Mauis reputation as one of the worlds most desirable travel destinations owes much of its acclaim to Haleakal.

the volcanos eruptions one million years ago shaped an island spectacular with natural beauty. It formed the deep and

lush ao Valley and the 1,200-foot-high

needle-shaped rock that rises from with-

in it. It shaped a coastline fringed with

an impressive diversity of beaches, and

crafted the pools of Oheo, where fresh-

water streams cascade from tier to tier in stunning fashion.

Today, long after its erupting has ceased,

Haleakal continues to infuse Maui with

    magical moments. Every sunrise viewed

from its more than 10,000-foot summit is a

kaleidoscopic picture of brilliance. The star-

ry night enveloping its peak is supernatural.

and to catch sight of the rare silversword flower that grows only on Haleakals

slopes and can take up to 50 years to

bloomwell, its as magical as it gets.

Beyond its inherent beauty, there are

other reasons that Maui has been con-sistenly ranked as the Best island in the World. There are well-preserved historic

    villages, humpback whales breaching in

full view just off the coast during winter months and activities of all sorts accessi-ble to travelersfrom watersports to shop-ping to golf. The interests and indulgenc-

es of every visitor to the island are catered to with aplomb; it is an island of accessi-ble activity, whatever the inclination.

Hospitality hits a high note on Maui with its world-class resort properties catering

to both business and leisure travelers in grand style. Resorts and meeting venues

are continuously employing new strate-gies to reduce, recycle and reuse. Energy-

    saving examples abound in operations,

services and building design and collec-tively keep the island green.

Dedicated and trained meetings profes-sionals, high-tech capabilities, unique

    activities, island cuisine, championship

golf and a fascinating culture are among the reasons why a visit to Maui can recharge both mind and body. Little won-

der that planners and clients around the world have selected the island for their meeting, convention or incentive trip.

Maui: The experiencea multitude of travel experiences are afforded on Maui. Those who want the

ultimate in beachfront lolling can be catered to with resort extravagance.

    Ultimate fantasy swimming pools, high-

end dining and world-class spas provide

    amenity-rich experiences that rank among

    the best on the globe.

There are 14 well-manicured golf cours-

es on the island and 30 miles of kahakai (beach) to enjoy. No one beach is alike on

Maui, with Kapaluas D.T. Fleming Beach,

    Kanapali Beach, Wailea Beach and

Kapalua Bay Beach among the most pop-

ular. There are sands of every color, warm

MauiTheres a reason why American author Mark Twain once said:

I went to Maui to stay for a week and remained five. Mauis landscape offers a kaleidoscope of verdant rainforests, towering mountain

views and golden strands of beaches. From the striking black sands of Wainapanapa State Park in East Maui to the fine powdery granules

along the southern shore, Mauis 30 miles of beaches consistently rank as some of Americas Best.

    tide pools, protected snorkeling lagoons,

and big waves for surfers, windsurfers and

    boogie boarders.

    Mauis multiple options for shopping

    gratify travelers beyond expectation, too.

There are upscale retail shops at resorts,

mom-and-pop stores and designer bou-tiques from which to choose. Kahului

is the islands busiest port and most

    populous metro area. This workaday

    town of approximately 20,000 people

is the first city visitors to Maui see after

touching down at nearby Kahului Airport.

Besides being home to industry and a

    deep-dredged shipping harbor, Kahului

is Mauis retail center, with malls such as

    Queen Kaahumanu Center. Kahului also

contains worthwhile attractions, includ-ing the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, one

of the islands premier venues for con-certs, art exhibitions and resources for

    Polynesian culture.

For a glimpse at Mauis past, Lhain is

a historic whaling village on the National

Register of Historic Places with sites

including an old prison, seamans hospi-tal and inn. Lhain is also where whale

    watching excursions leave port.

over the waves at Hookipa Beach Park. Then travel along the scenic road to Heavenly Hna in the east.

Saddles and Sculptures Inspired by Mauis paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys), groups can amble along the slopes of Haleakal on horseback where plan-tations of the past once thrived. Some time to walk around the artsy town of Makawao will give them a chance to watch local glassblowers and painters as they work.

