meet your neighbor

Clifton family

By Vanessa Clifton, Cave Creek Resident

The Clifton family of N. School House Road includes dad Scott and mom Vanessa. Avery (11) is their oldest child followed by sis-ter Kinsley (9) and brother Colton (7). They have four dogs: Daisy, Maggie, Cloie, and Dani. And they have four reptiles: Buster the desert tortoise, Sparky the leopard gecko, Scout the albino corn snake and Nimbus, the pastel ball python.

Family member professions: We own two helicopter compa-nies: Arizona Air Support which does private helicopter manage-ment and contracts, and Western Sky Helicopters which is a he-licopter tour and charter company. Additionally, we own Aerial Solutions, which organizes hot air balloon festivals like Balloon Spooktacular at Salt River Fields. Scott also continues his full-time job as a search and rescue pilot for AZDPS and is a sworn peace officer. I am a retired registered nurse who left healthcare to manage the family’s multiple aviation businesses.

How long have you lived in Cave Creek? The Clifton Family has been long established in Cave Creek. Scott went through all the Cave Creek schools, starting with the elementary school in the building at the corner of Cave Creek and Schoolhouse, to grad-uating from Cactus Shadows. We purchased our three acres of property in 2001 and completed the building of our home in 2002. Our children have been born and raised all in the same home.

What do you like best about your home? We have done three owner-builder projects on our home to develop it into what it is today. We love our backyard with the infinity pool, our view of Black Mountain out the front picture window, and our sunsets out by the outdoor fireplace.

What do you like best about living in Cave Creek? Cave Creek is more than just a place to live, it’s a way of life. I feel like we still

meet the

have a strong sense of community here. There is plenty of wide-open space, eclectic entertainment opportunities, the best dining options, and neighbors who will always be there when you need them.

Describe how you’re involved in the Cave Creek commu-nity. We frequently support local organizations through fund-raising donations. I am deeply involved in the local Girl Scout community. Both Avery and Kinsley are Cave Creek Rodeo Prin-cesses. All three kids are Cave Creek Rodeo Days Mutton Bustin’ champions! And they all love volunteering at Furrytail Life Bunny Sanctuary and Rescue.

Most memorable Cave Creek experi-ence? There is absolute-ly no way to pick out one most memorable Cave Creek experience; we just have way too many mem-ories in this community. Although it all started 21 years ago with a first dance at the Buffalo Chip during the then Fiesta Days Rodeo dance…

What do you like to do for fun? We love to hike the trails, swim in the summertime, go out to Bartlett Lake, and eat at our favorite restaurants. Our favorite family game is definitely Blokus. We also love a good backyard game of Bucket Ball and Ladder Ball.

Favorite traditions: We spend Christmas Day with extended family and always play a card game called Scat. It’s a winner-take-all game that involves three hours of laughing and quality time. The first

player out has to serve everyone dessert! Also, we love to entertain and appetizers are mom’s specialty. Under no circumstances are we allowed to have a party without Mom’s Famous Meatballs.

Describe your talents/hobbies. All three kids love to dance. Kinsley plays soccer and Colton is awesome at flag football. Both girls are excellent artists and have had their art featured at the Arabian Horse Show. Avery’s artwork was selected by a schoolwide vote to be featured on the school yearbook cover. I love to dance too, but now it’s mostly Zumba classes for exercise. Scott enjoys riding both mountain bikes and dirt bikes. He’s also extremely talented using the smoker

and preparing some of the best BBQ around! One of our favorite family hobbies is gardening; we have a huge garden where we grow lots of fresh fruit and veggies.

Something unique about you that not very many other peo-ple can claim: We love our reptile husbandry! We are constantly learning and researching ways to

provide the best habitats for them. Also, not many people can say they can just go jump in a helicopter anytime they want!

