ISSUE 486, JAN 2018 2Ph: 07 5536 2277 | twintowns.com.au2 | ISSUE 495, OCTOBER 2018

Late last year it was decided to introduce ‘Social Bowls’ at Club Banora. The reasoning behind the move to social membership was to encourage older members to continue playing the game at a reasonable cost.

To encourage this, a generous fee of $20 per year was introduced and social members would receive the same benefits as affiliated members. The only restriction was that they could not play at other clubs.

With 130 members, many whom are over the age of 80, it proved to be a popular decision with approximately 80 percent of members taking up social membership. It also encouraged people who had not played the

game before to come and enjoy the game of bowls in a very relaxed environment.

New members of all ages are welcome and we provide coaching. Enquires can be made by contacting the secretary on 07 5599 2338.

Most new bowlers play on Wednesday mornings where the dress is mufti, which means there is no Club uniform required and flat soled shoes are the only requirement. The Club also provides for affiliated members who can play at other Clubs and compete in outside events run by The District, States and the National Bowls Association of Australia.

Bowls is a challenging game and to

become proficient or a champion requires a lot of skill and hours of dedication. If you have seen it played on television, you will have noticed it is nothing like Ten Pin Bowling where you bowl the ball down an alley, sometimes at great speed.

To get a bowl near the Jack (white ball) you must have the right bias and weight; this is where the skill comes into play.

Twin Towns Services Bowls Club is different to other Bowls Clubs in that it does not own the greens. The greens are owned and maintained by Twin Towns Services Club who also give Men’s Bowls a subsidy each year for which we are most grateful.

The Club runs on money from

raffles and a generous number of sponsors. Sponsored Days are held throughout the year and Open Days attract visitors from other Clubs. All members benefit from our many special days which

we are able to run thanks to our wonderful sponsors.

Should you desire to participate in the game of bowls, then come and enjoy the hospitality at Twin Towns Services Bowls Club.

The NSW State Government in their wisdom created the initiative under The Gaming Machine Tax Act 2001 to allow Registered Clubs who earn over $1 million in gaming machine profit to direct a percentage of taxable revenue back into communities.

ClubGRANTS funds must be for projects and services that contribute to the welfare and broader social fabric; aimed at improving the living standard of low income and disadvantaged people from specific categories.

The irony is that this is what clubs have always done, but it became law. ClubsGRANTS are predominately NSW centric as funding through grants is distributed on application to not-for-profit organisations by NSW Clubs generally in NSW only, with some very limited exemptions.

Under the Act, a tax rebate is made available to registered clubs of up to 1.85% of a club’s gaming machine profit over $1 million during a “tax year”. Under the Act a further .4% of clubs gaming profits over $1 million dollars if a “tax year” is paid into the ClubGRANTS fund on behalf of the club to be used for large scale projects or services associated with sport, health or community infrastructure, as determined by the Minister.

To qualify for the gaming tax rebate of 1.85%, clubs must allocate at least .75% of those funds over $1 million to Category 1 purposes with the remainder allocated to Category 2 (maximum 1.1%).

Excess Category 1 expenditure may be used to cover any shortfall in Category 2 but the reverse does not apply. Most clubs as “not-for-profit Community Clubs” tend to extend community donations beyond ClubGRANTS applicable expenditure through general donations to community.

Last year registered clubs allocated more than $100 million to deserving causes just through the ClubGRANTS scheme. Local committees represented by clubs in the local government area, along with Council and Welfare groups, determine where funds are most needed for the most benefit.

Funding is available under three separate categories:

Category 1: Supports community welfare and social services; community development employment assistance activities; community health services; and projects aimed at improving the living standards of low income and disadvantaged people.

Category 2: Provides funding for general community development and support activities, such as Junior Sport.

Category 3: Is a state-wide fund that supports large scale community infra-structure projects. Grants are available in sport, emergency and disaster relief, and arts and culture infrastructure as determined by the Minister.

Key dates to remember for applicants under the ClubGRANTS Scheme are the grants year runs from the 1 September to 31 August in any year. Most grants are therefore distributed between February and July, but you can apply at any time through the year with the details in the ClubsNSW website.

Twin Towns Services Clubs and Resorts, on behalf of all members, determined the organisations shown here to be recipients of our 2017/18 ClubGRANTS and general donations policy.

Good health to all and I look forward to catching up around our Clubs and Resorts.

The best part of these upcoming changes to is that you can redeem points for gift cards all year round.

As a special offer for members during December each year, points can be used to purchase Twin Towns gift cards with a minimum $20 points spend.

Over coming months, many of the prizes at the Clubs will become ‘points prizes’ so it will be even

easier to build up value to spend at the Club or purchase gift cards.

members joined the Chaplain’s Challenge, Juniors NRL Footy Tipping Comp with a twist.

Throughout the comp, any participant who beat Chaplain Marty’s score in any given round received a bonus point.

