INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY VISUAL IDENTITY MANUAL

The Indiana Wesleyan University Visual Identity Manual ensures the success of

our identity through consistency of use. Identifying specific colleges, schools,

programs or academic units within these guidelines strengthens each component

of the University, as well as Indiana Wesleyan University as a whole.

Why does IWU need graphic standards?

As a diverse, growing, changing University we are still building our unique identity. We must enhance and strengthen our reputation by presenting a relevant brand and a consistent, compelling visual identity. Our rapid growth and plans for continued expansion require a focused and effective approach to telling our story.

This Visual Identity Manual provides guidelines for everyone to embrace and help preserve a unified visual identity and perpetuate the brand of the entire University. With the application of our graphic standards, we can better manage our identity and the image we want to project.

We seek one look, one voice – a common element that runs through all of our materials for all colleges and schools within IWU no matter what format, application, size or color. These standards offer a flexible and useable framework for design decisions while still delivering a consistency that is unmistakably recognized as belonging to Indiana Wesleyan University.

Please use the Visual Identity Manual as a reference guide for your work in developing communication materials. While the Manual addresses most major applications, it is not possible to address every design situation that may arise. When you have any questions, I encourage you to contact the Marketing and Communications Department at 756-677-2036, or email [email protected]. We have a talented team of professionals available to serve you.

The success of the IWU brand identity depends on the consistent use of these standards by everyone involved in the creation and execution of communication materials to help share the IWU story. The Administrative Cabinet has reviewed and adopted these standards and asks our community to follow and embrace them.

We have invested significant resources in research and exploration of the IWU brand identity. Many of you participated in this important process. Thank you for your investment of time and expertise. The pages that follow represent the labors of many and provide a critical tool in our effort to most effectively share the IWU story.

Thank you for your commitment to mission, vision and to these graphic standards!

Letter from the President

Introduction 1.2

INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY VISUAL IDENTITY MANUALMARCH 2012, VERSION 2

The new visual identity must be used consistently over

time. It is the University’s policy that the signatures,

type fonts and marks described in this Manual are the

only authorized marks to be used in all communications.

Within the framework of the new system, there is flexibility

to accommodate the needs of units throughout the

University.

The University’s Marketing and Communications office

is responsible for ensuring that the new visual identity is

preserved and enhanced through effective, well-designed

communications. It monitors the use of the system and

makes graphics available to the University community and

other authorized parties.

If you have questions concerning the system or need

to obtain graphic signatures, email your query to

[email protected].

Use of University Marks on Commercial Goods

The Indiana Wesleyan University name, seal, nameplate

and athletics logo are registered marks owned by the

University. These marks may not be used in any medium,

other than approved University programs, without the

approval of the Associate Vice President for Marketing and

Communications, or his or her designers. That University

official must review the use of our marks in conjunction

with that of an outside vendor or firm. Student groups

wishing to use the University’s marks on commercial

goods (e.g., T-shirts, bumper stickers, etc.) also must

secure such approval. Submit all requests for use of

these marks to the appropriate party listed above. All

manufacturers who produce goods bearing any of the

University’s trademarks must either be licensed or receive

special permission to produce such products without a

formal license agreement.

If you have questions regarding the use of the University

name, seal, nameplate or athletics logo, contact the

Marketing and Communications Department at

[email protected].

The Indiana Wesleyan University

Nameplate

The nameplate on the left is the primary element of the

Indiana Wesleyan University visual identity system and

must appear on all official communications. It may not be

modified in any way. It is available to all users in multiple

formats.

The Americana font is exclusively used for the nameplate

and building identification. Refer to page 4.5.

The primary nameplate honors the historical use of

stacked elements in identifying Indiana Wesleyan

University. Its selection as the primary nameplate is

intended to strengthen and maintain that strong visual

image.

A special horizontal nameplate was created for usage in

wide and shallow spaces. This nameplate should always

be the second choice to the primary nameplate. Visit

the identity website at family.indwes.edu/University-

Relations/Marketing.aspx.

When greater specificity is needed, a secondary element

may be added to the Indiana Wesleyan University

nameplate to create a more specific “signature.” The

additional typographic element can be the unit name,

campus or URL. These signature options are presented in the

following pages.

