He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead.’” Matthew 28:5-7 Wasn’t it a wonderful Holy Week and Easter Celebration at John Wesley! Starting with the Palm Sunday drama retelling the Holy Week story, and then to the Prayer Walk, and the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services challenging us to reflect more meaningfully on our actions and attitudes. To the rain-free Easter Egg Hunt where we hosted over 300 children and their families for a fun-filled morning! And then the culmination with the Easter Hallelujah’s, and the joyful spirit, beautiful music, surprising children’s sermon, an Easter journey and a mighty chorus proclaiming, “He Lives!” Yes it was an inspiring day! But now, here we are a little over a week later, and, while we still sing Easter hymns, I’m guessing the excitement of Easter has waned a bit, and life is back to normal again. But what if we could capture the essence of Easter – the resurrection, victory, hope, new life, every day? What if we could be assured that “He lives” not just on Easter, but all the time? Well, I believe we can be Easter people all the time, and let me suggest something we can do. Prayer. That’s what Jesus always did! And one form of praying is to pray with scripture. Let’s see what it would look like if we took this resurrection scripture, and made it part of our prayer life… “Do not be afraid.” Dear Lord, I find myself fearful and worried so often. Please resurrect a faith in me that releases me from fear, and helps me put my life in your hands. Lord, today I give you this fear of mine…. “I know that you are looking for Jesus.” Dear Jesus, sometimes I feel an emptiness, a void, that I can’t quite name, and I’m tempted to fill that void with material things, or food, drink or something or someone else. I give you this temptation, knowing that the answer to every longing is found in you… “He has risen.” Lord, with your resurrection, you promise new life. As the Bible says, “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new creation. The old life has passed away, the new life has come. And I need to be made new in this area of my life… “Just as he said.” Lord, you keep your promises, but sometimes I don’t put my whole trust in you. I doubt you when I can’t see or understand. So right now, I give you this situation, trusting in your promise, “Seek, and you will find, knock and the door will be opened, ask, and it will be given”… “Come and see.” Just as the angel invited the women in to reveal that you had risen, so too, you invite us to see you revealed every day through our blessings, through other people, through opportunities we are given. Lord, today I saw you here…. “Then go quickly and tell his disciples.” Lord, I know my faith is personal, but it should also be public. Give me courage to talk about my faith and what you mean to me in my life. I pray to be able to have a conversation with this person about…. Yes, the joy and meaning of Easter can be ours every day. Every time we pray. In Jesus’ name, Amen! Thanks to author Lysa TerKeurst for her inspiration. Pastor Rebecca May 2019

Sanctuary Banners and Seasons of the Church Year – Part 5

The final season represented by our banners is that of Pentecost. Pentecost follows the 50 days of the Easter Season, which starts at sunset on the eve before Easter Day. It is the festival celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church. RED is the color of Pentecost. It signifies the fire of the Holy Spirit and the tongues in which the disciples spoke (Acts 2: 1-4). Our banners show the Holy Spirit descending “like a dove” (hearkening back to the baptism of Jesus) on one and a burning bush (reminding us of God’s appearance to Moses in the Old Testament) on the other.

The Holy Spirit was poured out on Jesus’ followers over 2,000 years ago. These banners remind us that God is always present with us and pours out His Holy Spirit to each and every single one of His followers to this very day.

“We have so often walked under these banners, Sunday after Sunday, possibly not really knowing what they represent. They weren’t hung just as a piece of décor, but to serve as constant reminders of the truths that we hold tight as Christians. I hope and pray that as we enter the Sanctuary in the future, we would stop, notice and remember the significance of each banner, knowing that they hold great importance to each of our lives and to everyone who comes to know Jesus personally.” Amen!

Please come as we seek God’s guidance and blessings on our church life and fellowship with one another.

