6 From Mrs Fox
Lord As we celebrate another Christmas
Help us to live each moment gratefully. May we have the faith to trust in the gifts you have given us? May we have the hope that overcomes the dark thoughts that
sometimes cloud our vision? May we have the love that makes our world a better place?
To all members of the Sacred Heart School Community and especially de-parting staff, families and students I wish you God's blessing as you celebrate Christmas with family and loved ones. To Mrs Claire Watson, Ms Gemma Matheson, Ms Neerissa O'Dea, Mrs Jocelyn Bozikovic and Mrs Margaret Valentine I acknowledge and thank you for your professionalism and contribu-tion to our school community. I conclude this school year with mixed emotions as I move to serve Catholic Education in a
different capacity during 2017. I hold with me the knowledge that Sacred Heart is a vibrant
centre of faith and learning where the community of students, staff and parents strive to work
in harmony and common purpose. We are a school which values and respects the rights of
each individual to bring the best they can to every situation and opportunity be it small or
large and I look forward with anticipation to being part of this community again in 2018.
Principal
Mrs Alaniz wishes all the Sacred Heart community a

From Mrs Halliday in the LIBRARY
This Christmas, May the Lord bless and keep you! The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace!! Peace, Love, Joy and Hope to all our families this Christmas and New Year.
A massive THANK YOU to the many fantastic Mums, Dads and Grandpar-ents who generously gave of their time to cover books and offer assis-tance in our Library this year. We re-ally need your help at different times in the year and are truly grateful for your generous response.
HAPPY HOLIDAY!!
To the Students and Families of Year 4W
Thank you students for being a fantastic group of young people at Sacred Heart. I have enjoyed my involvement with you. I have observed how much you have evolved into mature, responsible young people who are particularly passionate about helping and looking after one an-other.
Fantastic year groups generally mean fantastic parent support. My Year 4W parent group was terrific with its in-volvement in excursions, class events (such as class speeches) and various school events. It was clear the parent support was for all students not just their own. THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
Children, take care of your parent(s) these holidays because they have looked after you and supported you so far in your short lives .
I sincerely wish all the 4W students and families a sacred and Happy Christmas.
The Yr 5 classrooms you will be attend-ing will be lucky to have such quality young students next year.
Mr Milne
Mrs Debbie Cannell, Mrs Mon-ica Doherty-Bigara and Mrs Le-na Williams of 1W would like to thank all of the parents who have entrusted the care of their children with us this year. Thank you for the support you have given us. We wish you and your families a happy and holy Christmas.
Mr Burke (3B) wishes all families and friends of the Sacred Heart Community a safe and blessed Christmas! To all the children and families of 1B. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. God bless! Miss Giglia

Miss Hodgson, Miss Lane, Mrs Maguire, Mrs Sue (Bianchini) Mrs Joyce, Mrs Valentine and Mrs Lynda Greene
Thanks must go to two special people at Sacred Heart
Mrs O’Neill (who we refer to as Dr O’Neill, ably assisted by
nurse O’Leary) Sometimes the school office resembles a hos-
pital or Doctor’s waiting room and she handles all emergencies
very well. The other one is MR VINCE who gets called on
all day long to do all manner of things and he never seems to
get any older!!! We hope they enjoy their Christmas break
PRINCIPAL’S 2016 ANNUAL COMMUNITY MEETING ADDRESS
As a Catholic school, faith remains at the centre of all we do.
In 2016, Pope Francis announced a special Jubilee Year of Mercy. At Sacred Heart, staff and stu-
dents answered the call by reflecting on how we can be ‘Faces of Mercy’ in our school and wider community. Students had a look at various ‘People of Mercy’ and how they have given of themselves to help those
around them. Focus then turned to various ‘Parables of Mercy’ which demonstrated how we can be more merciful to ourselves and the people around us.
LEARNING
The integration of current pedagogy into the learning and teaching programmes in the school is the guiding focus for our dedicated staff. Our whole school strategy on engaging students positively in the learning process through the
setting of success criteria and learning intentions is making learning visible for the students from Kindergarten to Year Six. This ensures there is a clear ownership of the learning process for both students and teachers. In all learn-
ing areas instruction is data informed with monitoring and assessment processes in place for all students. I especially
acknowledge Mrs Emanuela Fragapane who, in her role as Curriculum Co-ordinator, oversees these processes.
The National Assessment Programme for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) together with the Bishops’ Religious Liter-acy Assessment for Year Three and Year Five students are used for the development of the Curriculum Plan each
year to ensure we are targeting areas of need for all students in these learning areas.
During 2016 the school has continued its focus in the Mathematics Learning Area to ensure students’ knowledge and
pedagogy of how best to use mental math skills effectively, quickly and correctly. The outcome of this has meant an improvement in Maths outcomes and reinforcement that the work being done by teachers is having a positive impact
on the results our students are achieving.
Teachers have also been engaged in setting out the Essential Learnings for each year level to ensure that for our
learning community, certain essential aspects of learning must be achieved each year.
