Easter Afternoon Tea Christine Dover and Yvonne Osler would like to thank
everyone for supporting their afternoon tea on the 18th April. Special thanks to all the helpers, without you it wouldn't be
possible. Total raised was £1920 towards the town Christmas Lights.
Holy Cross MU March/April
Canon Barbara Packer, Diocesan President of the Mothers’ Union was the guest speaker in March. Barbara gave an insight into the ‘overseas experiences’ she has had with the MU. There are prayer links around the world and between November 30th and December 2nd there will be a wave of prayer with MU contacts in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Uganda and S. Africa. The other link is in W Bengal where there is no MU but a Women’s Fellowship. In these countries the MU teaches literacy, worship, faithfulness in marriage, first aid and faithful leadership. In areas where there was Ebola, food was scarce and there was no movement of people. MU members adopted orphans and we prayed for them. In Nigeria the link is in a rural area mainly Muslim with few Christians. Life is hard, the women have to walk for water, often contaminated which causes disease. It is a long walk to meetings and school which is highly valued. The bishop’s wife leads bible study. Women are trained to sew uniforms which gives them an income. Their gift to Barbara was a colourful dress embellished with MU logos and bible quotes. In Uganda with its history of violence and persecution and martyrdom of Christians, members are encouraged to support themselves, and to promote good hygiene. In the photographs we saw everyone looked happy despite their harsh life. We pray for them and their families. Anthony Wood was guest speaker in April, and told us about his ‘Life in Local Government-never a dull moment’. Anthony had a number of stop-gap jobs before finally deciding to become a rating assistant. This took him to many towns in England and even to Wales before returning home to Tynedale. After promotion to senior rating officer, he transferred to Housing Benefit. An interesting talk punctuated with humorous anecdotes, it was most enjoyable. Anthony judged the ‘pace egg’ competition which was won by Mary Hewitson. Next meeting 13th May, speaker Mr. H Bowron “Life on the Line”
The Monastic Way
The spiritual life is not a specialized part of daily life. Everything you do in the day, from washing to eating breakfast, having meetings, driving to work, solving problems, making more problems for yourself once you have solved them, watching television or deciding instead to read, going to a restaurant or a movie or going to church, everything you do is your spiritual life. It is only a matter of how consciously you do these ordinary things, how
attentive you are to the opportunities they offer for growth, for enjoyment, and how mindfully, how selflessly, how compassionately you perform them.
Laurence Freeman OSB
Laurence Freeman OSB is a Catholic priest and a Benedictine monk of Monastery of Sta Maria di Pilastrello, in Italy, a monastery of the Olivetan Congregation. He is the Director of

Hexham Deanery Report for 2018 (abridged version) This is an abridged version of the report of the activity of Hexham Deanery in 2018 written by Rev Jeremy Thompson and David Ratcliff. The Deanery Synod is composed of 5 members of the House of Clergy and 24 members of the House of Laity. Rev Jeremy Thompson, Rector of St John Lee and Warden with Newbrough is the Area Dean, David Ratcliff (Parish of Hexham) is the Lay Chair, the Deanery Finance Officer is Nigel Collingwood (Parish of Beltingham with Henshaw), and Sheila Williams (Parish of Holy Cross, Haltwhistle) is Deanery Secretary. Other members of the Deanery Standing Committee/Development Group are Evelyn Braid (Parish of St John Lee), Stephen Porteus (Parish of Alston), Rev Jon Russell (Rector of Allendale and Whitfield with Ninebanks) and Rev Andrew Patterson (Rector of Whitley Chapel). In 2018 the Deanery met in Synod three times. Topics/activities included:
Paul Rickeard, Diocesan Director of Education held discussions about possible changes to rural education in our local schools.
Gift of Years - a national programme supporting and valuing the ministry to, and of, older people. Deanery contact: Pam Nobbs (Reader at St John Lee) Deanery Plan for the future Pilgrimage – in 2018 the full length of the Alston Moor parish was walked (from
Nenthead via Garrigil to Alston on Day 1, and Alston to Lambley on Day 2) This was followed by Choral Evensong at Hexham Abbey.
“Bishops in Mission” weekend – quite a phenomenal series of events throughout the deanery led by Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham and coordinated by Rev Matthew Hunter and Dave Thornhill
2018 ended with a successful payment of the Deanery Parish Share – 100.32% was paid. Amazing. Several parishes contributed more than was asked for as a means of supporting those parishes facing difficulties. The Deanery Synod Representatives for our parishes are as follows: Holy Cross Church, Haltwhistle: Sheila Williams and John Clark St. Cuthbert’s Church, Greenhead: Cathi Dixon
An Easter Collect
God of Life Who for our redemption gave your only begotten Son to
the death of the cross, And by his glorious resurrection have delivered us
from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin,
That we may evermore live with him in the joy of his risen life;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