Windows to the Ocean The focus at the Maui Ocean Center is on the marine life of the Pacific Ocean. A private after-hours event at this aquarium, with its walk-through deep ocean experience, gives attendees access to beautiful underwater vistas without the need for wetsuit and flippers.

Fresh PicksUpcountry Maui is bathed in sunshine. Beyond highlighting Mauis spectac-ular landscape, those rays of the sun also make this area on the slopes of Haleakal one of the most fertile agricul-tural expanses in all of Hawaii. The result has made Maui an epicurean delighta destination where farm-to-table dining has long been the style, and visitors flock from around the world to attend its renowned food and wine festivals.

Upcountrys food bounty comes from its goat cheese dairy, winery and myri-ad farms, which grow such ingredients as lavender, breadfruit and, naturally, the sweet Maui onion. Organized tours of these upcountry spots, the farmers market, and Mauis pineapple and cof-fee plantations are popular with visiting groups. Back at the resorts, well-known local chefs can lead cooking demonstra-tions and engage group members in competitions to create the best dishes using Maui-grown ingredients.

Measuring uPMaui is a diverse group of destinations, each sounding exotic and each living up to its impeccable reputation. There are several areas of the island with resort

clusters to cater to meetings, conferences and incentive groups. Kapalua is a place to celebrate food and wine, golf, culture and snorkeling. In Kanapali and Mkena,

theres bliss to be found on the exquisite beaches. Wailea has classic resorts and ritzy shopping, and Hna is a heavenly

and old Hawaii enclave in northeastern

Maui, accessible only via a long and winding road.

Over 12,000 hotel and condominium units are available on the island of Maui. Indoor and outdoor function space totals thousands of square feet. Mauis largest grand ballroom, at 26,700 square feet, can host a banquet for 1,620. For larger events, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului can accommodate 5,000 in an outdoor amphitheater setting.

getting in and getting aroundFlights by national, regional and charter air carriers make traveling to Maui easy.Maui airports include the main airport in Kahului, served by local and national car-riers, and smaller local airports in Kapalua and Hna. The flight from Honolulu takes

under 45 minutes. There are direct flights to Maui from the U.S. Mainland from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle, among other cities.

InCenTIve InSPIrATIOnSHouse of the Sun The ultimate group adventure: sunrise on the top of Haleakal, Mauis over 10,000-foot dor-mant volcano. Watch dawn arrive, have a picnic breakfast, and slowly wind and coast back down the slopes on bicycles.

Bottoms Up of the ocean, that is. Catamaran to Molokini Island, don snor-kel or dive gear, and take the 250 fish species challenge. The center of Molokini is home to a reef that provides great underwater views, since visibility can be up to 150 feet on clear days.

Views from the Top To see Mauis water-falls, valleys, mountain peaks, andwhen in seasonhumpback whale population from helicopter heights is marvelous.

Intimate events and meetings at the legendary shores of Kapalua Bay

    Cliff House at Kapalua Bay

Stunning Pacific views from a majestic oceanfront setting and pristine sand beaches lay the groundwork for

memorable events and productive meetings. The resort offers a 1,342-square foot Sunset Patio and enhances the

natural beauty with lushly landscaped outdoor venues and intimate private dining spaces. The only venue of its

kind, the 500-square foot Cliff House, is a Kapalua landmark where events flow from the charming interiors to a

wraparound lanai perched over the sea.

Once cOvered with pineapple plantations, now Lnai is sweet on splen-doran enclave of exclusivity ideal for executive retreats and vIP gatherings. This is the Hawaii where visitors can partake in

archery, croquet and sporting clay, in addi-tion to the temptations of the spa, tennis courts, high-end eateries and two top-ranked, expert-designed golf courses.

