Mayday, Mayday, Mayday!
The term mayday was coined in the earlier part of the twentieth century as a call for help because of distress. To avoid any confusion, the word is said three times. It was primarily used for mariners and aviators, but it has also come into use among firefighters, police officers, and other governmental service organizations. While many of
us have probably never witnessed a major distress where the term mayday was used, most have probably seen it used in a Hollywood movie at some time.
As Christians, we also cry out in distress. Our cry is not the same as what the world uses, but we do cry out. Lord, have mercy! We use it in our services nearly every Sunday. When we sing the Kyrie (Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy) we recognize our distress and need for a Savior. We also recognize that everything comes from the Lord, and so we cry out to Him understanding our need for help in all things on this earth. And not just any help, but the help that only He can provide.
When things in life don’t go as planned and you find yourself in distress, rather than shouting
out a word or phrase that would be considered unchristian or cursing, try using the Christian
distress call. Lord, have mercy! “The Lord is near to all who call on him.” (Psalm 145:18) By
doing so, you are acknowledging that He is in control of all things and you are relinquishing
your perceived control. In this, we not only find help here on earth, but we also find salvation.
“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
In the service of Christ, Pastor Rolf

Wednesday Evening Bible Study
Come join our Adult Bible Study led by Pastor Rolf. Join us in the
Fellowship Hall every Wednesday evening from 6:30 until approximately
7:45.
New Bible Journaling Group
Everyone is invited. If you like to doodle, draw pictures, color with
coloring pencils, or just underline; then please join us for fellowship and
doodling in our bibles. Journaling is a great interactive Bible Study
method. It helps you to interact with God’s word by recording your
thoughts on what you’re reading. Going back through your journal can
help you reflect on what God has shown you in His Word. And you have
an heirloom that will be special to your family. This is lot of fun
interacting with others and learning more about God’s Word. For
information contact Deb Baldwin or Carol Malone at 816-365-7397 or the
church office at 816-353-3813. We will meet on Wednesdays at 3:30 pm.

LWML (Lutheran Women Mission League) The topic for May 2016 Circle Meetings is found in the Spring Quarterly on page 20 and is entitled “Our Changeless God – In the Changes of our Lives”. Authored by Jean McLain who serves as Deaconess at Grace Lutheran Church in Auburn, Michigan. Previous to her studies at Fort Wayne Theological Seminary and graduation in 2011, she served the church for 36 years as a Lutheran School Teacher. Jean and her husband, Rev. Paul B. McLain were blessed with five
grandchildren. Their sons have followed in their father’s footsteps and are serving in Lutheran Churches – Missouri Synod. How do we, as Christians, cope with transitions or changes in our lives – be they painful or pleasant – sudden or gradual. No matter how expected or anticipated, all bring challenges to our faith. What “might” be the greatest danger we face during times of change? Roll call word is “Trust” Alpha Circle will meet Monday, May 2, 2016 at 7:00 pm at the home of Wanda Thurnau with Carol Head as her co-hostess. Topic will be led by Cindy McCubbin. Acolyte robes will be checked by Carol Head for laundering or mending needs. She also will be checking the possibility of obtaining black acolyte robes to be used at Lent Services. For more information call the president of Alpha Circle, Elaine Nolen at 816-358-1773. Lydia Circle will meet Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 1:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall hosted by Lisa Thornton. Topic Will be led by Kathy Jarvis. Officers elected to serve our newly organized circle are: President Kathy Jarvis Vice-President Joyce Shropshire Secretary Sheila Dalen Treasurer Pam Keller and Lois Gilham For more information, please call the president of Lydia Circle at 816-763-2894.
+++++ +++++ LWML – “Looking to the Future” What will the LWML of the future be like? In her book “Wings” Marlys Taege asks the following – given the technology of the Space Age – will we have societies, zones and district in outer space? As space stations are established, many scenarios are possible. Before long it might be economically feasible for the LWML president to address every district convention and answer audience questions via-two-way television without traveling to the convention site. Something to think about. What dreams do we as members have for the LWML in the future? Some of the dreams expressed by our past LWML presidents like Ida Mall, Florence Montz, Helen Gienapp, Alberta Barns and others – Those dreams were many and varied: That! Each Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod woman would want to associate with this organization and see it as a vital avenue for spiritual daily renewal and active ministry opportunities, That! LWML will become an organization of younger women as well as older, That! Leaguers will think “big” when it comes to “mite goals”, That! The LWML will be seen as God’s instrument for blessings to all our people, That! The LWML would reflect a true mix of various ethnic groups in general membership as well as in leadership positions,
6
That! Our organization will be as alive and vital for our granddaughters as it is for us, That! We might live to see peace in our time. Those are just a few dreams expressed – How about us, each one of us – What is your dream for our LWML here at Peace? Maybe we should be asking ourselves, “Are we meeting the needs of Christian women of our church? Are our meetings dull? Have we passed our prime? Are we truly “Women in Mission?”
+++++ +++++ +++++ Convention – Missouri District LWML Convention June 3-5 in Cape Girardeau.
Keynote Speaker – Past LWML President Linda Reiser
Speaker – Gary Thies, Mission Counselor for Mission Central
Evening Entertainment – Lutheran Talent Show
Ingathering: Lutheran Food Pantry, Perryville Lutheran Family and Children’s service, Cape Girardeau
Eight of our LWML Members will be attending the convention: Darla Wolters Carol Head Linda Hammond Joyce Shropshire Kathleen Jarvis Anita Moon Lois Gillham Cheryl Enke
Our prayers are with our convention traveling sisters. May God keep them safe and may God bless the women of the LWML as they strive to live and work and make Jesus the center of their lives “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might…” (Ecclesiastes 9:10 NIVO) Ruth Oexman, LWML Publicity