After an analysis of data and consultation with staff the school will focus on Reading and Numeracy in 2017. Over a number of years the staff has been engaged in rich professional development aimed at up skilling knowledge of con-
tent and pedagogy in these areas. We will continue to explore and ensure we provide learning environments that
have the effect of producing maximum gains and improvements to student outcomes. By ensuring that student dif-ferences are accommodated through methodology and curriculum we believe each child will ultimately benefit and
achieve higher results. A strong emphasis will also be placed on gathering data to drive the teaching and learning process. Along with the aim to improve in these two focus areas staff continually reflect on their practice and ac-
countability.
Flexible learning spaces within the classrooms are well utilised and this year there has been an increasing integration
between indoor and outdoor learning spaces resulting in heightened levels of engagement from students which reflect a mix of collaborative, partner and individual learning opportunities. Young children need concrete hands on
materials and resources to construct meaning and understanding and skills alongside the intentional teaching and scaffolding of teachers. In order to do this children have been given time in the early years to investigate and be
active learners each day. Teachers are able to form strong relationships and knowledge of each child to cater for
their strengths, needs and interests through intentional instruction and play as outlined in the Early Years Learning Framework and the National Quality Standards.
The integration of chrome books for Year Five and Year Six students has provided the ability to connect seamlessly with a wider range of resources and is enhancing their development as 21st Century digital citizens.
Through the integration of STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics) programs within our school
such as Little Scientist, the ELLA Program (Early Learning Languages Australia) our specialised science classes and
allowing children to learn through inquiry and discovery activities is ensuring that Sacred Heart is well placed to de-velop citizens of the future.
In 2017 the formation and learning of Digital Literacy for Pre-Primary to Year Six students will provide increased op-
portunity to further build seamless integration of technology into classroom learning. Our resident IT expert Mr Gra-ham Maher will be leading this integration of cognitive and technical skills.
The introduction of the third tier of leadership through the roles of Wellness Co-ordinator, Faith Co-ordinator, Sus-
tainability Co-ordinator and Curriculum Co-ordinator has resulted in greater engagement and understanding of stu-dents in many aspects of school life. I thank Mr Landers, Mr Maher, Mrs Bathols and Mrs Fragapane for building
school strengths and expertise in these areas.
Our 2016 focus on student wellbeing has seen the extension of the Blue Earth Programme from the early years
into the middle and upper years. The Kids Matter Team have completed the review of Component One on our
journey to becoming a registered Kids Matter School. 2017 will see further up skilling of staff around this important area.
ENGAGEMENT Our school logo reflects the unity of family and school where students, parents and staff come together in harmo-
ny for a common purpose. The many community events have given families many opportunities to build connec-tions with each other.
To the many parents who actively contribute on a daily basis a huge thank you. Whether it is helping at home, in the classroom or supporting P&F or School Board endeavours this demonstrates to your children the importance
you place on their learning. The energy and common focus that exists within these service groups to the school ensures that our sense of community will continue to grow and prosper into the future. I thank all P&F Committee
and School Board members for your commitment to Catholic Education and in particular the vision of Sacred Heart.
I acknowledge our Child Care staff both in the Early Learning Centre and Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) for
their enthusiasm, energy and passion in the provision of these ‘one stop’ services to the school community. Both centres continually strive to provide a rich environment for your children and have been recognised by ACECQA
(Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority) the governing body for Child Care as more than ade-quately meeting requirements in regard to care, the environment and safety procedures.
Our Year Six students have, through Year Six Ministries, embraced every opportunity to enhance and build their leadership skills and have contributed enthusiastically to all aspects of school life. I am especially proud of these
wonderful role models for their younger peers as they have consistently demonstrated the significance of being a Sacred Heart student. I wish them well as they take their knowledge of themselves and understanding of the world
to High School.
In 2016, the Wellness role saw the introduction of many new initiatives. Sacred Heart become a Crunch and Sip school with the support of our school canteen. Students and staff have been encouraged to eat more fruit and
vegetables and the program has seen an increase in healthy eating across the school. Staff have completed the Kids Matter in-service, with the aid of an ‘Action Team’ in the development of mental well being at our school using
the Kids Matter framework. We also saw the introduction of ‘Wellness Wednesdays’, where students from Year
Five and Six participated in rotating weekly activities centred around mental health and wellbeing. Lunchtime sporting tournaments continued this year involving students from Year Four to Six, staff, parents and ex-students.
Our school was also involved in the Australian wide anti bullying campaign “Say No to Bullying. Our Year One and Six class projects were used as examples through various media of how classes can stamp out bullying!
The addition of Ms Frances Mercer, our Chaplaincy Worker , onto our school staff has had a positive influence on enhancing ‘mindfulness’ for students, staff and parents. I am pleased l to say that Frances will be with us again
next year.
