District Governor—Allan McDonald District 201 N2 of the International Association of Lions Clubs
MD 201 N2 NEWSLETTER—ISSN (Online) 1837-5898
Greetings from District Governor Allan
January 2014—Service through membership
explain the difference.
Mt Druitt has been conducting the Deaf Camp for High School students
for approx 20 years. The NSW Dept of Education now organises the
Camp in conjunction with MT Druitt Lions Club. This camp brings
together students who are deaf or hearing impaired from High
Schools over NSW & ACT. There are many students who fit the
criteria from our District N2. The cost for sponsorship is generally
about $300/student or whatever your Club can afford if you are able
to help.
District N2 conducts a Camp for Primary School students within the
District. The Camp is organised by the Dept of Education, with
teacher Libby Lamont from Milton Primary School as coordinator.
If Clubs wish to donate they do so via a voluntary contribution of
$100 on our dues notice. Money is sent to District Treasurer Danny
who forwards it to Narellan Lions Club to distribute to the Camp
coordinator.
I commend both Camps to you if you are able to support both it
would be greatly appreciated by both groups.
May I congratulate the District Leadership Team of PDG Ray Strong, Lion
David Robson, 2VDGE Sharon Bishop for their efforts in coordinating the
training for my year as District Governor. They together with members of
the Training team made up of Lion John Flarrety, PDG Carl von Stein,
PCC Ian Gammage, PDG Geoff Hobart & Lion Peter Howe all have
worked hard to achieve excellent results.

Now that the Festive Season is over and
many Clubs are back assisting their com-
munities it is time to refocus and adjust
our program for the final 4 months of the
Lions Year. To all the Club Presidents and
Membership Chairman who revealed their
plans to me during the Club visits. How
are you going with your plans? It is not
too late to get your plans back on track. A
quick call to PDG Ray Strong chairman of
the Leadership Team or Lion Catherine
Gallagher chairman of the Membership
Team could easily change things around
for you .I am still waiting and happy to
pay for my side of the deal.
Congratulations to those Lions members
who were honoured on Australia Day by
their community or Councils. Can mem-
bers of your Clubs please forward infor-
mation & photos Lion David Robson.
Members of the District who are Face-
book users and wish to contribute with
articles and photos could you please send
them to Lion Syd Hyett of Narellan Club.
At this time I only have 1 Club to visit,
Helensburgh. 1VDG Lorraine has com-
pleted her Clubs, & 2VDG Sally has 2
Clubs to go. Thank you to all the Clubs
who have accepted the DG Team this
year. Congratulations to Lorraine & Sally
on their efforts, I am sure both have
gained a lot from this experience. What
they have gained will help them through
their terms as District Governor in the
next 2 years. 2VDGE Sharon will be a
part of the DG Team for 2014-15 & is
watching and waiting in the wings.
Clubs will be receiving requests for sup-
port of the Lions Deaf Camps in the fol-
lowing months. It is important to realise
which Camp you are supporting. Let me

Christmas
bachelors
love Lions
The Lions Club of Canberra Kambah be-
came the go-to destination for Canberra
bachelors and others unfamiliar with wrap-
ping Christmas presents.
For the third successive year, Kambah Li-
ons Club members and supporters ran a gift
wrapping stand for Canberra’s busy Tug-
geranong Hyperdome.
The wrapping service, which ran over five
weeks leading up to Christmas 2013,
proved popular with shoppers keen to put
attractive packages under the tree to open
on Christmas Day.
For a gold coin donation the Lions wrapped
gifts ranging from the easy to the bizarre.
Shoppers with jewellery and other small
objects were easily served, while basket-
ball, puffy pillows and other outsized items
challenged local Lions.
The gift wrapping service proved popular
with boyfriends and bachelors keen to
avoid the last minute jitters that come with
wrapping presents for girlfriends, mums,
and wives, late
on Christmas
Eve.
Busy mothers
and profession-
als also valued
the chance to
have their gifts
wrapped while
thye caught up
over coffee in
nearby cafes,
and the service
was a boon for
workers buying
secret Santas for office parties.
Canberra Kambah Lions Club also raf-
fled a trailer stocked with $2,500 worth
of handyman and other goodies, and
sold Lions’ famous red, green, and blue-
boxed cakes and puddings.
The club’s Christmas efforts raised nearly $13,000 with the money going to support
Lions foundations, major projects, local charities, and families in need over the
coming year.
Shoppers showed their appreciation for the Lions’ Christmas vibe with many thank-
ing them for its continuing contribution to local causes.

