El año pasado durante uno de los coloquios del Festival, un director habló de algo que me hizo reflexionar: el silencio como antesala de la violencia. Existen silencios que hablan, pero otros son el lugar donde crece el miedo, el miedo que nos separa de los demás, el que busca culpables armado de ver-dades, que alimenta los prejuicios, que transforma la comunicación en un ruido ensordecedor hasta que es ya demasiado tarde, y el miedo se disfraza de ira; entonces todos enmudecemos.

Qué importante romper los silencios, con el compro-miso que esto conlleva, el de escuchar y el de ser escuchado, porque comunicarnos es lo único que nos une…Quizás esta crisis nos esté haciendo personas más presentes en nuestro entorno, en este mundo que sentimos cambiar minuto a minuto y es que nunca antes estuvimos tan conectados ni fuimos tan con-scientes los unos de los otros, para lo bueno y para lo malo. Sin duda esto marca el comienzo de una nueva conciencia como individuos locales, pero también globales, y como tal, partícipes de un gran cambio sin fronteras; ahora bien, podemos optar a que el mundo nos cambie a nosotros, o cambiar nosotros para cam-biar el mundo.

Cuando las plazas del mundo árabe fueron con-scientes de que había una esperanza que les unía a todos, cuando rompieron el miedo en sus calles, lograron derribar décadas de opresión y romper el silencio cómplice de la política internacional. Pero también fueron los millones de personas que pudieron vivirlo en directo en sus televisores, sus ordenadores, sus móviles,… partícipes distantes de este triunfo de las revueltas árabes, en la medida que ser con-scientes de una realidad nos hace partícipes y nos compromete con ella.

En Amal no creemos que el mundo pueda cambiar a nadie si antes no cambiamos nosotros mismos. Creemos que a través del cine como lenguaje univer-sal y del diálogo directo con el mundo árabe daremos un primer paso para comunicarnos y ser conscientes de que a las personas nos unen los mismos deseos y de que el miedo no es más que silencio…Unirnos a través del diálogo, de la comunicación entre perso-nas. Por eso quiero agradecer a todas las personas que hacen este Festival posible, desde cineastas, transportistas, voluntarios, instituciones, amigos, pero, sobre todo, al público del Festival, porque su presencia supuso y supone el inicio de un cambio, un compromiso personal hacia el mundo árabe; con ello habrán comenzado a cambiar el mundo que unos y otros compartimos.

Last year during one of the Festival’s debates, a director spoke of something that made me think: silence as the prelude to violence. There are silences that speak, but others are the places where fear grows, fear that separates us from the rest, which looks for culprits armed with truths, that feeds prejudice, transforms commu-nication into deafening noise until it is too late and fear dresses up as ire; then we all become silent.

It is important to break the silence, with the commitment that this implies, to listen and to be listened, because communicating with each other is the only thing that unites us…Maybe this crises is making us become more present in our environment, in this world which we can feel change minute by minute and to which we have never before been so connected or been so aware of each other, for the good and bad. Without a doubt this marks the beginning of a new consciousness as local individuals who are also global, and as such, who participate in great change without frontiers; but we can opt for the world changing us or change ourselves to change the world.

When the squares of the Arab world became aware that there was hope that united them all, when they broke the fear in their streets, they managed to bring down decades of oppression and break the conspiracy of silence of inter-national politics. But it was also the millions of people that were able to experience it live on the television sets, their computers, their mo-biles,…who participated in this success of the Arab revolts, in the measure that being aware of a reality makes us participate and engage in it.

In Amal we don’t believe that the world can change a person if before we don’t change our-selves. We believe that through the universal language of cinema and the direct dialogue with the Arab world we take a first step to establish communications between different peoples. This is why I want to express my thanks to all those people who make this Festival possible, film makers, couriers, voluntary workers, institu-tions, friends,…but above all, the Festival’s public, because their presence has meant and means the beginning of change, a personal promise to the Arab world; with this they have started to change the world that all of us share.

O ano pasado durante un dos coloquios do Festival, un director falou de algo que fíxome reflexionar: o silencio como antesala da violencia. Existen silencios que falan, pero outros son o lugar onde crece o medo, o medo que nos separa dos demais, o que busca culpables armado de ver-dades, que alimenta os prexuízos, que transforma a comunicación nun ruído ensordecedor ata que é xa demasiado tarde, e o medo disfrázase de ira; entón todos enmudecemos.

Que importante romper os silencios, co compro-miso que isto leva, o de escoitar e o de ser escoita-do, porque comunicarnos é o único que nos une...Quizais esta crise estéanos facendo persoas máis presentes na nosa contorna, neste mundo que sentimos cambiar minuto a minuto e é que nunca antes estivemos tan conectados nin fomos tan conscientes os uns dos outros, para o bo e para o malo. Sen dúbida isto marca o comezo dunha nova conciencia como individuos locais, pero tamén globais, e como tal, participes dun gran cambio sen fronteiras; agora ben, podemos optar a que o mundo cambienos a nós, ou cambiar nós para cambiar o mundo.

Cando as prazas do mundo árabe foron con-scientes de que había unha esperanza que lles unía a todos, cando romperon o medo nas súas rúas, lograron derrubar décadas de opresión e romper o silencio cómplice da política internacio-nal. Pero tamén foron os millóns de persoas que puideron vivilo en directo nos seus televisores, os seus computadores, os seus móbiles, partícipes distantes deste triunfo das revoltas árabes, na medida que ser conscientes dunha realidade fainos participes e comprométenos con ela.

En Amal non cremos que o mundo poida cambiar a ninguén se antes non cambiamos nós mesmos. Cremos que a través do cine como linguaxe univer-sal e do diálogo directo co mundo árabe daremos un primeiro paso para comunicarnos e ser con-scientes de que ás persoas únennos os mesmos desexos e de que o medo non é máis que silencio. Unirnos a través do diálogo, da comunicación entre persoas. Por iso quero agradecer a todas as per-soas que fan este Festival posible, desde cineas-tas, transportistas, voluntarios, institucións, amigos, pero, sobre todo, ao público do Festival, porque a súa presenza supuxo e supón o inicio dun cambio, un compromiso persoal cara ao mundo árabe; con iso comezaría a cambiar o mundo que uns e outros compartimos.

Agradezco a todo el equipo del Festival Amal, en especial a su director, Ghaleb Jaber Martínez, mi nombramiento como Presidente de Honor de un certa-men de referencia a nivel internacional. Comparto con Amal el deseo de acercar culturas por la vía pacífica, de enseñar al mundo que todas las personas tienen derecho a vivir en paz y de concienciar de la impor-tancia de la educación como camino hacia el enten-dimiento de los pueblos.

Amal nace con la ambición de aportar su grano de arena a ese acercamiento entre culturas, entre pueb-los, en definitiva, entre las gentes de Oriente y Occi-dente, con un vehículo muy acertado, el cine. Me enor-gullece esta mención porque se trata de un certamen que nace con el mismo objetivo que yo mismo llevo años persiguiendo. La intención de Amal, me recuerda a la de La Western-Eastern Divan Orchestra, que surgió en 1999 y que fundé junto al fallecido Edward Said. Una orquesta integrada por jóvenes palestinos, israelíes y españoles, que surgió como un proyecto de convivencia y de educación con la música y por la música, gracias al que jóvenes de diferentes culturas se juntan para compartir su gusto común por la músi-ca, ofreciendo conciertos por y para todo el mundo.

Tras estos nueve años de trayectoria Amal sigue organizando cada año nuevas actividades e iniciativas para que el público tenga una visión, lo más amplia posible, del mundo árabe. Considero que el cine es una buena herramienta para mostrarnos a todos las costumbres, la historia, la economía, la política… en definitiva, la forma de vida de todos los pueblos del mundo en general, y de Oriente Medio en particular, y Amal es el vehículo perfecto que nos permite viajar hasta allí a través de los cinco sentidos.

Por todo ello agradezco la labor del Festival Amal en su defensa del mundo árabe y me siento muy feliz por formar parte de un certamen de contrastada categoría.

I am grateful to all the team at the Amal Festival and, in particular, to its director Ghaleb Jaber Martinez, for my appointment as Presi-dent of Honour for an event which is an interna-tional reference. I share with Amal the desire to bring different cultures closer in a peaceful man-ner, to show the world that we all have a right to live in peace and I underline the importance of education as a path to understanding between peoples.

Amal is born with the ambition of adding its grain of sand to bringing cultures and peoples closer, in one word, bringing East and West together with a very apt vehicle, cinema. I am proud of this mention because the event is born with the same objective that I have pursued for years. Amal’s objectives remind me of those held by the Western-Eastern Divan Orchestra, created in 1999, and which I co-founded with the late Edward Said. An orchestra integrated by Israelis, Palestinians and Spaniards, which was born as a residential and educational retreat project related to music and for music, thanks to which young people from different cultures met to share a common love, offering concerts by and for all the world.

After these nine years of life Amal keeps orga-nising each year different activities and initia-tives so the public may enjoy the widest vision possible of the Arab world. I consider that cinema is an important tool to show customs, history, economy, politics…in other words, the way of life of all types of cultures in general, and of Middle Eastern cultures in particular; Amal is the perfect vehicle that enables us to travel there with all five senses.

For all the above I am grateful to the Amal Festival for their defence of the Arab world and am happy to be a part of an event with such a proven category

Amal es una palabra que significa esperanza. Bajo ese nombre nació en 2003 el Festival Internacional de Cine EuroÁrabe Amal, un evento único organizado por la Fundación Araguaney-Puente de Culturas. Respaldado por un amplio público nacional e internacional, el Festival tiene como finalidad aproximarnos a la realidad social y cultural árabe utilizando un idioma universal: el cine.

