2019 Membership Report Gerry Fernandez

Winnipesaukee Hog Tales 2529

All our Chapter Officers are volunteers and dedicate

many hours of hard work to the Chapter.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR REPORT-Joe Newman

-Hello Winni HOG members!

This will be the last Assistant Director update for 2018.

First off I would like to thank and congratulate all the Winni HOG Road Captains for a really great year. Be-cause of your efforts, not only was it safe, we visited many places and enjoyed the rides. Because at the end of the day, it is all about the riding anyway! Again, Thank you and look forward to 2019.

I also want to send out a big Thank You to our outgoing Treasurer Fran Maineri and Director Ron Egalka. Both have been a big part of the business end of the club and volunteered much time to the membership. Your passion for riding and in HOG shows in what you have both accomplished. Well done gentleman!

I also want to welcome newly elected Treasurer Joe Monti and Director Mike Gregory. Both bring knowledge and passion to their new positions and a love for riding. I look forward to working with them and can’t wait to see where Winni HOG goes under their guidance.

The motor company has not announced dates or locations for 2019 HOT training yet. We will update this as we know more.

At the December meeting I announced the results of the Ride 365 program. Awards and recognition will be finalized over the winter and the final tally should be announced in February 2019. Based on what info I found, there were 535 chapters registered and Winni Hog 80th nationally logging a chapter total of 181,504 miles. In our regional standing for the Northeast chapters, we finished 10th. I think this is a tremendous achievement given the short length of our real riding season. So again, Thank You for all that registered and logged miles into the program this year. We will await the final standings to see what this brings.

A nice article was written about the 2018 Iron Adventure Rally in the October 2018 edition of the Thunder Press. It was nice to see that 2 of our members were noted in the article. Over the years both Barb Harris and Mike Egeler devote a lot of time to the rallies and the recognition was well deserved. Well done guys and thank you for representing Winni HOG as you do!

In closing, I want to again thank the membership for a great 2018 riding season and wish everyone a Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year.

Membership stands at 161 active members. We had 3 new members, Alan Bondjoukdjian, Susie Fernandez, and Kerri Solomon. Please remind the members that January is coming up and there are a lot of January renewals coming.

DON’T FORGET TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP!!!

Hello Members,

In 2015 when I joined this chapter I never thought I’d be standing in front of you as your

Director. Thank you for your trust in me to lead this club. I’m looking forward to the opportunity

of working with our other board members, you as our membership and our sponsoring dealership

to carry this chapter into the future. As a chapter we should have a Mission and a Vision, Values

and Goals. If not why do we exist. I would like you to think about what our Mission and Vision is

and how we as a chapter can implement our values to reach our goals.

I am excited see what the new year will hold for us as a chapter and get back into riding,

which is what we do best. It won’t be long before the 96th Laconia Motorcycle Week will be here

along with the 2019 Iron Adventure Rally at Okemo Ski Resort in Ludlow, VT on July 18-20 where

our chapter was the winner of the 2018 Rally “Chapter Challenge”.

Again “Thank You” for electing me as your Director and I can’t wait to see everyone on our rides and at our events in

the coming year.

“Ride and have Fun”

Mike Gregory

Director

It is with mixed feelings that I sit down to write my last message as your Director for the Winnipesaukee Hog Tales. I can’t believe two

years have elapsed! I’ve heard: “the older you get, the faster time flies by.” Yup! But this is ridiculous!

There are so many facets to the WinniHOG of today upon which we can reflect and, given the time of year, reflection is certainly appropriate.

I began my term as Director two years ago by thanking a number of fellow Officers, committee members, Road Captains and others and I owe

them even more gratitude now. And, speaking of gratitude, I want to thank Will and Kathy Swart (LHD GM and “The Boss Lady”) and Rick

Bassett, our HOG Manager, for their unswerving dealership support of WinniHOG.

One of my objectives as Director was to take Harley’s mantra two years ago to heart: “Let’s Ride!” And, to me, that meant shorter meetings,

less bureaucracy and more rides. In 2017, we had 36-rides scheduled and in 2018, 59-rides including two new rides created during Laconia

Motorcycle Week for National HOG and Harley-Davidson-Milwaukee. We weren’t able to do every ride on the schedule due to weather.

But, I think we made a huge dent in “Let’s Ride!” My thanks go to each of the 31-Road Captains, who contributed time and effort to make this

happen. We put a lot of miles on our aggregate odometers – even Thom Cady!

