The top 18 cm comprises dark brown SILTY CLAY WITH NANNOFOSSILS AND DIATOMS, and thin beds of CLAY WITH NANNOFOSSILS in Section 1. Light mottles from bioturbation in Sections 1 and 4 comprise CLAY. Green, glauconitic laminae appear to be nascent hardgrounds. ic

PYRITIC CLAY WITH SILT ANDPLANT DEBRIS and SILTY CLAYWITH PLANT DEBRIS

Major Lithologies:This interval comprises black to darkgray PYRITIC CLAY WITH SILT ANDPLANT DEBRIS interbedded with darkto medium greenish gray SILTY CLAYWITH PLANT DEBRIS. Locally, thingreen, greenish gray laminations arepresent which contain fine-grainedglauconite. These are especially welldeveloped in Section 3, 40, 54, 63,and 84 cm. Pyrite, occurring asframboids and clay-sized crystals, isdisseminated throughout and locallycomprises up to 25% of sediment.Microfossils and microflora are absentfrom these lithologies except inSection 5, 40-55 and 130-150 cm.

Description

CLAY and NANNOFOSSIL CLAY

Major Lithologies:The core is made up of an irregularalternation of darker greenish gray(5GY 4/1 or 5G 4/1 to 5GY 5/1) CLAYand lighter greenish gray (5GY 5/1 to5GY 6/1) NANNOFOSSIL CLAY. Bothare slightly bioturbated throughout.The darker clay often makes up 1-cm-thick layers and irregular mottles atthe boundaries between the twolithologies.

Minor Lithologies:Abundant grayish green (5G 4/2)layers consisting of NANNOFOSSILGLAUCONITE CLAY WITH FORAMSAND MICRITE occur throughout thecore. These layers are up to 2 cmthick, coarser and more induratedthan the surrounding sediment andprobably represent hardgrounds. Theyare particularly abundant in Sections 2through 5 where they mostly occurwithin the darker clays. Dark greenishgray (5GY 4/1) structureless layers ofCLAYEY NANNOFOSSIL OOZEWITH FORAMS with a slight brownishtinge occur in Section 3, 67-75 and113-122 cm. In the highly disturbedtop of Section 1, 5-10 cm, there is alarge, irregular spot of dark gray (N3)pyrite claystone similar to Core 159-962B-2H.

CLAY WITH QUARTZ SILT andCLAY WITH ZEOLITE

Major Lithologies:Dominant lithology is greenish gray(5GY 5/1) CLAY WITH QUARTZ SILTand light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) CLAYWITH ZEOLITE with some enrichmentof iron oxides (goethite). The lowerpart of the core, downcore fromSection 3, 83 cm consists of greenishgray (10Y 4/2 to 10Y 5/4) moderatelyburrowed CLAY WITH QUARTZ SILT.Burrows are generally darker andcontain pyrite and iron oxides.

Minor Lithologies:The upper part of the core is darkgreenish gray (5GY 4/1), bioturbatedCLAY WITH PYRITE AND QUARTZSILT. This clay contains fewglauconitic bands and is also presentin Section 5, 0-20 cm. A few cm-thicklayers of olive brown (2.5 Y 4/4)GOETHITE CLAY are present inSection 2, 22-150 cm. Section 7 andCore Catcher consist of structurelessgrayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) CLAY WITHGOETHITE. Some disseminated pyriteoccurs throughout the core and onelarger concentrated spot of pyrite andgoethite is present in Section 3,114-118 cm.

CLAYSTONE WITH QUARTZ SILTand CLAYSTONE

Major Lithologies:This core consists of CLAYSTONEWITH QUARTZ SILT, which occurs asgoethite-bearing, light olive brown toolive brown (2.5Y 5/4 to 2.5Y 4/4)horizons alternating with olive-colored(5Y 4/4 to 5Y 5/3) horizons, fromSection 1 to Section 6, 105 cm. Thelowermost part of the core comprisesolive gray to grayish green (10Y 5/2 to7.5GY 6/2) CLAYSTONE. The core isslightly bioturbated, and subhorizontalto steeply dipping burrows are eitherfilled with pyrite or goethite. Pyrite alsooccurs as disseminated framboids ornodules. Shell fragments, mostly offoraminifers, occur in CLAYSTONE.Sections 5 and 6 have microfaults.