El Festival Internacional de Cine EuroÁrabe Amal es un espacio libre y abierto que integra cine europeo y árabe, producido y coproducido, promoviendo el diálogo intercultural. En Amal, profesionales del séptimo arte y espectadores crean, comparten y revisan puntos de vista diferentes sobre el mundo árabe y sus relaciones con el resto del mundo, particularmente Europa.

La novena edición de Amal exhibió entre el 24 y el 29 de Octubre de 2011 una selección heterogénea de 37 películas procedentes de 24 países diferentes, árabes y no árabes, bajo el lema “Pan, cine y libertad”. Cortometrajes y largometrajes ofrecieron una instantánea de la sociedad árabe actual, una reflexión sobre un mundo complejo que reclama profundos cambios sociales, políticos y culturales. La filosofía de Amal va más allá de las salas de cine. Fueron muchas las actividades que se llevaron a cabo en Santiago de Compostela y en la red para emocionarnos y descubrirnos la riqueza del mundo árabe: semana gastronómica, talleres de cocina, danza y caligrafía, exposición de carteles, Dar no Cravo Amal, campaña informativa Amal Informa, ciclos de cine infantil y experimental, concurso de cortos online Amal Express, concierto inaugural de Le Trio Joubran… un valioso abanico de actividades originales y divertidas que abordaron otras facetas de la cultura árabe.

Durante una semana, espectadores, directores, actores, productores, guionistas y periodistas de todo el mundo acudieron a Santiago de Compostela y al Festival Amal. Más de cinco mil personas de todas las edades y de distintas nacionalidades, aficionados y profesionales, mostraron su apoyo a un evento que demuestra que la tolerancia y el saber son los pilares del entendimiento entre los pueblos, y que la convivencia es posible.

Podemos afirmar que el Festival ha crecido y ha madurado a lo largo de estos años, hasta el punto de constituirse como un referente para todas aquellas personas interesadas en sumergirse en la cultura árabe en particular y en otras culturas europeas en general. Demostrado queda después de las nueve ediciones, las cuales han tenido una muy buena acogida por parte del público y una gran difusión en los medios de comunicación nacionales e internacionales. Y es que el cine es un espacio ideal para fomentar encuentros culturales o sociales, lejos de enfrentamientos raciales, políticos, religiosos o ideológicos.

Amal is a Word that means hope. Under this name the International EuroArab Film Festival Amal was born in 2003, a unique event organised by the Arauganey – Bridge between Cultures Foundation. Backed by a strong national and international public, the Festival has the objective of bringing us closer to Arab social and cultural reality using a universal language: film

The International EuroArab Film Festival Amal is an open space of freedom which integrates European and Arab films, produced and coproduced, promoting intercultural dialogue. In Amal, seventh art professionals and spectators create, share and revise different points of view on the Arab world and its relationships with the rest of the world, particularly Europe.

The Ninth Edition of Amal screened from the 24th to the 29th of October 2011, a varied selection of 37 films from 24 different countries, Arab and non Arab, under the theme “Bread, Films and Freedom”. Shorts and feature length films which offered a picture of current Arab society, a reflection on a complex world that claims for profound social, political and cultural changes.

Amal’s philosophy transcends film theatres. Many activities took place in Santiago de Compostela and on the web which moved us and uncovered a rich Arab world: gastronomic week; cookery, dance and calligraphy workshops; poster exhibition; the Amal Pub Quiz; campaign “Amal Informs”; Children’s Film Cycle; Experimental Film Cycle; online short film competition Amal Express; Opening concert by Le Trio Joubran…a wide range of original and fun activities that looked into other aspects of Arab culture.

During one week, spectators, directors, actors, producers, scriptwriters and international journalists visited Santiago de Compostela and the Amal Festival. More than 5.000 people of all ages and different nationalities, keen theatre goers and film professionals, showed their support for an event that proves that tolerance and knowledge are the pillars of understanding between different people and that coexistence is possible.

We can state, that the Festival has grown and matured in these last few years, and has become a reference for all those interested in submerging themselves in Arab culture in particular and other European cultures in general. After nine editions the Festival has proven this with the support of its public and wide international and national media coverage. Film is an ideal space to encourage cultural and social meeting points, far from racial, political, religious and ideological confrontations.

El Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe, Amal, nace con el objetivo de ofrecer a sus espectadores una visión de la cultura árabe en general, a través de una amplia selección de películas. Amal pretende aportar una mirada rigurosa sobre la situación de los habitantes de Oriente Medio, tratando de combatir la imagen negativa que en muchas ocasiones se ofrece del mundo árabe. Amal ofrece la posibilidad de conocer historias reales, contadas por los propios protagonistas, que nos acercan a la cultura, modos de vida, preocupaciones y tradiciones del mundo árabe. El Festival quiere cambiar la idea que tiene la sociedad occidental sobre el mundo árabe con ejemplos palpables - a través del cine, la gastronomía, la música…empleando el cine y otros tipos de arte como lenguaje común a todas las gentes y como vehículo de transmisión de información y expresión sobre diferentes culturas. El evento establece un canal constante de comunicación entre Oriente Medio y Occidente.

El Festival también tiene como objetivo mejorar los intercambios entre profesionales y favorecer la coproducción entre España y los países árabes. Quiere seguir siendo un punto de encuentro profesional para impulsar la industria cinematográfica. Esto lo está consiguiendo gracias a los coloquios en los que se ponen ideas en común, a los intercambios profesionales que se producen a lo largo del evento y al fomento de las coproducciones. El Festival apuesta por la colaboración entre profesionales y la cooperación cultural como camino para conseguir la tolerancia.

Amal es un Festival que favorece la interculturalidad y la movilidad de los productos cinematográficos entre industrias de los diferentes países participantes. El Festival es la puerta de acceso a otros mercados para muchas de las producciones que participan en el evento. Abre un camino para el desarrollo del audiovisual árabe y del español y europeo en coproducción, asociación e intercambio, potenciando el desarrollo de productos de gran calidad.

El Festival fomenta la creatividad y la producción, así como la difusión de nuevos talentos, tanto gallegos como nacionales e internacionales, gracias a la iniciativa Amal Express que se lleva a cabo a lo largo de la semana oficial del Festival. Amal Express ayuda a la difusión de los trabajos de jóvenes creadores gallegos, nacionales e internacionales ya que se benefician del considerable tráfico recibido por la página web del Festival de profesionales del territorio español y profesionales de nivel internacional tanto de países árabes como del resto de Europa.

Amal permite que un cine de producción independiente, que la mayoría de veces no llega a exhibirse por falta de medios, tenga la oportunidad de llegar a todos y que cualquier persona pueda acceder a títulos poco habituales en las salas comerciales.

Han sido muchos los cineastas, actores, guioni-stas y expertos en cine procedentes de todo el mundo que han viajado a Santiago de Compos-tela para asistir al Festival. El equipo del Festival Amal trabaja todos los días del año para hacer de Santiago un punto de referencia para el sector cinematográfico, más allá de fronteras nacionales, y para estrechar lazos entre las distintas civiliza-ciones.

El Festival fomenta el diálogo. Ofrece un conjunto de miradas complejas y multiformes sobre una re-alidad cambiante, luchando contra estereotipos, tabúes, imágenes deformadas y parciales. Amal es además una vía de expresión privilegiada para los directores, ya que constituye un espacio libre en el que ellos puedan compartir directamente con el público, cada vez más curioso por conocer su tradición, sus costumbres y sus reivindicaciones. En este sentido, el valor social del festival, de un lado como del otro del mediterráneo, es incontest-able.

El Festival apuesta por la cooperación con enti-dades públicas y privadas, personas, hombres o mujeres, aficionados o profesionales… En la fa-milia Amal cabemos todas y todos. Es su esfuerzo por integrar ideas originales y nuevos colabora-dores lo que le permite seguir impulsando la in-dustria cinematográfica, dinamizar el intercambio cultural y promover el desarrollo de proyectos euroÁrabes. Así, año tras año y con la ayuda de todos, el Festival se compromete a renovar su pro-puesta y a crecer a nivel local, nacional e interna-cional.

La labor de Amal es ardua pero merece la pena. Estrechando lazos con el mundo, no perdemos la esperanza de contribuir social y culturalmente a nuestra sociedad.

INTRODUCCIÓN/ OBJETIVOS

The International EuroArab Film Festival Amal is created with the objective of offering to its viewers a vision of Arab culture in general thanks to a wide selection of Films. Amal intends to observe in a rigorous manner the situation of the inhabitants of the Middle East, trying to challenge the negative image of the Arab world that is offered many times. Amal offers the possibility of seeing real stories, told by their own participants, which bring us nearer to Arab culture, way of life, issues and traditions. The Festival wants to challenge the idea that western society has of the Arab world with real examples – thanks to film, gastronomy, music…using film and other art forms as common language and as a vehicle to transmit information and expressions of different cultures. The event offers a constant communications channel between the Middle East and the West.

The Festival also has as objective increasing the exchange between professionals and coproduction between Spain and the Arab countries. It wants to continue to be a meeting point for professionals to encourage the film industry. It is managing to do so thanks to the dialogue in which ideas are shared, the exchange between professionals that takes place during the event and the encouragement of co-productions. The Festival encourages collaboration between professionals and cultural cooperation as a path towards tolerance.

Amal is a Festival which favours inter-cultural exchange and the mobility of film products between the industries of the different participating countries. The Festival is the door to access other markets for many of the productions that participate in the event. It opens a path to develop Spanish, European and Arab audio-visual product in coproduction, association and exchange, helping to develop high quality products.The Festival helps creativity and production as well as helps to bring to light new talent, Galician, national and international, thanks to the initiative Amal Express that takes place during the Festival’s official week. Amal Express helps discover the work of young Galician, national and international talent, who benefit from the considerable traffic received by the Festival’s webpage on behalf of professionals from the Spanish territory as well as international professionals from the Middle East and the rest of Europe.