First place in the comp went to Dave Martin who scored 350 Twin Towns dollars to spend at the Club. Second place and 150 Twin Towns dollars went to Steve McMenamin. Losers will have to wait until next year for another shot at the Chaplain’s Challenge.

The weekly comp created the perfect opportunity for Chaplain Marty to meet many of the regulars at Juniors and explain more about his role with the Salvation Army and the purpose of his chaplaincy at Twin Towns.

Marty has recently moved into his new Chaplaincy Support Services office, located opposite the Harbour Stage at Twin Towns.

He is available with a listening

ear and a willingness to help in any appropriate way. Marty is happy to provide help where he can, or help you find any assistance you may require or desire.

Californian rock band Smash Mouth brings their pure fire-power, energy and wit to the Twin Towns Showroom on Friday 9 November.

In the ‘90s, Smash Mouth came from nowhere with their hit single Walkin’ on the Sun. The band became an international sensation, immediately shooting to number one on the Billboard charts and selling over three million copies, just in the US.

In the two decades since, Smash Mouth has not slowed down. In fact, they are as vital and vibrant as ever.

Smash Mouth crossed over to the film world, providing the musical heart of the

soundtrack for Shrek with their huge hit, All-Star. They also made a cameo appearance in the movie Rat Race.

In recent years, Smash Mouth has entertained troops in such places as

Japan, Guam, Guantanamo Bay, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Tickets for Smash Mouth are $69. Book at www.twintowns.com.au, phone 1800 014 014 or book on the Twin Towns app.

FISHING CLUBWelcome once again fellow fishos. The Winter fishing season has been a bit of an up and down affair. The August competition saw very little action in the catch department with a roll out of 12 members across the weekend. Ferdi Van De Wettering jumped on 1st spot with seven fish, followed in second place by John King and Tina Davis in third. A total of 17 fish made up the haul. Twin Towns Fishing Club runs its competitions once a month from 3pm Friday ‘til weigh in at 12pm Sunday. We would love to hear from you if you are looking to join the Fishing Club. We are a great bunch of people who love flicking a line and taking in the great outdoors. For more information on club

activities and membership, contact President Rod Davis on 07 5524 1160. Until next time, tight lines anglers.

MASTERS SWIMMING The months are slipping by quickly and a few of us are still hibernating, even though the pool is a gorgeous temperature. Swimming carnivals with other Masters clubs winds back a bit over Winter. There have been some great events held: Northside 25 August at the Valley Pool in Brisbane was well attended; Noosa 15 September gave those competing a chance to spend a nice weekend away. Coming up on the 13-20 October, Alice Springs Masters Games held at their $11 million Aquatic Centre with plenty of time to sightsee and going up in an air balloon is a must to see the real red outback. The Sunshine Coast on 27 October and of course, the Pan Pacs, 7 -10 November at the Gold Coast Pool. This is the Commonwealth Games pool so quite an experience for those competing. Our social outing to the Tivoli Show and lunch at Twin Towns was very entertaining as usual.

BRIDGEThe Bridge Club is running a promotion to encourage new members and to retain existing members. Membership fees have been discounted for new members joining the club and existing member renewals. There will also be two sponsored

competitions with sub-stantial prizemoney over next three months during Spring. The club was sad-dened by the recent death of Lea Verdickt, a longstanding member and important con- tributor to the club com-mittee over many years. She was a great support to John Verdickt who was club president for 11 years. Lea frequently brought delicious cakes, slices and biscuits for morning tea. Lea and John Verdickt were also very supportive of new players. Lea had an interesting life, being born on a barge in occupied Belgium during the war. The German soldiers frequently searched the barge looking for smuggled weapons and contraband. Lea and John married in Belgium, later moving to Denmark, South Africa, then to Australia.

EUCHRE & 500 CLUBOur games are held upstairs at Twin Towns Juniors which is located on the corner of Leisure and Fraser Drives, Banora Point. 500 is played on Tuesday nights and Euchre on Thursday nights, both commencing at 7pm year-round. Fees to play are $3 members and $4 non-members. There are prizes for placegetters and a Lucky Door Prize on each card night. New residents to the area and holiday makers are most welcome to come along and join in our games and if you come 15 minutes before our starting time, you can have a few practice hands. The winner of 500 for the month of August was Judy Kenny with Barbara Lewis 2nd and Denise Monaghan 3rd. In Euchre the winner was Pat Lesina with Nev Lesina 2nd and Elaine Denman 3rd. Enquiries contact Pat Lesina on 07 5534 6188.

TENNISWatch out for the next Trivia Night at Club Banora. Details will be displayed on the noticeboard. It will be held in early November. The cost is $5 and players are asked to bring a plate to share. Some questions are a challenge for some, easy for others and somewhere in the brain for a few. Come along and enjoy a friendly evening and meet some of our tennis members.

