Morningside Elem. STEM School Friday, November 18, 2016 Number 4
I am writing to tell you about our November school wide STEM challenge. We are challenging our teachers and students to the Can Do! Engineering challenge, where our students will be using the Engineering Design Process to construct structures out of canned food items.
Each classroom collects can donations November 7th-23rd.
Each classroom will use the Engineering Design Process to create a design that will be constructed using the cans. Classrooms will construct their designs Monday, November 28
th-Wednesday, November 30
th.
All Hy-Vee food stores in Sioux City and South Sioux City will be accepting canned food donations in partnership with us.
The Sioux City Community Schools Foundation is partnering with us on a fundraiser, called “30/30” to get the community involved with raising money for reading program funding, such as the Iowa Reading Corps, a program that supports Morningside Elementary students.
“30/30” is to bring awareness to the 30-million-word deficit that children of poverty experience, compared to their peers. If you are interested in participating in this fundraiser, you can find more information at http://www.siouxcityschoolfoundation.org/.
The Foundation’s fundraiser finale will be held at Morningside Elementary School the evening of November 30th, 5:30-6:30.
A panel of judges (Sioux City celebrities, Art Center representative, etc.) will be in attendance at Morningside for this event, and will determine a Can Do! Engineering winner for TK-2
nd and one for 3
rd-5
th.
The winners of the Can Do! Engineering challenge will take a field trip to North High to help deliver all the canned food items to the North High School Food Pantry that has just gotten started. (We have chosen the North High Food Pantry due to the fact that East High and West High do not have a food pantry at this time.)
The general public is invited to the Can Do! Engineering Judging & 30/30 Foundation Fundraiser event. The cost of admission is $10 per person or $5.00 plus the donation of a new book or canned food item.
Hy-Vee is working with us to provide a meal at this event, and because of that, we will need a head count prior to the event. We ask that if you are interested in attending, you email me at [email protected] to let me know how many of your family members will be attending.
I encourage you to email me at [email protected] or call me at (712) 274-4048 with any questions you may have about this project. We have tied the November at home STEM challenge to this as well, so that the students are free to create their own design if they desire to.
We have seen an amazing amount of support for STEM this year from our families, and I can’t tell you the impact that that has had on our students. Thank you so much for your partnership with us, and for helping us to educate our Eagles!

Fifth Grade Learning Fun
We are well into second quarter and the kids are currently learning to multiply decimals.
This requires using a lot of 2-digit multiplication so continue to practice, practice, practice….
In social studies 5th graders are learning about the American Revolution. Ask them to
tell you about the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, Lexington and Concord and Bunker
Hill. They had a great opportunity to participate in a Skype with the Boston Tea Party Muse-
um where several students had speaking parts in the Boston Massacre trial and in a debate
about the Boston Tea Party.
Writing for quarters two and three are combined into one research project. This quarter
we will learn to take notes and cite our sources. The kids will become a biographer for the his-
torical figure of their choice. We will then learn to write a research paper about that person.
This will culminate in a very special presentation. You will want to save March 10, 2017 to
attend our Living Wax Museum featuring our chosen historical figures! More details will fol-
low after winter break.

Dear Morningside Elementary School Families,
We are excited to announce that we would
like to begin a Safe Routes to School program at
Morningside Elementary School. Safe Routes to
School programs are designed to improve the
health and well-being of children by enabling,
encouraging, and providing a safe walk or bike
ride to and from school. In order for us to do
that, we would like to learn your thoughts about
children walking and biking to school. We are
asking that you take about 5 minutes to com-
plete a survey about how your child(ren) get to
school. We ask that each family complete only
one survey. Please know that your responses will
be kept confidential and neither your name nor
your child's name will be collected. This will help
the Safe Routes to School Committee make deci-
sions when putting together future programs
and events.

We are looking for a parent volunteer to be part of a Safe Routes to School Coalition. The Coa-lition would most likely meet monthly on a Thursday during the school day. Please email Mrs. OShea if you are interested.