Amal permits that a type of independent film production, which the majority of times is not exhibited due to lack of means, have the opportunity to reach everyone and that all can access titles which are never usually screened in commercial film venues.

Many are the directors, actors, script-writers and film experts from all over the world who have travelled to Santiago de Compostela to participate in the Festival. The Amal Festival’s team works on a daily basis to make Santiago a reference point for the film sector, transcending national frontiers to close ties with different civilizations.

The Festival encourages dialogue. It offers different and complex points of view of a changing reality, fighting against stereotypes, taboos, deformed and partial images. Amal is also a privileged means of expression for directors, as it constitutes a free space in which they can share directly with the public, increasingly curious about their traditions, customs and vindications. In this sense, the social value of the Festival on both sides of the Mediterranean is unchallengeable.

The Festival counts on the cooperation of public and private entities, people, men and women, professionals and non-professionals…There is room for all in the Amal family. Its effort to integrate new original ideas and collaborations is what ensures that it keeps fuelling the film industry, encouraging cultural exchange and promoting the development of EuroArab productions. Year after year, with the help of all, the Festival has taken on the challenge of renovating its proposals and growing at a local, national and international level.

Amal is a hard challenge, but one that compensates the effort. Closing ties with the rest of the world we don’t lose the hope of socially and culturally contributing to our society.

Fantasía, emoción, crítica, denun-cia. El cine puede representar verdades complejas y opuestas, llevarnos a la risa o al llanto, influir como ningún otro medio sobre nuestros pensamientos y nuestros actos. En Amal, a través de la mirada, la voz y la mano de muchos directores, nos acercamos a un mundo que sufre injusticias pero que lucha por su libertad y cuyo cine es más rico y vivo que nunca.

En esta novena edición del Festival Amal, 37 películas de distintos formatos y géneros se proyectaron durante una semana. El Festival estuvo presente en toda la comunidad gal-lega y difundió parte de su programación on-line, llegando así a todos los continentes.

Producciones que nos hicieron sentir de cer-ca una cultura con la que compartimos mu-chos aspectos de nuestras vidas.

In Amal, through the eyes, voice and hand of many directors, we approach a world which suffers injustice but whose inhabitants fight for freedom and whose cinema is richer and more alive than ever. In this ninth Edition of the Amal Festival, 37 films of different formats and genres were projected during one week. The Festival was present in the whole of Galicia and also screened part of its content online, thus reaching all continents.

Productions which made us feel closer to a culture with which we share many aspects of our lives.

El conductor del autobús, que está secretamente enamorado de Amal, hace todo lo posible para protegerla, pero ella no sabe nada.

This slice-of-life tale takes place during three days in the life of 18 year-old Amal. The first day we see Amal at her delivery job traveling the streets of Cairo on a battered scooter between homes and businesses. During one of these deliveries the scooter is stolen and her boss fires her. A bus driver, who is secretly in love with Amal, does all he can to protect her although she doesn’t know a thing.

Hebron is a city of conflict and hate. It’s one of the Israeli West Bank settlements, the only one right in the heart of a Palestinian city. The city centre is now witness to a war between neighbours where the main goals are to conquer one more metre of the city, keep the enemy at bay or simply stand one’s own ground.

En la actualidad la población sigue sin poder volver a su territorio, ocupado por Marruecos. A day in the refugee camp of Smara, in the city of Tinduf in southern Algeria. This camp was built in the dessert 20 years ago. Its inhabitants escaped through the dessert to take refuge in this inhospitable place provided by neighbouring Algeria. The camp’s population cannot return to its lands, occupied by Morocco.

Aunque Amal privilegie el cine como vínculo con el mundo árabe, otras facetas de su cultura se abordaron en esta novena edición. Una serie de actividades paralelas que cautivaron a un público heterogéneo, dinámico y comprometido.

Although Amal is mainly about films which create ties to the Arab world, other sides of its culture also formed part of this ninth edition. A series of parallel activities delighted a varied, dynamic and engaged public.

El domingo 23 de octubre, Le Trío Joubran inauguró la novena edición del Festival Amal con un concierto gratuito e inolvidable en el Teatro Principal de Santiago de Compostela. El concierto forma parte del Ciclo Musical Ghazal, organizado por la Fundación Araguaney – Puente de Culturas con AGADIC.

Le Trío Joubran, originario de Palestina, es una agrupación compuesta por tres hermanos cuya maestría con el laúd es excepcional. La armonía y la sincronización de la que hicieron gala los músicos con sus temas no dejaron indiferente a un público de casi 400 personas. El Teatro Principal llenó su aforo. On Sunday October 24, Le Trio Joubran inaugurated the ninth edition of the Amal Festival with a free and unforgettable concert at Santiago de Compostela’s Principal Theatre. The concert was part of the Ghazal Musical Cycle organised by the Araguaney – Bridge between Cultures Foundation in collaboration with AGADIC.

Le Trio Joubran, originally from Palestine, is a group formed by three brothers whose mastery of the oud is exceptional. The harmony and synchronisation which the brothers exhibited in the pieces played did not pass unnoticed to the nearly four hundred people present. The Principal Theatre was completely packed.

Compartir cine y fomentar la comprensión del mundo árabe con las nuevas generaciones es uno de los compromisos del Festival Amal. Por tercer año consecutivo, 500 niños y niñas de 5º y 6º de primaria del área de Santiago de Compostela fueron convidados a la proyección de varios cortometrajes euroárabes.

Las sesiones, de dos horas de duración, tuvieron lugar del 24 al 28 de octubre y fueron amenizadas por Pablo Suárez, director del Teatro infantil y de objetos “Buratini”. A través de los cortometrajes “Gargouz” y “Mudo”, el alumnado pudo reflexionar por si mismo sobre la actualidad internacional y sobre el valor del respeto hacia los demás. Dos obras maestras que, gracias al apoyo de padres y profesores, agudizaron sus miradas como espectadores y favorecieron su sentido de la tolerancia.

Sharing Films and encouraging the understanding of the Arab world among the new generation is one of the Festival’s objectives. For its third consecutive year, 500 boys and girls from a selection of Santiago de Compostela’s primary schools were invited to the projection of two short EuroArab films.

The two hour sessions took place between the 24th and 28th of October and were hosted by Pablo Suarez, director of children’s theatre of objects “Buratini”. Thanks to short films “Gargouz” and “Mute”, the schoolchildren were made aware of current affairs issues and the value of respect for others. Two works of art, which thanks to the collaboration of parents and teachers, can teach them to look at things and increase their tolerance.

La popularidad del género experimental en las prácticas cinematográficas de Oriente Medio es cada vez mayor y por eso, el Festival Amal 11 incluyó en su programa un ciclo de cine experimental destinado a todos los cinéfilos que querían descubrir las producciones más alternativas, innovadoras y rupturistas del cine euroárabe actual.

Este ciclo contó con la colaboración del CGAC (Santiago de Compostela), del MARCO (Vigo), del MACUF (A Coruña), del Centro Cultural y Sala de Exposición de la Deputación de Ourense Edificio Simeón (Ourense) y del Museo Provincial (Lugo), distintas sedes en las que tuvieron lugar las proyecciones, gratuitas y abiertas, entre el 22 y el 29 de octubre de 2011.

Espectadores de toda la comunidad gallega disfrutaron así de ocho creaciones únicas, miradas atípicas sobre la sociedad árabe.

The popularity of the experimental genre in the film production of the Middle East is becoming increasingly more important and this is why the Amal Festival 11 included in its programme an experimental film cycle for all those film lovers that wanted to discover the most alternative, innovative and edgy productions of current Euro-Arab film.

This cycle was celebrated in conjunction with the CGAC museum (Santiago de Compostela), the MARCO museum (Vigo), the MACUF museum (A Coruña) and the Cultural Centre and Exhibition Space in the Simeon Building (Ourense) as well as the Provincial Museum (Lugo), different venues where the free projections took place between the 22nd and the 29th of October 2011.

Viewers from all Galicia enjoyed the eight unique creations which highlighted unconventional points of view of Arab society.

Durante la Semana Oficial Amal11 la Galería Caroní (Rúa do Vilar, 21) acogió algunos de los carteles favoritos que participaron en el 1er concurso de carteles Amal11. No faltó el cartel ganador e imagen de la novena edición, “Arab Revolt”, de la diseñadora Reem Naeim, con el lema de la novena edición “Pan, cine y libertad”.

También se presentaron los carteles finalistas “Magia de arena”, “Cinematografo Amal”, “Fantasía cinematográfica” y “Mano Universal”. En total, 20 creaciones que nos proporcionaron miradas diferentes e internacionales sobre Amal.

During the Official Amal11 Week, the Caroni Gallery (Rua Vilar, 21) exhibited some of the favourite posters that participated in the 1st Poster Contest Amal11. The winner and image of the ninth edition, “Arab Revolt” by designer Reem Naeim, was on show under the theme “Bread, film and liberty”.

Also exhibited were finalists “Sand Magic”, “Amal Cinematographer”, “Film Fantasy” and “Universal Hand”, a total of 20 pieces on show which provide different international views of Amal.

Fomentar la creatividad y la inno-vación entre jóvenes directores y promover la cultura en soportes digitales a través del cine es otra de las dimensiones de Amal. Por eso, se volvió a convocar el concurso de cortometrajes online Amal Express, una actividad que consiste en la realización y la carga online de un cortometraje en menos de 96 horas.

