The Ascension of the Lord Thursday, May 10

The Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter has traditionally been celebrated as the Feast of the Ascension. This holy day of obligation reminds us that after the human and divine natures of Christ were united in the Incarnation, they could never be separated. In other words, after the saving death and Resurrection, Jesus ascended, body and soul, into heaven.

Saint Dominic Savio

May 6th is the Memorial of Saint Dominic Savio, but this year due to it falling on a Sunday it will not be celebrated. Dominic was born in 1842 at Riva di Chieri in northern Italy. He was a student of St. Don Bosco. At the time of his first Holy Communion he decided to always lead a life of sanctity by praying and performing works of charity. At the age of 12 he organized a group of boys into the Company of the Immaculate Conception. Besides its religious purpose, the boys swept and took care of the school and looked after the boys that no one seemed to pay any attention to. He died on March 9, 1857 at the age of 14 during a cholera epidemic, after giving assistance to the sick. He was canonized on June 12, 1954 by Pope Pius XII. St. Dominic Savio is patron of children’s choirs, altar servers, and pregnant women.

Anointing of the Sick

In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin – and sometimes even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising.

The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient.

When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age. Source: www.usccb.org

If you or a loved one is at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta and would like to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick please contact the Chaplain’s Office. If you are a patient at Inland Hospital in Waterville or one of our area residential facilities please contact the Parish Office. In all other cases please contact the Parish Office.

Hail, Holy Queen

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy; Hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope.

To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us;

and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

Resisting Happiness by Matthew Kelly

Nothing on earth can satisfy our desire for happiness. We must place God at the center of everything so that we can make sense of life.

The next time you have a decision to make, put aside what you want, and choose what you think God wants. This is not easy, but the more you do it, the easier it becomes.

Ministers of Communion for the Homebound Needed

Because the sick are prevented from celebrating the Eucharist with the rest of the community, the most important visits are those during which they receive Holy Communion. In receiving the Holy Eucharist they may realize that they are united not only with the Lord’s sacrifice but also with the community itself and are supported by the love of their brothers and sisters.

Here in Corpus Christi Parish we are called to respond to the needs of two hospitals, several skilled nursing facilities and many homebound parishioners. Through this ministry of care, the sick and aged are reminded that they too are part of the Body of Christ.

Do you feel called to this important ministry? If so contact Fr. Matt, 872-2281.