Sunday School – What’s going on?
The Sunday school classes are doing a variety of activities this spring. Below are some of Bible lessons we have studied.
The Pre-School to Kindergarten class has celebrated Easter with a focus on Jesus’s life, death and resurrection. In May they are continuing with a variety of New Testament lessons celebrating how God changes our lives.
The 1st-4th grade class is studying “Gross” Bible lessons. They have studied lessons including Abram making sacrifices to God, God sending the plagues, and of course Jesus’s death and resurrection including Thomas feeling the nail holes in Jesus’s hands. May lessons will continue focusing on “Gross” Bible lessons including Jonah, Ezekiel and the Israelites. The focus is on how God knows best and how he helps us no matter what.
The 5th thru High School classes have been studying “The 13 Most Important Bible Lessons for Teenagers” which covers 13 foundational doctrines of Christianity, such as, the role of the Holy Spirit in Christians’ lives; the necessity of prayer; the message of Jesus’ death and resurrection; and the command to tell others about their faith.
We invite all children to join us for our Summer Sunday School.
The younger classes (Pre-school to 4th grade) will join together and focus on the Veggie Tales: Rack, Shack and Benny (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego honor God), Josh and the Big Wall (Joshua and the Israelites follows God word) , and the Ballad of Little Joe (Joseph following God).
The 5th thru High School classes will be studying “Faith on Fire” 15 Lessons to Help Teenagers Change the World. These lessons will reinforce that their relationship with Jesus should not end when they leave the church building; everything they do is an expression of their faith.
We would love to have our classes full with students hearing God’s word.

Sewing Bee
The ladies plan to meet every Monday in May Except the last Monday which is Memorial Day. We meet in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30 am. Bring a sack lunch and stay into the afternoon. We completed 48 quilts so far this year. Please save your Best Choice UPC’s, “Box Tops for Education” and “Labels for Education” from
Campbell’s and other products. Also save your cancelled postage stamps and leave a ¼ inch margin of envelope around the stamp. Containers for all these are on the shelf in the Narthex.
A Word from the Spinner
Spinning, spinning, where do I stop? Most of our life, we’re searching for truth. Then later in life, we’re afraid we’ll forget what we learned! Two new additions to the spinner address each one of our interests/concerns. Maybe you’ll find them helpful to take, read or pass on.
“The Truth About Angels” Today’s media features many stories on angels. The New Age Movement suggests that each of us has a “personal angel” and encourages us to get in contact with it. Do angels really exist?
Can we see them? What is their purpose? Explore the biblical evidence of angels and their purpose inside this pamphlet. You’ll also discover answers to many of the questions raised in the media and by New Age religious movements. Inside you’ll find the special role angels serve in delivering the Gospel message.
Alzheimer’s: “Facing the Loss of a Lifetime” Alzheimer’s disease alters the brain, causing memory loss and personality change. While the clinical effects of the disease are well-known, the impact it has on the person suffering – as well as the family who care for them – is much more complex. Told through the eyes of a family experiencing Alzheimer’s, this booklet explores the effect of the disease on both the patient and the caregiver. Offering insights on the joys that are still possible throughout the disease, this booklet gives hope by reminding us that though we may forget who we are, God never will.