El lunes 24 de octubre a las 12.00 horas, se publicó en la página web del Festival la palabra clave sobre la que tenían que versar todas las propuestas. En esta ocasión, la palabra elegida fue “Revolución”, en referen-cia a la Primavera Arabe, pero también a los distintos movimientos de protesta internacio-nales que sacudieron la actualidad en 2011. Entre las 18 propuestas y los cortometrajes más votados por los internautas estuvo (S)alas de Revolución, de Carlota Mosquera, quien se llevó el premio; un cortometraje valiente que defiende la necesidad de un cambio global en nuestra sociedad.

Encouraging creativity and innova-tion between young directors and promoting culture in digital formats through cinema is another of Amal’s dimensions. This is why the short film online contest Amal Express was organised once again, an activity which consists in creating and uploading a short film in less than 96 hours.

On Monday October 24 at 12.00h, the key word was published on the Festival’s web-site which provided a theme for the short films. On this occasion the chosen word was “Revolution”, in reference to the Arab Spring, but also to the different international protest movements that have shaken 2011. Among the most voted 18 proposals and shorts was (S)alas de Revolucion (“(R)ooms of Revolution”), by Carlota Mosquera, who was awarded the prize; a courageous short film that defends the need of a global change in our society.

Los talleres Amal se han convertido en una cita permanente del Festival, y en esta novena edición Amal organizó tres amenos cursos de formación dirigidos a todas aquellas personas curiosas por iniciarse a través del movimiento, los sabores y las palabras a una cultura polifacética.

Los talleres de danza tuvieron lugar los sábados 22 y 29 de octubre y estuvieron impartidos por dos reconocidas profesoras y bailarinas de danza oriental: Martha Franco y Mariana Vieira Basso. Ambas supieron compartir su elegancia y su talento con todos los participantes.

Los talleres de cocina fueron organizados a modo de ‘masterclass’ y contaron con un distinguido chef los sábados 22 y 29 de octubre. Quienes estuvieron descubrieron los secretos de preparación de sabrosas recetas como el M´hanmara, el Maklube, el falafel, la salsa tártara o el Fatih de pollo.

Finalmente, el taller de caligrafía árabe, que se organizaba por primera vez en Amal, tuvo lugar el sábado 29 de octubre. Estuvo impartido por el arqueólogo sirio y especialista en caligrafía árabe Ihab Al Oumani y recibió una excelente acogida por parte de todos los participantes.

The Amal Workshops have become a permanent fixture in the Festival, and in this ninth edition Amal organised three varied workshops directed at all those curious to initiate themselves in such a rich culture thanks to movement, tastes and words.

The Amal Dance Workshop took place on Saturday on both the 22nd and 29th of October and was imparted by two well known oriental dance teachers and dancers: Martha Franco and Mariana Vieira Basso. Both shared their elegance and talent with all those participating.

The Amal Cookery Workshop was organised as a “masterclass” and counted on a distinguished chef on both Saturday the 22nd and 29th of October. Those who assisted discovered the secrets to preparing delicious recipes such as M’hanmara, Maklube, falafel, tartar sauce or chicken Fatih.

Finally, the Arab Caligraphy Workshop, which took place for the first time in Amal was imparted on Saturday the 29th of October by Syrian archaeologist and specialist in Arab calligraphy Ihab Al Oumani. The workshop proved to be very popular with Amal participants.

Durante la semana oficial del Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal 2011, distintos establecimientos de ocio y restauración del centro histórico de Santiago de Compostela acogieron numerosos carteles de la campaña Amal Informa. Amal salió al encuentro de habitantes y visitantes a la ciudad, y reveló una año más cuántas similitudes existen entre el mundo árabe y el mundo occidental.

Curiosidades gastronómicas, científicas, históricas, lingüísticas… contribuyeron a enriquecer nuestro conocimiento del mundo árabe, de su legado y de las relaciones que mantenemos con él en nuestra vida cotidiana.

Esta iniciativa contó con el respaldo y la colaboración de bares tan emblemáticos del casco antiguo compostelano, como La Borriquita de Belén, El Puente, Babel, Garigolo, Fraggle Rock, Metate, El Miudo y La Casa das Crechas.

During the International EuroArab International Film Festival Amal 2011 week, different establishments in the old town of Santiago de Compostela hung up numerous posters of the campaign Amal Informs. Amal answered and revealed for a second year running the great number of similarities which exist between the Arab and Western world.

Curiosities, gastronomy, science, history, linguistics…contributed to expand our knowledge of the Arab World, its legacy and the relationships we maintain with it in our daily lives.

This iniciative counted on the collaboration with such well known establishments of Santiago’s old town as La Borriquita de Belén, El Puente, Babel, Garigolo, Fraggle Rock, Metate, El Miudo and La Casa das Crechas.

No escapar de lo más polémico de la cultura árabe es una de las señas de identidad del Festival Amal. La Galería Caroní fue el escenario el jueves 27 de octubre de la celebración de un coloquio conducido por mujeres y centrado en el papel de la mujer en el mundo árabe.

Ana Staton, Directora de la Fundación Araguaney fue la conductora del coloquio. En la cita estaba presente Andreas Horvath, co-director del largometraje “Atracción Árabe” que originó la idea de organizar la mesa redonda. También participaron Rosa Oubiña Solla, Portavoz de Igualdad del Grupo Parlamentario Popular en la Xunta, Francisca Pleguezuelos, Directora de la Fundación Legado Andalusí, Yasmine Al Massri, Presidenta del jurado de Amal y Chelo Loureiro, delegada de CIMA Galicia. Entre todas y todos, mostraron que el cine y la comunicación son vías inigualables para poder superar divergencias, combatir la ignorancia y revalorizar el papel extraordinario de la mujer en todas las sociedades. En este sentido, Amal defiende que los encuentros con profesionales multidisciplinares y el saber dar la palabra son claves para la convivencia.

Confronting difficult issues of Arab culture is one of the signs of identity of the Amal Festival. The Caroni Gallery was the venue on Thursday October 27 of the debate conducted by women and centred on women’s issues in the Arab world.

Ana Staton, Director of the Araguaney Foundation conducted the debate. Andreas Horvath, co-director of the film “Arab Attraction” which originated the idea for the debate, was present, as was Rosa Oubiña Solla, Spokesperson for Equality for the Partido Popular’s Parliamentary Group in regional government, the Xunta de Galicia; Francisca Pleguezuelos, Director of the Foundation Legado Andalusi, Yasmine Al Massri, President of the Amal Jury and Chelo Loureiro, regional representative in Galicia for CIMA.

All proved that film and Communications are viable paths to overcome differences and fight against ignorance, and that they add value to the extraordinary role that women play in all societies. In this sense, Amal defends that meetings between professionals of different disciplines and knowing when to let others talk are key to coexistence.

Amal cumplía así con su deseo de promover el conocimiento del mundo árabe actual de un modo desenfadado.

To learn in a fun way is the objective that guided the pub quiz “Dar no Cravo” Amal Special which took place on Sunday the 23rd at the Ultramarinos Pub. Quite a crowd accepted the challenge and took part in the fun quiz with questions and answers on the Arab world: general culture, art, current affairs…

Amal fulfilled the objective of promoting knowledge of the current Arab World in a fun way.

Todos los años, durante la semana del Festival, se llevan a cabo las jornadas gastronómicas de cocina árabe. A lo largo de esos días, el Restaurante Caney añade a sus platos habituales una carta de comida árabe. Además, el restaurante cambia de look, y todo el ambiente se viste con complementos de Oriente Medio. Lo mejor de la cocina de oriente y occidente Hummus, Falafel, Kibbeh, además de la oferta de cocina tradicional gallega.

El Restaurante Caney acogió durante la Semana Gastronómica de cocina árabe a unos 1.500 comensales.

Every year during the Festival the Arab Cuisine Gastronomic Week takes place. During a few days, the Caney Restaurant adds to its usual menu Arab delicacies. The restaurant also changes its look and decoration to match the Middle Eastern theme. The best of the Middle East and the west on offer: hummus, falafel, Kebbeh and traditional Galician cooking. During this Arab Gastronomic Week, the Caney Restaurant welcomed more than 1.500 people.

Coincidiendo con la celebración de la novena edición del Festival Amal, la Televisión de Galicia incluyó en su programación por segundo año consecutivo el Ciclo de Cine Amal en el que se emitieron 2 largometrajes los sabados 22 y 29 de octubre.

El primer largometraje emitido fue “El Tiempo que Queda” (“The Time That Remains”), dirigido por Elia Suleiman y ganadora del Premio TVG de Amal 2010.

El segundo largometraje programado por la cadena fue “Granadas y Mirra” (“Pomegranates and Myrrh”), dirigido por Najwa Najjar y protagonizado Yasmine Al Massri. Esta pelicula fue la ganadora del Premio TVG de Amal en el año 2009.

Coinciding with the celebration of the ninth Edition of the Amal Festival, Television de Galicia included in its programming for a second year running the Amal Film Cycle which broadcast two films on Saturday the 22nd and the 29th of October.

The first film broadcast was “The Time That Remains” (“El Tiempo que Queda”) directed by Elia Suleiman and winner of the TVG Award in Amal 2010.

The second film programmed by the channel was “Pomegranates and Myrrh” directed by Najwa Jajjar with Yasmine Al Massri. This film was awarded the TVG Prize during the celebration of Amal 2009.