Person who has made a difference in your life? The great patriarch of the Clifton family Jerry Clifton. As a helicopter pilot, he influenced Scott’s career path. We are blessed that he lives on our property and is extremely involved in all of our lives. He spends lots of time with the kids—passing on a wealth of information.

Is there a story behind his name? Picking a name was an ab-normally long process. We went back and forth between a couple of names for almost two weeks and tried to analyze which name fit best with his personality. Once we finally narrowed it down to two, we wrote each name on a sticky note, put them on the floor and let Murphy pick his fate.

What nicknames do you call him? Murph, Smurf, Chicken, Floof, and Murffin (a play on muffin).

What’s the story about how he became yours? It took one Facebook ad and he was ours. How could you say no to this face?!

Does Murphy have any special talents? Sit, stay, shake, high-five, roll over and spin! But his high-fives are the cutest.

What game does he like to play? “How many socks can I hide from my hooman.”

What funny/weird quirks does Murphy have? Murphy sits and cuddles like a human child. He also likes to rub all over the blankets before settling down for bed. He dives headfirst and proceeds to rub his face and body all over the covers. When done, he parts the blanket and makes a little cocoon, then lays in it. It’s very odd, but equally cute.

How spoiled is Murphy? Probably more spoiled than my future children.

What’s a typical day for Murphy? Wake up, breakfast, long walk, quick nap, bark at hooman for ear scratchies, wait at re-frigerator for “icie” (ice cube), one more long nap, wait by door for hooman to get home, dinner, night walk, chase tail, bedtime.

How has he enriched your home/family? Murph is the biggest goofball around. While he knows a trick or two, we wouldn’t call him the sharpest tool in the shed…but his lack of common sense makes for a lighthearted day, every day.

What’s his favorite treat? Literally anything. If it fits in his mouth, he eats it…rocks included (we’re working on it).

Is there anything else we should know about Murphy? 90% fur, 100% love. Murphy came up with the math. Don’t ask questions.

home of the month

SouthwestMid-century modern meets

Santa Fe inside Madison Wetter & Skyler Whorton’s hillside home

What do you like best about living in Cave Creek? If we had to choose one thing we love most about living here, it would be the small-town feel that’s still close to great ame-nities. It’s so fun to go into the town core and shop at unique boutiques and dine in delightful restaurants. Everything is mom and pop and it’s a really great atmosphere to connect with people and the local community.

What’s unique about your home? It’s a traditional Territo-rial/Santa Fe ranch home—long and narrow, hugging the side of a hill dotted with dozens of towering saguaros—but with an interior that’s quite eclectic.

Tell us more about the interior design. The interior of our home is self-designed. We enjoy many different styles and aesthetics which, at times, proves challenging from a design standpoint. We love the mid-century modern era and collect art and trinkets on our travels. But we recognized that the true character of the home is Southwestern. From the kitchen cabinets that we painted to match the saguaros on the hill, to the Southwestern-themed paintings on the gallery wall in our bedroom, we have many touches inspired by the core home and its natural surroundings.

What’s the biggest renovation since you bought the house? We did a lot to update the house after we purchased it. Probably our biggest (and messiest!) undertaking were the bath-rooms. The bathroom scene was a lot like what you’d imagine a ‘90s home built in Cave Creek to be. There was a green toilet, a burgundy toilet, and an ivory toilet. It was a lot! We complete-ly redid all of the bathrooms adding new sinks and toilets that were more modern and used significantly less water—which was equally important to us.

Describe some of your favorite features of the house. The views take the cake when it comes to favorite features! With a west-facing view, we are lucky enough to get a front seat every evening. Almost every room in our house has some sort of fantastic view. The créme de la créme is, of course, the front patio by the spool. This is where we get the sunsets and everything from Black Mountain to Spur Cross Ranch. Anoth-er favorite feature would have to be our back patio area. We love to sit back there with the fountain on, a fire going, and a glass of red wine in hand.

