As you know the tenders for Stage 1 of the construction works for the $100m plus redevelopment closed in February. The tender submissions are now being assessed, and we're currently in negotiations with the shortlisted contractors.

The tender evaluation process takes some time, and we are close to announcing the preferred contractor.

Key updatesA lot has happened since January as we prepare for the commencement of construction. Here's a summary of the latest developments and upcoming dates.

Tree removal completed The hospital looks quite different from Rintoul Street, with the removal of trees that took place over the last five weekends.

Parking It will soon be upon us that the contractors are on site and construction is underway. As you may be aware this is going to affect our on-site car parking for staff, patients, and specialists.

Work has been ongoing over the last year to identify who uses the car park and what times people come and go. We have also been closely looking at available car parking in our location.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our recent car parking survey. Your feedback has given us more information on where you work, what time you come to work, go home, and if you are a shift worker.

Analysis of the survey will help us make decisions around how many staff require a parking space, and at what times, which will assist us in factoring in where it is best and safest to offer you a car parking space.

mechanical fresh air, and then to seal the windows. The completion of this work is planned to be late March/early April.

What does this mean?

Windows to the south side of the building will have transparent sheets of Perspex fitted on to the internal window frames.

Grilles will be installed in each room where windows have been sealed shut, fresh air will be emitted from grilles into the room.

Background

Stage 1 of this project involves the construction of a new building (aka South Block) which will house Pacific Radiology, administration, main reception, front of house café, consultants’ space, GE, and the Heart Centre.

Construction of Stage 1 will take place adjacent to south side of the existing building. Due to the proximity of construction activity, consulting rooms will be affected by construction noise.

If you have any queries please email us at wakefielddevelopment@@acurity.co.nz regarding the construction noise mitigation.

We are currently in the process of finding some off-site car parking and with this in mind, how we are going to transport you to and from the car parking site.

We are also asking for feedback in regards to extra bicycle racks, how many people would utilise these, and thoughts around carpooling. If there are enough people interested and keen to carpool we may be able to assist in coordinating through our intranet.

Car parking solutions will be communicated to staff, specialists, and patients in the near future.

Newtown Festival

It was a fantastic turnout at the Newtown Festival on Sunday 3 March, with many interested Wellingtonians coming to visit our stall and finding out more about our redevelopment. Thank you to all who assisted in making our stall engaging!

Building E - Construction Noise Mitigation

As you are aware we have been planning to mitigate the effects of demolition and construction noise to the consulting rooms by sealing the windows shut with Perspex and providing mechanical fresh air.

The mitigation work started on Monday 18 February. The first stage is to install

Message from CEO

Dr Jonathan Coleman Chief Executive Officer Acurity Health Group

2019 is the year of visible action on the Wakefield rebuild. After a long period of planning, design and preparation, we are about to get in to the actual build itself. It’s incredibly exciting, because once it starts, progress will be rapid. It’s all about to become very real.

The tenders for building are all in- that means that interested construction companies have replied to Acurity putting forward their best price for the build in the hope of winning the contract. We are currently analysing those, considering not just price, but also the team and how they intend to construct the building including their methodology as they work around a live operational hospital, that will continue to provide services throughout the build. We will be in a position by the end of March to announce our construction partner, with the “turning of the sod” planned soon after. That’s a very symbolic event, because it officially signals the start of construction.

However, there’s already work going on in preparation for construction. The IT and finance teams have been relocated from their site at the back of the hospital in preparation for demolition of their old quarters. You will also have noted the trees that have been removed, and Steve and the maintenance team have been doing prep work around the site in anticipation of what is to come.

There will be lot of obvious activity around the site in the coming months as contractors move in and work commences. This has been planned for over a long period, and the emphasis is on Wakefield continuing with business as usual. I’m also very conscious of the need to ensure that patients and staff all have good access to parking, and that people can go about their business easily and freely. We will make every endeavour to ensure that this happens.

Anyway, we will continue to keep you informed as the development progresses; 2019 will be a landmark year for Wakefield.

Airframe® Modular Ceiling System

Watch me

Airframe® Modular Ceiling

In a New Zealand first Acurity is introducing innovative cleanroom technology to nine operating rooms across the country including at the new Wakefield Hospital.

Cleanroom technology is proven to provide more effective contamination control, creating a better working environment for clinicians and delivering superior clinical outcomes for patients. The AirFRAME Ceiling System is a single-large-diffuser system that directs airborne particles and contaminants away from the area of the patient and theatre staff while encompassing the room with HEPA-filtered air.

A recent Australian study published in the American Journal of Infection Control concluded that in the sterile field AirFRAME had 80% fewer microbes than conventionally built operating rooms (ORs)

and the air distribution system was 67% more effective at removing contaminants from the sterile field than other systems. AirFRAME performs better than conventional ORs to effectively prevent the chance of surgical site infection.

Modular construction is the standard way of building ORs overseas. It offers many benefits over traditional build as well as significant benefits for the ongoing lifecycle of the hospital. The AirFRAME modular ceiling system represents a leap forward in meeting current OR ceiling system design requirements, simplifies future adaptability, reduces construction timeframe and provides clinicians with superior performance.

This is the first of several new technologies earmarked as part of the exciting redevelopment of Wakefield Hospital.

Designing a structural base isolation system for the building to improve resilience to seismic events is a key part of this role.

In addition to the structure the team designs the ventilation, air conditioning, power, lighting, communications, security, medical gas, plumbing, and drainage, services for the building. Once complete these interconnected services will provide the brain, heart, and lungs of our new building.

Why is Acurity Health Group redeveloping Wakefield Hospital? Following the Christchurch earthquake, the hospital was issued Yellow Notices by Wellington City Council to seismically strengthen the building. Acurity has undertaken to totally redevelop the facility.

Will health services be maintained during the construction? All health services will continue to be provided throughout the construction. The staged delivery of the project will allow continuous provision of services and it will be business as usual for Wakefield.

What services are being provided in the new hospital? The hospital will continue to provide the same services.

When will construction commence and when will it be finished? Construction will commence the first half of 2019 and be completed in 2023.

What's happening with the old buildings? The buildings are not protected and will be demolished to make way for the new hospital. The project will acknowledge the building and its history of providing healthcare to the Wellington community since 1929.

What is the project cost? The estimated total end cost is over NZD $100m.

How strong will the structure be? The new buildings will be more earthquake-resilient with the installation of base isolators. Accelerometers will be installed to monitor and report on the buildings structural performance and integrity during and following an earthquake.

What impact will there be on traffic during construction? There will be additional traffic generated. The contractor will be required to implement a traffic management plan. This will be in accordance with Wellington City Council regulations.

Will I be able to park on site during construction? Parking on site will always be a priority for medical consultants, patients and visitors. The project team are sourcing alternative parking options for staff and tenants.

What technology will be in the new facility? The hospital will be fitted with the latest and most advanced technology for healthcare. Discussions with vendors have commenced.

Will the rose garden remain? Currently the rose garden will not be affected by the redevelopment.

Where do I find out more? You can view the project on www.wakefield.co.nz/development
