Dear Parents/Carer

Last week, Year 6 pupils completed their SATs assessments. This is always a

stressful time for pupils as they have worked so hard towards this milestone.

Staff put every measure in place to ensure that the week ran smoothly so that

pupils were able to focus on the task at hand. Well done to the Year 6 pupils for

doing their best last week and to all of the staff involved; now the fun of

learning, without having to talk about SATs, can resume.

Last term, parents/carers were given the opportunity to complete the parent/

carer survey; this is an ideal opportunity for parents/carers to voice their views

about their experiences of being part of the Chadwell school community. I can

report that approximately 20% of the parent/carer community responded to

the survey last term. Governors have reviewed the initial outcomes and will be

scheduling a meeting to conduct further analysis, reviewing the written

responses to devise a plan of action. Thank you to those who took the time to

respond. I aim to share the key findings by the end of term.

There has been a push this term on ensuring pupils are wearing the correct

uniform. I’m pleased to report that the majority of pupils present wearing the

correct uniform each day. Thank you to those parents/carers who ensure that

their child is adhering to the school dress code. As the days get warmer, I would

like to remind parents/carers that there is a summer uniform you may want to

dress your child in. However, please ensure that the chosen footwear is

appropriate.

Next week is half term. Let’s hope that the weather is actually warm enough to

be able to spend some quality time outside enjoying it. School will reopen on

Monday 3rd June.

Have a good half term.

Important Message - Safety First

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has come to my attention that the pavement immediately outside

the pedestrian gates of the school is becoming congested causing a

potentially dangerous situation. Please may I ask that, once you have

dropped your child off in the morning or picked them up in the

afternoon, you vacate the premises and immediate area outside the

gates as soon as possible. Parents and children should not need to

precariously navigate around groups of other parents and children to

get into and out of the school site.

Groups of people on the pavement may mean that other pavement

users are forced to walk along the edge of the pavement on the other

side of the metal railings, which I’m sure you will agree, is very

dangerous.

The safety and welfare of our children is of paramount importance to

us at Chadwell. Please support us in ensuring that the journey to and

from school is as safe an experience as possible for all our parents and

children.

Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Mr Walker

What have School Council been up to?

School Council organised a very successful Red Nose Day in March. We were involved

in deciding what we should do and we chose to ask the children of Chadwell Primary

to wear something red and bring in a donation. Plus we sold 400 red noses through

our School Money website, in total we raised in excess of £750!

In our School Council meetings we have been getting many proposals about more

equipment to play with during the lunchtime period. As a School Council we put these

suggestions to Mr Walker. Together with the help of the PE Council we have now

installed a table tennis table which is in the quiet area at the moment.

We also had some questions from some Year Six girls who want to have equal time in

the football area. It seems the girls do not like playing football with the boys even

though this is allowed. For this reason, a group of years 6 pupils have come up with a

timetable where boys and girls have equivalent amounts of football time meaning

both genders are satisfied. At the moment they are amending the timetable to include

the new table tennis table and the basket area so that each year group has a chance

to use these facilities.

We have also discussed ways to raise money for charity and the school. The students

came up with lots of ideas including: boot sale/table top sale; a sponsored charity run;

colouring competition; pyjama day; book sale and more dress down days.

Some other suggestions that the children would like are: a basketball challenge;

penalty shoot-out; more fairs; a spelling bee; a sports challenge during the Summer

Term – different sports against other classes and to sell fruit at playtimes.

Small changes like the Table Tennis table being installed have a positive effect on the

school and they make the children happier as they have more fun things to do in their

spare time.

Table Tennis Table

Chadwell Primary School purchased an outdoor table tennis table for all the chil-

dren to use! The table can be used during break time, lunch time and during after

school club. Mr Haywood and Mr Halilaj agreed to purchase the table when the in-

door table was a big hit for the children. This will be ideal for all the children to stay

active and busy during their break and lunch times. It’s an exciting time for Chad-

well as the summer term is in full affect, loads of competitions and tournaments

(these include against different classes throughout the school and out of school)

Here are some pictures of our new table tennis table which is located in the quiet

area in the playground.