But should attendees want to break from

lavish indulgence, they can switch gears to rugged, off-the-beaten-path adventure. On this 141 square-mile island with a population of just 3,000, there are 80,000 acres of countryside to explore with scenery that is simply spectacular. The changes in elevation alone bring about awe-inspired reflection. The back-country

hiking paths, off-road jeep journeys and

    mountain biking excursions also unveil

ancient historic sites, relics of villages past and special sites like Keahiakawelo, or

the Garden of the Godsa moonscape of boulders built up over millions of years. Beneath the waters surface, scuba and

snorkeling yield views of shipwrecks and

    dazzling scenes of sea life.

Lnai City is where shops and eateries

can be found, in buildings that date back

to plantation times. Local artists showcase their work, and there is a cultural center

with exhibits on Lnais history and heri-tage. Lnai City is the islands only town,

but its one more than the number of traf-fic lights to be found.

There are two luxurious resorts on Lnai

that work in tandem: one is located on

the coastline of Hulopoe Bay, and the

other is up on the hillside where the views are decidedly differentand so is the temperature. Guests have access to the amenities of both, and there are several indoor and outdoor function spaces to bring everyone together. For intimate celebrations on a lawn overlooking the

    ocean, Lnai enthralls; for engaging

    groups in intensive, distraction-free work

    sessionsit excels.

LnaiLegend has it that hundreds of years ago, man-eating ghosts inhabit-ed this mysterious island. Today, the Pineapple Island is home to only approximately 3,000 residents and not a single stoplight to be found.

Bordered by 1,000-foot sea cliffs and populated by spotted deer, big horn sheep, Rio Grande turkeys and a spectacular variety of rare flora and

fauna, Lnai is the place to visit for privacy and tranquility.

The smallest inhabited island in Hawaii, Lnai

entices visitors with its beaches and tranquility.

MolokaiOnce known as ina momona, the bountiful land, Molokai offers a portal

to what Hawaii might have been like in a bygone era. Its a reward for serenity-seeking travelers, a place to unwind away from the rigors of

urban life. On Molokai, where the coconut trees tower over the build-ings, you could actually be alone on a golden sand beach or in a forest of ironwood trees. A two-mile highway traverses the island, and you may

discover that youre the only one on the road.

On this intimate island that is the birthplace of hula, a more tradition-al way of life guides the pace of daily life. Cultural practices are upheld, the hawaiian language is amply spoken, and the strumming of the ukulele gives melo-dy to the ocean breezes. to travel here is to travel back in time.

embracing a molokai state-of-mind is easy for visitors to do. this is a destination where the stillness of the surroundings prevails clear the mind of disruption... and experience total tranquility. its also a place with much to explore: the islands 206 square miles are full of geographic and historic richness. there are fishponds dating back 800 years and a valley with ancient heiau (place of worship). When passing through rustic Kaunakakai, the islands main town, residents will wave as you pass by. thats aloha.

molokais 88 miles of coastline includes the worlds largest sea cliffs, rising 3,900 feet above the ocean surface, and one of the most isolated peninsulas in all of hawaii, which affords views of the island that are unforgettable. Getting there is a thrill, but not one for everyone: the miles-long wind-ing trail down the islands northernmost cliffs to Kalaupapa national historical Parktaken on foot or mulehas 26 switchbacks. historic intrigue adds to the experience: Kalaupapa is where, in the 19th century, saint damien famously treated the quaran-tined sufferers of hansens disease.

a nine-hole plantation-style golf course set into molokais cliffside is played at leisureand, for those who like, without rules or the keeping of score. Kayakers will want to paddle at a relaxed pace, too, in the waters off molokais southern coast, where theyll likely spot sea turtles. those waters are also wonderful for snorkeling, with hawaiis longest continuous reef (measuring 28 miles) offering brilliant dis-plays of corals and reef fish.

the welcome from molokais residents is friendly and warm, but there are few ame-nities on the island to cater specifically to tourists and only 73 total overnight rooms are available across the island. dont expect that to change any time soon: the love here is for the casual lifestyle and the pristine land, and therein lies molokais appeal as a travel destinationone that allows visitors to truly and completely be in the moment.

Riders looks towards Molokai sea cliffs, and kala and Huelo islets.