Another objective was to increase Member participation in WinniHOG events and, I believe, we’ve seen that come to fruition. In addition to

significant Member attendance in our monthly Chapter meetings, we’ve seen record levels of volunteers at the 9-day hospitality desk at LHD,

HOG pin stop and Tower Hill Hillclimb during Motorcycle Week and, just recently, the Altrusa Tree event with record participation and dona-

tions. A big thank you goes to Dave Broughton, who, in his last year as Activities Director, has been relentless in keeping us always excitedly

looking forward to the next event!

I also wanted to try to stay more “in touch” with our Membership. During the last two years, you’ve probably thought more than once: “Not

another email from Ron! – Doesn’t he have something better to do?” And, along those lines, my thanks go to Barb Harris, Hog Tales editor,

who is always able to extract content from sometimes-reluctant officers and committees and Lana Dearborn, Public Relations Officer, for

keeping our Facebook page and dealership showcase up-to-date and interesting as I attempted to keep our webpage current. We are totally

“in the 21st Century”, at least from a technology perspective.

There’s so much more to recount. I do want to acknowledge before I close that we lost two of our own of late – Judi

Dunlap (see tribute in this issue) and John Lashnits, both of whom were highly valued Members and will be added to

our memorial plaque in the Spring.

Finally, I want to thank you, the Membership, for all of your support and giving me the opportunity to be your Direc-

tor for the past two years. As one chapter closes, another opens, and I want to wish Mike Gregory great success as

your new Director.

My best wishes to each of you for a safe holiday season and a Happy, Healthy

and trouble-free 2019—Ron

John P. Lashnits JANUARY 15, 1946 ~ DECEMBER 6, 2018 (AGE 72)

Alton Bay, NH - John Peter Lashnits of Alton Bay, NH, who grew up and lived most of his life in Connecticut, passed peacefully at age 72 on December 6, 2018 while surrounded by his two daughters and his wife. Some of his interests included flying, metalworking, woodworking, photography and riding his motorcycle. John was a member of our Chapter since 2016.

For the Memorial Plaque – from Fran Maineri “I am currently having our Memorial Honor Roll plaque updated with John Lashnits’ and Judi Dunlap’s name and membership dates. The chapter will honor each of these dear members in the spring (probably after the April meeting) at our memorial bench with a celebration of their lives and specifically the contributions that they made to our chapter. I encourage anyone that can share a memory will come forward and say a few words.”

There are no words to express the great loss this is for not only our Chapter but the world. Judi was the most kind, generous

and loving person I have had the honor to love in my lifetime. There is not a person I know that did not love Judi upon meeting

her. She just made you feel special and important. Even in the later months, Judi was always positive and had a smile while

showing concern about others. To say she was a “Class Act” is putting it mildly. She was the definition of “Class Act”. Our

Chapter owes a great deal to the dedication and love Judi has given over the years. From successful activities to wonderful mer-

chandise options and diligent treasurer duties, Judi did it all. There is so much more but not enough room to share with you all

of the amazing aspects of this wonderful woman but suffice to say that this Chapter is what it is today because of her contribu-

tions and love. And I am who I am today for having been loved by her. I know there are many that feel the same way that I do

and will join me in remembering Judi whenever we need her love and support. RIP my friend – until we meet again!