General Description:In Section 5, several spots andburrows in CLAYSTONE WITHQUARTZ SILT have the grayish greenhue of CLAYSTONE. The age of thecore is unknown.

Description

PORCELLANITE WITH ZEOLITEAND CLAY

Major Lithology:Pale green to grayish greenPORCELLANITE WITH ZEOLITEAND CLAY, with sub-mm laminae ofglauconite (darker green) and pyrite(purple ZEOLITIC CLAY). Glauconite-rich laminae appear to be hardgroundsrather than pellet lags. Rip-up clasts ofglauconite hardgrounds occur fromSection 4, 40 cm, to the base of thecore. This sediment is slightly toheavily bioturbated, with faint burrows.Some burrows are composite; theseare usually brown and richer insiliceous microfossil fragments(PORCELLANITE WITH CLAY ANDZEOLITE); Chondrites and Planolitesare also present. From Section 2, 134cm, to base, some burrows, 2 mm to 1cm wide, are filled with tabularmarcasite crystals.

GLAUCONITE are faintly bedded.Glauconite specks are sparselydisseminated in Sections 1 to 4. Pyritespecks and nodules are presentthroughout the core. PALYGORSKITECLAYSTONE WITH GLAUCONITE atSection 4, 40 to 60 cm, appears to beflow-in.

Minor Lithology:Pale green (10G 6/1) CHERTBRECCIA occurs at Section 4, 92 cmto Core Catcher, 23 cm. CHERTBRECCIA comprises clasts of white(N9) and medium dark gray (N4) tograyish olive green (5GY 3/2) CHERTand pale green (10G 6/1) claystone.The genesis of CHERT BRECCIA isunknown, but possibly due to debrisflow or due to drilling disturbance.

General Description:The age of PALYGORSKITECLAYSTONE and PALYGORSKITECLAYSTONE WITH GLAUCONITE atSection 1, 0 cm to Section 4, 92 cm isunknown.

Description

CHERT and PORCELLANITEWITH PYRITE AND CLAY

Major Lithologies:This interval has been severelybrecciated by coring and consists offragments floating within drilling flour.Fragments recovered include darkbrown-gray, PORCELLANITE WITHPYRITE AND CLAY which exhibits thindiscontinuous laminations 1 to 3 mmthick, and CHERT. This chert variesfrom dark brown-black to clear, andincludes replacive chert and chertwhich fills fractures. These fractureshave, in turn, been fractured and arefilled by light brown Porcellanite.Fossils are very rare and includespicules and fragments of radiolariansand diatoms. Plant debris and pyriteare distributed throughout, includingwithin the black CHERT.

Major Lithology:Only a few fragments were recoveredfor this interval which contains darkgray to black CHERT which is rimmedby white PORCELLANITE. Within theCHERT, some fragments of glauconiteand recrystallized fossils are presentsuggesting a replacive origin. Nosamples were taken at this interval andthe age is not known.

TheDOLOMITIC PORCELLANITEcontains about 20% authigenicdolomite which is distributedthroughout the opaline matrix of thePorcellanite. Despite thetransformation of opal A to opal CT,this interval is not well lithified and itsage is unknown. One sample wastaken for paleontology.

Major Lithologies:Drilling breccia comprising 14 cm ofbluish, PALYGORSKITE CLAY occursover a rubble of black, MANGANESEHARDGROUND in Section 1. Section2 comprises a 3 × 4 cm IRONOXYHYDROXIDE NODULE, yellowishbrown, with a black (phosphatic?) rim.Cracks within the nodule are infilledwith the same black material. Thenodule is embedded in a drillinginduced matrix of GLAUCONITEPELLET-RICH CLAY. The age of thecore is unknown.