La Fundación Araguaney-Puente de Culturas con la colaboración de AGADIC (Axencia Galega de Industrias Culturais) ha organizado un ciclo de música excepcional, el Ciclo Ghazal. Tres conciertos, uno de los cuales inauguró el Festival Amal 2011. El objetivo del Ciclo Ghazal se centró en todo momento en acercar la música árabe a Santiago de Compostela, permitiendo que tanto santiagueses como turistas de Compostela se empapasen de la música de artistas de reconocido prestigio a nivel internacional. Octubre, Noviembre y Diciembre fueron los meses en los que se celebraron los conciertos. El primero de ellos corrió a cargo de Le Trio Joubran, el domingo 23 de Octubre de 2011, en el Teatro Principal. A continuación, el jueves 17 de Noviembre, la Sala Capitol acogió a Fayçal Salhi Quintet. El broche de oro del Ciclo Ghazal se encargó de ponerlo Moneim Adwan quien, junto a su grupo de músicos deleitaron al público que se acercó hasta el Teatro Principal, el día 8 de Diciembre. Tras una cuidada campaña dirigida no sólo a medios generalistas sino también a especializados, el Ciclo Ghazal tuvo gran repercusión en los medios de comunicación. Prensa escrita, televisión, radio y medios digitales se hicieron eco de todos los conciertos ofrecidos. Se utilizaron además las páginas web tanto de la Fundación Araguaney como del Festival Amal así como las muy activas redes sociales de ambas para publicitar el evento, lo que contribuyó sin duda a su enorme éxito. La ciudad, en las tres ocasiones, se llenó de posters publicitarios de Ghazal. Éstos, distribuidos por lugares estratégicos de la ciudad, como universidades, librerías y centros de ocio, ayudaron a que muchos compostelanos se acercaran a escuchar a estos maestros. Tanto al Teatro Principal como a la Sala Capitol. Además, también se llevó a cabo una cuidada campaña publicitaria en radio.

The Araguaney – Bridge between Cultures Foundation in collaboration with AGADIC (Galician Agency for Cultural Industries) organised an exceptional musical cycle, the Ghazal Cycle. Three concerts, one of which inaugurated the Amal Festival 2011. The objective of the Ghazal Cycle was completely centred on bringing Arab music to the city of Santiago de Compostela, so that locals and tourists from all over the world could enjoy music by well known and prestigious international artists. October, November and December were the months chosen for the concerts. The first was by Le Trio Joubran and took place on Sunday October 23rd at the Teatro Principal. The following one took place on Thursday November 17th when Fayçal Salhi Quintet offered a concert at the Sala Capitol. The Ghazal Cycle finished on a high note with a concert by Moneim Adwan who, along with his group of musicians, delighted the public who assisted at the Teatro Principal on the 8th of December. After a careful campaign directed not only at general media but also at specialised press, the Ghazal Cycle was given ample coverage in all types of publications. Daily press, television, radio and digital media reflected the concerts which took place. The Foundation and Amal Festival webpages as well as all the organisations’ very active social media tools were used to publicise the event, which probably contributed to its enormous success. The city on three occasions was covered in publicity posters of Ghazal. These, distributed in strategic places within the town such as universities, bookshops and similar places encouraged a lot of Compostelanos to go and listen to these masters at the Teatro Principal and the Sala Capitol. There was also a carefully produced publicity campaign on radio.

El mundialmente famoso Trio Joubran es el grupo del momento en la escena de músicas del mundo. Los tres hermanos integrantes del mismo han hecho evolucionar considerablemente la escena musical mundial árabe. Su público es universal y su último trabajo, “AsFAr”, es número uno en ventas en su categoría.

Le Trio Joubran es una agrupación compuesta por tres hermanos que descienden de una familia de músicos especialistas en el laúd desde hace cuatro generaciones. Samir, Wissam y Adnan han convertido el laúd en su pasión, en su forma de vida.

En Santiago demostraron una maestría excepcional con el laúd, en la que la harmonía y la sincronización que muestraron con sus temas no dejó indiferente al numeroso público presente en el Teatro Principal.

Durante su actuación, estuvieron acompañados por la bailarina Libanesa afincada en Paris Nawal Raad. Formada en París y en el Oriente Medio con la conocida figura de Natash Antonello, ha completado su educación con Hassan Ben Gharbia, Souraya Baghdadi y Mohammad Haidar además de Souraya Hilal, Marie El Fajr y Saïda Naït entre otros.

The internationally famous Le Trio Jourbran is the group of the moment on the world music scene. The three brothers who are part of the group have contributed to the evolution of Arab music on a worldwide level. Their public is universal and their last album, “AsFar” is a number 1 bestseller in its category. Le Trio Joubran is a group formed by three brothers who come from a family of specialised oud players who have been musicians for four generations. Samir, Wissam and Adnan have turned this instrument into their passion and their way of life. In Santiago they proved they were exceptional masters of the oud, in both harmony and synchronisation, playing pieces that did not leave any in the numerous public present at the Teatro Principal indifferent. During their performance, they were accompanied by Lebanese dancer based in Paris, Nawal Raad. Trained in Paris and the Middle East with masters such as Natash Antonello, she has completed her education with Hassan Ben Gharbia, Souraya Baghdadi and Mohammad Haidar as well as Souraya Hilal, Marie El Fajr and Saïda Naït among others.

El segundo concierto, el jueves 17 de Noviembre, corrió a cargo de Fayçal Salhi. Nacido en 1979 en Khenchela, una ciudad montañosa al este de Argelia, a centenares de kilómetros de la frontera con Túnez, creció en una atmósfera musical gracias a sus tíos, artistas que se dedicaban a animar las fiestas y celebraciones locales. Una infancia que el adolescente guardó en su corazón durante su exilio en Francia a partir de los 12 años.

Instalado en Besançon, él se define como Franco-Argeliano orgulloso de sus orígenes magrebíes, aunque revindica también su parte francesa.

Compositor de la banda sonora original del largometraje “La Casa Amarilla”, ha recibido numerosos premios entre los que están el premio a Mejor Música en la Mostra, del Festival de Cine Mediterraneo de Valencia. Ha tocado por toda Europa y con reconocidos intérpretes de música árabe como el Trio Joubran entre otros.

The second concert, on Thursday November 17th, was performed by Fayçal Salhi. Born in 1979 in Khenchela, a mountain city east of Algeria and a few hundred kilometres away from the frontier with Tunisia, he grew up in a musical atmosphere thanks to his uncles, artists who played at local parties and celebrations. A childhood that as a 12 year old he kept alive in his heart when forced to seek exile in France. Currently living in Besançon, he defines himself as French-Algerian and is proud of his origins although he also vindicates his French side. Composer of the original motion picture soundtrack of film “The Yellow House”, he has received numerous awards among which is the Best Music Prize at the Mostra of Valencia, the Mediterranean film festival that takes place in this city. He has performed all over Europe and has also played with well known Arab musicians like Le Trio Joubran among others.

El último de los tres conciertos lo protagonizó Moneim Adwan, una de las voces más famosas del mundo árabe, especialista en la canción tradicional palestina, en el registro soufi y en entonar la obra poética de Mahmoud Darwish a través de sus conciertos. Moneim interpretó de forma magistral canciones antiguas de importantes cantantes árabes como Abdel Wahab, Oum Koulsoum y Wadij Essaf durante su concierto en Compostela.

Un demandado artista a nivel internacional, Moneim Adwan nació en Rafah, en la Franja de Gaza, Palestina. Comenzó a cantar canciones tradicionales palestinas y oraciones del profeta Mahoma en su infancia. Este Master en Musicología por la Universidad de Tripoli, ha grabado cuatro discos en Francia. Su última obra, a la que pertenecieron la mayoría de las piezas del concierto ofrecido en Compostela, incluyen composiciones propias y es “un viaje por la poesía de Gaza”. El público gallego pudo disfrutar de canciones inspiradas en la música tradicional de la región de Al-Cham (Siria, Líbano, Jordania, Palestina) y en el repertorio árabe clásico.

The last of the three concerts was staged by Moneim Adwan, one of the most famous voices in the Arab world. This artist is specialised in traditional Palestinian music, soufi and in singing the poetical works of Mahmoud Darwish during his performances. Moneim interpreted in a masterly way classic compositions by Arab singers such as Abdel Wahab, Oum Koulsoum and Wadij Essaf during his concert in Compostela. A well known international performer, Moneim Adwan was born in Rafah, in Gaza, Palestine. He started singing traditional Palestine songs and prayers to the Prophet Mohamed in his childhood. He has a Master’s degree in Musicology by the University of Tripoli and has recorded four records in France. His last recording, to which most of the pieces interpreted in the Compostela concert belong, included his own compositions and is “a voyage through the poetry of Gaza”. The Galician public had the opportunity to enjoy songs inspired by the traditional music of the Al-Cham region (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine) and a classic Arab repertoire. A message of love and tolerance in the middle of war and destruction.

Como es habitual, el jurado de la IX Edición del Festival de Cine Euroárabe Amal estuvo compuesto por reconocidos profesionales de diversos países vinculados al mundo árabe, al cine y a la cultura.  Destaca su carácter multidisciplinar en esta edición de Amal además de su casi total integración por conocidas personalidades del Medio Oriente. El jurado estuvo presidido por la actriz, video artista, bailarina y productora   Yasmine Al Massri, afincada en la actualidad en Estados Unidos y que representa a una nueva generación que ha conseguido no perder ni sus valores ni su cultura.  A  Yasmine la acompañaron  el profesor investigador del IES Haizam Admirah Fernández,  la conocida productora viguesa Montse Besada Vergara, Xefa de Producción Allea de TVG,   Emma Lustres de Vaca Films, el actor, productor y escritor palestino Michael Desante y Najla Said, actriz de cine, comediante y escritora. Entre todos, decidieron quienes recibirían los premios de las distintas categorías basándose en criterios tales como la calidad cinematográfica, su arte reflejando nuevas historias para interesar al público y su capacidad para aportar una nueva mirada.

As is usual, the jury at the IX Edition of the International EuroArab Film Festival Amal was formed by well known professionals from different countries linked to the Arab world, film and culture. It stood out for its multidisciplinary character in this edition as well as its majority of well known personalities from the Middle East.

