ABDESSALAM OULD AHMED

Mr. Ould Ahmed MS, a national of Mauritania, holds a B.A. in Economics from the Faculty of Law and Economic Sciences, Tunis, an MSc in Economic Sciences (Development Economics) from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, France, and an International Diploma in Public Administration from the National School of Administration (ENA), Paris, France. Mr. Ould Ahmed started his professional career in 1985 with the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Mauritania. He occupied several important official positions in Mauritania where he served successively as Director of Planning, Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister, Minister of Fisheries and high commissioner for human rights and poverty alleviation, a position he held until September 2001. From 2002 to April 2003, he worked as an international consultant on development matters. Mr. Ould Ahmed joined FAO in May 2003. He served successively as FAO Representative in Lebanon, Togo, Egypt, and as Director of the FAO Liaison Office with the United Nations in Geneva. Since October 2012 Mr. Ould Ahmed has served as Assistant-Director General and Regional Representative for the Regional Office for the Near East.

SIMEON EHUI

Simeon Ehui, was appointed Director of the World Bank’s Food and Agriculture Global Practice in September 2017. Since joining the World Bank in 2003, Dr. Ehui has held a number of assignments. He was manager of the Food and Agriculture Global Practice for Africa (2015-2017) and South Asia (2009-2015). He also served as Lead Economist and Sector Leader for the Sustainable Development Network in Nigeria covering a variety of issues such as agriculture, environment, transport and energy. Before joining the World Bank, Dr. Ehui worked for 15 years in the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). He managed multi-country agricultural research development programs in Africa and Asia for both the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). Dr. Ehui holds a PhD in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University and has published extensively in his field. He is an honorary fellow of the African Agricultural Economist Association, and a Distinguished Agricultural Alumnus of Purdue University.

Catarina Bjorlin Hansen is the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s Deputy Head, Egypt, where she is responsible for delivering EBRD’s business results. Catarina joined EBRD in 2006 working in the infrastructure team in Central Asia and the Caucasus until 2016 where she was responsible for over one hundred infrastructure projects across these regions. Before joining EBRD, Catarina worked for the Carl Bro consultancy company in the area of infrastructure covering the Commonwealth of Independent States, South East Asia and the Middle East. Catarina is a Swedish national and holds an MSc. in Development Finance from the School for Oriental and African Studies, London.

Gilles Mettetal is a senior agribusiness advisor. Until June 2017, he `was the Director of the Agribusiness and the Property and Tourism departments at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Previously, he worked for the Investment Centre of FAO and for OECD/``Club du Sahel. Mr. Mettetal holds a post graduate degree from L’Ecole Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Montpellier and an MSc. degree in Biology and Environment.

SAAD NASSAR

Saad Nassar is a Professor of Agricultural Economics at Cairo University and Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. He formerly served as the Dean of the College of Agriculture, President of the Agricultural Research Centre (ARC) and Governor of El Fayoum, Egypt. He holds a PhD, MSc and BSc in Agricultural Economics and fellowship of the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank (IBARD).

MUNIR A. JUMAH

Munir A. Jumah is the Undersecretary of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), the Egyptian Ministry of Investment and International Cooperation. He also serves as the Undersecretary, Investment Promotion Sector, GAFI. Prior to his current position, he headed MENA region at the Investment Promotion Sector since 2011. He also served as the Vice President for Investments in Jubail Development Company in Saudi Arabia from 2008 to 2011. He has also worked in the Royal Commission in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, in the field of Planning and Economic Studies for 18 years.

SANDRA BROKA

Sandra Broka is a Senior Agriculture Economist in the Agriculture and Food Global Practice at the World Bank, focusing on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region. Since joining the Bank in 1999, she has led operations and analytical work on development of agriculture and agribusiness sectors, as well as agricultural and rural finance and agricultural risk management systems across Europe and Central Asia, India, Mexico and Bangladesh. She joined the World Bank’s MENA Region in March 2017 where she focuses on Egypt, Yemen and Djibouti.

ALI EISSA

Engineer Ali Eissa is the Chairman of the Board of the Egyptian Businessmen’s Association and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Misr for Land Reclamation and Agriculture company (MATCO) in Nubaria. Previously he served as the President of the General Division for Exporters at the General Union of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce. Eissa is currently a board member of the British Egyptian Business Association. In the past he has also served on the board of directors of the Export Development Bank of Egypt.

