“Huise is jare terug aan hierdie werkers belo-we. Hulle moet behoorlike huise kry en nie netvan ’n ou koshuis na ’n nuwe koshuis verplaasword nie, want dit is die hokkies wat die Stadtans beplan,” het hy gesê.
Volgens hom sal die 1 000 klein eenhede watdie Stad op die terrein wil indruk, kort voorlank in ’n krotbuurt ontaard as gevolg vandie hoë digtheid.
Die proses om openbare deel-name oor die Everite-kos-huisontwikkeling het verle-de Woensdagaand by dieNorthpine-stadsaal ’n aan-vang geneem, met sowat 300 be-kommerde inwoners teenwoor-dig.
Dié ontwikkeling, wat aangepakword deur die Stad Kaapstad en dieGroup 5-konglomeraat, sal bestaan uit1 000 wooneenhede wat insluit semi-ge-subsidieerde behuising (GAP), ten volle ge-subsidieerde behuising (HOP) en dubbelver-dieping-stadsbehuising. Die ontwikkeling saltot ongeveer 4 000 mense huisves.
Die grond, wat gedeeltelik aan die Stad en ge-deeltelik aan Group 5 behoort, is geleë tussendie Checkers-verspreidingsentrum, Protea Vil-lage, die Bracken-natuurpark en Northpine, ensluit die ou Everite-koshuis in.
Volgens Charles Rudman, ’n stadsbeplannerwat die vergadering toegespreek het, het dieontwikkeling twee doelwitte: Eerstens om dieou koshuise te transformeer, om sodoende le-wensomstandighede te verbeter en meer inklu-sief te wees, en tweedens om verligting te bringaan die kritieke behuisingstekort in die stad.
Die Everite-sementfabriek is in die jare vyf-tig in Brackenfell gevestig waar hulle asbespro-dukte vervaardig het.
Everite het egter in 2002 opgehou om asbesin hul produkte te gebruik, danksy streng wet-gewing in dié verband.

“Die hoogste standaarde sal gehandhaafword,” het hy gesê maar bygevoeg dat die mi-nimum grootte van 40 m² deur die regeringvoorgeskryf word.

A current shortage of soccer fields inScottsdene has left surrounding clubs outin the cold.
According to Wilfred Nolan, secretary ofthe facility management committee of Cen-tral Park (the sports grounds in Scottsdene),there are currently only two soccer fields inuse after the City of Cape Town recently de-molishedone, tomakeway for theScottdsenehousing project, currently in construction.
“These two fields are now serving the twolocal clubs Northpine United and ScottsdeneUnited as well as all the schools in the area,leaving no playing time left for outside clubsto utilise the fields, as was the case in thepast,” he said.
Most of these clubs are social or churchclubs and are according to Nolan fumingover the current state of affairs.
“As many as eight schools and the twoclubs affiliated to the committee with about
15 junior and senior teamsare using it for practisesessions during the weekand to play official match-es on Saturdays. It istherefore difficult to ac-commodate any other soc-cer clubs,” he said andadded that the City of CapeTown has promised to de-velop two more fields, onefor clubs affiliated to thecommittee and anotherfor social clubs.
The city has not in-formed residents whenthese fields will be built.
“Although we are con-cerned about the situa-tion, we will have to turn down any more re-quests from outside clubs and groups as thefacility cannot handle any more bookings –until the city develops more fields.”
According to Nolan, any added utilisation
could, and most probably would, lead to com-plete deterioration of the fields.
At the time of going to print, TygerBurgercould not obtain comment from the BergdalSubcouncil.

Die statige ou akkerboom wat in HazelGelant se Kraaifontein-agtererf pronk,het nou wel nie kampioenboomstatus be-haal nie, maar sal dalk eersdaags tot ’ngedenkwaardigheid verklaar word.
Die boom, wat sowat 250 jaar oud is, is ver-lede jaar genomineer as kampioenboommaar is volgens prof. Brian Bredenkamp, ’nbosboudeskundige van die Universiteit vanStellenbosch, nie groot genoeg vir nasionalekampioenboomstatus nie.
Die boom se stam is ongeveer 5 m in om-trek, en is sowat 15 m hoog met ’n welige bla-rekoepel.
Die departement van landbou, bosbou envisserye het in 2003 die kampioenboom-pro-jek van stapel gestuur om bome as kampioe-ne te identifiseer en sodoende te beskerm.
Die bome moet óf baie oud, groot of mooiwees, óf kulturele of historiese waarde hê.Daar is sowat 60 bome in Suid-Afrika wattans kampioenstatus het – een van die groot-stes is die wildevyboom of “wonderboom” inPretoria wat ’n kroon van 62 m het.
Marian Nieuwoudt, beleidskomiteelid vandie Stad Kaapstad se afdeling vir ekonomie-se ontwikkeling, omgewing en beplanning,is egter van mening dat die oorsprong en ge-skiedenis van hierdie deel van die stad niegenoeg erkenning kry nie en wil aansoekdoen om die boom tot gedenkwaardigheid teverklaar.
“Ons kultuurskatte word nie vir die nage-slag bewaar nie.
“Die gebied ontwikkel so vinnig dat ons op’n dag gaan agterkom ons het al die mooi vangister ook uitgevee,” sê sy.
Nieuwoudt sal binnekort die aansoek in-dien by die omgewingsdepartement, en in-dien dit goedgekeur word, mag daar niks aandie boom gedoen word sonder die toestem-ming van die owerhede nie.

