as 50 µL/min. PEEK® body.

Mira Mist™ Nebulizer is the workhorse of the Burgener family! The 425-µm wide sample path easily handles common environmental samples and most slurries. Available in PTFE body (QB007) or PEEK body (QB008). PTFE is suitable for all acids, including HF, and all solvents; while PEEK is acceptable for most applications other than high acid concentrations.

Ultra-High Solids Nebulizer (QB009) is well-suited for high solids and works well in most instruments with cyclonic spray chambers. Handles very high levels of particles without clogging. PTFE body.

†Provide us with your model number when you place your order. Your nebulizer will be ready to install when it arrives.

Tubing

Flared-End General-Purpose Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Pump Tubing

Eliminates the difficulty of inserting small-bore tubing in ICP-MS systems

Developed as a direct result of customer requests! It can often be difficult to insert a sample tube into a peristaltic pump tube on ICP-MS systems, especially tubing with a small-bore inner diameter (ID). For example, pump tubing used for internal standards usually has an ID of 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm and is not compatible with the sample pump tubing OD of 1.3 mm. A flared end on this peristaltic pump tube allows the larger sample capillary tube to be inserted. Specifications are the same as the general-purpose PVC tubing on page 20.

Tech TipsChoose the Right Tubing! Always test tubing before extended use. We recommend you place the tubing in the medium to be used for a period of 48 hours. After this time, examine the tubing for signs of swelling, softening, cracking, or hardening. If there is no sign of deterioration, test a sample in pump under the conditions of your application.

This picture shows a comparison of flared-end PVC pump tubing,

PT0020F, to general-purpose PVC tubing, PT0020.

Tech TipsHow to splice microbore tubing

A

C

B

A

C

B

1. Bring together two lengths of tubing; both lengths of tubing should have the same ID and OD.

2. Center a 1 to 2" piece of larger tubing (C) over the ends of the two pieces to be joined (A and B). The short tubing piece should be of similar material and with an ID approximately equal to the OD of the tubing to be joined.

3. With the short piece (C) centered over the joint, apply solvent or sealant to the outside of tubing (B) and slide tubing (C) onto (B). Repeat the process for tubing (A) to join tubing permanently. If future tubing changes are necessary, then apply solvent or sealant only to tubing (B) and (C). Use a ketone-type solvent to splice PVC tubing and a tetrahydro furan with Santoprene tubing.