Prayer and Praise: service Sunday May 12th

John Wesley Prayer Teams: On the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month after the 10:30 service, there are prayer teams to pray directly with and for those in need of comfort. As Jesus said, “Where two or more are gathered in my name, there I am with them.” If you would like prayers said for you or a loved one, please come forward, or wait in your pew, and teams will come to you. Anyone can be on the prayer team, it is a blessing for both prayers and those being prayed for – to offer renewed hope. If you would like more information, or wish to join the team, please contact Bobye Anderson 508-648-3730 or [email protected].

Josh Cribben Eagle Scout Project On Friday, April 12th and Tuesday, April 16th, High School Senior Josh Cribben conducted and completed his Eagle Scout Project at John Wesley! We’re honored that the church was the benefactor of his project where he created a beautiful fire pit with wooden benches! We know our church (and especially the Youth Group) will LOVE this new addition! We can already taste the delicious s’mores that will be roasted and conversations that will be had around this fire pit. Thank you SO much to Josh, his parents, Tommy & Bonnie Cribben and the four other Eagle Scout candidates who helped Josh with this project…and ultimately, with his journey with the Boy Scouts of America. Visit our Facebook page to see more photos of the project. Congratulations Josh!

SUNDAY SCHOOL SERIES IN MAY: Old Testament: “Living a Life of Meaning” (May 5th - June 2nd) The Book of Ecclesiastes offers a critical look at human pursuits and weighs the value of everything we do and desire in this life. Students can assess the author’s proposition that apart from God, life is meaningless. Each student will comprehend that God has a purpose for his/her life and seek to discern His direction and live a life that glorifies Him.

YOUTH GROUP SERIES STARTING IN MAY: “MADE” | A Series About Sexual Integrity (April 28 - June 2) When it comes to puberty and sex, we all have certain ideas and expectations of what it should - or shouldn’t - be about. But what if all those thoughts and ideas are actually missing the mark? In this 4 week series, as we look at God’s design for sex, we’ll discover that there’s more to it than we think. We’ll specifically learn that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, all of us are valuable, sexual things matter and we are in control of our own bodies. Join us for this timely discussion (that’s age-appropriate).

UPCOMING EVENTS

“I-Am-N” Exile Night Sleepover/Fast (May 17th 6:00 pm to Saturday, May 18th 9:00 am) Every spring our Youth Group participates in a fast/famine in order to raise funds for a global cause. This year we are pleased to partner with “The Voice of the Martyrs” which serves our Christian brothers and sisters around the world who are persecuted for their faith in Jesus. Through practical and spiritual assistance, VOM leads other members of the Body of Christ into fellowship with them so they do not have to suffer alone. “I-Am-N” Exile night will be a 15 hour famine where we simulate being with our global

family members through watching videos, reading scripture, having discussion, writing letters, playing games, sleeping outside and so much more. We do this in order to raise support for the VOM three funds: Bibles to Captive Nations Fund, Families of Martyrs Fund and Front-Line Ministry Fund. All 5th-12th grade students are invited to join us for this memorable night. Please contact our Youth Director, Allison Deyo at [email protected] or 508-548-3050 if you have questions and/or to sign up your student(s). More information will be released in the coming week. Last Youth Group: Outdoor Laser Tag & Dinner (Sunday, June 9th)

2018-2019 school year has been one for the books! Our group has grown deeply in their faith and in their relationships with their peers. So in order to celebrate…all 5th-12th grade students are welcome (and highly encouraged) to join us for a fun evening of playing outdoor Laser Tag and dinner! We’ll meet at Ultimate Battleground in Bourne at 3:45 pm, play for two hours and then have dinner at Way Ho Chinese Restaurant in Buzzards Bay.

MANDATORY: Please let Allison know if your student(s) will be attending as we need to make reservations and plan transportation for students. Click here to fill out the electronic Permission Waiver for Laser Tag. Sunday School Celebration & Church Picnic

We will be wrapping up and celebrating an amazing school year, Sunday, June 23rd during our 10:30 am service! We’ll recognize our fantastic Sunday School teachers and students and have plenty of surprises! Then we’ll enjoy an outdoor Picnic/Cookout following the 10:30 am service. There will be plenty of food and games for everyone! In the meantime, we’ll still be meeting at 9:30 am every Sunday morning!

