Hearing vs. Listening

“Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” These words spoken by St. Jerome in the 5th century are true today as they were then. When I finished my time in the Air Force, I was on a quest to find out what I was supposed to do with my life. My journey led me through a couple of dead ends. I remember sitting in my room on a Wednesday evening. I opened the Bible that friends had given to me years earlier, yet I had never opened. That night, I took the chance of exploring this book with new eyes. As I scanned the words of the Book of Genesis, it was as if an invisible presence was speaking to me personally. God was revealing himself to me through these words. I was not sure what was happening, but I went with it. I did not under-stand everything that I was reading, but it did not matter. The 2020 ‘Diocesan Ministries Appeal’ (formerly called the ‘Bishop’s Annual Appeal’)

Officially kicking-off this weekend, the theme of this year’s Appeal is “Love Thy Neighbor.” It is a vivid reminder, especially as we all face the COVID pandemic together, that what we do for our neigh-bors in need, we do for Christ himself. Please support this important cause that helps so many of our brothers and sisters in our Diocese. The Diocesan Ministries Appeal supports the work of our Catholic Charities, priests’ extraordinary healthcare needs as well as Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ retirement residence, urban elementary schools and seminarian education. These are all important ministries that touch many lives, and your participation makes this assistance possible. You can give with confidence, knowing that funds from the Diocesan Ministries Appeal are used solely for the causes described in the campaign materials. They are used for no other purpose. For your convenience, you can support the Diocesan Ministries Appeal by making an on-line gift. Simply go to www.2020appeal.org and follow the user-friendly instructions.

Reflection ... by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

When I was “one and twenty,” a very long time ago, I was a seminarian naive to many ways of the world. On vacation at home one morning, my beloved Dad asked me questions about the very parable we hear this weekend. For background purposes, let me tell you that my Dad was a strong union man, and thought that was the work-ers’ only protection against unfair management practices. So how do I reconcile the Lord Jesus telling a story about what looks like a contradiction of justice? I cannot remember my answer to Dad at the time. I’m sure I struggled to defend Jesus’ decision. Admittedly, no seminary Scripture class in my time ever covered every verse in Scripture, much less this selection. It was only years later that I learned what Jesus was all about in telling this parable. It was to teach us about the remarka-ble generosity of God. It was the very same lesson that Isaiah had taught centuries before. God’s ways are not ours. So it is futile to “frame” the picture painted by the parable with our modern labor laws, rights and practices. We then would miss the Lord’s point. In our time, overshadowed as it is by an enemy named Covid 19, we have been made aware of many people’s generosity. They keep our cynicism in check. Health care workers, emergency responders; the transit workers; grocery store employees; and all the good police person-nel bravely keep us safe. But none of that goodness can match the generosity that our good and loving God offers us. His grace is the ultimate motivation of all those good people, and many others. There is a much older “virus” plaguing our lives called “sin.” Yet He tells us still that one act of genuine sorrow and repentance turns back His just cause for eternal pun-ishment, and realigns our spirit with His. Such is His boundless generosity! We are far from it. Sadly many of us have a twisted attitude toward giving, especially forgiving. Once upon a time, a little girl was given two dollars by her father. He told her that she could do anything she wanted with one and that the other was to be given to God on Sunday at church. The girl nodded in agreement and asked if she could go to the candy store. With visions of all that she could buy with her dollar, she happily skipped toward the store, holding tightly to the two dol-lars in her hand. As she was skipping along, she tripped and fell and the wind blew one of the dollars into a storm drain at the curb. Picking herself up, the little girl looked at the dollar still in her hand and then at the storm drain and said, “Well. Lord, there goes your dollar.”

Sunday, Sep 20, 2020TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEGrow your faithWho gave you your first God lessons? On this CatecheticalSunday, we thank family members, preachers, teachers, RCIAteams, and others who brought the Good News to us. We’re alsograteful for holy ones, like Venerable Mother Theresa Dudzik, who taught by their example. A remarkable seamstress, Dudzikarrived in Chicago at age 21 after the Great Fire of 1871. Shetook the destitute into her apartment and sewed to earn money tofeed them. In time she founded the Franciscan Sisters of Chicagoto run homes, schools, day-care centers, and an orphanage. Whatwill your own example teach others?

TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 55:6-9; Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a; Matthew20:1-16a (133). “Seek the LORD while he may be found, call himwhile he is near.”

