February10,2016Colleagues:Ihopethebeginningofthesemesterisgoingwellforyouandourstudents.Thespringsemesteriswellunderway.Itwasapleasureformetospendtimeonourcampuses,seeingourstudents,facultyandstaffatwork.IamveryproudthatourformerLaneyfootballplayerCJAnderson(seealsobelow)hadagreatgameattheSuperBowl.Wecongratulateallofyouwhohadapartinhelpinghimgrowtotheplayerheistoday.WehadhimbeforeCaldid.Iappreciateeveryone’spatienceasweworkhardtoaddresstheissuesraisedintheITassessment.YoursupportandsharingofinformationwithourChiefofStafforVCofFinance&AdministrationtohelpmoveITforwardisverycriticalandneeded.MeetingwithLisaTomlinsonoftheWarriors
IhadaproductivemeetingthispastweekwithLisaTomlinsonoftheNBAWorldChampionGoldenStateWarriors.WediscussedvariouspossibilitiesforcooperationwiththeWarriorsandinvolvementwithPeralta.Wewillfollow-uptomakethingshappen.Shewaspleasedwereachedouttoher.IwanttothankGinaTomlinsoninIT,whohappenstobeLisa’ssister,formakingthisconnectionhappenforus.

FarewelltoBCCIcompletedmyshortstayatBCConThursday.Ihadquiteanexperiencegettingacquaintedwithfacultyandstaffthere.Ialsobecamequiteawareofsomeoftheirneeds,especiallyintechnology.Therearestartechnology-basedprogramsthathaveantiquatedcomputersandsomehavebasicneeds,likesimpletoolstocleantheirfacilities.Despitesomeofthechallenges,thereisahighspiritofcooperationamongthefacultyandastrongbeliefinabrightfuture.Ihaveenjoyedhearingsomeoftheirproposalsforadministrativeleadershipandtheirsuccessesinbasicskillswriting.MeetingwithBARTGeneralManagerGraceCrunican

IamhappytoreportthatBARTrecentlyenteredintoapartnershipwithPeralta-CollegeofAlameda…Asbackground,theDistrictdevelopedatrainingprogramto provide selected employees, in the Utility Worker classification, theopportunity to train for and promote to positions within the Transit VehicleMechanic(TVM)classification.Thetrainingprogramcreatesapathwayforten

UtilityWorkers to become TVMs through a formal education and on the Jobtrainingprogram.AbriefdescriptionoftheEducationPartnershipwithPeraltaisasfollows:EducationPartnershipTheDistrictpartneredwiththeCollegeofAlamedatodevelopacohortprogramfortheselectedemployeestoobtainaDieselMechanicCertification.Theselectionprocessisunderwayandtheprogramisscheduledtostartinthefallof2016.Theareasoffocusfortheprograminclude:
• Diagnosing problems in mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems thatrequiretheuseofsophisticatedcomputersandotherdiagnostictestequipment.
• Troubleshooting electronic controls that govern engine performance andhorsepower.
• Troubleshootingsteering,hydraulic,andpneumaticsystemsaswellasbrakes,axles,differentials,electricmotors,andcompressors.We also discussed Peralta's interest in communicatingwith BART employeesregardingeducationalopportunitiesatPeraltacampuses.GracementionedtheBARTDiversity Fair and our Health,Wealth andWellness Fairs as a possibleemployeeeventstosetupaboothandtalktoemployees.WejusthadaHealth,WealthandWellnessFairearlier thisyear,however, thenextDiversityFair isscheduled on Wednesday, April 27. If Peralta is interested in participating,please contact Sharon Moore, Program Manager, Workforce and PolicyCompliance…Finally,wehaveidentifiedthreeofourmanagerstoviewtheComcasttrainingpartnershipbetweenPeraltaandtheBayAreaBusinessRoundtable.
FacultyPrioritizationTheCabinetmovedforwardbyhavingtheCollegesreplacetheirfacultyretirementsandresignations.TherecruitmentforthesepositionsismovingforwardwithanticipatedhiringstobeconcludedbyearlyMay.Lastyear,wewerestilldoingrecruitmentinJulyandAugust.Ifstatefundingbecomesavailablefornewfaculty,thosepositionswillbefilledeitherinJanuaryornextfall.

Onetopicthatwasbroughtupfordiscussion,butnotactedon,wastheneedtoreallocatepositionsacrosstheDistricttosatisfytheBudgetAllocationModel(BAM).Wearestillworkingtoidentifythedocumentationandtoimplementitifitis,indeed,theintent.WithoutdenyingtheneedtofollowtheBAM,gooddiscussionsandtransparencyonthisissuearenecessary.IwanttothanktheleadersoftheDistrictAcademicSenateforspendingtimewiththeCabinetontheprioritizationprocess.SessionwithFDIP
ScottHoshida,thirdfromleft,gavemetheopportunitytomakeapresentationtoourinternsinourFacultyDiversityInternshipProgram.IsharedwiththemthephilosophyoftheCommunityCollege,andwehadproductivediscussionsabouteffectiveteaching.Iappreciatetheopportunitytointeractwithseveralindividualswhowillbecome,notonlypart-timefaculty,butalsohavethepotentialofbecomingfull-timepermanentfacultyforus.