Haar boek, Never Quit, Never Give Up – MyStory, word Sondag in Kraaifontein op haarverjaarsdag bekendgestel, ’n geskenk vandie Here, sê sy.
Jane (34) vertel dat die boek met baie traneen innerlike wroeging geskryf is, maar datsy daarmee ander mense wil bemoedig.
“Die boek vertel van my eie geestelike reis,van ’n diep en donker tyd, en gaan eintlik nieoor my nie, maar oor elke vrou daar buitewat deur die trauma van verkragting gegaanhet,” vertel sy.
Tussen 1999 en 2001 is Jane twee keer ver-krag. Daarna is sy op die R300-deurpad ge-kaap en met ’n wapen gedreig terwyl syswanger was.
Vir jare daarna het sy haar verkragtingsgeheim gehou en alleen met die traumasaamgeleef, tot in 2009 toe sy ’n senuwee-in-eenstorting gekry het.
“Ek is ook in die jaar afgelê by my werken alles het net te veel geword.”
Sy is met post-traumatiese stressindroomen kliniese depressie gediagnoseer en is kortvoor lank in Stikland se psigiatriese hospi-taal ná ’n selfmoordpoging opgeneem.
“Dit is net met die genade van die Here dat
ek vandag hier is, en dit is in opdrag vanHom dat ek die boek geskryf het,” vertel sy.
Volgens Jane is daar honderde vroue enjong meisies in die gemeenskap wat daagliksverkrag word, en nooit die nodige ondersteu-ning ontvang om die trauma te verwerk nie.
“Baie van die sake word nooit aangemeldnie omdat die skuldigbevindingsyfer so laagis. Verder is daar ook honderde vroue watnie eers weet dat hulle verkrag was nie,” ver-tel sy en verwys na ’n geval waar twee jongmeisies op ’n afspraak besope geraak het enhulle verkrag is deur die twee mans watsaam met hulle was.
“As ’n vrou dronk is, is sy meer kwesbaarvir verkragting enkansydit dikwelsnie eersonthou nie. Dis maande of selfs jare daarnawat onderdrukte herinneringe begin uit-kom,” sê Jane en voeg by dat wanneer ’nvrou onder die invloed van alkohol is, sy dik-wels nie in staat is om toestemming vir sekste verleen nie.
Jane is deesdae ’n berader en motivering-spreker wat daarop gemik is om vroue te be-magtig.
“Moet nooit opgee nie, vrou, al lyk dit hoedonker. Hou vas aan jou kinderdrome en krydie hulp wat jy moet kry. God is jou hoop.”

A resident of Durbanville is run-ning the gruelling ComradesMarathon of 87km between Pie-termaritzburg and Durban onSunday 3 June to raise money fortwo scholarships.
For Derrick Msibi (43), a char-tered accountant, it is time to payback the favour that was granted tohim many years ago when he re-ceived scholarships and bursariesthat enabled him to attend a privateschool and study at the Universityof Cape Town (UCT).
Msibi said he wants to make itpossible for youngpeople to achievetheir dream of furthering theirstudies.
Msibi, managing director of In-vestment Solutions in Johannes-burg, commutes between his workin Johannesburg and his home inDurbanville.
He was the son of ordinary par-ents in Mbabane in Swazilandwhere he grew up, he said.
He attended the Waterford Inter-national School, where he matricu-lated in 1987.
Msibi then received a scholar-ship to study business science andachieved a BCom Honours degreeat UCT.
He qualified as chartered ac-countant in 1994, after which heachieved a Master’s degree in com-merce in 1995.
He has been living with his fami-ly in Durbanville since 1998.
He mainly finds the time to prac-tise when he joins his team matesfrom the Durbanville AthleticsClub early on Sunday mornings fora run.
“I was very fortunate that otherpeople came to my ‘rescue’ to fundmy studies,” he said.
“I want to repay this generosityof other people who got me to whereI am,” he said.
The scholarships will be at theTertiary School in Business Admin-istration (TSiBA), a business schoolbased in Pinelands.
Msibi was invited to be a non-ex-ecutive director of TSiBA five yearsago. His path crossed with TSiBA in1994 when he was a junior lecturerat UCT while he was still doing hisarticles.
“I saw a lot a young people witha desire to go to college to get a de-gree, but who often did not have thefunds,” he said.
He hopes to raise enough funds toprovide scholarships for at leasttwo TSiBA students.
“I have run the Comrades 11times, but I realised that since Istarted the doing road running, ithas largely been about myself, myambition and proving that I can gofurther and harder with each yearthat passes. This year is different,”Msibi said.

