Tatsu’s Restaurant inPrairieVillagewasthesiteofthe2014WinterGalaonSaturdaynight,January11th.Themem-bersenjoyedwonderfulappetiz-ersandtastybeveragesduringagoodsessionofminglingandchatting about everything fromsportstotheweather.Mosttalkseemed tobeabout theexpe-riences with the Kansas CitySectioneventsduring theyearof2013.And,therewasalottotalkabout.TheDefensiveDriv-ing and Autocross, Art of theMachine,Art of the Car, Mind-Drive, Oktoberfest Concoursed’Elegance, Sunday Drives,Spaßnacht,justtonameafew. Aslideshowcontinuedrunningduringtheeventsothatallcouldcatchuponmemoriesofeventstheyattendedand/orseewhatothersdidthatonemayhavemissed. Wewerehonoredwiththeatten-dance of Bill Denton, MBCA Treasurer,andhiswifeJeanniewho traveled fromtheirhomeinOakbrook,Illinoistobewithus. ThefoodatTatsu’swaswonder-ful. Appetizerswereplentifuland tasty.Theshrimpwasespeciallygood,servedin a delicious sauce that defies descrip-tion. Thedinnerwas thesit-down-and-be-servedstylewithbread,salad,entreeoftenderloinofbeefwithawrapofpas-tryontheedge,bakedsalmon,mashedsweetpotatoandmixedvegetables.Des-sertwasservedtoo.Manyofusagreedthatthefarewasassimplyoutstanding. DudleySmithpresentedatrophytothewinnersoftheinfamousSmithRal-lyetoDonnaandJohnRyan.Theywonitbecause,accordingtoJohn,Donnain-sistedthathedriveinreversegearwhen“necessary”inordertominimizethemilesdrivenovertheactualeventmileage.

Anothermilestone ispassed, or, shouldwesayLarryBarnes’1997 S320 reachesanother “kilometer-stone”? One mil-lion kilometers isequal to 621,371.19miles. And Larry’sMercedes-Benzcon-tinues to performflawlessly. To rec-ognize the achieve-ment,Larrywaspre-sented a certificate from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Cen-ter USA proclaimingthe million kilome-ters achieved by hisS320.

Anewyearhasarrived,and theboardand Iareworkingonplans for this yearsevents.We’relookingforwardtoseeingyouataSaturdayBreakfast,aSundayDrive,aSpaßnachtoroneofourotherspecialeventsthisyear.Ifyouhaven’tbeentoanevent,comejoinus.Asalways,we’realwayslookingforfreshideas,andextrahandstohelpout.LasttimeIwrotetoyouaboutaproposaltohostStarFestin2014,MBCA’snationalevent.TheboardandIsatdownandworkedtotryandreconcileourproposalwithinputfromthenationalboard.Afteralotofdiscussion,ourboardcametotheconclusionthatourresourcesarenotuptothetaskinthetimegiventohostasuccessfulevent.Asaresultweformallywithdrewourproposaltothenationalboard.Ourenthusiasmforthiseventisnotdiminished,andhopefullytherewillbeanopportunityinthefuturethatwillworkforus.

Meeting Tom Strongman,
Automotive featurewriter for many motor-carpublicationsandtheKansas City Star, wasourspeakerattheFeb-ruary breakfast meet-ing. Despite the over-night sleet storm therewereabout15memberspresent to see Tom’sslide show. Besidesmotorcars, Tom’s otherpassioninlifeisphotog-
raphy,andhisskillswereevidentinhisoutstandingphotosofcars. Tom presented three separate features. The first; classiccarsthathehasphotographedovertheyears.Tomknows the names and details about all of them, some ofwhichareveryrareandrelativelyunknowntotheaveragecarbuff. Hissecondpresentationwasofvintagehot-rodcars.Chromeisamustfornearlyeveryvisiblecomponentin the engine compartment. Chrome skull-like forms arepopularonthegearshift,hoodornament,etc.ThethirdfeaturewasofsomeofTom’sfavoritenon-auto-motive photos. He showed wonderful landscape photostakenaroundthecountry.Tomsaidhisprimaryjobinlifeisbeingthefamilyhistoryphotographer.

The Kansas City Section will sponsor the MidwestRegional Defensive Driving and Autocross School atMetropolitanCommunityCollegeinIndependence,Mo.,onSaturday,August2,2014.Theeventwillbeginwithclassroomtrainingonvehicledynamicsanddrivingtechniques. WewillthenmovetotheMCCdriverstrainingfacilitya fewblockseastof thecollege for “hands-on”defensivedrivingfollowedbytheopportunitytosharpenyourskillsonalowspeedautocrosscourse.Experiencedinstructorswill
provide in-car training fordriverson thedefensivedrivingcourseandontheautocrosscourse. Driversof all ages, including youngdriversage16and older with a valid drivers license, are encouragedto attend. Some auto insurance companies will reducepremiums for those drivers who complete this course.Adinneratalocationtobedeterminedisplannedfortheeveof the event on Friday night. Activities of club membersinclude wheel to wheel racing, RallyCross, Auto Cross and performancedriving.Manyofthedriversintheclubrank just below Professional in theirdriving skills. The clubowns its owntimingandscoringtruck.Someeventsadjusttimeforthetypeofcarandtheweight of the driver to even out thefactorsandachievearesultbasedonpureskill. Theywilleven race in therainusingspecial“raintires”. The club holds 12 autocrossevents a year at locations such astheLincoln,Nebraskaairport,Hallett,Oklahoma and Heartland Park inTopeka.ThelargesteventistheSCCAPro Solo Nationals at Mineral Wells,Texas.