“KEEP US SOBER and on the HORSE!
“The world is like a drunken peasant. If one helps him into the saddle on one side, he will fall off on the other side.” Martin Luther (Luther’s Works, vol. 54, pg. 111). With that eye-catching title and quote, Pastor Matthew C. Harrison wrote the president’s article of the April issue of “The Lutheran Witness”. He then likens the Church to a “drunken peasant”, too. You have to admit; his words do make one want to read on to see what in the world he had to say. But this was just the beginning of relevant reading for the Lutheran who has plunked down $15.96 to subscribe to the official periodical of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The next article starts with the question: “I’m headed to college next year, and I’m worried I won’t have any Lutheran, or even Christian, friends. What’s to keep me from falling away from the faith while I’m at college?” This is followed by “Let Your Pastor Pastor You!” in response to this question: “When it comes to difficult circumstances in life, my pastor isn’t the first person I think of to go to for prayer and pastoral care. How can I let my pastor pastor me?” Next Question: “Are the men and women killed by ISIS and similar groups modern-day martyrs? And what do I even start to pray for when it comes to the Christians who are persecuted by these groups?” That article is followed by “Isn’t That Catholic?” By Ryan Fehrmann. He gives answer to “Making the sign of the cross and Communion every Sunday. He also gives a refresher on the meaning of “catholic” and “Catholic”. Next follows an article with questions about prayer, faith, and depression. Q: “My family has been praying that God would heal my sick grandmother, but it’s been years and she’s still not getting better. Are we not praying enough?” Q: “I’ve been baptized, but my life hasn’t improved. Is it because I don’t attend church as often as I should?” Q: “I was told that I wouldn’t be so depressed if my faith were stronger. Is this true?” Answers–Sorry, you’ll have to read the article for the answers. Wow! The article on “Elections – And Our Christian Faith” answers a big question: “When it comes to voting in this fall’s elections, how should I as a Christian view the faith (or lack thereof) of the candidates? Do I vote based purely on that?” A few other questions with articles:
What about an Unsaved Child who dies?
I know what the Bible says, but I believe differently – is this really so bad?
Sometimes it seems all we as church members do is squabble and gossip. Shouldn’t we get along better?
Don’t you know that if we don’t do ‘X’ then the Church will die? (the sin of pessimism)
Are all sins EQUAL? I know sin is wrong, but I hardly think my little white lie is as bad as my co-worker’s affair…
Check with the Church office on how to order your yearly subscription. It’s worth it!

Family Fun Fest – things to do!
Do you enjoy that feeling gotten when the parking lot at Peace is full…. When church is
full? On Saturday, May 14th we are expecting the parking lot to be overflowing; the
property, if viewed from altitude, to be dotted with movement of people. The Family
Fun Fest will take place that day from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Many of our members
(perhaps you) have already been working to make this event inviting, fun, memorable,
and a point of entry for our neighbors to Peace. It is going to take all of us working together to meet these
desired outcomes. Please do one or more of the following:
Check out the large purple poster at the Welcome Center as you enter church from the parking lot and
sign up as a volunteer May 14th.
Add this event to your prayer list…. and pray for those attending.
If you have a pop-up we can use… sign the yellow sheet at the Welcome Center.
Invite your friends and neighbors (postcards are going to 5,000 of our neighbors).
Get a poster from Lois Gilham and post it our neighborhood.
Make it known to Gary T or Jim C that you are available on Friday, May 13th to assist with staging the
property.
Have questions? Contact Jan Rinne at 816-743-0755 or [email protected]
Thank you to each of you who have been working to make the Family Fun Fest a great event to date….
Working on the site plan, working on activities (gathering supplies – designing – bagging soil – etc), making
signage, cutting ribbon for balloons, procuring needed supplies, delivering posters, designing posters and
postcard, getting postcards mailed, making decorations, arranging for special displays and activities not hosted
by Peace, making donations to cover expenses/paying directly for needs, sharing the date with others,
preparing the grounds, having on your prayer list, and so much more. It is wonderful to see so many working
on the same goal/event. The family of Peace working together to the glory of Christ!
The LUMA Auxillary will be meeting at Timothy on May 18th at 9:30 AM. The program will feature Laura Hildreth presenting “Funniest Lutheran Women”. The ingathering will be food items for the Food Pantries. Those planning to attend should let Punky McDaniel know so she can make reservations.

Book Club
Still aching over his wife's death, Cody Gunner can't bear the thought of also letting go of his brother, Carl Joseph, who suffers from Down Syndrome. Cody wants his brother home, where he will be safe and cared for, not out on his own in a world that Cody knows all too well can be heartless and insecure. So when Carl Joseph's teacher, Elle, begins championing his independence, she finds herself at odds with Cody. But even as these two battle it out, they can't deny the instinctive connection they share, and Cody faces a crisis of the heart. What if Elle is the one woman who can teach Cody that love is still possible? If Cody can let go of his lingering anger, he might just see that sometimes the brightest hope of all lies JUST BEYOND THE CLOUDS
