President’s Messageby Kevin Arburn

Kevin Arburn, President Mercedes-Benz Club of America | Kansas City Section

Kevin Arburn, President

By the time you read this the holiday season will be in high gear and we’re pleased to remind everyone that we’ve pinned down the date for our next Winter Gala: January 10, 2015. Once again, we will be gathering at Tatsu’s as we did last time – following the time-honored tradition of “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” Things went so well we thought it was worth repeating!

As we head on into 2015, your board of directors and officers are working on the schedule of activities for the year. We try to maintain a balance of both driving and social opportunities, but we can always use fresh ideas. Please do not hesitate to offer sug-gestions via email [via [email protected]], by comment on our Facebook page [MBCA Kansas City] or by attending one of our board meetings – held after each monthly breakfast meeting. Any and all members are welcome and we’d love to hear your ideas.

The holidays too remind us of all the things we have to be thankful for: family, friends, health, opportunities and so much more. We in the Kansas City Section hope that you will all take the time to back off the throttle of daily life for a while and reflect on the bless-ings that we all have and enjoy the holiday season to the fullest.

November First Saturday BreakfastIn November we hosted Jim Schmidt, who spoke about the work Uplift does in our community to support the homeless. Jim brought several guests, both former and current homeless who each spoke about how Uplift has helped them and the importnance of Uplift to the homeless in Kansas City. Our members brought an abundance of food and clothing along with monetary donations to support their effort. Jim and everyone at Uplift is very grateful for your help.

October First Sunday DriveSunday October 5th provided to be a beautiful day for the last Sunday drive of the year. The group took a scenic route and ended their drive at the Filling Sta-tion BBQ in Lee’s Summit. The old service station is now a BBQ resturant and is decroated with old pumps and many other automotive items. On the right, the group is gathered around the table enjoying lunch.

Note from the New Editor of Der Benz!

I thought I should take a moment to introduce myself, or at least my new role with the Kansas City Section of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. I am now, in addition to being the club secretary and past president, the new editor of our newsletter, Der Benz! I have edited one issue of Der Benz previously, several years ago when the previous editor, Bob Smith, was on an extended vacation. I must admit I am not a writer by trade, I am however comfortable with computers and the technology used to create this publication.

With that thought in mind, I hope you’ll be patient with me as I’ll be learning as I go along here. If you ARE a writer, let me know, we’re always looking for content to include here. I hope that in the next few months or so that I can make a few changes, I have some ideas in mind, but I don’t want to fix it if it isn’t broken. Feel free to let me know what you like and what you don’t like about Der Benz, send me email at [email protected] or give me a call.

John Foster (left) looked pleased when his 2006 E350 took a first in class.

Ken Meisner’s as-new 1969 280SL captured a first in the vintage sports cars class.

Joe Weinrich brought his beautiful all-black 1993 300CE to the show and went home with a first among modern sedans.

Ed Rose’s flawless 190SL was twice awarded. He went home with a first among historic SLs and was an overwhelming People’s Choice winner. Was it the matching leather luggage?

John Moffitt brought his stunning black 2008 CL550 and took a second in contemporary sedans/coupes.

Bob Poduch received a second among contemporary SL roasters with his 2003 SL500. Bob won’t hesitate reminding you his SL’s rare color is diamond silver metallic, not brilliant silver!

This was Ellen Murphy’s first concours in her recently acquired 1982 European-spec 280SL. She took a second among the iconic R107 SLs.

Norm Kressmann’s 1976 450SL is always a contender, as is his collection of historic and vintage Cadillacs!

Ann Mellina swept two classes with a first for her 1996 S500 (contemporary sedans) and another for her 1995 SL320 (contemporary SL roadsters). Not bad for her first concours!

Past President Mark Moody took home a first in the modern sports cars (R107s) with his classic red 1988 560SL.
