Once again this year AristocratMotors hosted the “Art ofYOUR car” event at theirdealership. This event, whichfeatures multiple car clubs, displays cars from all thedifferent marques offered byAristocrat. Our clubparticipated again this year bybringing approximately 25member cars to the show. Many others were thereincluding MG's, Ferrari 's,Porsche and Jaguar. Aristocratsponsored food trucks, alongwith l ive radio broadcasts for afestive atmosphere.

A sunny day, with pleasant temperatures and a nice breezebrought lots of people to the event. With around 200 cars ondisplay, there was lots to see. We want to thank all of ourmembers who took the time time to come out and display theircars. Also our thanks goes to Aristocrat for hosting this event.

At the risk of repeating myself,I ’m going to repeatmyself…again. The KansasCity Section is in dire need ofhelp – your help. In eachissue of Der Benz we highl ightour events, ouraccomplishments, our plans, and also in each issue we askfor help with planning these events. So far, it’s sti l l just our coregroup of people that are trying to make things happen. MarkMoody does an exceptional job of putting together issue afterissue and final ly he has been recognized by the national office: atthe May breakfast meeting I had the distinct honor of presentingMark with an award from MCBA for his work on Der Benz: anHonorable Mention for Printed Newsletter. I ’ l l say it again: WELLDONE. (Lateness of this issue not withstanding. Ed.)

Mark is one of a handful of individuals who keep stepping forwardyear after year to accept an officer position and sit on the board ofthe Kansas City Section. At present, we sti l l have some majorshoes to fi l l now that two of our ‘cornerstone’ board members,Joyce and Dudley Smith, have rel inquished their seats on theboard after years and years of stel lar contributions to the KansasCity Section. I have only been around since 2007, but I cantruthful ly say after several years of experience and observationthat our section would not be what it is today without Joyce andDudley. They have been so instrumental in bringing so manyevents online and bringing so much prestige and recognition toour section that they deserve a lot more accolades than I canpresent in this l ittle column. Please take the time the next timeyou see Joyce and Dudley to just say “thanks”. They deserveeveryone’s respect and recognition.

Now, back to the business at hand. I f you truly enjoy being aKansas City Section member, if you enjoy the monthly breakfastmeetings, First Sunday Drives, the 3rd Monday Spaßnacht drive& dine nights, the annual defensive driving school and autocross, the annual Smith Rallye – now accompanied by a picnic, theWinter Gala and the other things that we try to offer, pleaseconsider pitching in. These things DO NOT happen by

The Art of the Machine 201 6

June 5, 201 6 was this year’s date for the Mercedes-Benz marque for the Art of the Machine display atthe City Market in KansasCity, Missouri. The KansasCity Section has participatedin this event annually since2009, but this year’s eventmight be the last for asomewhat unusual reason:The City Market has becomeextraordinari ly successful. While this is fantastic for theCity Market – one of the bigsummertime destination areasin the city – it did not proveconducive to parking cars.We were told two days beforeour turn on the 5th that:participation would be limitedto no more than 20 vehicles,

and that parking would not be allowed under thesheltered areas that we would typical ly occupy.Bad news on very short notice.

Undaunted, six Mercedes-Benz braved the heatand congestion and yet another last-minuteparking change to be parked right next to theKettle Corn trai ler. Oh yes: we moved the date upthis year on purpose to avoid the hotter weather ofJuly / August, only to have the temps climb closeto 90 on our day at the City Market. Every shelterarea was ful l of vendors and farmers sell ingeverything from melons to cut flowers. The usualflea market set up in front of the Steamboat ArabiaMuseum building was also packed with sel lers andbuyers. All the restaurants were doing a briskbusiness.

There at the north end of the complex, wedgedinto our l ittle corner, the Mercedes-Benz peopleclung to whatever shade we could find and spentthe day watching over the cars and answeringquestions from a curious public. Al & Mary Marks’Pagoda was probably the hit of the show –personally I was a nervous wreck after watchingthe cars after some of the other members tooktime out for lunch on the other side of the market. One kid with two handfuls of cotton candy gotperi lously close to the Marks’ bright red Benz unti l I stepped in between Wil l ie Wonka and the cars. Ialmost sold Gary LaBelle’s SLK while he was at lunch – several onlookers thought al l the cars werefor sale. Another time I turned back to check on my 560SL to find three teenage girls draped over thealuminum hood taking selfies. My expression alone was enough to make them scatter. Like I said, itwas a long day.

All things considered, it was a good day. We had fun, got a l ittle sunburned, enjoyed the ambiance ofthe City Market and spread the word that Mercedes-Benz is the marque for the long haul. The sixcars we had there represented about a fifty-year span of Daimler-Benz finest – a good display forsuch a small venue. Due to all of the changes in the structure of the Art of the Machine, we may notbe back, but it was good to see the City Market become so vibrant. – Kevin Arburn, Kansas City