Athletics Competition

Twenty three children attended Cricklefield Athletics ground for a

tournament of four events; ’75 Metre Sprint, Long Jump, 600 Metre Race and the

Vortex Throw.

The children that took part were:

Year 6;

Mohmed, Adina, Edmund, Oriana, Rehan, Aimee, Reece, Samantha, Michelle, Taha,

Shyan and Beauyeux.

Year 5;

Owais, Nair, Danyal, Brakathan, Patricia, Essa, Paige, Caleb, Nabia, Steven, Yasmine

and Julia.

75 Metre sprint was an interesting event for the children as they had to run as fast

as they could to beat five other children from different schools.

Long Jump involved children jumping forward while taking off on two feet and

where they landed was recorded as their score.

600 Metre race consisted of one and a half laps around the track. This was a big

challenge for Chadwell as this race was focused on stamina and pacing

yourself.

Vortex throw - the vortex is an object you throw as far as you can. Children had

three opportunities to throw the object and the furthest score was recorded.

All the children took part in all the events and tried their very best, we don’t get the

official results until we return after half term. We will add the results in next month’s

newsletter.

School Start Times School starts at 9.10am each day.

The gates open from 9.am and will close at 9.10am.

In order for our children to gain the greatest benefit from

their education, it is vital that they attend school regularly

and should also be at school on time every day unless the rea-

son for the absence is unavoidable.

Children arriving late to school will be

recorded in the late book and consistent

lateness will be followed up in the late book and may result in

the Education Welfare Officer being informed.

Late Arrivals For those children who arrive late to school due to an

unavoidable appointment, they must arrive by 11am

at the latest.

Children arriving later than 11am will be refused entry

and will be asked to return at the start of afternoon reg-

istration (1pm).

A Guide to Instrument Lessons

At Chadwell, Parents can pay tuition money for their child to learn an instrument outside of

class. It is coming up to that time of year when we send out letters inviting parents to apply

for a place to learn an instrument. Here is all the information you will need for this.

We offer the following instruments to learn:

Strings: (these are instruments you rub a bow across the strings to play)

Violin Cello

Wind: (these are instruments you blow- through a reed or a hole)

Flute Oboe Clarinet Bassoon possibly

Brass: (these are louder instruments you buzz your lips and blow to play)

Cornet Trumpet French Horn Trombone Euphonium

Tuba

Piano:

The piano or the keyboard.

General Information:

Children will receive a lesson every week with a specialist teacher (except during SATS

week or if it is a bank holiday or if the teacher is absent)

Children will either be taught in 10 minute individual lessons or longer in groups, e.g. 3

children will have a lesson together for 30 minutes.

These are generally taught during lesson time. Please do not request that your child has

their lesson at lunchtime as the timetables are rigid.

Payments and Contracts:

The lessons cost £255 for the whole of the academic year.

They can also hire the instrument to learn from the Redbridge Music Service. This costs

between £15-£30 per term, depending on which instrument they choose to learn

Parents will need to insure the instrument under their household insurance.

Parents are contracted for the WHOLE academic year. We have to employ the music

teachers under a contract for the year and cannot just tell teachers that a child is giving

up. Please take this into account when you sign up.

Page 17: May 2019 Newsletter...Half Term Holiday The school will be closed for Half Term from Mon 27th May 2019 to Fri 31st May 2019 Children are back at school on Mon 3rd June 2019 Parent

We take two payments of £127.50 over the year. One in July before lessons start and one

in February, half way through. It takes a LOT of effort to chase up payments. Please be a

helpful parent and pay when the invoice is sent through. The time it takes to chase for

payment could be spent supporting your child in other ways.

Practice:

The child is expected to practice the instrument at home every week and parents are to sign

a practice book showing what the child has practiced. Their instrument teacher will also write

in this to indicate what they need to work on. If you would like to send a message to the

teacher, you can write one in here.

