New Pastor Called

After many months of prayer, research, interviews, and trial sermons, the Pastor Nominating

Committee offered the call to minister at McAllister Church to Reverend James Moss. Rever-

end Moss accepted that call on May 6. Here is his biographical sketch:

REVEREND JAMES EDWARD MOSS

Jim Moss was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, the son of a Presbyterian minister and a Pres-

byterian church administrator. He spent most of his childhood in Greer, South Carolina, and

graduated from Riverside High School. As a youth, he ran track and cross country, played saxo-

phone in the band, and competed on the Academic Bowl team. He was confirmed at Fourth

Presbyterian Church in Greenville, South Carolina.

Jim attended Davidson College, where he began as a chemistry major and finished as a music

major. Working at Presbyterian camps during his college summers, he began to feel a call to

ministry, which led him to enroll at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia a year

after his college graduation. At Union, he earned a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in

Christian Education. During that time, he met his wife, Margaret.

After seminary, Jim was ordained as the Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Sa-

vannah, Georgia. He went on to serve as a solo pastor at churches in South Carolina and Virgin-

ia, before accepting a call to be a new church development pastor in Summerville, South Caro-

lina. With that call completed, Jim is now feeling called to return to a more traditional pastorate

at McAllister Memorial. He feels that his experience as both a solo and a new church develop-

ment pastor is ideal for the calling McAllister feels to grow and reach out to its neighborhood.

Jim and Margaret have two sons, Benjamin and Samuel, who are 12 and 13 years old. Jim’s

hobbies include running and cycling, gardening, and coaching youth soccer. He is excited about

returning to Peaks Presbytery, and the entire family looks forward to enjoying the natural beau-

ty and small town charm of the Covington area.

A Congregational Meeting will be held the morning of July 14 to officially elect Reverend

Moss as pastor at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church. All members are urged to attend

this important meeting.

received donations totaling $2,552 to

restore the Pulpit Bible. This is $352

more than the estimated $2,200 cost

TEEN EVENT!

The Food Pantry is in need of volunteers—

male and female—to keep the pantry running

smoothly. Volunteers are most needed on

Wednesday mornings to process delivery, and

Thursday mornings to distribute the food. The

work is not hard, and the fellowship is great!

P.S. They also need plastic bags.

June 16th and July 21th and August 18th will be

our monthly COPE Food Collection Days. The

demand for food continues to increase and

food prices continue to rise. Because of this, it

is becoming more difficult to provide food for

the needy families in our community.

All types of non-perishable food is needed

in the food pantry. Please help the food pantry

remain well stocked for those in need.

2019 Water Filter Challenge We are all spoiled. Turn on the tap and we have drinkable water. But for those who live in Gua-

temala, this is not the case. We are asking every church in the Presbytery of the Peaks to contrib-

ute to the purchasing of 2 water filters so that water filters can be given out by CEDEPCA to

those in need. Each filter costs $50. If you can’t manage a $100 donation, please consider an

amount you can comfortably donate. Thank you for your help in this life saving endeavor.

Please make checks payable to Blacksburg Presbyterian Church and put Water Filter on the memo line, and mail to:

Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, 701 Church Street, Blacksburg, VA 24060-5213

Presbyterian Women

Honorary Life Member

Anita Noel Rice was awarded the

Honorary Life Membership for 2019

by the Presbyterian Women of McAl-

lister Memorial Presbyterian Church

on Mothers’ Day.

Anita is a lifelong/third generation

member of McAllister Church. As the

daughter of George “Buster” and Joy Noel, the grand-

daughter of Percy and Beulah Newcomb, Anita learned the

importance of being involved in church activities. To this

day you will find Anita teaching Sunday School, working

with youth groups and Bible School, attending Circle #4

meetings, helping with receptions, fellowship and bereave-

ment meals, just to name a few.

On June 2, 1973, Anita married the love of her life, Bobby

Jo Rice . They have a son, Brian, and one grandson, Hud-

son. She is affectionately known as Meme by the “3 M’s”;

Mason, Maddox, and Mallory Hale.

Many of you remember Anita from her professional life as

a teacher. She taught at Jackson River Vocational Center,

Covington High School, and Boy’s Home. Since her re-

tirement, she has also been a substitute teacher at CHS.

In addition to church activities, Anita can be found with

retired teachers, Covington Fire Department Ladies Auxil-

iary, her sorority sisters, and, as a breast cancer survivor,

fund raising to find a cure and help fight breast cancer.

Congratulations, Anita!

Letters from Heaven for Everywhere and for All Time

Dear 7, 8, 9th Grade Class,

I want you to truly know how much fun it was creating the world you now live in. It was-

n’t a great task for me, for all I did was speak the WORD and in order everything came into

place. All of you know by now that I made all things and lastly I made man to take care of all

my creation. I also know you would need my help in a lot of ways as time passed by. Each one

of you whether you are aware of it is vitally important to me. I must have your word that you’ll

help me, just as Noah promised he would do when people in the world were warned by me that

if they didn't repent from sin I would destroy them with a flood. I told Noah that if people from

his family and their heirs continued to sin the next destruction would be with fire.

GOD

To Whom it may concern,

Please try and help me by telling others about my faithful promise to save them from the

arms of Satan if they followed my commandments. These ten statements were developed with a

lot of love put into each one and aren’t hard to abide by if everyone will trust me.

All of you are very precious to me and I love you so much that I asked my only begotten

son to be crucified so you may live with me in Heaven when I call you from this life. My son

Jesus took all your sins with Him to the cross where His blood washed you clean and now lives

to speak with me about you for a gift of life with us in Heaven.

If I can be of service to you, will you please call on me anytime, anywhere. I am faithful

to keep my promise in anything you ask. My number is TOLL FREE—please call.

Yours from Heaven, GOD

P.S. This gift is for this class and to all others that trust Him!

Written by Norwood Tingler from God’s point of view.