A beautiful tribute to a beautiful friend from Barb Harris

Historian’s Message By Joe Boucher

Past history submissions have covered the formation of HOG National and our local HOG Chapter, as well as some fun facts concerning the early beginnings of the Harley-Davidson Company. This quarterly submission is a little different. While researching the internet I found an abbreviated summary of the history of the Harley-Davidson Company that I feel all readers will enjoy. It covers the years 1901-2006. History Harley-Davidson is probably the most famous motorcycle manufacturer in the world and is based in the United States in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Even though they consider 1903 as their starting year, they could just as well have considered 1901, because it was then when Bill Harley completed the first blueprint of a Harley engine. In 1903, the same Bill Har-ley and Arthur Davidson revealed their first motorized effort, calling it the first Harley motorcycle. It was a racing bike, built in a wood shed that had Harley-Davidson Motor Company scrawled on it. That same year, Arthur’s brother, William Davidson, joined the company. In a very short time, the first Harley-Davidson dealer opens a shop in Chicago in 1904 and manages to sell three bikes. In true American style, a Harley model wins a 15 mile race in Chicago in 1905 and the same year Harley Motor Company hires its first employee. A year later, they open up a bigger factory and hire five more people. The same year (1906), they produce the first motorcycle catalog in the world. In 1909, Harley-Davidson introduces its first V-twin bike with an 1000cc engine which developed 7 horsepower and three years later the Bar & Shield logo is used for the first time and patented as a trademark. The construction of the main factory building and what was to become the six story headquarters of Harley-Davidson starts in 1912, and this facility is located on Juneau Avenue in Milwaukee. The same year, the company starts exports to Japan and the US dealer network extends to 200 branches. 1913 sees the founding of the Harley-Davidson racing department and one year later the company releases its first sidecars. Harley was becoming very successful, its contract with the U.S. mili-tary being one of the reasons. By the time 1917 came, one third of all Harley-Davidson production went to the U.S. Ar-my and in this same year Harley-Davidson began manufacturing and selling bicycles. After almost 20 years of exist-ence, Harley-Davidson becomes the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world as their models can be purchased in 67 countries worldwide by 1920. Eight years later in 1928, the public sees for the first time two cam engines on the JD series models, which can reach speeds up to 100 mph at the same time providing front wheel brakes for all their bikes. An important moment in Harley history comes in 1929 when the 45 cubic inch V-twin engine (also known as the flathead) is made available on the D model. In 1932, Harley-Davidson introduced the three wheeled Servi-car and it would become Harley’s longest continu-ous production motorcycle, being manufactured up until 1973. In 1936, Harley-Davidson introduces the EL model which had a 61cc engine and was later nicknamed Knucklehead and used a year later (1937) by Joe Petrale to set a new land speed record of 136.183 mph. The same year, the production of the first WL models begin.

In 1941 America joins World War II and Harley stops making civilian bikes and focuses all of its efforts on vehicles for the military. During the second World War which ends in 1945 Harley made a lot of new models for the army, but the most successful army model was the WLA, which Harley produced almost 90,000 units. In 1946 the 45ci flathead WR racing motorcycle is introduced and one year Jimmy Chann wins the first of three consecutive AMA Grand National Championships. 1953 means that Harley-Davidson celebrates its 50

th anniversary and in 1957 they introduce the

Sportster, one of the Harley legends. A little known fact, Harley-Davidson also produced a scooter called Topper in 1960, but that was their last attempt in this regard. The same year, the company buys half of Aeronatica-Macchi, which will later produce single cylinder bikes. In 1961 the Sprint model is introduced and in 1962 Harley buys 60% of Tomahawk Boat Manufacturing Company and starts making fiberglass components there. The first FL available with electric start is the Electra-Glide in 1965 and the Sportster model also receives an electric starter. Historian Report Continued on back cover (page 12)

Pub Mania Recap-Will Swart

A little over 3 years ago I sat down with Allan Beetle owner of Patrick’s Pub about joining in this annual

event that benefits the Greater Lakes Region Children’s auction. Little did I know that he was interviewing me to see if we would be a fit into this annual event. He told me then that if you could get 24 people to sit on a barstool and raise $100 per person that would be a phenomenal start. Having only 12 weeks to do this we took on the challenge and we were off and running.

Having really no clue what all we were getting ourselves into with the assistance of some amazing people in 2016, our first year, we raised a little over $13,600 which in my mind was astonishing. Going into year 2 we had put together another amazing team of fundraisers and along with our Milwaukee Road Trip raf-fle we were able to raise $15,300 for this awesome charity.

This year, I have to tell you was another amazing year not only for our team, but pub mania and the Children’s Auction. Our team captains along with the team at LHD worked this year on coming up with ideas on what we could do to further our team’s impact on this great charity and community that we live and work in. We had to up our game which led us to the idea of purchasing a motorcycle and raffling it off. The net pro-ceeds from the raffle of the 2018 Anniversary Street Glide was a success and provided a tremendous boost in our fundraising efforts. Although significant not our only fundraising effort………. Whether it was joining us for one of our bingo bike nights, dropping a buck or two in the bucket when we were grilling out, buying one of the Christmas balls we sell and any of the other fundraising efforts we’ve done over the past year every dollar counts……. Just to give you an idea 1/3 of the money we raised happens dollar by dollar. Although everyone and every dollar counts, I have to give a special recognition to a handful of people who took this over the top.

Our top 3 barstool fundraisers, Robin Watson with $1883, Dave Broughton with $1200 and Julie Klinger with $850. Well done and thank you!

