Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Reporting

We are almost at the end of first semester and we will soon

be issuing written reports of your children’s progress in all

our key learning areas. The report you receive will give the

standard your child has achieved across five levels. It is

important to note that the rankings assigned to each key

learning area are not issued to match a bell curve. Rather,

before the process of teaching a unit of learning has begun,

teachers plan their assessment, and in so doing decide what

a student needs to demonstrate to gain an “A”, a “B” or a

“C” and so on. Teachers do this work together to ensure that

there is consistency across the year level, and indeed across

the school, in making the judgements which you will find in

your child’s report. While we seek consistency, it is

important to note that one student’s “C” may not be quite

the same as another’s. One student may have a “C” that is

on the cusp of “B” while another student’s “C” might be on

the cusp of a “D”. The best person to consult in regards to

this is your child’s teacher.

Five rankings, A to E, or their equivalent in the younger

years, do not tell the whole story. As a parent of a primary

student, I was always much more interested in the

assessment of my child’s effort. If a child is really applying

him or herself to reasonable capacity, then what more can

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

One School Report Cards

Teachers are currently completing the semester 1 class reports for every child in the school. The

reports are comprehensive and provide you with an assessment of your child’s progress in the various

subjects studied this first semester. The reports will be available via Q Parents on Thursday 22 June

2017.

Parents who want a report card with a distribution of achievement indicating the spread of A to E’s in

that year’s cohort can request an electronic copy or paper copy using the email address as follows:

[email protected]

I am aware that teachers have had interviews earlier this semester to discuss the children’s progress

and following this initial progress report there ought to be no surprises on the report card.

Nevertheless, where necessary, teachers will arrange interviews regarding some students; parents

also may request an interview.

Please take the opportunity to read the report with your child and discuss its contents, focus on

success and consider ways of improving in areas requiring attention.

Chess Team Success

Congratulations to our 15 chess players who participated in Tuesday’s chess tournament on their

success.

Over 266 students from a range of schools attended this tournament at Churchie and one of our

teams came First in the division B competition. Well done to our chess players. Under Mrs Schilg’s

guidance chess has continued to grow with a strong membership.

Early Departures-Holidays

If you plan to leave on holidays before the end of the school term it is important that you notify the

school office regarding your intentions.

Year 5 on Camp

We wish our year 5 students and their accompanying teachers well when they set off on their annual

camp to Mapleton on the Sunshine Coast in the second half of next week. The camp provides for a

wide range of challenging activities, taking children out of their comfort zone in a controlled manner,

and encouraging them to grow in character and confidence.

Kokoda Challenge Brisbane

In a great display of student leadership, Joel H. and Eric G. led a school team in the Kokoda

Challenge Brisbane. Out of 52 school teams we came a very creditable 5th. Thank you to Matt

Gibney who took part with our students.

Cold and Flu Season

With the cooler weather now upon us, it is cold and flu season. While students’ education is very

important, it is also important that students remain at home to recover from any virus and stop the

spread of the virus by close contact with their friends and also school staff. Please see the attached

information sheet from Queensland Health.

KOKODA CHALLENGE

On the 6th of June, 2016, more than 15 Holland

Park State School students went to Churchie to

participate in the interschool chess tournament.

The second Holland park team came first in the

B division however no other Holland park teams

made it onto the leader boards. Holland Park

had one team in the premiers tournament, and

3 teams in the B division. This was a very

successful day filled with fun.

On the 3rd of June Mr. Gibney, Eric G and myself

participated in the Kokoda challenge Brisbane.

This event started at 8 o’clock and we finished

just after half past ten giving our team a time of

2hrs 32mins. Our team came 5th out of 52 school

teams and 9th out of 92 other teams that

participated in this 15km hike. Our team was

also the first primary school across the finish

line. If I had to sum up

the entire event in one

word it would be

“amazing”.

In Philosophy in 6SE, we have been learning

about counter-examples. We decided to

challenge the generalisation that “all beautiful

people are happy.” Here are some of our ideas:

“Being beautiful can make you self-conscious.

You might think you have to be perfect and that

makes you worry about your looks even more.”