Message from LCIF Chairperson, January
2014: Lions Projects Save Sight, Support
Youth with LCIF: There’s no better way to
start the year than by saving sight and support-
ing youth. This January, members of the Lions
Quest and SightFirst advisory committees
came together to discuss new Lions projects
for these programs. I am always impressed by
the commitment and dedication Lions show in
their project ideas towards helping their com-
munities through LCIF grants.
The cornerstone of Lions’ service is saving sight, and there are some exciting
new SightFirst projects that will be implemented in the coming year. Lions and the
African Institute of Tropical Ophthalmology in Mali will train ophthalmic surgeons

and nurses, as well as assistant optometrists, over the course of five years. In India,
diabetic retinopathy will be treated through an infrastructure development grant that
enables the Lions Eye Hospital, Nidadavole, to provide diagnostic and treatment
services.
In addition to these life-changing SightFirst grants, Lions Quest grants were
awarded. In Virginia, USA, Lions achieved great success with a community partner-
ship grant in 2012, implementing Lions Quest in local schools. Through a new
grant, Lions will expand the program’s social and emotional learning methods to
new school districts. Students in 22 elementary schools in that region are already
learning positive life skills through trained school counselor-taught Lions Quest
classes. Now even more children will have the chance to do so, thanks to Lions’
outreach and efforts.
Lions also support youth through measles-related activities. World Immunization
Week in April presents an opportunity for projects that raise awareness of measles
and the importance of vaccinations. You can learn more about this event below.
There are so many projects of all sizes being completed around the world through
Lions and LCIF. As a Foundation, we have supported more than 11,000 grants
worldwide since 1968! I encourage you to keep up the good work. In our global
community, we have the power to make a difference, no matter the size of the pro-
ject.

Passionate ambassador to LCIF:
Lions’ long history of improving vision is
what helped William Wildhack (photo to
right) decide to become a Lion 20 years
ago. “What attracted me to Lions is the
emphasis on sight and what we as Lions
do for those in need. Without corrective
lenses, I am about 20/1000. Eye sight has
always been very important to me, probably because mine isn’t so good,” Wildhack
explained.
Wildhack, an attorney and IRS agent, understands just how important combating
vision loss is, as well as how treatable it is for the majority of the world’s people
with sight problems. It is this understanding that prompted Wildhack to first become
a Melvin Jones Fellow (MJF) with a US$1,000 donation, and then a Progressive
Melvin Jones Fellow (PMJF), with subsequent US$1,000 donations. “I became a
PMJF because I know that every minute of every day, someone goes blind, and 80
percent of all blindness is preventable. The need is great, and one way I can help is
through LCIF.” Wildhack serves as a passionate ambassador for Lions clubs and
LCIF in his community; he has even persuaded several non-Lions to become Melvin
Jones Fellows.
Wildhack’s club (Arlington Host Lions Club, District 24-A, Virginia, USA) be-
came very involved with supporting SightFirst with the first fundraising campaign,
and continued raising funds for Campaign SightFirst II (CSFII). “Through CSFII,
we raised funds by meeting with individuals or other groups face to face, through
local cable TV, speaking to Lions clubs, other groups and especially my clients,”
said Wildhack. And for Wildhack, the rewards of supporting LCIF and Sightfirst
keep paying off: “It feels really good to know that by raising US$57,000 for Sight-
First, our Lions club saved more than 9,500 individuals from blindness. In fact, I
still get choked up when I read or hear updates about the individuals reached
through our SightFirst program.”
