CHASE Works-In-Progress: Developing a Prognostic Tool for Musculoskeletal Pain Conditions Date/Time: Monday, May 18th, 3:30-4:30PM Location: UW Health Science Building, H371 The objective of this works-in-progress session is to solicit feedback to refine my potential specific aims and determine next steps for developing a grant application focused on prognostic tools for musculoskeletal pain conditions. Recent research programs in the UK have developed and validated brief prognostic tools, which tie into stratified care pathways, for low back pain in primary care. This approach has produced improved clinical outcomes and lower costs for managing low back pain in primary care in the UK. However, little work has systematically examined prognostic tools in other common musculoskeletal conditions or other population with back pain. We are in the early stages of formulating our study question and specific aims for a small grant application that can complement this previous work on prognostic tools/stratified care and support future research programs. We are currently working to: finalize the target study population, determine realistic aims for early phase research, and select an appropriate type of grant application and funding agency.

HIPRC IN THE PRESS IN THIS ISSUE

Dr. Brian Johnston on Pediatric Window Falls in the Seattle Times The Seattle Times has written an article on pediatric window falls, quoting HIPRC Associate Member and Chief of Pediatrics at HMC, Brian Johnston, MD, MPH (Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Adjunct Associate Professor of Health Services). Statistics show pediatric window falls are a national problem, typically in the warmer spring and summer months. Nearly 5,200 children are treated in U.S. emergency rooms after falling out of windows each year, according to a 2011 study in the journal Pediatrics. The Seattle Times article has been cited in similar articles in the Times Union, Voice of the Valley, and the Kentucky Lexington Herald-Leader.

Dr. Ebel, along with Julie Alonso (Director of Safe Kids Washington, Child Injury Prevention Specialist with WA DOH) and Becca Cunningham (mother of window fall survivor Thomas Cunningham), spoke about child injury rates and how families can help prevent

window falls. Representatives from fire departments and other early responders, Central Region EMS Trauma Council, Seattle Children’s Hospital and Safe Kids Seattle were also in attendance.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Pledge to Pool Safely The Pool Safely Pledge campaign has started for the 2015 summer swim season, the day before the Memorial Day weekend and ahead of the start of the summer swim season. This year they held a press conference with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Elliot Kaye, our longtime Congressional champion Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and Laura Metro, the founder of their newest Campaign Safety Partner organization, CPR Party (formerly the CLAY Foundation). Please see below for today’s press release that includes what they discussed at the kickoff event. They announced the latest child drowning data and stressed the importance of their water safety call to action: the Pool Safely Pledge. They have generated more than 11,000 Pledge signers to date. Please help the campaign double that number this summer – and raise more awareness for drowning prevention – by continuing to encourage your communities and stakeholders to Pledge to Pool Safely again this year. In addition, CPSC announced that it has begun a 90-day solicitation for grant applications for a special Pool Safely Grant Program (PSGP) for both state and local governments. CPSC expects to award $1 million in 1-year grants in Fiscal Year 2016 (which begins October 1, 2015) to reduce deaths and injuries from drowning and drain entrapments in pools and spas. The grant program is part of CPSC’s national effort to make drowning and drain entrapment prevention a critical public safety priority. Find out more about the grant and see if you are eligible to apply here: http://www.poolsafely.gov/news/cpsc-encourages-state-and-local-governments-to-apply-for-pool-safely-grants-to-combat-drownings-and-drain-entrapments-2/ There is also additional information available here: http://www.grants.gov/web/grants/search-grants.html?keywords=CPSC