The jury was prescided by actress, video artista, dancer and producer Yasmine Al Massri, currently living in the United States and who represents a new generation who has managed to not lose values or culture. Yasmine was accompanied by IES Investigative Professor Haizan Admirah Fernandez, well known producer Montse Besada Vergara, currently Head of Acquisitions at TVG, Emma Lustres of Vaca Films, actor, producer and writer Michael Desante and Najla Said, film actress, comedienne and writer.

All of them decide who would receive this year’s awards in the different categories based on criteria such as the quality of the production, the art of reflecting new stories which interest the public and provide a new point of view.

Najla Said es actriz de cine, comediante y escritora nacida en 1974 en Boston. Licenciada en Princeton, perteneció al Public Theater’s Shakespeare Lab y participó activamente en los Talleres del New York Theatre. Hija del célebre abogado palestino Edward Said, es Miembro fundador del Colectivo de Teatro arabo-americano Nibras. Actuó en numerosas obras para la televisión y el teatro, entre las cuales se encuentra “ReOrientalism”, obra multimedia inspirada en el libro de su padre “Orientalism”. Su reciente pieza “Palestina” es un monólogo que se estrenó en Broadway en febrero de 2010 en el que narra su experiencia para convertirse en árabo-estadounidense.

Najla Said is a film actress, a comedienne and a writer. Born in 1974 in Boston, she is a graduate of Princeton. She has been part of the Public Theater’s Shakespeare Lab and also actively participated in the New York Theatre Workshops. Daughter of the well known Palestinian lawyer Edward Said, she is a founding member of Arab-American Theatre Collective Nibras. She has participated in numerous productions for television and theatre, among which are “ReOrientalism”, a multimedia production inspired by her father’s book “Orientalism”. Her most recent work, “Palestine”, is a monologue which premiered on Broadway in February 2010 and in which she narrates her experience of becoming an American Arab.

Haizam Amirah Fernández es investiga-dor principal de Mediterráneo y Mundo Árabe en el Real Instituto Elcano y profesor del Instituto de Empresa. Comentarista habitual en medios de comunicación españoles e internacionales, es es-pecialista en los procesos de transición hacia la democracia en el mundo árabe, región en la que creció. Recibió un máster en Estudios Árabes por la Universidad de Georgetown con una beca Ful-bright. Es el traductor del libro del autor egipcio Alaa Al Aswany titulado “Egipto: Las claves de una revolución inevitable” (Galaxia Gutenberg, 2011). Ha trabajado en la Organización de Na-ciones Unidas y en Human Rights Watch.

Haizam Amirah Fernandez collabo-rates with the Department for Mediterranean and Arab World Studies at the Elcano Royal In-stitute in Madrid and is a Professor of Investi-gation at the IE Business School in Madrid. A regular commentator in Spanish and interna-tional media, his area of expertise is the transi-tion processes to democracy in the Arab world, region where he has resided for more than six-teen years. Author of numerous articles, he has co-edited various books, among these the title “Maghreb: National realities and regional dynamics” (Madrid: Sintesis, 2008). He has worked at the United Nations (New York) and at Human Rights Watch (Washington DC).

La viguesa Montse Besada Vergara es uno de los miembros Fundadores de la Academia Galega do Audiovisual y desde 2009 trabaja como Jefa de Producción externa de la Televisión de Galicia (TVG). Anteriormente fue productora para la TVG de los programas “Xabarín Club”, “A tumba aberta”, “Europa”, eventos especiales y retransmisiones, coproducciones y producciones externas como “A familia Pita” o “Mareas vivas”. También dirigió la compañía Atlas Galicia para Telecinco.

Born in Vigo, Galicia, Ms Besada is a founding member of the Galician Audiovisual Academy. As of 2009 she is Head of External Production at regional public broadcaster TVG. Previously she has been a producer at the same channel of programmes “Xabarin Club”, cult programme “A Tumba Aberta”, “Europe” and the station’s special events and retransmissions. Montse has also been responsible for the channel’s co-productions and external productions “A Familia Pita” or “Mareas Vivas” among others. She has been MD for Telecinco’s production company Atlas Galicia.

Emma Lustres funda en 2003 la productora cinematográfica internacional con base en Galicia VACA FILMS STUDIO S.L. Forma parte de las Juntas Directivas de AGAPI (Asociación Gallega de Productoras Independientes) de AEC (Asociación Estatal de Cine) y de FAPAE (Federación de Asociaciones de Productores Audiovisuales Españoles). Su extensa filmografía incluye la producción de “Celda 211”, “Secuestrados”, “Retornos” y las TV Movies “El Tesoro” y “El Partido”. Ha sido co-productora de los largometrajes “Déjate Caer”, “Cargo” y “Somne” y ha participado como productora asociada en el largometraje “La Zona”.

Emma Lustres founded in 2003 international film production company VACA FILMS STUDIO S.L., based in Galicia. She is part of the Board of Directors at AGAPI (Galician Association of Independent Producers), AEC (National Film Association) and of FAPAE (Federation of Spanish Audiovisual Producer Associations). Yasmine Al Massri es actriz, vídeo artista, bailarina, y productora. Franco-Palestina nacida en Beirut, se mudó a París donde se graduó en la Escuela de Bellas Artes. Protagonista en la película “Miral”, dirigida por Julian Schnabel, consiguió el papel de Nisrine en la película libanesa “Caramel” dirigida por Nadine Labaki, reconocida por la crítica en el Festival de Cannes de 2007. En 2009, fue la protagonista de “Granadas y Mirra” de Najwa al Najjar, película que recibió el premio de la TVG en la séptima edición de Amal. Yasmine Al Massri representa la visión actual de una nueva generación sobre la realidad, fiel a la historia, a los valores y a la tradición.

Yasmine Al Massri is an actress, video artist, dancer and producer. This French-Palestinian, born in Beirut, studied fine arts in Paris. She has starred in film “Miral” directed by Julian Schnabel and also interpreted the role of Nisrine in the Lebanese film Caramel, directed by Nadine Labaki, which was acclaimed by critics at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. In 2009 she played the main role in “Granadas and Mirra” directed by Najwa al Najjar, film that obtained the TVG prize at the 7th Edition of the Amal Film Festival. Actor, productor y escritor palestino, con una sólida formación clásica, Michael Desante se dio a conocer al gran público gracias a su interpretación en el galardonado largometraje “En Tierra Hostil”, de la directora americana Kathryn Bigelow, que obtuvo varios premios entre los cuales 6 Oscars de la Academia de Cine Americano. Ha participado también en varios proyectos independientes. Entre sus trabajos para la televisión, destaca la miniserie de Showtime “Sleeper Cell”, nominada para los premios Emmy y los Globos de Oro, donde interpretó al agente especial Alim Saleh. En la actualidad está produciendo su segundo largometraje, una adaptación de las novelas de suspense británicas de Matt Rees.

A classically trained Palestinian actor, producer and writer, Michael Lesante has participated as actor in the multi award winning “The Hurt Locker” directed by american Kathryn Bigelow that obtained, among others, 6 Academy Awards. He has also participated in independent films. Among his TV work his role as Special Agent Alim Saleh stands out in Showtime Emmy and Golden Globe nominated miniseries “Sleeper Cell”. Desante is currently preparing his second film as producer, an adaptation of suspense novels by British author Matt Ress.

Abdulhamid Juma ha formado parte del equipo fundador del Festival Internacional de Cine de Dubai (DIFF) en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos en el 2004 y en el 2006. Su defensa del cine árabe independiente y su participación en el Consejo de Cooperación del Golfo (CCG) han contribuido a su nombramiento como Presidente del DIFF. También es miembro del Ministerio de Artes y Cultura de Dubai y asesora una serie de proyectos culturales en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, en particular aquellos relacionados con el cine. Es la tercera figura más influyente en el cine árabe según la publicación Good News Group.

Abdulhamid Juma was part of the initial team that founded the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) in 2004, and was appointed its Chairman in 2006 thanks to his involvement with independent Arab film and participation in the GCC (Gulf Co-operation Council). He is also a Board Member of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and lends counsel on cultural projects in the Emirates, with a special focus on film projects. He is currently the third most influential figure in Arab cinema according to the Good News Group.

El Trofeo Amal que recibieron todos los galardonados en la novena edición del Festival Amal fue un año más esculpido por el afamado artista Acisclo Manzano. Este escultor ourensano es miembro de la Academia Gallega de Bellas Artes y su larga trayectoria ha sido reconocida en numerosas ocasiones.

The Amal Trophy that all those awarded received in this ninth Edition of the Amal Festival was once again sculpted by the famous artist Acisclo Manzano. This sculptor from Ourense is member of the Galician Fine Arts Academy and has received numerous awards during his long artistic life.

Una gran fiesta de clausura celebrada el sábado 29 de octubre en el Teatro Principal puso punto y final a la novena edición del Festival Amal.

La presentadora gallega María Mera fue la encargada de conducir una gala a la que asistieron numerosas personalidades del mundo de la cultura, del cine y de la política. En el transcurso de la velada fueron desvelados los nombres de los ganadores en las distintas categorías oficiales de esta novena edición.

La Gala de clausura de Amal 2011 fue retransmitida en directo desde la página www.festivalamal.es. Esta retransmisión permitió que pudieran participar de esta celebración varios centenares de espectadores de todo el mundo, compartiendo con Amal un encuentro dedicado al diálogo entre culturas, la convivencia y la tolerancia.

The Festival ended on a high note with a Gala Event celebrated on Saturday October 29 at the Teatro Principal which closed the ninth Edition of the Amal Festival.

Galician presenter Maria Mera was in charge of conducting a gala where numerous personalities from the world of culture, film and politics were present. During the event, the names of those award-ed in the different official categories of this ninth edition were revealed.

