B-Line Blues Sketch Book created in 1941’s by Patty Branin, Former Flight Hostess for Braniff

This article was written by your Buzz Notes editor, Kathy Logan Smith. There is definitely a long story behind this; however, the short story is: a friend of mine, Susan Greenleaf, whose mother passed away recently, gave me this sweet sketch book after Susan discovered it while cleaning out her mother’s house in New Braunfels, Texas. Susan’s mother was Anne Jones Green, who was a flight hostess from 1941 to 1943. The sketch book was given to Anne by her friend, Pat (Patty) Branin (Douglas), who was in the same flight training class in 1941, along with someone with the last name of MacRae, a/k/a “Mac”! Congratulations, if you followed all that! Anyway, as you can imagine, the three of them were very close and remained close for many, many years. Patty dedicated this book to her two friends and classmates. The last sketch is my favorite!

Oh, my! The dreaded haircut! And, oh, the dreaded passenger! Uh, sir! Your tray table, please?

From burping the little babies . . . To burping the big babies . . .

This is Anne Jones playing poker with passenger, USAF pilot E.L. Green, and another passenger on her flight from Chicago to Dallas (with many stops in between). They must have hit it off, as E.L. asked her out and she accepted. The date developed into a romance that lasted 63 years. They married in May of 1943.

Remember TGI Fridays? The Business Insider Needs Your Input

We’ve been contacted by Dan Richards with Business Insider, an online business news website. Dan is working on a human Interest story about the history of TGI Fridays, from its first restaurant in New York City to the national chain it has become today. This will be a 20-minute radio podcast, a new series that is sort of like a mini documentary. He has heard that TGIF was a popular place for flight attendants to frequent, both in New York and later when the second restaurant opened in Dallas. Yes, some of us did slip into TGI Fridays on New York layovers! TGIF opened in New York in the late 1960s at a time when attitudes in dating culture were changing and opened the door for the new concept of singles bars. Now, Friday’s has transformed from a hip singles bar/restaurant to become more family oriented today. Dan is looking for ideas of what was new and exciting about TGIF in its early years. In particular, Dan is looking to interview people who worked as flight attendants on first-hand experiences who might have had a memorable experience at TGIF during the late 60s or early 70s, in either New York or Dallas. If you have a memorable experience about TGIF to share with Dan, please email him at [email protected], or call him at (617) 480-9518.

New Life for Landmark Braniff Buildings Aviation Base Lands at Old Headquarters

An aviation ground services company, The Arnold Cos. Air, says it will put a new commercial flight center in part of Braniff International Airways’ old headquarters at Dallas Love Field. TAC Air said it plans to have the facility open by next summer with 200,000 square feet of hangar space and aviation support facilities.

The new aviation base will be accompanied by retail, restaurant, offices and an auto dealership in a $134 million, mixed-use redevelopment of the 60 year old Braniff headquarters at 7701 Lemmon Avenue on the east side of Love Field. Dallas businessman and car dealer, Randall Reed, has been working for six years to restore and reuse Braniff’s landmark office and maintenance center buildings. The project, called the Braniff Centre, will include Reed’s Park Cities Lincoln dealership when it is finished. The original Braniff building was designed by architects William Pereira and Charles Luckman and has been prized by preservationists. Reed stepped forward with a plan to save the building after discussions about demolishing the structures. TAC Air says it plans to offer private hangars, an executive terminal and concierge and valet services out of its facility. “When open, you will take a step back to the mid-century era of aviation in Dallas, with Braniff archives on display in the public areas,” said Greg Arnold, chairman and CEO of Dallas-based Arnold Cos. “For those with aircraft, you can experience the best ground support and hangar facilities in the DFW Metroplex as you travel to Dallas through Love Field or make TAC Air your home base.”