PAST EVENTS RECAP: Easter Egg Stuffing Party

On Sunday, April 14th, 14 youth students and three adults helped stuff over 2,500 Easter Eggs for our Community-Wide Easter Egg Hunt! To get them through the 2 hours of stuffing, students were given handy breaks and then pizza/soda at the end. Thank you so much to everyone who joined us! You all are awesome!

RECAP: Palm Sunday Palm Wavers Thank you so much to all the children and youth who helped participate in our Palm Sunday Drama! We hope the procession and palm-waving contributed to the Easter story coming alive for you. Let us continue to worship the King! Hosanna in the Highest!

RECAP: Easter Egg Hunt We had an awesome Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 20th where it is estimated over 300 adults and children joined us to celebrate Easter! Children were divided into four age-appropriate hunting groups where they hunted over 3,500 stuffed Easter Eggs! Thankfully the rain held off and children were able to hunt outside…God is amazing! Before and after the hunt everyone was welcomed in our Fellowship Hall to participate in different games, crafts and activities. It was an awesome time for everyone! We have to thank our amazing volunteers who helped serve in so many different capacities. Thank you for loving our community and having a blast with them.

Check out all of the photos on our Facebook page here.

RYANNE FERNEY We are so excited to announce that our May 2019 Children & Youth Spotlight honoree is 4th grader, Ryanne Ferney! How in the world can we describe such a young lady?! For starters, Ryanne is full of life. She is always smiling, laughing, bouncing around and making friends. We would all be wise to follow her example. In addition, Ryanne is one of the most sincere and introspective individuals we know. Ryanne is not shy when it comes to the things of God. She asks tough questions, is always trying to learn and sees God in every aspect of her life. It’s absolutely amazing. We enjoy having her a part of our many environments, including Sunday School, Worship Our Way (WoW), Vacation Bible

School (VBS) and our Children’s Choir. Ryanne, we know God has amazing things in store for you. Thank you for allowing us to come alongside you as we grow in the love of Christ together. Congratulations!

Safe Sanctuary: JWUMC’s New Plan and Procedures As a congregation we are blessed that our church has truly been a sanctuary for us. To help make John Wesley a safe place for all, the church has adopted a Safe Sanctuary policy. The new policy is based on guidance from the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church, adapted to the particular blessings and challenges of JWUMC.

Our God is a God of safety. John Wesley UMC intends to offer safety and security to all who enter our doors, and the Safe Sanctuary policy will help make that possible. This Safe Sanctuary plan formalizes many of the practical measures John Wesley has been taking for years for the safety of the congregation, staff, and guests. The policy includes specific language on special concerns for children and youth, background checks for staff and volunteers, response to emergencies, and security and safety throughout the property and grounds of the church, as well as on missions and other church-related trips.

Special thanks to Allison Deyo for all her work drafting and adapting the policy, and for developing the many necessary forms for our children, youth, and volunteers. Special thanks as well to Mark Karsner of the Staff Parish Relations Ministry Team, who used his legal expertise to align the policy with Massachusetts law, and to Tom Hoke, who shepherded the policy through the SPRMT, the JWUMC Trustees and the Leadership Team. Copies of the policy are available in the church office. Anyone with any questions is welcome to review those copies, or see Pastor Rebecca.

Plant Sale Help: The sale will be Friday, May 24, 9 am - 6 pm and Saturday, May 25, 9 am – 2 pm. Volunteers arrive at 8:30 to prepare for the sale. Set up will be on Thursday, May 23 with heavy work (tents & tables) from 9 am – 12 pm and light work (unload & organize plants) from 1 pm – 5 pm. We need a security guard to watch the plants on Thur. & Fri. evenings from 7 pm – 11 pm. Pack up will be Saturday, May 25, 2 pm – 4 pm. This is a wonderful fundraiser for the church and brings people from the community to our church and grounds. If you can help, please contact Tom Hoke at [email protected] or 617-834-8124.