While fundraising is a key to the event, team participation is another and I want to give some special

recognition to the following…. Mr and Mrs Clause aka Joe and Donna Monti not only for winning best Santa outfit but we also found out that Mrs Clause is a gambler and won the 50/50 that hour which went right to our team, Craig Hodsdon for winning ugly sweater contest with a sweater made by Judi Dunlap, to Rick Bassett’s rendition of Winter Wonderland during Scary Oke…… I also heard that Mike Egeler won $50 for participation in naughty hour…. I’d have to wonder what he was participating in….Whether it was singing, dancing or dressing up definitely a bunch of people steppin up and having a good time.

As many of you know from either being involved with this event or stopping by to support the team, this

event doesn’t just “happen”. Our team captains are really the glue that holds all of this together. Anna and Lyndsey along with myself handle a lot of the behind the scenes things, but I think we can all agree who has made all of this happen for 2018, my wife Kathy. I asked her to help us out this year and she took the bull by the horns. I think we would all agree that she played a huge role in making this year’s event so suc-cessful…. I’m grateful and thank you for all you have done this year.

Every year the pub mania group puts together a theme song for the event. This year’s theme song was “Everyday People”. He spoke of how 744 everyday people (31 teams of 24 ppl) come together to pull off this amazing event. I would have to say that its 744 everyday people doing extraordinary things. I say this as these everyday people raised over $353k dollars. If you think about that for a moment that’s average of $11,400 per team raised. Now all of you know that we are not “average” in this group, we constantly push the envelope in all that we do….and that’s why I’m excited to share with you that this year’s contribution from the

Laconia Harley Iron Butts was $29,995!

Again thank you for all you have done to contribute to the success of this unbelievable fundraiser to benefit the children of the lakes region.

Historian Report Continued from Page 8 In 1969 Harley-Davidson and American Machine and Foundry Company (AMF) merge and a few years later (1971) the FX 1200 Super Glide is introduced, a combination between the XL and the FL series. In the same year, the first Harley-Davidson snowmo-bile is produced and a year later the XR-750 is made available. In 1977, Harley presents to the public the FXS Low Rider, a unique vehicle which had drag style handlebars and a very low position of the seat. FXEF Fat Bob is introduced in 1979, a bike nick-named Fat because of its dual gas tanks and in 1980 another model called FXWG Wide Glide is released. In 1982 it is the perfect time for a new model and the FXR/FXRS Super Glide II is released. In 1983 the Harley Owners Group is founded. This club is for all Harley-Davidson bike owners around the world and grows extremely quick, reaching 90,000 members in just six years. 1984 is an important year in Harley history as they unveil a new engine, the 1340cc V Evolution present at that time on five of their models. This is the result of 7 years of development, but one model equipped with this engine stands out, the Softail. Two years later, Sof-tail is updated and dubbed the Heritage Softail at the same time the company is listed on the American Stock Exchange. In 1987, Harley-Davidson starts the Buy Back Program for the XLH 883 Sportster model. Through this program, those who owned such a model could trade it in after two years for its full value, or they could choose a FL or FX model. The FLSTF Fat Boy is introduced in 1990 and in 1991 the Dyna line of motorcycles makes its debut with the FXDB Dyna Glide Sturgis. In 1993, 90 years of Harley-Davidson history are celebrated by 100,000 people riding in a parade in Milwaukee. This event is called the Family Reunion. One year after their 90th anniversary, in 1994, Harley enters Superbike racing as they introduce the VR1000, and two years later (1996) a new Parts and Accessories Distribution Center is opened in Franklin, Wisconsin, a place which will be used later on to store all inventory. This new facility has over 250,000 square feet of space. At Harley’s 95th Anniversary (1998) even more bikers show up, some 140,000 and they ride the streets of Milwaukee as a tribute to the manufacturer. The same year, Harley-Davidson opens its first operation outside the U.S., in Manaus, Brazil. The first bike pre-sented in the new century (2000) is the FXSTD Softail Deuce and fuel injection is unveiled on the 2001 Softail line. In 2001 the VRSCA V-Rod is presented, a bike inspired by the VR-1000 motorcycle and one year later (2002) the Buell Firebolt makes its way onto the stage. In 2003, Harley celebrates 100 years of existence and the city of Milwaukee welcomes more than 250,000 people as the final stop of the Open Road Tour. The latest model from Harley-Davidson is the FLHZ/1 Street Glide, a lower profile touring motorcycle debuts in 2006. In the same year Beijing Feng Huo Lun becomes the first authorized Harley dealer in China.