Monday, Sep 21, 2020FEAST OF MATTHEW, APOSTLE AND EVANGELISTRise upNobody likes paying taxes or has warm, fuzzy feelings about theIRS, but it seems tax collectors in Jesus’ time had it especiallyrough—being lumped in with all manner of sinners. That isbecause tax collectors were Jews who worked for the Romans, the enemy occupiers of Jewish lands, so they were viewed astraitors by their people. Jesus sought them out for salvationanyway and led Matthew to a new position: apostle andevangelist. What does it take to get a promotion like that? Merely“get up and follow Jesus,” as Matthew did.

TODAY'S READINGS: Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13; Matthew 9:9-13 (643). “Idid not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

Tuesday, Sep 22, 2020Trade stressed for blessedBack-to-school September is such a stressful time for families.Add the reality of COVID-19—with parents trying to work fromhome, kids’ schedules often up in the air—and it gets all themessier. Even if you don’t have children at home, you probablyknow people who do and are stressing. How can we all findbalance? Honor the sabbath in whatever way you are able, byhitting the pause button—even for a few hours. “Human life has arhythm of work and rest,” says the Catechism of the CatholicChurch. “The institution of the Lord’s Day helps everyone enjoyadequate rest and leisure to cultivate their familial, cultural, social, and religious lives.” Plan ahead for this coming Sunday.

TODAY'S READINGS: Proverbs 21:1-6, 10-13; Luke 8:19-21 (450). “Todo what is right and just is more acceptable to the LORD.”

Wednesday, Sep 23, 2020MEMORIAL OF PIUS OF PIETRELCINA, PRIESTListen from the heartSaint Pius of Pietrelcina (1887-1968) is better known by hisnickname, Padre Pio. He is said to have borne the stigmata, thewounds of our Lord, for more than 50 years. To be sure, he wasa man of prayer and suffering, a Capuchin Franciscan priest wholived in a small Italian friary nearly all of his life. However, theprincipal reason for his local fame was his ability to listen to thosewho came seeking his counsel, to “read their hearts” and to offerthem the love of God in the sacraments. His frequent message to

penitents, “Pray, hope, and don’t worry,” is a message for us totreasure and savor today.

TODAY'S READINGS: Proverbs 30:5-9; Luke 9:1-6 (451). “He sentthem to proclaim the kingdom of God.”

Thursday, Sep 24, 2020Find the balance between law and freedomToday’s gospel notes King Herod’s interest in Jesus, whomHerod likely saw as a threat. The tension between political powerand the moral and religious power of Christianity has been part ofthe faith since its beginning. In Dignitatis Humane, the Vatican IIdocument on religious liberty, the Council “urges everyone, especially those who are charged with the task of educatingothers, to do their utmost to form people who, on the one hand, will respect the moral order and be obedient to lawful authority, and on the other hand, will be lovers of true freedom.” Soundslike a recipe for peace and progress.

TODAY'S READINGS: Ecclesiastes 1:2-11; Luke 9:7-9 (452). “ButHerod said, ‘John I beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hearsuch things?’ ”

Friday, Sep 25, 2020Keep the faith! The coronavirus has taken quite a toll on Catholic parish andsacramental life. Nearly every bishop responding to a recentsurvey said the pandemic has seriously affected the celebration ofthe sacraments and rites and sacramental preparation programs intheir dioceses. In addition, they report that the morale of priests, lay ecclesial ministers, deacons, and chancery staff has beendamaged by the long shutdown, according to a survey out ofGeorgetown University. People are hurting at all levels of churchlife because the very thing we thrive on—gathering together—hasbecome problematic and potentially life-threatening. Be patientand work with your local faith community to find safe andcreative pastoral responses. And keep faith alive in your ownhome and heart!

TODAY'S READINGS: Ecclesiastes 3:1-11; Luke 9:18-22 (453). “Thereis . . . a time for everything under the heavens . . . a time toembrace, and a time to be far from embraces.”

Saturday, Sep 26, 2020MEMORIAL OF COSMAS AND DAMIAN, MARTYRSSaints for this seasonToday’s brother physicians are patron saints to a long list ofhealthcare workers, and also against plagues. A brief year ago, biblical references to plagues and epidemics seemed quaint andfar removed. Our eyes have been opened to the enduring force ofsuch outbreaks, however, and Cosmas and Damian truly becomesaints for our time. Perhaps even more so when we learn theywere Arab physicians from the area now called Syria. Healingrole models come from all backgrounds. Thank the frontlinehealthcare workers in your own town. They are likely fromdiverse backgrounds as well.

TODAY'S READINGS: Ecclesiastes 11:9-12:8; Luke 9:43b-45 (454).“Fill us at daybreak with your kindness.”