Who Does Coffee Hour? We all do! Coffee Hour is a wonderful time of fellowship, conversations, new friendships, comfort and happiness. Each of us has an opportunity to take part in this wonderful ministry. The sign-up sheet is on the Fellowship Bulletin Board just inside the Fellowship Hall. Instructions for guidance are there also. There are a variety of ways to do coffee Hour: individually, with another person, as a family or make your own team. A lot of the supplies are provided in the two coffee hour cupboards and the freezers. Sign up and be a blessing to many. If you have any questions you may contact Karyn Briggs or the leadership team member in charge of the month you sign up for. Thank you so much!

Cape Cod Healthcare will have a Blood Drive here at JWUMC on Monday, May 6th from 12noon until 6pm. All of the blood donated stays here on the Cape and Islands to assist our families, friends and neighbors.

I Support The Girls: Pslam 82:3-4: Give justice to the weak and the orphan; maintain the rights of the lowly and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy.” The homeless need our help in a way that they don’t normally get. Dana Marlowe made some lifestyle changes and lost a lot of weight. While buying a new wardrobe she asked what she could do with her undergarments and they said homeless women desperately need them. At that moment she decided to make a

difference and in just 3 years has collected and distributed over 3,000,000 bras and hygiene products. She has established over 50 affiliates across the U.S. and globally. Their mission is through an international network of affiliates, I Support the Girls collects and distributes essential items, including bras, underwear, and menstrual hygiene products, allowing women experiencing homelessness, impoverishment, or distress to stand tall with dignity. For the month of May, we will be collecting gently used or new bras and new menstrual hygiene products to be sent to Dana to help her in this amazing cause. A woman shouldn’t have to choose between feeding herself and her personal health. Please place your donations in the designated bin in Fellowship Hall under the Missions bulletin board.

From the Archives #22 Church records

The purpose of this month’s column is to ask for your help. Previous articles have all been based on the records we have inherited from those before us. This is an opportunity for us to improve our record keeping for future generations. Record keeping involves deciding what needs to be kept and how to preserve it which is a very broad topic. On this occasion we are considering only two items: church annual reports and pictorial directories. Over the years annual reports have had different names: fourth quarterly conference, quarterly conference, charge conference, annual report. In recent years most churches have settled on “annual report”. The only confusion relates to the year of the report. Depending on when the annual meeting is held during the year, the report may be labeled as the current year or the year just completed. A search of our archives and the church office indicates that we have annual reports covering the period from 1959 to the present but lots are missing. So this request is for you to look at that huge file you may have at home labeled “church business” or some such. Please look in there for a copy of an annual report from any of the following years: Anything before 1959, then 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1997, 2009, 2014. Perhaps more interesting is the second request: do you have at home any pictorial directories that are not shown below? If so, we would like to have a copy in our archives. You will notice below that from 2000 onwards the directories do not record the date when they were published. If you have any information that would help to verify the date that would also be important.

From left to right below: 1976, 1984 (no pictures), 1987, 1992, 1996

From left to right below: dates unknown, maybe 2000, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2012

If you have information about the missing annual reports or the pictorial directories, please contact me by phone (508 540 7851) or email ([email protected]). K. Peal, April 2019

Living by Great Bay in May

In the month of May, I am blessed By Nature at its very best.

Dormant all winter, shrubs and trees Now sway gently in the spring breeze.

Climbing hydrangeas, purest white Along my fence are a delight.

It’s time to plant summer flowers. Daylight is here for many hours.

A young bird fledges from its nest To gather seeds, then takes a rest.

Tree peonies are blossoming; A welcome sign of every spring.

Columbines and a bleeding heart Flourish by God’s own special art.

Geraniums in window box Vie for attention with the phlox.

The hibiscus shoots now so small Will, in August, be eight feet tall.

God’s creations on these May days Make me rejoice with prayer and praise.