TAMER EL-RAGHY

Tamer has over 20 years of experience in innovation, M&A, and PE in USA, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Tamer manages responsAbility’s PE investments in mid market companies in the Agriculture and Food space in Africa. Prior to joining responsAbility, he led Cargill’s growth strategy and investments in Africa with a focus on animal nutrition, animal protein and commodities value chain. He started his career as a materials engineer where he co-invented a new class of materials, held 9 patents and founded a company that commercialized the technology for both defense and civilian applications. Tamer received an MBA from NYU Stern School of Business (New York) and a PhD in Materials Engineering from Drexel University (Philadelphia).

ALAA FAHMY

Alaa Fahmy has extensive professional experience in academia at the Military Technical College (MTC) including serving as its President from 2011-2014, as well as the Vice President, Dean, Head of Graduate Studies and Applied Research and a number of other professional and teaching positions. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kent, and an MSc. and a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from MTC.

She is a Japanese national and has an MSc degree in Political Economy of Transition in Europe from the London School of Economics. She is currently a Lead Economist responsible for a group of 10 economists and analysts covering Industry, commerce and agribusiness sectors within the Sector Economics and Policy (SEP) pillar of Economics Policy and Governance (EPG) department. She leads the on-going analytical work in the areas of enhancing competitiveness, value chain development, knowledge economy and SME development.

OLEKSIY VADATURSKY

Oleksiy Vadatursky is the majority owner and General Director of NIBULON, a leading Ukrainian investor, agricultural producer, exporter, and shipbuilder, which he founded in 1991. In 2007, he was conferred upon the title of Hero of Ukraine and the Order of State by a Ukrainian Presidential Decree. NIBULON revives cargo and passenger navigation on Ukrainian rivers, as well as shipbuilding. NIBULON has changed from a small firm to the company with a chain of branches, having invested more than USD 1.72 billion in the economy of Ukraine.

DMITRY PRIKHDKO

Dmitry Prikhodko, is an Economist at FAO’s Investment Centre. He holds a Specialist’s degree in Economics and Farm Accounting from the Zhytomyr National Agroecological University (1995) and PhD in Environmental and Nature Resource Economics from Lviv State Agricultural University in Ukraine (1999). He worked for eight with the US Department of Agriculture on agricultural market analysis and development issues before leading production and business development research in a U.S. multinational agribusiness company. Since joining FAO in 2006, he has worked on projects in Europe, Central Asia, South Asia and North Africa facilitating more than US$1 billion investments in grains, sugar, cotton, meat and dairy sectors in partnerships with EBRD and the World Bank.

SHERIF BASSILY

Sheriff Bassily is the Chairman of the Egyptian Holding Company for silos and storage. His positions also include Head of the Northern Military Works Branch and Assistant Director of the Military Works Department for national projects including the construction of 25 metal silos with a capacity of 1.5 million tons. He has a Bachelor in Civil Engineering.

MOHAMED EL GAMMAL

Mohamed El Gammal is a Market Grain Information Consultant at FAO. He has over 30 years of practical experience in the grain sector, business administration, marketing and research. He established Flour Land, the first integrated flour mill in Egypt, where he served as the General Manager from 1994 to 2007. He also served as a General Manager for several big industrial and real estate companies. Mr. Elgammal has an MA in Mass Communication and a High Diploma in Marketing from Cairo University.

SAFWAT EL HADDAD

Dr. Safwat El Haddad is the Deputy Minister of Agriculture for Services and Follow Up. In the past, he has worked as an adviser and head of the agriculture office at the Egyptian Embassy in Washington, D.C. Dr. El Haddad has also represented Egypt in reviewing the terms of the EU Partnership Agreement with Egypt, as well as being part of the Egyptian delegation to the World Trade Organization to review Egypt’s trade policies. He is currently a member of the Committee for the Development of Food Safety Law and Establishment of the Food Safety Authority. He holds a PhD in plant pathology from Cairo University.

