• High capacity (and Costly !) WS’s purchased for full time CAD users & Drafters

WS’s renewed periodically for same group of people


VDI NEED ?

• Lower Cost or Older WS’s are provided to partial CAD users and light users.

• They have problems when they work with extra-large assemblies !


VDI NEED ?

• My Dream / Requirement:

• Centrally located powerful WS’s or Servers

• Allocate it to the partial/light CAD users via remote desktop, whenever they need additional

power for large assemblies

• Cut the expenses for buying high capacity

• We asked for a POC study

• SW company proposed another solution partner (?!)

• Studies initiated (2014, September)

• POC Lasted 3 months,• Vendor’s demo & testing server (Fujitsu R920) & 2 thin clients installed• IT and PLM groups were busy with other operational tasks (as most of the times !), • There were problems, but it is said to be solved with real server deployment and

real effort & concentration...• Studies were found to be successful

• GO decision given

Purchase of the Initial HW & SW

• First Group HW and SW are purchased (2015, Feb.)• 5 Servers (Dell PowerEdge R720, Intel Xeon E-26XX v2 Processors, Intel Xeon E5-2670 2.5 GHGz 25M Cache, 8.0GT/s QPI Turbo,

HT, 10 C 1866 MHz, 24 X 16GB RDIMM 1600 MHz, 2 X NVIDIA GRID K2 GPU)

• 35 Dell thin clients, (DELL WYSE Z90Q8 - 16GF/4GR - QUAD CORE)

• 35 XenDesktop (Platinium)

• Service Agreement is signed


DEPLOYMENT OF HW & SW

• HW and SW are installed (Feb 2015)


First Part 1/6

• Server deployments are completed.

• 5 clients are provided to some key users.

• WS’s are kept below their desk as a

failsafe mechanism.

• After some period, performance issues and compatibility problems with

Catia V6 is observed.

• WS are taken back to service !


First Part 2/6

• Server and client deployments are repeated with different setup parameters and method (2015, Mar)

• Admin tests are completed

• 5 clients are provided to same key users.

• After some period, different types of performance issues and crash-downs observed.

• WS’s are taken back again to service !


First Part 3/6

• Solution provider is recalled for solving the problems.

• Response was not quick, as their technical manager quit the job !

• Another experienced engineer provided support, and he tried new deployment configurations.

• Tests are reinitiated, some other issues are observed. Studies were ongoing to solve the issues.

• Suddenly, we got a message that this key admin also quit the job for joining the previous technical manager’s startup company !


First Part 4/6

• We had a louder complaint directly to the software provider

• They guarantee their concrete support (2015, June)

• Studies reinitiated with the same solution partner with a newly hired administrator

• And also direct software provider support is given


First Part 5/6

• System started to become faster and more accurate.

• Test users are enlarged to 20+ numbers

• When the load on the system starts to increase with user quantity, stability problems re-occured and crash downs continue.

• For different problems & errors reported by users, we had to wait for some days/weeks to reach to a solution.

• WS are taken back to service !


First Part 6/6

• After additional 3 months of trial & errors, PLM teams credibility and user’s believe in to the system ended

• Users don’t want to use the thin clients due

to their heavy work load & tight schedules

• Our believe & trust to the SW and Partner goes below zero !

Re-initiation with another SW Provider

• We contact with another virtualization solution provider and ask their guidance (2015 Sep.)

• They offered direct involvement. • ‘’VmWare Horizon with the new version is very stable’’

• ‘’We have the expertise and will not let a similar support failure’’

• Decision: A new POC study initiation


Second Part POC 1/2

• We deployed Horizon Client and Horizon ESX and started POC tests once more (2015 October)

• Everything seemed to be well working

• POC takes about 2,5 months,

• The deployment is enlarged to 20 users during POC.

• Again some problems observed but the response and solution providing was very fast.


Second Part POC 2/2

• The systems come to a mature and reliable state

• It is enlarged to 35 users, all thin clients became active (2016, Feb)

• We decided to go on with this SW and solution partner.

• We were planning to use the system for light users.• But the performance is high, even better than our new WS’s

• Thin clients are also provided to full time CAD users

Hardware:

• VDI and CAD Virtualization will be our strategic future direction for our CAD Infrastructure assets.

• We will continue to invest on this technology to cover all WS hardware inventory step by step in 2.5 years.

• HW selection and configuration is very critical

• Solution partner’s maturity, background and experience level is very important.

• Never underestimate the POC studies !• Give importance and spend adequate man-hours !

• Perform close to real life tests & scenarios

• Visit the reference customers, at least call them for checking the truth of the success stories
