McMaster’s General Pediatric Fellowship Program offers additional training in preparation for a career in general and academic pediatrics. Although not accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, it offers a one or two-year program to achieve fellow’s goals and interests. The General Pediatric Fellow will rotate through the various clinical settings including but not limited to: general pediatric wards, pediatric emergency, infectious disease, child development, child abuse and neglect, and subspecialty outpatient clinics. Outpatient continuity fellow clinics take place over the course of the entire fellowship. Elective rotations, subject to the approval of the fellowship director, are also available and encouraged to assist with personal goals and interests. Research contribution and/or research project is expected and supported. There are a number of courses and programs offered within the McMaster University or nationally that fellows are encouraged to undertake, depending on their academic interests. These are meant to improve and hone fellows’ teaching, research or leadership skills. The in- hospital on-call commitment is around 4-6 calls per month, with two off-call months per year. McMaster University Post-Graduate Education Office will issue a certificate upon completion of the Fellowship. Fellows foreign to the Canadian system will have standardized early rotations to assist with familiarization of the hospital, pediatric residency, and fellowship program and expectations. Evauation is based on College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) Pre-Entry Assessment Program (PEAP) and Assessment Verification Period (AVP).
