ELKS MEETINGS 2 ND & 4 TH TUESDAY OF THE MONTH EXALTED RULERS MESSAGE June 2021 The Friendly Lodge / A Fraternal Organization June 2021 Monthly News Letter The Elks Tale Tito Crespo To the members of the Haverstraw Elks Lodge 877, As we say goodbye to May and as the warm weather approaches, our thoughts turn to summer fun. We can’t wait for picnics and parties, beaches and pools, cool drinks and food hot off the grill. Memorial Day weekend has become the unofficial start of summer and your lodge is ready to embrace a “back to normal” hot fun in the summer sun. We also are ready to embrace the real meaning of Memorial Day, a day to remember and honor the men and women of our country who died while serving in our military to protect and ensure our freedom. The Lodge will commemorate their sacrifice with a ceremony on Monday, May 31st, at Mount Repose Cemetery in Haverstraw at 11 AM. All are invited and encouraged to attend. As mentioned in last month’s Veterans Corner, please make an effort to pay your respects sometime, at the 24 hour vigil, during the Haverstraw Watchfire ceremony at Bowline Point Park starting 11:30 PM May 29 th. Both promise to be very moving tributes. Flag Day is a celebration of the adoption by the Continental Congress on June 14 th 1777 of the “Stars and Stripes” as the official American Flag. The Lodge will commemorate with a ceremony on Sunday, June 13 th at 11 AM. Once again, all members are invited and encouraged to attend to help honor our glorious flag, a symbol held dear by our country and our organization. “This is the Flag of our country, the emblem of freedom and the symbol of unity…may we ever love and defend it.” Father’s Day was first celebrated in the United States on June 19 th 1910 and became a recognized National Holiday in 1972, the 3 rd Sunday in June every year. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Fathers a very Happy & Healthy Father’s Day 2021. Now, back to the picnics and parties! Don’t miss all the events at your “Summer Lodge” on the river. The Luau is back on July 2 nd and Hotdog Day for the kids on July 31 st and that’s just the beginning. After last year, we have some catching up to do and your Lodge is ready to help. Tito Crespo / Exalted Ruler

June 2021 I was recently asked by a newly-initiated member, “what makes the difference at an Elks Lodge?” Serving within any capacity at within a Lodge can be a very rewarding experience. Elks enjoy being a part of something larger than themselves and working for worthwhile projects in our Lodges, communities and Nation. This past year brought this into sharp focus. Things that we were used to always doing changed or stopped completely! The Order of Elks is a quiet network of patriotic men and women performing good deeds and changing lives for the better, without the need for recognition. What is the motivation for this incredible gift to our communities? I think the answer lies within our motto’s description of how members care for each other - we write “their virtues upon the tablets of love and memory.” The strength of our Order is the strength of each Member. It defines the Order of Elks. We stay aware of what each other is doing, applaud each other’s efforts, acknowledge our successes, and encourage each other in our individual pursuits. When Elks get together, great things happen. Things like building hospitals for veterans, scholarships for our college-bound young people and charity that is beyond comparison. In a year that began with a lockdown and many Lodges affected by the fear of financial Dinsolvency, I’d say we learned that success is how high you bounce back after you’ve hit bottom. True and upright members bear a work ethic for all to see and shun inaction in the face of challenges. They don’t turn from a problem; however, in working toward solutions they treat others with respect, concern and encouragement. They ask the question, “What can I do to help?” They collaborate, inspire and thank others around them. This past year was an ordeal. In spite of it, we learned that our dedication to our principles and resolute determination to support our communities were the most powerful weapon we have. We learned that being good wasn’t good enough we had to adapt and in doing so, become better. We set our course by our cardinal principles, not by what was going on around us. This is what makes the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and its quiet network of good deeds so effective. Thank YOU for all that each one of you do! Fraternally, and sincerely, Paul H. Crumb, DDGER Mid-Hudson District #6180

Veterans Corner June 2021

VA is currently implementing Public Law 116-315 containing three key loan provisions for Vietnam War era Veterans, eligible National Guard members, and service members, Veterans and certain surviving spouses with VA-guaranteed loans. The law, known as the Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020, “offers new and renewed homeownership possibilities,” said Acting VA Under Secretary for Benefits Thomas Murphy. “These few changes can have a significant impact on our current homeowners, especially for those who were previously ineligible but now have the opportunity to use the benefits they have earned.” According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, an estimated 35 million people will relocate this year, with most taking place between the start of the peak season for moving in May through September. It’s possible that these numbers could increase with the following expansions to the program:

1. Expanded criteria for eligibility among Vietnam Era Veterans to those whose wartime service began on or after Nov. 1, 1955. The previous start date to qualify for the VA home loan benefit as a Vietnam Era Veteran was Feb. 28, 1961.

2. Enhanced access to service members and some Veterans of the National Guard. The new statutory authority extends eligibility to members of the National Guard who have been mobilized to perform full-time guard duty for at least 90 cumulative days, with 30 days of that service being consecutive.

3. Service members, Veterans and certain survivors with VA-guaranteed home loans or VA direct loans whose residences have been substantially damaged or destroyed in an area that has been declared a major disaster by the President are now eligible to be charged a first time use funding fee on a VA-guaranteed loan rather than a subsequent use funding fee. The borrower’s next VA-guaranteed loan must be for the repair of the damaged or destroyed residence or purchase or construction of a new home closed within three years of the Presidential declaration of the disaster.

For more information go to VA’s Loan Guaranty page.
