Menstrual Disorders Menstrual disorders may be a sign of a gynaecological condition, though they are usually not serious. Common disorders include an absence of periods (amenorrhoea), infrequent periods (oligomenorrhoea), painful periods (dysmenorrhoea), heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premature ovarian failure (POF). Amenorrhoea can be either primary or secondary and has several possible causes. The underlying cause will determine whether lifestyle changes alone are recommended, or if medical intervention is indicated. Oligomenorrhoea can be a symptom of an underlying condition (e.g. polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS) and treatment will be tailored to the cause. Dysmenorrhoea and menorrhagia may be due to infection, endometriosis, fibroids, cysts or hormone imbalances, and the treatment is therefore offered accordingly. PMS symptoms may improve with diet or lifestyle changes only or with medical intervention depending on the severity. Women with POF may be helped by a combination of hormone replacement therapy according to their fertility plans and general wellbeing. MANCHESTER LONDON CHESHIRE MENSTRUAL 16/12/11 12:10 Page 1

GyneHealth offer patients a unique, integrated approach that combines conventional medicine with complementarycare such as nutritional advice, acupuncture, reflexology andcounselling. We aim to provide the highest quality of careand our dedicated team of specialist practitioners worktogether to provide individually tailored treatments for everystep of your journey.

Nutritional Therapy

Our bodies are ultimately made of the foods we eat andevery function requires certain nutrients, including protein, essential fats, vitamins and minerals. Nutritional therapistscan identify potential imbalances and how these contribute to symptoms.

Dietary changes and nutritional supplements associated with conventional therapy can play an important role in thetreatment of period problems. Studies suggest that a diet richin foods containing particular antioxidants, or with naturalanti-inflammatory properties may have a therapeutic effect, whether alone or in combination with other interventions.

Our team of nutritional therapists will develop a personalisednutrition plan rather than giving ‘one size fits all’ dietaryadvice, allowing them to address nutritional imbalances andmanage the condition appropriately.

Acupuncture

Research suggests acupuncture may reduce PMS symptomsby affecting the levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin(which affects mood, appetite and sleep) and endorphins(the body’s natural pain killers), both chemicals which canproduce feelings of wellbeing and promote relaxation.

There is also a growing body of evidence to support thevalue of acupuncture in the treatment of dysmenorrhoea, dysfunctional uterine bleeding and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Chronic pain can often be accompanied by increased stress, anxiety and depression. Acupuncture can promoterelaxation and alter the brain’s mood chemistry and stimulateproduction of the body’s natural painkiller.