ACCOUNTABILITY ‘Every experience is an opportunity to grow’ was the theme for our inaugural LEG week (Learn, Experience, Grow)
held in Term Three. A range of activities was provided for students that were engaging, imaginative, productive, would lead to a better understandings of different cultures, build resiliency and respect and acknowledge the im-
portant part which our Aboriginal heritage has played in the building of our nation. YES, it was different to tradi-
tional teaching, YES it was exhausting for teachers, and YES our students learnt, experienced and grew in their understanding of the world, practised how to work productively with others, developed positive attitudes including
problem solving, accepted differing opinions, built self-respect and made positive connections with adults and peers. In the words of one of our students, “It was the best thing ever!”
2016 saw a continuation of Sustainability projects across the school. Students continued to compost and recycle and many students bring a Waste Free Lunch every day, not just on Wednesday. In July, students from Years
Three to Six participated in native seedling planting along the Canning River to help rehabilitate the environment in
our community. During LEG Week, the whole school took part in activities aimed at waste reduction and packing waste-free lunches. The school has also picked up other sustainable practices such as composting, recycling E-
Waste and continuing battery recycling and we look forward to some planned new systems being implemented in 2017.
We are privileged, as a school staff, to be working in such a well-resourced and established school. 2016 has seen
further expansion of technology within the school and the embedding of 21st century facilities. I acknowledge and thank the School Board for their sound financial management and understanding of the need to provide the best
possible learning environment for your children. On your behalf I particularly thank retiring member, Mr Troy Sea-man (Chairman) for his service of six years.
The contribution of staff and their willingness to give of their own time to the school is evident on a daily basis. 2016 has seen many opportunities where staff have readily taken on extra duties, projects and responsibilities for
the benefit of your children and the school community and I thank them personally and on your behalf. I wish those leaving God’s blessing in their future endeavours. I especially acknowledge our Assistant Principal, Mrs Vanessa
Alaniz, whose passion for learning and attention to detail ensures that we are well placed to lead Sacred Heart into the future and our Extended Leadership Team, Mrs Emanuela Fragapane, Mrs Donna Bathols, Mr Graham Maher
and Mr Shane Landers for their drive and energy in broadening the curriculum for your children.
Reflection at whole staff levels is undertaken through processes including coaching, AITSL goal setting, Quality Im-provement Plan Development for the National Quality Standards and individual, team and whole school meetings.
This year our Extended Leadership Team led the review components in the QCS of Pastoral Care of Students (Wellness), Wider Community Partnerships (Sustainability), Differentiated teaching and Learning (Curriculum and Integrating Catholic Faith, Life and Culture (Faith). The action focus from these reviews forms part of the Annual
School Improvement Plan for the 2017 year.
DISCIPLESHIP
We are blessed with a strong connection to the parish and work closely with catechists in the delivery of parish based, school supported and family focused sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation, all of
which took place in Term Three. I thank Monsignor Tim and Father Tom for their strong presence within the school and in the lives of the students.
Reaching out to those in our community teaches students about the Social Justice issues that exist in today’s world
and giving to those who are less fortunate is part of the Corporal Acts of Mercy to which Pope Francis called us. In 2016 each term provided opportunity for students to reach out to others:
In Term One, we had our annual Walkathon, organised by Mr Andrew Milne, where students raised money
for Caritas In Term Two, money raised from our Sacred Heart Day celebrations were sent to Caritas, Catholic Missions,
LifeLink and the Loreto sisters for their work in East Timor In Term Three, students from Year 6 made special gift bags for those in need. These were brought up as
special offerings at the beginning of our Confirmation Mass.
Finally, in Term Four we raised money for Catholic Missions through ‘Sock it to Poverty’ to help children from
around the world who are not as well off as ourselves.
Bringing the school vision to life for the school community has been a major focus this year and I thank Mr Graham Maher in his role as Faith Co-ordinator for developing procedures to help make reverence and respect paramount.
It has been wonderful to see the celebration of the Living Like Jesus Awards and the pride on the students faces when they are recognised and celebrated for making reverence, respect, responsibility and resilience evident
in their actions and dealing with others as our school vision to come alive!
I conclude this school year with mixed emotions as I move to serve Catholic Education in a different capacity during
2017. I hold with me the knowledge that Sacred Heart is a vibrant centre of faith and learning where the communi-
ty of students, staff and parents strive to work in harmony and common purpose. We are a school which values and respects the rights of each individual to bring the best they can to every situation and opportunity be it small or
large and I look forward with anticipation to being part of this community again in 2018.

TO THE GRADUATION
COMMITTEE
A HUGE thank you to the parents
who helped our Yr 6 students to “CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES” at their Graduation Dinner.
Months of preparation had gone into their Graduation Dinner and graduation gifts with the culmi-
nation last Monday evening in the Brennan Hall. How colourful, yet elegant did the room look.
The students enjoyed a wonderful dinner and were able to showcase their dancing skills. The joy
on their faces was a great thing to see!!!
There were a lot of people involved in the organising and at the risk of not remembering them all,
please let it be known that you all did a fantastic job and we are appreciative of the time and the
effort it took. Thank you so much from all of us at Sacred Heart.
