DERIVAN MATISSE has invited Merv Moriarty to design three sets of Matisse Structure acrylic paints: Fine Art including cadmiums and open medium (10) Art & Design (10) including open medium and Essential Colours (5). In coming workshops, I will be demonstrating these carefully chosen pigments, based on colour science, experience and aesthetics - allowing you to achieve the widest range of pure or subtle colour with the least difficulty. Of all mediums, Matisse Structure Acrylics provide the utmost creative flexibility, allowing for the greatest control over: transparency, translucency, opacity, surface bloom and texture. MM

Relationship is key to the successful use of colour.This is the most considered and most discussed aspect of colour - does this colour go with that colour? Do you like this colour scheme? Is it OK to put this colour in with these colours?A colour on its own is something we hardly ever experience as adjacent colours affect the colour we are looking at. Relationship is key to the successful use of colour. This is so in any art or design project. The link between colour mixing and colour relationship: In these related workshops we will explore the commonly occurring association between colour mixing and colour relationship. We will explore how the Moriarty colour wheel and mixing ‘plotter’ can help you create a colour story (colour scheme) that will ‘sing’. We will also look at the influence of tone on colour harmony and how it needs to interconnect with the other variables of colour: hue and purity.Day one - we cover the relationship between the modern colour wheel, colour mixing and colour relationship, including practical colour exercises that do not require drawing skill.Day two - putting the above into practice using your own studies as the foundation for a work that will let ‘the colours sing.’MATERIALS – Here is a list of suitable mediums, surfaces and brushes, not in any order of preference.

- Acrylics and primed paper or canvas - Oil paint is not recommended due to allergies unless medium

and cleanser are non-allergenic. Bristle brushes for oils and acrylics – ranging from flat at about 6mm up

to 25mm Filbert – from about 8mm to 14mm plus round if you wish.

- Gouache, cartridge pad or good paper, quality nylon or natural hair brushes

- Palette knife for both mixing paints and cleaning palette; plate or palette for hand-holding

- Pastels, pastel paper

PIGMENTS - a minimum of six colours plus extra white including: magenta, red, orange, yellows such as Cadmium yellow mid and Cadmium Yellow light, a green such as viridian or emerald and cobalt blue OR

phthalo blue, ultramarine blue – you may want a violet or purple, yellow ochre is handy, as is an earth red.

Working outdoors is an option – all equipment must be light and easy to carry