The closing Gala for Amal 2011 was broadcast live on webpage www.festivalamal.es. This trans-mission enabled hundreds of spectators from all over the world to participate, sharing with Amal a celebration dedicated to the dialogue between cultures, coexistence and tolerance.

Amal es, ante todo, un foro de reflexión y debate abierto donde intercambiar ideas, expresar opiniones y compartir experiencias. Por esta razón, los coloquios se han convertido en una pieza clave en el engranaje de un Festival que aboga por el diálogo,la colaboración y el entendimiento.

Cineastas, actores y guionistas procedentes de todo el mundo viajaron a Santiago de Compostela, entre el 24 y el 29 de octubre, para participar en los coloquios organizados tras las proyecciones. Un total de diez invitados de diversas nacionalidades que conversaron animadamente con los espectadores, comentaron sus impresiones y respondieron a las dudas planteadas por el público.

Amal is, above all else, an open forum for reflection and debate where ideas can be exchanged, opinions expressed and experiences shared. For this reason, question and answer sessions have become a key feature of the Festival’s activities as it champions dialogue, collaboration and understanding.

Directors, actors and scriptwriters from all over the world travelled to Santiago de Compostela between the 24rd and the 29th of October, to participate in the Q&As that were organised after the screenings. A total of ten guests of different nationalities conversed animatedly with the public, commenting on their impressions and answering their questions.

La novena edición de Amal contó principalmente con tres sedes. En el Teatro Principal se proyectaron cortometrajes, largometrajes de ficción y largometrajes documentales. Este también fue el lugar que acogió el concierto de inauguración de los tres músicos palestinos Le Trio Joubran.

Otra de las sedes fue el Hotel Araguaney. Su Salón de convenciones acogió las proyecciones del Ciclo de Cine Infantil. La Galería Caroní fue el lugar escogido por el Festival para proyectar largometrajes documentales.

Además, por primera vez, el Festival Amal estuvo presente en toda la comunidad gallega. Distintas entidades acogieron el ciclo de cine experimental Amal 2011. Ocho cortometrajes experimentales euroárabes se proyectaron durante una semana en el Centro Cultural y Sala de Exposiciones de la diputación de Ourense, en el CGAC de Santiago de Compostela, en el MACUF de A Coruña, en el MARCO de Vigo y en el Museo Provincial de Lugo.

Los talleres de danza, cocina y caligrafía árabes completaron la programación y se llevaron a cabo en los Salones Olivo, Naranja y de Actos del Hotel Araguaney.

El Festival ha visto un considerable crecimiento de su numero de espectadores durante esta edición, con un incremento medio en la asistencia de un 15% respecto a 2010. Además, aunque la novena edición del Festival Amal ha durado un día menos, el número total de asistentes a proyecciones, ciclos, concursos y actividades paralelas ha superado en un 21% la cifra del año pasado. También se ha producido una notable subida en la asistencia a las sesiones de largometrajes documentales, 34% en 2011 frente al 24% en Amal 2010.

La página web del Festival también ha ampliado su alcance; en este año 2011 ha recibido un 17 % más de visitas.

The ninth Edition of Amal mainly took place in three venues. Shorts, fiction feature films and documentary films were projected at the The Teatro Principal. This was also the venue for the inauguration concert by Palestinian brothers Le Trio Joubran.

Another of the Festival venues was the Hotel Araguaney. The children’s film cycle took place in its convention’s hall. A third was the Caroni Gallery where documentary films were projected.

For the first time, the Amal Festival was present in the whole of Galicia. The Amal 2011 Experimental Film Cycle took place in different cities. Eight EuroArab experimental short films were projected for a week at Ourense’s county Cultural Centre and Exhibition Hall, at the Galician Contemporary Art Centre CGAC in Santiago de Compostela, at Fenosa’s Museum of Contemporary Art located in A Coruña, at Vigo’s MARCO modern art museum and at Lugo’s Provincial Museum.

The Arab dance, cookery and caligraphy workshops completed the programme and took place at the Hotel Araguaney’s Olivo, Naranja and Main function rooms. The Festival has seen a considerable growth in its number of spectators during this edition, with an average assistance increase of 15% compared to 2010. Although the IX edition of Amal was a day shorter, the total number of people who went to the projections, cycles, contests and activities increased 21% compared to last year. There was also a substantial rise in assistance to documentary films, 34% compared to 24% for Amal 2010. The Festival’s webpage also saw a large increase in traffic; this year it received 17% more visits.

El sábado 29, además de los talleres Amal, se celebró la Gala de Clausura de Amal 2011 en el Teatro Principal. Más de 340 espectadores nos acompañaron entonces y compartieron con Amal la entrega de los premios a las películas ganadoras.

La asistencia de los espectadores fue muy regular a lo largo de los cinco días de proyecciones, con una media de 700 espectadores por día, frente a los 610 espectadores de media de la octava edición de Amal. Esto supone un incremento medio en la asistencia de un 15% respecto al año 2010. Además, aunque la novena edición del Festival Amal duró un día menos que en 2010, el número total de asistentes a proyecciones, ciclos, concursos y actividades paralelas superó en un 21% la cifra del año pasado, lo que refleja la acogida cada vez mayor del Festival Amal entre el público gallego.

Assistance was regular during the five days of projections with an average of 700 spectators per day compared to the 610 average for the eighth edition of Amal. This implies an average increase of 15% with respect to the year 2010. And, although the ninth edition of the Amal Festival lasted a day less than in 2010, the total number of people who assisted to the projections, cycles, contests and parallel activities increased 21% compared to last year’s figures which reflects the Festival’s popularity with the Galician public.

En comparación con la pasada edición de Amal, se produce un notable incremento en la asisten-cia en las sesiones de largometrajes documen-tales (34% en 2011 frente a 24% en Amal 2010), a la vez que se equilibra el número de especta-dores en documentales y en ficción, modificán-dose así la tendencia observada en las últimas ediciones. De hecho, el Premio del Público se lo llevó este año la película “Esta es mi tierra, Hebrón”, un largometraje documental co-dirigido por Stephen Natanson y Giulia Amati.

A majority of spectators assisted to the documentary film sessions, a total of 34%, which were closely followed by the fiction fea-tures with a 29% and the Children’s Film Cycle, with an 18%. The list closes with short films which obtained a 17% assistance rate.

Compared to last year’s edition of Amal, there is a substantial increase in assistance to the documentary sessions (34% in the year 2011 compared to the 24% obtained in Amal 2010), at the same time documentary and fiction fea-tures tend to equal one another, which modifies the tendency observed in the last editions. As a matter of fact, the People’s Choice Award was give to the film “This is my Land, Hebron”, a doc-umentary feature film co-directed by Stephen Natanson and Giulia Amati.

La gran presencia de películas dirigidas por directoras y que aborden la situación de las mujeres en el mundo árabe son hechos que sin duda suscitan un interés particular de este género por la programación del Festival Amal. Así pues, las espectadoras del Festival Amal representan casi un 59% de la asistencia, frente a un 41% de varones. Además, se observa una mayoría de especta-doras en todas las categorías, especialmente en los largometrajes de ficción, donde alcanzan un 62% de la asistencia.

The large presence of Films directed by women which examine their situation in the Arab World are reasons that undoubtedly awaken a particular interest by this collective in the Amal Festival’s programming. Women viewers represent nearly a 59% of assistance as opposed to a 41% of men.

Women were the majority of spectators in all categories, especially fiction features, where they reached a 62%.

En la selección Oficial, se proyectaron un total de 37 películas entre cortometrajes y largometrajes, en formato documental/experimental o de ficción. En el anterior gráfico, se puede observar la participación por países.

Este año, destaca la presencia de producciones y coproducciones europeas francesas y españolas. Entre los países árabes, Palestina, los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Marruecos y Egipto encabezan la lista de mayor representación. Las coproducciones, por otra parte, fueron numerosas y representan un 27 % de las películas en selección oficial, en particular entre España y Marruecos así como entre Francia y Palestina.

The official section projected a total of 37 films, shorts and feature length film, belonging to fiction, documentary or experimental formats. In the previous graphics, different percentages by country may be observed.

This year, the presence of productions and co-productions from European France and Spain lead the way. En Amal 2011 hubo varios tipos de entradas. Los largometrajes de ficción y documentales contaron con una entrada de 2 euros y los cortometrajes de ficción y documental con una entrada de 1 euro por sesión. La entrada a los cortometrajes infantiles y experimentales fue gratuita. Además, estuvo a disposición de los espectadores un bono especial a un coste de 15 euros con el que se permitió el acceso a 10 sesiones. Amal ha permitido que diseñadores de todo el mundo participen en el Festival, convocando un concurso para seleccionar nuestra imagen gráfica 2011.

Gracias a este certamen, artistas internacio-nales nos mandaron cientos de propuestas diferentes, valientes e innovadoras. La dis-eñadora egipcia Reem Naeim se llevó final-mente el premio y su cartel “Arab revolt” ha sido la imagen de la IX edición del Festival Amal.

Una mano en símbolo de paz que apareció en todo nuestro material y publicaciones, y que el público pudo contemplar de cerca en nuestra exposición de carteles organizada en la galería de arte Caroní.

The Communications strategy Amal has al-lowed Designers from all over the World to participate in the Festival, calling for entries for the contest to choose a graphic image for the Festival in the year 2011.

Thanks to this contest, international artists sent hundreds of different proposals, brave and innovative. Egyptian designer Reem Naeim finally won the prize with her poster “Arab revolt” which became the image for the IX edition of the Amal Festival.