Description

CHERT

General Description:The core consists of two pieces ofCHERT. The first piece is graded andlenticular laminated, and the laminaeare disrupted by burrows. The coarsergrains are largely replaced radiolariansand rounded quartz grains. Thesediment is fractured. The secondpiece of rock is brownish black in color.The age of the core is not known.

Major Lithologies:The core consists of an irregularalternation of poorly indurated, darkgreenish gray (5G 4/1) CLAYEYSANDSTONE, dark olive gray (5Y 3/2)SILTY CLAYSTONE, and structurelessor brecciated, dark olive gray (5Y2.5/1) CLAYSTONE WITHNANNOFOSSILS, MICRITE, ANDSPAR CEMENT The induratedCLAYEY SANDSTONE in Section 2,23-44 cm, has a sharp, scoured base,and displays grading above and faintlamination toward the top, which isalso sharp. This and most othersandsone beds appear to be the basesof turbidites. The upper parts of theBouma-sequences have possibly beendestroyed by drilling.

Very dark gray (5Y 3/1) SILTYCLAYSTONE WITH NANNOFOSSILSoccurs scattered as thin laminae inSILTY CLAYSTONE throughoutSection 1. Pieces of veined CLAYEYSANDSTONE occur in Sections 1through 4. A thin, discontinous layer ofblack BITUMINOUS CLAYSTONE isintercalated within the graded SILTYCLAYSTONE bed in Section 2, 23-44cm.

There have been more thanone episode of veining, and the veinsare filled with calcite. Calcite is alsodisseminated as a spar cement in thelower part of the core. Major Lithologies:Light gray (N7) SILTSTONE WITHQUARTZ SAND, CLAY AND MICRITEand brownish black (5YR 2/1) SANDYSILTSTONE WITH CLAY ANDPYRITE are parallel laminated at amm-scale. Cross laminae are presentat Section 2, 40-43 cm and at CoreCatcher, 0-5 cm, and are probably dueto wave rippling. Both lithologiescontain 3%-5% nannofossils and/ormicrite.

Minor Lithology:Brownish gray (5YR 4/1) QUARTZSILTSTONE WITH DOLOMITE isstructureless and contains 20%dolomite rhombs.

Section 2, 130-150cm is more clayey and in Section 4,90-115 cm and Core Catcher, thesandstone shows small-scale cross-bedding and lenticular bedding seenas isolated ripples. One piece in thisinterval shows syn-sedimentarybrecciation. Calcite veins are presentin Section 1, 82-84 cm, Section 2,50-53 cm, Section 3, 85-90 and130-132 cm, and in the Core Catcher.

These lithologies,occurring in graded units, includestructureless to rippled coarsesandstones overlain by finelylaminated to massive siltstones andclaystones. Calcite-filled veins occurlocally in this interval. Organic debrisand pyrite, concentrated in the silt-and clay-rich lithologies, imparts adarker, brown coloration. Drilling hasseverely brecciated this interval. Aclast of chert, most likely due todownhole contamination, occurs at thetop of this core.

Major Lithologies:The core consists of interbeds ofmedium gray to brownish gray (N5 to5YR 4/1)) LIMESTONE and brownishgray (5YR 4/1) QUARTZ SILTYLIMESTONE. Although both lithotypesare laminated, QUARTZ SILTYLIMESTONE is slightly more massive.LIMESTONE is characterized by analternation between medium gray andbrownish gray laminae, with the latterbeing richer in quartz and organicmatter. Beds are steeply dipping atsome horizons, e.g., Section 1, 78-84and 122-129 cm, and the CoreCatcher. There is usually an upwardgradation from parallel laminated bedsto cross-laminated beds. Numerous,thin veins are filled with calcite, whileslickensides occur in Section 1, 62-65

Minor Lithology:In Section 1, 52-59 cm, limestone withundulose bedding is cut by a 5-mm-wide fracture, which is filled withMICRITIC LIMESTONE.