Nadat die Kaapse stadsraad aanvanklikvolgehou het dat sy lisensiedienste by dieDurbanville-verkeersafdeling steeds be-skikbaar was tydens opknappingswerk,blyk dit nou dat bestuurderslisensies wélnie vir sowat ’n maand daar uitgereik isnie.
Nadat ’n inwoner, Petro Stemmet, teenoorTygerBurger gekla het dat sy nie op 17 Aprilhaar bestuurderslisensie kon hernu hetweens die bouwerk nie, het die Stad se ver-keersdienste volgehou dat dié diens wel be-skikbaar was.
Stemmet het gesê dis nie waar nie.“Daar was geen tou nie of mense wat in ’n
ander tou gewag het om gehelp te word nie,soos die Stad beweer het nie, omdat geendienste gelewer is nie. Ek is altyd vriendeliken behulpsaam hanteer, maar ek is ongeluk-kig dat noodsaaklike dienste nie gelewer isnie weens bouwerke,” het sy gesê.
TygerBurger het egter weer navraag ge-doen nadat nóg ’n leser na aanleiding van dieeerste berig in TygerBurger gesê het hy ensy vrou kon op 4 April en twee weke laterop 18 April óók nie hulle bestuurderslisen-sies hernu nie.
Rui de Abreu het gesê hy en sy vrou wasop 4 April by die Durbanville-verkeersde-partment om hul bestuurderslisensie te her-nu. “Ons is gesê dat ons oor twee weke moetterugkom, omdat hulle weens opknappings-werk nie bestuurderslisensies kan uitreiknie.”
Volgens De Abreu was daar ’n kennisge-wing op die venster buite dat die verkeersen-trum hul dienste oor twee weke sou hervat.
Hulle het weer op 18 April gegaan, maarkon weer eens weens die bouwerk nie hul be-stuurderlisensies hernu nie. Hulle is toe na’n ander verkeersentrum verwys, het hy ge-sê.
“Dit het in die berig in TygerBurger ampergeklink of hulle die ander klaer tot ’nleuenaar maak,” het hy gesê.
Maxine Jordaan, woordvoerder van diestad se verkeersdepartement, het gesê naverdere ondersoek het dit geblyk dat die her-nuwing van bestuurderlisensies wél tydensdie bouwerk gestaak is.
Ander dienste is egter steeds gelewer, hetsy gesê.
“Die redes hiervoor was dat die geraas ty-dens die bouwerk veroorsaak het dat daarnie duidelike instruksies gedurende die oog-toetse gegee kon word nie.
“Daar is normaalweg drie kassiere, maareen was op ’n kursus. Een het met geld enafsprake gehelp, en die ander een het die pu-bliek met die afhaal van lisensiekaarte ennavrae gehelp.
“Die kassiere se kantore kon nie gebruikword nie aangesien die bouwerk daar ge-doen was.
“Kennisgewings oor die beplande bou-werk is vooraf aangebring en die publiek isvriendelik versoek om na nabygeleë lisen-siëringskantore te gaan,” het sy gesê.
Die bouwerk is verlede Dinsdag voltooi.“Aansoekevir diehernuwingvanbestuur-
derslisensies is reeds van 2 Mei af hervat endie sentrum hanteer tussen 95 en 117 hernu-wings per dag,” het Jordaan gesê.
“DieStad wil weer eens om verskoning vravir enige ongerief tydens die bouwerk. Diebouwerk het juis ten doel om beter diens tekan lewer,” het sy gesê.