Refer to pages 3.3–3.5 for nameplate coloration options.

As a general rule of thumb, it is always preferable to use the

primary (i.e., highest-level) nameplate representation that

will adequately communicate your identity as part of Indiana

Wesleyan University.

Stand-alone Nameplate Structure

with Unit Identifier

(Service Level)

The name of major units within Indiana Wesleyan

University, such as various administration levels, may

be added to the nameplate as a unit signature. In all

cases, use the full, correct name of the unit. These unit

signatures should be used for stand-alone applications

such as window/entryway and vehicle signage. This

vertical configuration is not for stationery usage.

The unit name should be set in all-caps Slate Std Bold,

centered with +100 tracking.

A red .5 pt solid rule, created in InDesign, is placed

between the nameplate and the unit identifier.

Any unit desiring a unit signature should request one be

created. Go to the identity website at family.indwes.edu/

University-Relations/Marketing.aspx.

Lower-level units or divisions within a larger unit cannot

create a unique signature. They must use the signature of

their umbrella unit.

The Indiana Wesleyan University URL may also be added

to the nameplate as an identifier.

Note: Wesley Seminary at Indiana Wesleyan University is

an exception in identifying consistent brand elements.

The seminary has its own Visual Identity Manual.

When using the nameplate structure in a field of color, use the 2X containment box (preferred) but make it taller to hold the unit identifier.

Nameplate Placement on Publications

The Indiana Wesleyan University nameplate must appear

on the front or back of all printed communications.

For typical vertical letter size applications, use either a

centered asymmetrical left/right position or a bottom

centered position. For front cover usage, use the

preferred containment construction device (see page 2.5)

to frame the nameplate into a designated space —

whether you use a contained color field or superimpose

over an image.

To create a sign-off signature on mail panels, use the

University-wide nameplate with the standard 4-line

typographic format (see page 2.4). This unit always

positions in the upper left corner. Use the preferred

containment construction device to position — do not

bleed off the vertical solid rule.

Front cover: University-wide signaturecentered in asymmetric left/right position

Front cover: University-wide signaturecentered in bottom position

Front cover: Academic signaturecentered in asymmetric left position

Front narrow cover: Always use University-wide signature and couple with typography that identifies piece with a specific unit or program. Always use centered bottom position.

TEXT MESSAGE

Back cover: Always use the University-wide signature and couple with address block highlighting school, program or unit (see page 2.4).

Avoid a static centered position

PowerPoint Templates:

Title Slides (OPTION 1)

A standardized banner and color system allows consistent

branding across all University PowerPoint presentations.

The screens shown accommodate all types of IWU

signatures in the identity system. The nameplate should

be placed on the lower left-hand corner of the cover page.

For all subsequent pages, the nameplate moves to the

bottom.

Use the current web identity background pattern as a

repeating element connected to the visual display of IWU

signatures.

Use the fonts system (see pages 4.1–4.3). A single sans

serif font is recommended for all headlines and small text.

Shown is the Slate Std family. Use substitute fonts when

Slate Std is not available. For interior body text, use ITC

Berkeley Oldstyle Std. If Berkeley is not available, stay

with the same sans serif font as the headlines.

lifestyle imagery, depending upon the audience. Note the

use of a modified address block and contact information

based on specific program campaign requirements.

When displaying the nameplate for University-wide

vehicle applications, always use the 1-color IWU Red

version for maximum legibility on a white background.

For permanent die-cut vinyl displays on darker colored

vehicles, always use the signature reversed out to white.

Display the nameplate on side doors (and rear doors,

where applicable). For wider expanses, use the horizontal

version. Always use the URL-based signature for rear

placements. When a vehicle is dedicated to a department

or administrative unit, always use the IWU nameplate.

For exterior or interior banners, always use the nameplate

surrounded by IWU Red for strong contrast and color

brand recognition. Strong photographic images may

also be used to emphasize the nameplate (dual flanking,

double-hung banners). When used as a single-flank

banner, display the nameplate set into the preferred IWU

containment box (see page 2.5). Strong contrasting Slate

Std typeface set into various color spaces provides high

impact. Always pick colors to pull from or contrast with

the image shown (see supplementary color palette on