LIMESTONE WITH QUARTZ SAND,CLAYSTONE WITH MICRITE, SILTYLIMESTONE and DOLOMITICCLAYSTONE WITH NANNOFOSSILS

Major Lithologies:This interval comprises gradedsequences of: 1) gray LIMESTONEWITH QUARTZ SAND overlain by; 2)gray to brown LIMESTONE; and then3) a dark brown, massive DOLOMITICCLAYSTONE WITH MICRITE.Sequences range in thickness from 10to 50 cm, and may not contain all ofthese lithologies. Cross-laminated,rippled beds are present only withinthe LIMESTONE WITH QUARTZSAND. Fine laminations are presentwithin the LIMESTONE, which markslight variations in the abundance ofcarbonate versus sand. Scouredbases to these sequences are presentat Section 1, 52 cm and Section 2, 15and 60 cm, but are not always visible,with transitions sometimes indicatedby thin beds of LIMESTONE WITHQUARTZ SAND. Rippled, cross-laminated coarser lithologiesoccasionally exhibit syn-sedimentaryconvolution of bedding, such as atSection 1, 40-45 cm. The calcareous,micritic component of these lithologiesincludes nannofossils andstructureless microcrystallinecarbonate. Dolomite appears to bediagenetic with silt-sized rhombsdistributed within claystones. Calcite-filled veins are locally present, Section1,15 and 130 cm. A massive tolaminated SILTY CLAYSTONEWITH NANNOFOSSILS is present atSection 1, 65-100 cm, which containsa minor amount of zeolite. Drilling hasproduced significant fracturing of thisinterval, but the sequence of lithologiesis still well represented.

Major Lithologies:This core comprises fining-upward

sequences composed of coarserrippled DOLMITIC MICRITICLIMESTONE WITH CLAY and finerlaminated CLAYEY MICRITICSILTSTONE WITH NANNOFOSSILS.The dolomite does not appear detrital(i.e., rounded or abraded) in smearslides, and is presumably authigenic.Brecciated zone occurs in Section 1,and is cemented by calcite. Calcite-filled veins occur throughout the core.

Description

CLAYEY LIMESTONE andCALCITE-CEMENTED CLAYSTONE

Major Lithologies:This core comprises very dark olivegray (5Y 3/1), sometimes faintlylaminated, CLAYEY LIMESTONE withsome pieces displaying a transitioninto slightly darker (5Y 2.5/1),structureless CALCITE-CEMENTEDCLAYSTONE.

Minor Lithologies:Several larger pieces of fine-grained,olive gray to gray (5Y 5/1 to N5),CLAYEY SANDSTONE WITHCALCITE CEMENT display parallel,cross, and wavy lamination throughoutthe core. The coarsest parts of thislithology are faintly graded. Calcite-filled veins are common in thesepieces. Grayish black (N2),structureless CLAYSTONE WITHCALCITE CEMENT rarely occurs, butmight constitute a significant part ofthe drilling flour.

Description

CLAYEY LIMESTONE WITHORGANIC DEBRIS, DOLOMITICLIMESTONE WITH QUARTZ SILTand CLAYEY DOLOMITE WITHMICRITE

Major Lithologies:This core consists chiefly of well-laminated, very dark gray (10YR 3/1)CLAYEY LIMESTONE WITHORGANIC DEBRIS, with thin interbedsof massive to faintly laminated, gray(N5) DOLOMITIC LIMESTONE WITHQUARTZ SILT. These horizons aresteeply dipping. Massive, dark gray(10YR 4/1) CLAYEY DOLOMITEWITH MICRITE occurs in Section 1,and Section 2, 80-90 cm. Calcite-filledfractures and veins are common in thecore. In Section 1, 116-130 cm andSection 3, 130-136, there is intensefracturing and slight brecciation.Undulose lamination due to soft-sedimentary deformation is presentmainly in the steeply dipping horizonsof the core.

Minor Lithology:A piece of BRECCIA is present inSection 1, 0-15 cm. It consists ofclasts of the three major lithologies in acalcite matrix. It is characterized bymany veins and fractures.
