is the islands busiest port and most

populous metro area. This workaday

town of approximately 20,000 people

is the first city visitors to Maui see after

touching down at nearby Kahului Airport.

deep-dredged shipping harbor, Kahului

is Mauis retail center, with malls such as

Queen Kaahumanu Center. Kahului also

Saddles and Sculptures Inspired by Mauis paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys), groups can amble along the slopes of Haleakal on horseback where plan-tations of the past once thrived. Some time to walk around the artsy town of Makawao will give them a chance to watch local glassblowers and painters as they work.

Windows to the Ocean The focus at the Maui Ocean Center is on the marine life of the Pacific Ocean. A private after-hours event at this aquarium, with its walk-through deep ocean experience, gives attendees access to beautiful underwater vistas without the need for wetsuit and flippers.

molokais 88 miles of coastline includes the worlds largest sea cliffs, rising 3,900 feet above the ocean surface, and one of the most isolated peninsulas in all of hawaii, which affords views of the island that are unforgettable. Getting there is a thrill, but not one for everyone: the miles-long wind-ing trail down the islands northernmost cliffs to Kalaupapa national historical Parktaken on foot or mulehas 26 switchbacks. historic intrigue adds to the experience: Kalaupapa is where, in the 19th century, saint damien famously treated the quaran-tined sufferers of hansens disease.

a nine-hole plantation-style golf course set into molokais cliffside is played at leisureand, for those who like, without rules or the keeping of score. Kayakers will want to paddle at a relaxed pace, too, in the waters off molokais southern coast, where theyll likely spot sea turtles. those waters are also wonderful for snorkeling, with hawaiis longest continuous reef (measuring 28 miles) offering brilliant dis-plays of corals and reef fish.

the welcome from molokais residents is friendly and warm, but there are few ame-nities on the island to cater specifically to tourists and only 73 total overnight rooms are available across the island. dont expect that to change any time soon: the love here is for the casual lifestyle and the pristine land, and therein lies molokais appeal as a travel destinationone that allows visitors to truly and completely be in the moment.