Dmitriy Furda was promoted to the position of senior trader at NIBULON in August of 2017. Before that he had worked for the company for eight years occupying various positions including contract operations and corn, sorghum and barley trader. Dmitriy speaks fluent Arabic which helps him acquire a deeper understanding of the Middle East and North Africa markets and to expand NIBULON activities in the region.

NIKOLAY GORBACHOV

Nikolay Gorbachov serves as the Director of the Soufflet Group in Ukraine since 2005 and as of 2017, as the President of the Ukrainian Grain Association. He has 20 years of experience in agricultural trading. Mr Gorbachov holds an MBA from the International Management Institute of Ukraine (MIM) and graduated from the National Academy of Public Administration under the President of Ukraine. He also completed training programs at Carnegie Mellon University Tepper School of Business, and Iowa State University.

MOHAMED KHALIL

Mohamed Khalil is the Chairman and CEO of Bunge Egypt, the Egyptian Trading subsidiary of Bunge SA. He is on the Board of Directors as a non-executive member of Attijari Wafa Bank Egypt and is the President of the Egyptian Grain Suppliers Association. He started his professional career as a diplomat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then at the UN in New York. Subsequently, he joined Citibank N.A. where he was Treasurer of Citibank Egypt. Mr Khalil graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Political Sciences at Cairo University.

NOMANI NASR

Nomani Nasr is the Adviser of the Minister of Supply and Internal Trade for Economic and Commercial Affairs. He was appointed Vice Chairman of the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) in 2009 where he originally started working in 1976. Nomani Nasr has many years of experience studying market conditions and working with Egyptian food exports and imports. He has a Bachelor of Commerce from Cairo University.

ABDELHAMID EL DEMERDASH

Abdelhamid El Demerdash is the Chairman of AEC as well as the Managing Director of the Maghrabi Agricultural Company. He is a member of the Agriculture Committee of the House of Representatives; the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) where he serves as the Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture; and Board of Directors of the Chamber of Food Industries.

Giovanna Ceglie is a Director at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, a specialized agency of the UN that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. She is an expert in small and medium enterprise development and led the UNIDO programme for clusters and business linkages providing technical assistance and policy advice to over 30 developing countries. Since February 2011 she has served as the Director of the UNIDO Regional Office in Cairo, managing UNIDO activities in the region which include projects on agro-industrial development, cleaner production and resource efficiency, SMEs and employability, and renewable energy. She has authored and contributed to a number of papers, manuals, books on clusters and network development and has been invited as a lecturer by several institutions and universities on cluster development themes.

MOHSEN EL BELTAGY

Mohsen El Beltagy is one of the leading growers and exporters of fresh produce in Egypt. He is also the vice chairman of Belco, one of the largest Egyptian companies in the field of agriculture that exports fresh produce globally. He is also the Chairman of Heia (Horticultural Export Improvement Association) which supports the Egyptian Horticultural community.

ABDELHAMID EL DEMERDASH

Abdelhamid El Demerdash is the Chairman of AEC as well as the Managing Director of the Maghrabi Agricultural Company. PANEL 2 OPPORTUNITIES IN THE HORTICULTURE SECTOR: THE FRESH AND THE PROCESSED

HESHAM EL NAGGAR

Mr. Hesham El Naggar is the CEO of Daltex Group. Established in 1964, the Group manages reclamation and agricultural operations, inputs procurement, sales and distribution operations for a land bank of over 50,000 hectares. With global presence and commercial offices in Germany, UK and the UAE, the Group maintains a leading Potato exports market share of over 40%. He has held several positions in agricultural committees and associations locally and internationally. In 1995 he co-founded the Horticultural Export Improvement Association (HEIA) of which he is also a board member. El Naggar is actively engaged in global initiatives for food security and poverty eradication and has represented Egypt at the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) convention in 2017.

ASHRUF MEGAHED

Ashruf Megahed is a Principal Investment Officer at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in Washington DC, where he has worked for 13 years overseeing a number of highly visible and impactful agribusiness transactions in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and South Asia. He currently oversees IFC’s agribusiness sector in the Middle East where his work has led to the ramp up of the program in the region. Prior to joining IFC, Ashruf has worked for 7 years at KPMG’s Assurance and Transaction Service practice in the UK, the Netherlands and Egypt. An Egyptian national, Ashruf has a particular passion and commitment to the role IFC can play in facilitating economic development in the sector and the country. Ashruf is a CPA and holds an MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

PETER TALKS

Peter Talks is an Economist specialized in the interface between agricultural policy, trade, investment and development. He has acquired a detailed understanding of agricultural, trade and policy issues from both public and private sector perspectives, including agricultural trade negotiations for the European Commission, as lead European analyst for USDA, at the OECD and in the private sector. Mr. Talks has a PhD in economics from the University of Nottingham.