LAS LUNAS DE AMAL/ AMAL MOONS

Las Lunas de Amal tuvieron lugar en Febrero, Marzo, Abril, Mayo y Junio de 2011. El objetivo de este ciclo de cine era brindar la oportunidad a los espectadores del Festival Amal de elegir, mediante un sistema de votaciones online, sus películas favoritas entre los títulos que han participado en ediciones anteriores. Fueron 7 las películas que se proyectaron de forma gratuita en la Galería Caroní (Santiago de Compostela).

Amal Moons took place during February, March, April, May and June 2011. The objective of this cycle was to give Amal festival goers the opportunity to choose thanks to an online voting system their favourite films among those titles that have participated in previous editions. 7 films were projected, free of charge, at the Caroni Gallery (Santiago de Compostela)

Las muestras Amal son ciclos de películas ideados para mostrar cine árabe más allá de nuestras fronteras lo que permite a entidades de todo el mundo programar largometrajes, documentales y cortometrajes en colaboración con Amal.

The Amal showcases are film cycles created to show Arab Films in other venues. This permits that organisations from all around the World programme feature films, documentaries and shorts in collaboration with Amal.

Marzo-Mayo. Muestra Amal en Palestina.La II Muestra Amal en Palestina se inauguró en Marzo en el Campo de Refugiados de Balata, y hasta le mes de mayo viajó por muchos lugares de Palestina: la Librería Educativa de Jerusalén, la Universidad An-Najah de Nablus y Dar al-Nadwe, en Belén. Se exhibieron 10 películas en total, una sola voz contra la intolerancia y los prejuicios.

March – May. Amal Showcase in Palestine.The II Amal Showcase in Palestine opened in March at the Balata refugee camp and traveled all over Palestine: the Educational library in Jerusalem, the An-Najah University in Nablus and Dar al-Nadwe, in Bethlehem. A total of 10 films were exhibited, one voice against intolerance and prejudice.

Julio. Muestra Amal en Buenos Aires. Del 15 al 25 de Julio tuvo lugar la II Muestra Amal en Argentina, fruto de la colaboración entre el Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal y la asociación Creciente Cine Fértil, con el apoyo de AECID. Fueron más de 15 las películas que se proyectaron en la Biblioteca Nacional de Buenos Aires. Además se ofreció un concierto de Fertil SoundSystem con la vocalista tunecina Mariem Labido y se celebró una mesa redonda titulada “Mujeres árabes”.

July. Showcase in Buenos Aires. From the 15th to the 25th of July, the II Amal Showcase in Argentina took place, fruit of the collaboration between the International EuroArab Film Festival Amal and the Creciente Cine Fertil Association, with the support of AECID. More than 15 films were screened at the National Library in Buenos Aires. Fertil SoundSystem also offered a concert with Tunisian singer Mariem Labido and a round table on “Arab Women” also took place.

Noviembre. Muestra Amal en el MACUF. En el mes de noviembre, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Unión Fenosa en A Coruña en colaboración con el Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe organizó la I Muestra Amal en esta ciudad. En esta ocasión, fueron 10 las películas programadas, la mayoria documentales.

November. Amal Showcase at the MACUF. During the month of November, the Museum of Contemporary Art Union Fenosa in A Coruña in collaboration with the International EuroArab Film Festival Amal organised a showcase in this city. On this occasion, 10 films were featured, most of them documentaries.

FESTIVAL DOS ABRAZOS THE FESTIVAL OF HUGS Entre las más de 60 actividades culturales de todo tipo que recorrieron las calles y las plazas de la zona histórica en Santiago de Compostela con motivo de la celebración del Festival dos Abrazos, el público compostelano tuvo ocasión de ver cine árabe de la mano del Festival Amal los miércoles 10, 17 y 24 de Agosto. Fue en una de las plazas más agradables de la ciudad: la Ruela Xerusalém.

Among the more than 60 cultural activities of all types that filled the streets and squares of the old town of Santiago de Compostela on occasion of the celebration of the Festival dos Abrazos, the public in Compostela had the opportunity to see Arab films thanks to the Amal Festival on Wednesday August the 10th, 17th and 24th in one of the most picturesque squares of the city: the Ruela Xerusalem.

DIA DE LA TIERRA PALESTINA LA SITUACIÓN DE PALESTINA A DEBATEDAY OF PALESTINE; A DEBATE ON PALESTINE SITUATION El Festival Internacional de Cine EuroÁrabe Amal 2011 celebró el Día de la Tierra Palestina en colaboración con la USC el miércoles 30 de marzo en la Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales. En esa ocasión, la proyección del documental Camino a Nahr Al Bared fue seguida de una charla con Francisco Martínez Hidalgo, Profesor de Ciencia Política y de la Administración en la USC y Ghaleb Jaber Ibrahim, Presidente de la Fundación Araguaney – Puente de Culturas.

The International EuroArab Film Festival Amal 2011 celebrated Palestine Day in collaboration with the University of Santiago de Compostela on Wednesday march 30th a the Faculty of Political and Social Science. On the occasion, the documentary “Road to Nahr Al Bared” was projected and this was followed by a conference by Francisco Martinez Hidalgo, Professor of Political Science and part of the University Administration and Ghaleb Jaber Ibrahim, President of the Araguaney – Bridge between Cultures Founda-tion.

AMAL & LA ASOCIACIÓN PAZ CON DIGNIDADAMAL & THE ASSOCIATION “PEACE WITH” DIGNITY

El Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal colaboró con la Asociación Paz con Dignidad en un curso titulado “Crónicas de un Apartheid” que tuvo lugar en Vizcaya el 15 de Abril. Se proyectó en esta ocasión el cortometraje Un Extraño en mi casa, de la directora palestina Sahera Dirbas.

The International EuroArab Film Festival Amal collaborated with the Association Peace with Dig-nity in a course entitled “Chronicle of an Apartheid”, which took place in Vizcaya on the 15th of April. The short film “A Stranger in my House” by Palestinian director Sahera Dirbas was projected.

Amal colaboró el pasado 2 de mayo con la VII muestra de cine “El mundo y los derechos humanos” organizada en Pamplona por Golem y el Aula de Derechos Humanos del IPES/GITE Navarra. Amal colaboró con la proyección del largometraje de ficción Zindeeq, del director palestino Michel Khleifi, seguida de un debate en el que intervino José Abu-Tarbush, profesor titular de Sociología de la Universidad de La Laguna. Amal collaborated on the 2nd of May with the VII Film Showcase “The World and Human Rights” organised in Pamplona by Golem and the Secondary Public School’s Room for Human Rights at the IPES/GITE Navarra. Amal contributed with the projection of fiction film Zindeeq, by Palestinian director Michel Khleifi; this was followed by a debate headed by Jose Abu-Tarbush, professor of Sociology at the University of La Laguna.

El Festival Amal colaboró el 5 de mayo con la tercera edición del ciclo Cine Fórum “Mujeres, Oriente Medio y resistencia”, un evento organizado por la asociación Palestina Biladi en Bilbao. Amal proyectó en esa ocasión el cortometraje documental “Un Extraño en mi Casa” de Sahera Dirbas. Estuvieron presentes en la mesa de debate la directora de la película así como Salam Almaslamani, Presidenta de la Comunidad Palestina en Cataluña. The Amal Festival collaborated on May 15th with the third edition of the Forum Film Cycle “Wom-en, the Middle East and Resistance”, an event organised by the Palestinian Association Biladi in Bilbao. Amal projected on this occasion the documentary short film “A Stranger in my House” by Sahera Dirbas. The film’s director was present at the debate as was Salam Almaslamani, President of the Palestinian Community in Catalunya.

Así Amal colaboró con el ciclo de cine “La emigración árabe cristiana” organizado por el Centro Internacional para el Estudio del Oriente Cristiano en Granada. En esta ocasión, se proyectó el documental Árabes cristianos, del director jordano Bashar Mahmoud Abu Yousef (2008).

Amal collaborated with the film cycle “Arab Christian Immigration” organised by the International Centre for the Study of Christian Orient in Granada. On this occasion, documentary “Arab Christians” was screened. This documentary by Jordanian director Bashar Mahmoud Abu Yousef was produced in 2008.

AMAL & FUNDACIÓN TRES CULTURASAMAL & “TRES CULTURAS” FIUNDATION

Amal se trasladó a Sevilla para el ciclo de cine jordano organizado por la Fundación Tres Culturas. En esta ocasión, el público pudo disfrutar de cuatro cortometrajes jordanos. Con esta colaboración, el Festival pretendía difundir la cultura árabe y el cine jordano más allá de Galicia, compartiendo con la Fundación Tres Culturas un mismo objetivo: promover el diálogo, la paz y la tolerancia mediante el conocimiento mutuo.

Amal travelled to Seville for the Jordanian Film Cycle organised by the Tres Culturas Foundation. On this occasion, the public enjoyed four Jordanian short films. With this collaboration, the Festival intended to spread Arab culture and Jordanian film further than Galicia, sharing with the Tres Culturas Foundation a same objective: to promote dialogue, peace and tolerance thanks to mutual knowledge.

El Festival Amal colaboró con la Universidad de Coimbra en el Centro de Cultura e Intervenção Feminista con ocasión de un ciclo de cine y debates alrededor de las mujeres palestinas. Se proyectarán las películas “Women in Struggle” y “Maria´s Grotto”. La directora, Buthina Canaan Khoury, estuvo presente y participó en un coloquio en el que se trató la situación de la mujer en Palestina, su activismo político y sus códigos de conducta.

The Amal Festival collaborated with the University of Coimbra at the Centro de Cultura e Intervenção Feminista on occasion of the film cycle and debates organised around the theme of Palestinian women. The films “Women in Struggle” and “Maria’s Grotto” were projected. The director, Buthina Canaan Khoury was present and participated in the debate on the situation of women in Palestine, the political activism and their codes of conduct.
