JENNIFER VINCENT

Jennifer Vincent had an idea. She wanted to have her own business but the idea of work-ing from home isn’t for every-one. With that in mind Jennifer and her husband Nicholas have opened Cowork Penticton. Cowork Penticton gives peo-ple an ad-hoc professional work environment and com-munity hub for workers need-ing short-term desk space, meeting rooms and onsite

business tools such as printers, photocopiers, and projectors. Usage of the space ranges from a daily drop in to a fi xed monthly resident. The coworking model exists in other cities, but Cowork Penticton is the fi rst of its kind in the South Okanagan. The core value of the business is to facilitate a vibrant and col-laborative work community for individual professionals. It is a place for work-at-home people to host meetings, or simply to enjoy the productive quality of a change of scen-ery. Cowork Penticton allows someone to plug in and start working. Internet access is fast and stable, coffee and tea are

included and the space has been designed with various types of work styles in mind. It's more than a desk in an open-plan room, it's a com-munity. There are two rooms available for independent rent-al for meetings, presentations or workshops. The Vincents moved to the Okanagan from Sydney, Australia in 2009. Aside from launching Cowork Penticton, Jennifer also am co-founder of the Farm Bag Fundraiser and am the Oka-nagan Events Coordinator for FarmFolk CityFolk. She is on the boards of the Penticton Urban Agriculture Association and the Downtown Penticton Association.

The South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS) has been pro-viding short-term emer-gency shelter and support to women who have expe-rienced abuse or violence from throughout the South Okanagan, and their chil-dren, for over thirty years. Our programs help wom-en heal by recognizing, understanding and over-coming the impacts of

abuse. Counselling chil-dren who have witnessed abuse helps children learn different ways to express anger, and hopefully will result in children who grow up to enjoy healthy relationships. Support-ive workers address the widespread impacts of abuse, provide practical tools and lead women to a place where they can be-gin their journey towards wellness and healing.

Thirty awesome women are employed by SOWINS, and we are very proud of the level of their commit-ment and the skills that they use to provide these much-needed services to the women and children of the South Okanagan.abuse. Counselling chil-

BRENDA BLATZ

In recent years my yearn-ing for being more out in the public has taken me to a few different jobs. You may have seen me at The Late Rodan Jew-elers, or the fashionable Ricki's Clothes store and now the very cool and cozy Bean to the Beach.

I'm loving the customers and all our interaction and baking to my hearts content, it hardly feels like working until I have to clean up to close.I have also started hav-ing Portrait Parties in my home studio. For as little as $35.00 to $50.00 you and your friends can have your portraits taken and take home a 5x7 of your favorite pose. And any type of portrait you would like. There's lots of laughs and it's a great

get together for a girls night out or a child's birthday party idea.I'm still promoting Visa-lus and have kept my weight off now for over 8 months and still love the shakes with all the new recipes out there I could have a different one ev-ery day. Well I got a new picture this year thanks to Harpreet who took my photo and of course I did do a little bit of Pho-toshop Botox on myself as well.

So many victories behind us, so many challenges to comeThere is no denying the progress Canadian women have made in fi lling positions of power over the decades, whether in business or politics. During National Business Women’sWeek, from October 16 to 22, let’s not lose sight of the fact that these hardwon advances remain fragile. Let’s not forget that there is still plenty of resistance to fair female representation in certain spheres of activity. Before 1918, women in Canada didn’t even have the right to vote in federal elections!Since then, they have not ceased to take huge strides in their quest for equality in education, in personal and legal relationships, and in business. But many more challenges remain. In parliamentary representation, the numbers are low: women made up 25 percent of the windfall in the 2011 federal elections, but it that is

still far from the critical mass target of 30 percent. This dismal rate puts Canada far down the list of women’s representation in world parliamentary institutions around the world.Another place where the glass ceiling continues to prevent Canadian women from achieving their fair share of power is in boardrooms: women are notably underrepresented on private sector and public boards of directors. In Canada, almost half of the boards of directors of large companies include only one woman, and only six percent include two or more. Will the increasing numbers of women registering at our universities change this situation over the next few years?Let’s hope it will, but in the meantime, we must continue to support those who already hold decision-making jobs or who have set their sights on them.

In Canada, almost half of the boards of directors of large companies includeonly one woman, and only six percent include two or more.

The past year has been in-credible for the women of Penticton Laser and Skin Clinic. In September we changed our name to what has al-ways been our legal name and this brought with it the need for develop-ment of our new website, new e-mail address, a new logo, and all new signage. It was a momentous task, but we are proud of the outcome. The website is 98% done, and we are in the process of preparing our before- and- after im-ages showcasing our work over the last 6-plus years. We are in production of our video to demonstrate all our services, intended to give you a glimpse of what happens behind the doors. In 2011 Breanne joined our team, and we are so thrilled with the tal-

ent and skill she lends with her friendly and positive attitude. René had the op-portunity to visit Germany last year where our new skin care line dermavidu-als® is manufactured. It was a privilege to see the intricate details that go into the manufacture of a single bottle of cream or cleanser, and of course the education while there was top shelf material too. Amie has had a year of focus on further devel-opment and education in the area of Botox © and fi llers. She is a remarkably talented operator and the compliments from our regular clients are always abundant. Our tightly knit team has attended many events this last year including the Working Woman’s Open, hosted by Sun FM for the benefi t of the Children’s

Charity. We’ve hosted 2 ladies nights at the Buffl e-head, attended the annual Welcome Wagon Bridal Show, and for the fi rst time this year the Lakeside Re-sort bridal show, to name a few. We always enjoy time spent at events like these and regularly do-nate gift packs to different organizations for their own fundraising efforts. We are privileged to work with the wonderful Dr. Louw, and thank him for the support he gives us, his team, and our commu-nity by allowing us to sup-port them in any way we see fi t and possible.2012 has already started with plenty of activity and we look forward to seeing you all at local events, and, of course, in the clinic. To fi nd out more about our products and services visit www.laserandskin.ca or call 250-490-8590.