MARTIN TODD

Martin Todd is the Managing Director of LMC International, a UK-based economic consultancy specialising in agricultural commodities. At LMC, he is also responsible for the company’s extensive work in the sugar sector. Before joining LMC in 1990, he worked for four years for an international trade house, where he managed the company’s commodities research department.

MOHAMED ABDEL RAHEEM

Accountant Mohamed Abdel Raheem holds a Bachelor’s degree in commerce from Assiut University. He is the Managing Director of financial and administrative affairs of the Egyptian Sugar and Integrated Industries Company, where he has also he served in various capacities since 1977. Mr. Abdel Raheem has also served as member of the Board of Directors of the Delta Sugar Company and the Nubaria Sugar Company.

MOSTAFA ABD ELGAWAD FARAG

Prof. Mustafa Abdel Gawad Farag holds a PhD in sugar crops breeding from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He is the Director of Sugar Crops Research Institute, the Vice Chairman of the Sugar Crops Council, and the Chairman of the Sugar Crops Council.

ASHRAF MAHMOUD

Ashraf Mahmoud is the Chairman and Managing Director of Al Sharkeya Sugar Manufacturing - Al Nouran, a local and regional pioneer in the field of sugar agriculture and trading. In 1985, he founded Al Nouran Multi-Trading Company, LLC, and has since achieved successes locally and regionally. Agricultural activities commenced in 2008, followed by industrial activities in 2012. Mahmoud launched a 1.8 million-square meter integrated facility in Al Sharkiya governorate, with a phase one investment of EGP 3.5 billion to produce high quality beet sugar.

MARTIN TODD

Martin Todd is the Managing Director of LMC International, a UK-based economic consultancy specialising in agricultural commodities. At LMC, he is also responsible for the company’s extensive work in the sugar sector. Before joining LMC in 1990, he worked for four years for an international trade house, where he managed the company’s commodities research department.

MOHAMED ABDEL RAHEEM

PANEL 3 IMPROVING RESOURCE EFFICIENCY OF PRIMARY PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING OF THE SUGAR SECTOR

IGOR RYLIK

Igor Rylik is an expert in sugar and biogas industries and is the Founder and Technical Director of the engineering company Adverio RNK, LLC. His experience ranges from Plant Engineer to Technical Director of one of the biggest Ukrainian agri-industrial holdings operating 8 sugar factories, an oil-extraction factory and 250,000 hectares of land. He also fulfilled an EBRD supported energy efficiency program. Mr. Rylik’s specialization includes the reconstruction of sugar factories for fuel and improvement of operational efficiency, including renewable fuels production.

MONA MEHREZ

Professor Mona Mehrez is the Egyptian Vice-Minister of Agriculture for Livestock, Fisheries and Poultry Resource. Dr. Mehrez previously served as the Agriculture Minister Counselor at the Egyptian Embassy of Egypt in Washington DC. She also served as the Deputy Director of the Agriculture Research Center for Production, and the Director of the Animal Health Research Institute. She is also a member of the High-Level Panel of Experts on food security and nutrition at FAO, an expert in WHO and OIE on Avian Influenza, and an expert with the Arab Organization for Agriculture Development for Animal Health Research.

NABIL DARWISH

Dr. Nabil Darwish is the Chairman of the Egyptian Poultry Association. He also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Board Directors and Managing Director of the Misr Grandparents Co. (Cairo Poultry Group), as well as the Vice Chairman of the Board Directors and Managing Director of Cairo Grandparents Co. (Cairo Poultry Group).

TONY FREIJI

Tony Freiji is the President, Chief Executive Officer and Shareholder of the Wadi Group. A Lebanese national, Mr. Freiji holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering from the American University of Beirut and a Master of Science in Poultry Nutrition from Iowa State University.