Looking after our own children, howev-er, is simplynot enough. Withabit of crea-tive thinking, you and your privilegedfamily have to do something, big or small,to better the lives of less fortunate chil-dren. In doing that, you create a better fu-ture for your own children too. They willbe able to work and live among peers whoare solutions, not problems. That’s whyyou and me have the non-negotiable re-sponsibility to love ALL our children.

Die lokomotiewe en trokke het ’n grootversameling geword. Dit was van die heelbeste en duurste. Die motorhuis was omge-skep in een groot treinuitleg.
Menige ure is daar deurgebring terwylklein plastiese mense lewensgetrou geverfis, en geboue, spore en brûe gemaak is waar-op die treine kon loop.
Op 45 het ek my werk by Eskom bedanken tot die sending toegetree.
Ná ’n besoek aan Israel wou ek graag men-
se wat dit nie kon bekostig nie, die geleent-heid gee om te gaan.
Ek moes al die mooi treinmodelle verkoopvir die nodige fondse.
Nou woon ons in Parow en het ek tyd omweer aan ’n stokperdjie te dink.
Wat is die moontlikheid dat daar êrens indie Kaap ook ’n persoon is wat dalk sy lewelank modeltreine, wat nou êrens in ’n kar-tondoos op ’n rak stof vergader, versamelhet?
Is daar dalk iemand wat bereid is om hier-van vir my te skenk sodat ek weer dit watek verloor het, kan opbou?

In ons buurt is die betrokke dag ’n Maan-dag en reeds van die Sondagoggend af is dit’n toeloop van bergies wat in dromme krapen honde wat aanhoudend vir hulle blaf.
Die bergies vat klomp goed uit die drommeen gaan sit in ’n nabygeleë oop veldjie en sor-teer uit wat hulle wil hê en los die res netdaar.
As werkende persoon wil mens so graag op’n Sondag net rustig wees met stilte in jou
ore, maar die honde se geblaf duur heeldagvoort.
Dit is ’n algemene gebeurtenis dat jy in dieaand (wanneer mens vroeg in die bed wilklim) deur honde wakker geblaf word. Kandie huiseienaarsvereniging van kleinerdorpshuise nie ’n brief uitstuur aan die in-woners en hulle aanmoedig om hulle drom-me op die betrokke dag uit te sit nie, asse-blief?
Indien almal saamstaan, sal dit soveelfrustrasie vir menige inwoner uit die wegruim.

The workshops will be hosted by well-known South African artist and formerlecturer at the Community Arts Project,Garth Erasmus. Based on the exhibitiontitled “Uncontained: Opening the Com-munity Arts Project Archive”, the work-shops aim to teach the basic principles of
lino cutting, printing and fine and also toexamine the role of art in a pre and post-apartheid South Africa.
The workshops consist of a theory sec-tion as well as a practical componentwhere they will use the theories learnt toproduce lino prints.
Participants will receive all materialsfor the workshop and lunch.
They will also be encouraged to expressthemselves creatively, to show a criticalunderstanding of the subject as well asdisplay independent thinking.

South Africa will send a strongteam to the 14th Braille ChessOlympiad in Chennai, India tobe played in August.
Five players, Sam Isaacs, Fred-erick Liebenberg, Melvin Isaacs,Cicel Vosloo and MJ Terblanchewill represent the Proteas.
Clyde Leonard, who is the teammanager and also the director forall physically disabled players, isup-beat about the team’s chancesof bringing home a medal or two.
“It’s going to be tough, nodoubt about it. The players fromcountries such as Russia, Bulgar-ia, Poland and Czechoslovakiaare all top notch on the board.Games can last up to six hours,which means a lot of concentra-tion is needed.
“Ourgoal is to be ranked insidethe top 20 of the world, it will ac-quire a lot of hard work, but weare playing our way in the rightdirection. We won one medal lastyear in Greece, and I’m confidentwe can make it two or three thisyear,” said Leonard.
At the recent South AfricanBraille Open held in Worcester,the players showcased their abil-ities to cement their places in thenational team. Melvin Lucasfrom Parow and MJ Terblanche(Bellville) are the local ladswho’ll be testing their abilities
against the best in the world.According to Leonard chess is
a subject in many other coun-tries, giving the players a hugeadvantage.
“Countries like Russia actual-
ly have chess classes in theirschools.
“I would like to see the sportgrow to that extent here.
“Chess is a remarkable game,which is known to help improve
your logical thinking process. Itreally is no surprise that some ofthe top ‘brains’ in the world arechess players,” Leonard ex-plained.

The University of The Western Cape (UWC)will host The Fast and Flat Race on Saturday2 June at UWC’s sports stadium.
