Greetings fellow H.O.G. Members,

It has been a very long, cold, and snowy winter. I for one cannot wait to unplug the charger, take

the bike out of the trailer and get back on the road. Those of you that were able to get to the southern or

southwestern sunny climes of our vast country this winter were fortunate indeed.

We have a terrific schedule of rides ahead of us and I want to thank the Ride Committee and all of

you that contributed suggestions for rides this season. The committee has scheduled 27 Chapter rides in-

cluding two overnight rides. Adding to our schedule are six Laconia Harley-Davidson dealership rides plus

three fantastic and traditional rides during Laconia Motorcycle Week. You can be assured that there is a

scheduled ride just for you.

We also have a fantastic group of Discretionary Officers that will be planning events and activities

for everyone during the coming year and I’m sure all of you appreciate the work they do. I’m looking for-

ward to seeing what Cathy Letellier and Mike Egeler have in store for this year’s Ride Challenge, it will be

unique and fun for all. Our Activities Officer, Donna Monti is already formulating a plan for Chapter sup-

port of Motorcycle Week activities and I hope you will pitch in as much as possible for this fun event. La-

dies of Harley will once again be led by Cindy Lou Gray and I hope all our ladies will join and support the

LOH efforts. Regina Cronis, our new Safety Officer, has some vital information to share with all riders and

she is working on several workshops for our members. Both our website and our quarterly newsletters

are the means for Chapter communication thanks to Lana Dearborn and Barb Harris respectively. And I

would be remiss if I didn’t mention Gerry Fernandez for the terrific job he is doing by keeping our mem-

bership rolls organized and up-to-date. Thank you one and all for all that you do as volunteers.

Speaking of Volunteers, this is your year. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been a 20 year member like

our volunteer greeter, Joe Boucher, or if you are a ‘newbie’ joining the Chapter in 2019. This is your time

to get involved and have some fun doing it. Don’t be afraid if you’ve never had experience, there will be

someone to show you the way! There are loads of opportunities in the coming months from assisting at

the LHD Dealership monthly events to helping at chapter rides by showing up early and offering to help

the Road Captains with sign-up sheets. If you haven’t been at the information desk during Motorcycle

Week you are truly missing a great opportunity to meet people from all parts of the globe. This is the ca-

maraderie part of FUN so be sure to volunteer to be an integral part of Winni HOG and Laconia Motor-

cycle Week. Who wouldn’t be enthused about talking about your latest adventure? And the people you meet are equally willing to share their adventures. For most, just getting to Laconia is an adventure in itself.

Everyone has a story to tell, it’s up to you to just ask and listen.

Finally, I would like to encourage everyone to take pictures, lots of pictures; pictures of yourselves

and the places you visit in your travels. And don’t forget to include your bikes in the photo. This is espe-

cially necessary for those of you that may not be able to attend a chapter ride because of your work

schedules or whatever the reason. Just send the picture with a short blurb of the ride, the place and some-thing about the ride to Lana for posting on our website Photo page. After all, it’s about the journey and

our shared desire to ride which brings us together. So that the time to share your memories with the rest

of us.

I wish all of you a safe and happy riding season.

Historian’s Message By Joe Boucher

THE END IS NEAR---

As history looks forward and backwards, we see some long time biker events coming to an end. One such annual event is the Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom Demonstration Run that has been held in Washing-ton, D.C. each year for the past 32 years. This Memorial Day’s ride on Sunday May 26th will be the final year for this historic event.

The single biggest reasons for stopping this event is the cost of hosting the event, obtaining permits, and the fact that various official entities and Federal Agencies involved are making it overly difficult to organize, especially with their lack of cooperation. From the very beginning, even the mission statement of the Rolling Thunder organization has caused a bit of static, since there is a faction of Americans and politicians who believe that all of our POW’s are accounted for. Last year’s event cost was over $200,000.00. The money spent was for security, port-a-potties, clean-up, parking etc. etc. The cost to rent the Pentagon parking lot alone for just the one day was $60,000.00.

It was always the intention of the Rolling Thunder Group that the ride would be a demonstration ride and not a parade of motorcycles. It’s a call for the Government’s recognition and protection of Prisoners of War (POW’s) and those Missing In Action (MIA’s). The Rolling Thunder event began as a demonstration follow-ing the era of the Vietnam War, which was a difficult time in America’s history. Similar to today’s political climate, our nation was divided over issues of peace and war, however, many of America’s military who were killed or missing in action and whose remains were not being brought home to be respectfully buried and honored became the issue. So in 1987, Veterans of the Vietnam War rallied together with their fami-lies, fellow veterans, and veteran’s advocates and organized the first demonstration at the Capital Building in Washington, D.C. during the Memorial Day weekend to bring attention to this problem.

What started out in 1987 as 2500 motorcycles gathering together is now almost beyond anyone’s ability to control in the already traffic-packed streets of the D.C. metropolitan area. Last year 500,000 bikers and 400,000 spectators gathered for this event. The bikers announced their arrival with the roar of their Harley-Davidson’s, a sound not unlike the 1965 bombing campaign against North Vietnam named “Operation Roll-ing Thunder”. IT HAS BECOME THE WORLD’S LARGEST SINGLE DAY MOTORCYCLING EVENT IN HISTORY.

Thank you to the organizers of Rolling Thunder, and everyone who has ever ridden in this demonstration—for all of the amazing work they have done over the years, as well as for their service to the biker communi-ty, to their country, to the memory of all veterans who made it home and those veterans who did not, and to the United States of America.

There are 90 Rolling Thunder Chapters organized in 33 states and several overseas countries. Starting next year these chapters will organize their event on a state by state or country basis. Rolling Thunder is not stopping, they are just changing. It is important to acknowledge all that Rolling Thunder has accom-plished in the last three decades, such as bringing awareness of the POW/MIA’s, visiting veterans as VA hospitals, advocating for and advancing legislation to improve this country’s response to the POW/MIA issue as well as veteran’s benefits and concerns, and providing financial and other support to veterans and their families in need.

AND THEN THE THUNDER ROLLED AWAY---