What is your home’s conversation piece? Probably our front entrance. Mostly because it’s hard to find! We have quite a steep driveway and an inconspicuous front door found behind a courtyard gate only via the winding staircase of saltillo steps. It’s always interesting to see how people choose to find their way to us.

Describe any artwork in the house that is special to you. Almost all our artwork has sentimental value. In our

entryway hangs an oil portrait of my grandmother that I was given when she passed away. My grandmother was also a painter herself back in the day; we have a number of her Southwestern and Native American-themed oil paintings around of which we are quite fond. Generally, we like to have visual reminders of the things that are important to us. One painting that gets a lot of attention is the massive and colorful Frida Kahlo portrait in our dining room. We walked into Retablo in Cave Creek one day and

saw her. Our jaws literally dropped to the floor and I knew she would be coming home with us!

What makes you feel like the house is a home? We’ve touched nearly every square inch of this house and made it our own. I think seeing the progress and our decisions in each room are what make this house feel like our home. We also have family right down the road, great neighbors that we see regularly, and our two dogs that run the show. In addition to having a great space to live in, those things can go a long way in giving a house its spirit and comfort.

What’s the vibe in your “neighborhood”? It’s vibrant and friendly and full of wonderful people and wildlife. In addition to living in an amazing home, we are lucky enough to have a truly wonderful neighbor; we are always stopping to say hi and catch up or hosting cocktail hours and dinners. We are very lucky! There are also the regular hikers/walkers in the area that we see and wave to on a regular basis. It’s always enjoyable to see every-one taking in the beautiful scenery!

Eclectic

An Unexpected Curve Ball in 2020

Needless to say, this is not the article weplanned to include in this issue. Despite the difficulties, the uncertainties, and the concernwe were confronted with, we have all been given time to Pause. Pause and reflect on what is REALLY important in our lives, our families, our friends, our communities, and of course the kindness of strangers.

We were caught in a difficult position ofsupporting an increasing client base, and seeing a decrease in donations. It should be no surprise that this AMAZING community we live in, ourstaff and our volunteers stepped up!! You aretoo numerous to mention, but you know who you are. We will be forever grateful for yourgenerosity, your encouragement, and your love that enabled us to do what we do best, provide much needed support to the clients we serve at our Cave Creek and Black Canyon City locations. May you be blessed abundantly.

Sincerely, Pam DiPietro, Exec. Dir., the Staff, and the Board of the Foothills Food Bank.

community can have easier access to market essentials like eggs, milk, pasta, beef, toilet paper, bleach, etc. (Check their individual Facebook pages or call ahead for item availability.) Luzy (age 12) and Jeremiah Hernandez (age 15) started a Facetime reading buddy program for other kids in the community. Neighbors are doing everything they can to help local restaurants stay afloat by buying gift cards and ordering their favorite meals for curbside pickup. Anonymous donors are leaving gifts of toilet paper with uplifting messages all over Cave Creek in random spots. Paul Diefenderfer donated wood to a neighbor so they could fix up an outdoor playhouse for their kids. Black Mountain Tavern is using their distillery to pump out hand sanitizer for the communi-ty. Bertram Signs donated We Are Open For Business signs to the local essential businesses. Neighbors are randomly picking up the tab for other’s meals and drinks at local restaurants… It feels good to see some good in this mess.

Acts of KindnessBy Sarah Ikard, Publisher/Editor

It’s easy to see how much we need our community and how marvelously creative we can be about supporting each other through trying times.

Sophomore Angelique Cort from Cactus Shadows High School makes hundreds of masks a week for health care professionals and first responders. Tech4Life Computers & Web Sites has gone out of their way to help kids get set up with online school--and also businesses, families, and doctor offices with Zoom for staying connected with clients, loved ones, and patients. Shelby Voss kindly donated previously photographed pictures of the Clifton Family for this issue’s Meet Your Neighbor article. Neighbors on NextDoor are signing up for the Help Map--an interactive feature where neighbors in need can find other nearby neighbors willing to pitch in and help.