Charli

“You might think that you only have friends

because you’re beautiful and that might make

you sad.” Tia

“Celebrities might be beautiful but if they can’t

get away from the paparazzi, they won’t be

happy!” Ruby

“Who decides what beautiful is?”

the group responded:

“How you are raised matters- your experiences.”

Jemma

“Some people make you change your idea

because you don’t want to be different.” Max

“Some people are scared to have a different idea

- they’re afraid to not be liked.” Amanda

Emma concluded with:

“When you’re content with your life, you’ll be

happy. Beauty plays no part.”

Is she right? What do you think?

[email protected]

Volunteers chefs will be preparing:

Gluten and dairy free fried rice

Gluten and dairy free butter chicken

Vegetarian stir fry with rice

Thank you to the volunteers who have assisted in the past with cooking up these popular dishes for

our school community!

Building Fund Donation Request

Working with the school, the P&C is undertaking a review of the old dental building near the school

oval. We envisage that the additional, transformed space will allow the school’s existing programs to

extend both in capacity and imagination across multiple disciplines including arts, music, performance

and science. We also hope that this space will allow an increase in the capacity for Out of School

Hours Care.

The work planned is budgeted to cost $25,000 and this year we’ll be using donations to the HPSS P&C

Building Fund to fund this. By now you may have received your invitation to contribute via the

classroom, class parent rep, or perhaps you've seen it on Facebook. Just in case you haven't, a copy

has been attached to this newsletter for your convenience.

In order to receive your tax receipt for this financial year, be sure to have your donation in by

Monday 26th June to receive a tax receipt for this financial year. Tax receipts will be issued via your

child’s classroom.

Thank you to those who have already made their donation - your contribution is valued and

appreciated!

If you have any questions please drop us an email on

[email protected].

All families who contribute before 30 June 2017 will also go into the

draw to win a $200 voucher from The Athletes Foot.

Cyber-Safety Parent Information Sessions

Date Claimer - 20 & 21 July 2017

As part of the roll-out of the P&C funded iPads for classrooms and Robotics Club, the P&C are proud to

present Cyber-Safety Parent Information Sessions to provide parents with important information to

help navigate the ever-changing world of technology.

Our speaker, Brett Lee, is a former Queensland Police Office who spent 16 of his 22 years on the force

as a Detective in the field of Child Exploitation. Brett has been personally involved in online

investigations, arrests and prosecutions of offenders whose medium for preying on children was the

internet. He believes the key to protecting the most vulnerable people in our society, our children,

from online dangers is education and will offer simple but important information to help parents with

online safety. You don't have to be an internet whiz to know how to keep your

children safe online!

These free sessions are available to HPSS parents on either the evening of Thursday

20th or Friday 21st July. Be sure to put the dates in your diary NOW so you don't

miss this important opportunity!

Further details will be provided early next term.

Estee Lauder Company - VIP Sales Event

Saturday 22 July

Feedback from previous Estee Lauder VIP events has suggested that the end of the year rush makes

it difficult for families to attend this event in November, so we've moved it forward!

The Estee Lauder Company Corporate Store will now be open to HPSS VIPs on 22nd July from

10am until 4pm! This store is not open to the public and products are significantly discounted!

Visitors will have access to skincare, nail care, make-up, men's and women's fragrances, and gift

packs from brands including Estee Lauder, Clinique, M.A.C, Bobbi Brown, Jo Malone, La Mer, Tom

Ford, Coach, Aveda, Aramis and designer fragrances.

Ticket details will be available soon, in the meantime be sure to put the date in your diary and tell

your friends and family! You can bring as many friends as you wish, provided they all have

tickets. Stay tuned for further details.

Planning Ahead…

We are still in search of convenors in preparation for 2018. Remember there is always plenty of

support for every P&C event and check-lists are available to make things easier for new

convenors. The P&C Executive and Members are always available to lend a hand and offer support

and are only an email or phone call away at any time!

Processes and systems are in place for our ongoing events in order to make sure organising future

events is simple for future convenors. If you think you may be able to be a convenor or assist the

convenor for any P&C event in 2018 it is a good idea to flag it with the P&C early so that you may be

able to 'shadow' this year's convenor to get a feel for things. This is a great way to find out what is
