Fun Day 12

As one semester draws to a close and another one starts, it provides all of us with the opportunity to reflect on the many moments of Charger Pride, Passion, and Spirit, and to look forward with antic-ipation to what the future holds for the 2015-2016 school year. As always, Centennial students have shown excellence in the classroom, in perfor-mance, in competition and in leadership. We are so proud of them, and so thankful for the dedicat-ed staff who support all of their endeavours.

Since we last connected there has been much ac-tivity in the school as our students are actively engaged in school life. We were pleased when Peter Smith presented our Link Crew Students with a cheque for over $3000.00 acknowledging their partnership in the “Buick Drive for Kids” cam-paign hosted by Centennial. Our Student Council raised over $6000.00 for Christmas Sharing which allowed them to prepare and deliver 40 baskets to families in our community. Global Awareness ran a successful campaign collecting toys for Syrian refugees. Chargers truly understand the im-portance of giving back.

Student’s Council led us through another success-ful spirit week leading into the holidays. Students came to school in pajamas, wore green and red, and dug through their closets to find their ugliest holiday sweater. Just recently, we were all chal-lenged with group “look a-like day” – the Science team impressed us all when they arrived at school as minions. They have already planned their first event of the new semester – the Snowball Semi-Formal will be on February 12th. We are so im-pressed with the level of leadership that our Stu-dent Council displays!

The winter athletic season is in full swing! Boys’ and Girls’ Hockey, Junior and Senior Boys’ Basket-ball, Gymnastics, Junior and Senior Girls’ Volley-ball, and Wrestling are in full gear. We anticipate that our teams will compete with Charger Passion and show excellent sportsmanship! As always, we are grateful for the dedication of our coaches.

The challenge for bragging rights starts on the first

day of semester two. Each student will belong to one of four Houses, and through participation in Spirit-based activities and house challenges, will earn points. Students will have multiple opportu-nities in the first week of the semester to start earning points for their team and to catch the “House Spirit”. We appreciate the passion and dedication of our House Captains, our Student Council leads, and staff who worked on this amaz-ing initiative.

It is important for families of students in grade 10, and some students in grades 11 and 12 to note that the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test will be implemented on March 31st. As a school, we have been committed to developing reading and writing skills since students joined us in grade nine across all curriculum areas. Several other support initiatives will be provided to all students in the weeks leading up to the test. If you have any questions, please contact us.

We look forward to so many great events as the semester unfolds. One of the highlights will be our student production of Dracula in the spring. In light of the theme of the production, we are ask-ing for some of your blood! Centennial will host a blood drive in May and all who donate will be offered tickets to the production at a reduced cost! It is a great way to support others and wit-ness a spectacular play. Stay tuned for more infor-mation!

Finally, we wish all continued success in semester two. Semester One report cards are enclosed and we hope that you will take the time to review achievement results together as a family. Thoughtful reflection will facilitate setting goals for the new semester. If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school.

International Students Present at Sir John A. MacDonald PS

Centennial’s International Students visited Sir John A Macdonald Public School in December to complete

presentations on their home countries. Six elementary classes participated and students had a fantastic time

learning about new cultures. Ms. Lindenberg’s ESL students from China, Japan, Brazil, Germany and Mexico

shared their experiences. The elementary students were able to learn about a new country and participate in

games, crafts and musical activities. A great day was had by all.

Global Awareness at CSS

The Global Awareness Committee held a toy drive for refugee children from Syria. An abundance of toys

were gathered to present to the refugee children upon their arrival to Canada. The Committee also prepared

baked goods for the annual Centennial Christmas Sharing Auction. All funding went to local families in need

for their Christmas food baskets. Global Awareness also contributed funds to assist the humanitarian organi-

zations: Doctors Without Borders and the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The Committee will continue its human-

itarian contributions in the new semester.