Parents need to encourage and get their children to practice each week, not just expect that

the child will practice without any help.

Taking care of the instrument:

Instruments that are hired cost a lot of money. Parents will need to ensure that the instru-

ment is stored carefully when not in use and it is not accessible by younger siblings who may

damage it.

Music books will be provided if your child is learning any other instrument except the Pi-

ano. Parents will be expected to buy any further music books beyond the first book and all

books for the piano lessons.

Piano pupils are expected to buy a full-sized keyboard for the child to practice on. Lessons

are a waste of time if they can't practice. Good makes to buy include Yamaha, Roland and

Clavinova.

Examinations:

If your child reaches a certain level/standard, they may be entered for a music exam at the

Redbridge Music Service by their teacher. Your child will prepare pieces for these exams and

you will be expected to take them to attend the exam.

If they are successful in the exam, they will receive a comment sheet and a certificate which

will be handed out in Certificate Assembly.

A Guide to Instrument Lessons

Orchestra and ensembles:

If your child plays an instrument, as part of the contract and lessons, when they reach a

certain level, they will be asked to join the school orchestra. They are expected to do this

as part of music lessons and are not allowed to opt out of this. We ask for parental

support in reminding the children of this.

They may be invited to perform in concerts for the whole borough such as The

Woodwind Festival at the Ilford Town Hall.

If your child gets especially good at their instrument, they may be asked to join musical

groups at the Redbridge Music School. These are excellent groups that offer your child

excellent performing opportunities. They may even end up performing at the Royal Albert

Hall when they are older if they continue with the lessons!

How many places do we offer?

We do have a limit to the number of places we offer and it depends on how many

children who currently learn the instrument are leaving or giving up.

What age to learn an instrument:

Violin and cello: It is possible to learn this from Year 1

Piano: Generally children get on better with the piano if they are Year 3 or 4 or older.

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet: It is possible to learn this from Year 2 but generally better to start in

year 3.

Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, French Horn: It is generally better to learn this from year

4 (or Year 3 sometimes)

What if my child doesn't get a space this time?

We may not have enough spaces to offer your child one so please don’t go out and buy

an instrument before receiving confirmation on learning an instrument. Also, please don’t

buy any instruments from Argos or eBay– you may end up with something substandard.

Wait for advice from the teacher. f your child doesn't get offered a place, we will put

their name on the waiting list in case a place becomes available.

A Guide to Instrument Lessons

How to decide which instrument my child will learn:

Ask them what they are interested in…. Watch some videos. If you go to the school music

website:

www.musicatchadwell.blogspot.com I have put links in the post “CHOOSING WHICH

INSTRUMENT TO LEARN, videos and links to watch with your child about the instruments.

They have to be interested to learn successfully. Otherwise it is a waste of your money.

Here are three links which can show your child and let them listen to and see the different

instruments. Please talk to them about which instrument they would like to learn.

This link is like the Youtube one below and allows you to listen to players talking about their

instruments.

https://www.philharmonia.co.uk/explore/instruments

This link takes you to a list of orchestral instruments and lets you hear them but not see

them.

https://www.mydso.com/dso-kids/learn-and-listen/instruments

This link shows you players from the Philharmonia orchestra demonstrating and talking

about their instruments and showing them:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqR22EoucCyccs5J639SCefaM7mD9dMSz

This link is from the BBC and has recordings and interviews and information about the

instruments of the orchestra including the ones you can learn.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/orchestras/learn/guidetotheorchestra/

Any other questions:

I do hope this information is helpful. If you have any questions, please contact the school

office and ask for Mrs Peugniez in regard to learning an instrument.

Samba Music Workshops

During the second week of the Summer Term, we welcomed the Music Workshop

company (https://www.music-workshop.co.uk) to Chadwell to run some special musical

workshops with Reception up to Year 6. Every class were invited along to the hall to learn

about the dance music, Samba, which is from South America. They were given the

opportunity to play Surdos and Congas, Claves and Tambourims creating a class informal

performance together, learning patterns and playing call and response rhythms.