RUNNERS & WALKERSOur Summer program is now up and running. Check out the calendar on Facebook or our website. We are participating in the Kids In Need Dragon Boat races again this year. Save the date – 28 October at Jack Evans Boat Harbour. If not paddling, come down and cheer us on. We will have our tent set up and will be easy to find with our newly designed banners in our club colours of blue and white. We are a friendly group of runners and walkers and new members are always welcome. We meet three times a week and cater for all ages and levels of fitness. We vary the routes and distances and like to work together achieving goals. Come run or walk with us for up to three times before you need to commit. We also enjoy social interaction outside the meets. Check us out on Facebook or our website t tscrunnersandwalkers .org. For enquiries contact our Secretary Tracy Mo on 0414 590 940.

GARDEN CLUBGarden Competition Awards will be announced at the meeting on 2 October and a special morning tea of sandwiches and cake will be provided in celebration of the effort made behind the scenes and the extra work it takes to spruce up a garden to be judged. Vegies grow in pots too, so give yourself a challenge and prepare a bed or pot by digging in compost and fertiliser. Try either seeds or buy seedlings, water every day and nurture them along. Basil is a rewarding plant to grow. Pick the leaves and freeze them if you have too many. Pansies look very cheery so plant some in little gaps so all their faces share a smile or Marigolds with their bright oranges and yellows. No reason why they should not cheer up the vegie patch. Interested in gardening? Why not visit Club Banora Garden Club. Next meeting is 2 Oct-ober at 9.45am. Enquiries contact President Maria on 0448 531 055.

SENIORS SOCIAL CLUBThe next meeting will be on Monday 15 October at 9am in the Visions Room on the Mantra side of Twin Towns. The meeting will begin immediately after the bus passes are handed out. Selling at the next meeting - a day trip going north on Monday 22 October. No trip 1 October as it is Public Holiday. All trip tickets sold at our meeting; all trips start at 7.30am. Phone calls Tuesday to Friday 10am-4pm; Welfare Del 07 5534 4756; Tour & Social Organiser Dorothy 07 5590 9301.

LADIES BOWLSThe Star of the Green competition has finished for the year with Karen Watson winning her third and permanent star. Well done Karen! Our bowlers have competed in the annual Robina Shield challenge on 27 September and travelled to Beaudesert for their challenge on 4 October.  Robyn Ralston and Veronica also enjoyed celebrating President Lyn's Day at Tugun Bowls along with several other Clubs. The rain miraculously held off to allow us to bowl almost a full game. All these events are a great opportunity for members to visit and play on other greens, as well as supporting our neighbouring clubs.  We have more invitations upcoming from Burleigh Heads and Tweed Heads. For your calendar, Friday 26 October will be our yearly Fundraising Day at Club Banora. Donations of blouses/tops, books/puzzles, bric-a-brac, plants, handcrafts and baked goods will be most welcome as well as volunteers on the day.

DIGGERS SWIMMINGA good roll-up of members is requested at the pool for the start of our Summer competition on 7 October. Those of you that have been taking a break from swimming during the Winter months may need some practice swims before the North Coast/Far North Coast championships which we will be hosting on 17 November at Oasis Pools. As usual there will be championships for men and for women in five year age brackets as well as the handicap events with both genders in together. Once again we are appreciative of the help and co-operation of our mother club Twin Towns. Good to hear that Barry Jurd is out of hospital and out and about. Our treasurer Virginia Rijavec has returned from her road trip to far flung parts of Australia and Peter Romano has flown overseas.

TTs supports Junior Baa Baa’sTwin Towns is a proud supporter of junior sport in the region, including our local kids’ footy clubs.

The Coolangatta-Tweed Barabarians Junior Rugby Union Football Club (better known as the Baa Baa’s), have been running onto the field each week during the season wearing the Twin Towns logo on their jerseys.

Like most of our local footy teams, the Baa Baa’s have hung up their boots for the season but Twin Towns looks forward to seeing them back on the field in 2019, once again wearing their Twin Towns jerseys.

CLUBBANORA

This month on the big screen, see an emotionally gripping biopic, an edge of your seat survival movie, a visually stunning outback tale and an action movie based on a favourite Marvel superhero.

Colin Firth stars in The Mercy, the story of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst, who leaves his wife Clare (Rachel Weisz) and their children to circumnavigate the globe on a half-finished boat. This movie is a captivating and moving tale of man versus wild.

Walking Out is a cinema-tographically beautiful film about David, a city kid who visits his estranged live-off-the-land father to go on a hunting trip. After a brutal encounter, father and son must fight for survival through the snow ridden mountains to safety.

Set in the Northern Territory frontier of the 1920’s, Sweet Country is the story of an aboriginal farmhand who shoots a white man in self-defence, sparking a manhunt through the treacherous Australian country.

Black Panther tells the tale of T’Challa, the freshly crowned king of the advanced African nation of Wakanda, who is infused with the ancestral powers of his

nation’s panther god. After Wakanda is threatened by an old enemy, the king calls on his powers to defeat his enemy and secure the safety of his people.
