Yes, animals can get skin cancer too. There are many types of cancer of theskin that pets can get but in this articlewe will focus on one of the types thatare affected by sun exposure:Squamous Cell Carcinoma.Squamous Cell Carcinoma is themost frequently diagnosed carcinomaaffecting the skin in pets. It is mostcommonly seen in pets that have nonpigmented (pink) and hairless skin inareas that are often exposed to thesun. Most often these areas are thetips and edges of the ears, the nose, around the eyes and on the abdomen, prepuce and inguinal (groin) area(commonly in dogs that like to sunbathe). Pets that are short haired, white or have pink skin are most atrisk (for example bull terriers). Whiteand grey horses or horses with pinkskin on areas such as the nose arealso at risk.

Skin cancer in animals

large areas of skin to be removed(commonly on the abdomen).Cats that have been left untreated canlose ears and noses if they areseverely affected. So we much preferto treat these skin cancers when theyare little and can be dealt with easily.Quite often if a cat has a severecancer on their nose it is too late toremove without destroying the cat’squality of life (as the nose may haveto be quite drastically resected toremove the cancerous tissue). The best prevention is to limit sunexposure. If your pet is a sunbatheryou can use pet sunscreen but it isbest to avoid sun exposure during10am and 4pm wherever possible. If you notice any changes in yourpet’s skin get your vet to check it outas soon as possible.

Skin changes you need to look outfor:● Areas of colour change● Scaly & crusty lesions● New growths or a change incolour or size of an existing growth● Sores that bleed easily or areasthat do not heal● An area that your pet iscontinually licking or scratchingIf you notice any of these signs, earlyintervention is best and often ischeapest. Quite often if detectedearly, most skin cancers can be easilyremoved. Most small Squamous CellCarcinomas can easily be frozenusing a histofreezer during a consultor cauterised in the operating theatre(sometimes with only sedation andlocal anaesthetic). In more extensivecases your pet will require a generalanaesthetic. Some animals require

“I hope I inspire people who can hear.Hearing people have the ability toremove barriers that prevent deafpeople from achieving their dreams”This quote was made by MarleeMatlin, a deaf American actress whowon the Academy Award (1986) asbest actress in the movie For Childrenof a Lesser God. The research anddevelopment that has taken placeover the last century to create aninclusive environment for the hard ofhearing is truly exceptional. Fromearly listening horns or ear trumpetsused to collect sound & funnel thisinto the ear, through a range oftechnological advances andprogressing on to the wide variety ofmodern day digital ‘assistive listening’devices available today. Each ofthese advances by dedicatedresearchers was and is designed toimprove the lives of deaf people, remove the barriers & restoreconfidence, that in turncontributes todeaf peoplemovingtowardsachieving theirgoals. MEMORABILIATABLE

The Lions Roared -Letter to Editor (name and address supplied

Towards the end of last year I wasapproached by Lion John Clare, telling me his intention to write a bookregarding the History of the LionsClub of Waroona, as they would becelebrating their 50 years of “Lionism”in Waroona and asked if I had anyinformation of early years. FortunatelyI did have the first 10 yearsinformation, photos and thewhereabouts of most of the earlymembers, and I took them down tothe museum where Deb Tyler andJohn sorted through them. In Marchthis year John informed me (veryexcitedly) that he had been thrilledwith so many members comingforward with their history ofhappenings and his book was goinggreat guns. Imagine everyone’s

surprise and delight when the bookwas introduced at the reunion onMarch 30th 2019. “Congratulations”– well done John and all whohelped. What a great history. Overthe past 50 years Waroona hasbeen privileged to have had thebenefit of all Lions members whohave spent hours volunteering andworking to keep and raise moneythat stays in Waroona and helps somany organizations. We now havea young Leos Club volunteeringand the benefits they will learn inyears to come will never beforgotten (Just ask the oldies). Awonderful meal, catching up withfriends made the 50th a night toremember.See you all at the 60th (maybe!)

The Power of the Blessing

Waroona Library - A novel of love, crime, magic, fate andcoming of age, set inBrisbane's violentworking classsuburban fringe -from one ofAustralia's mostexciting new writers.Brisbane, 1983: Alost father, a mutebrother, a mum in jail,a heroin dealer for astepfather and anotorious crim for ababysitter. It's not asif Eli's life isn'tcomplicated enough already. He's justtrying to follow his heart, learningwhat it takes to be a good man, but

There is power in ‘theblessing of Pentecost.’

For many, Easter is justa public holiday startingon Good Friday and

finishing on Monday or Tuesday. However, for some Christians Eastercommences with forty days of Lentleading up to Good Friday – the dayJESUS was crucified. It’s a season ofreflection and preparation before thecelebrations of Easter. During Easterwe thankfully consider GOD’s act oflove in sending HIS SON to die asacrificial death for our sins, followedby the celebration of HIS victoriousresurrection from the dead on thethird day. For yet others, the seasonof Easter is not reserved for only afew days in the year but is a dailyreflection of all that GOD has done forus through the death and resurrectionof HIS dear SON. Something notalways mentioned in Eastermessages, is the interval betweenCHRIST’s resurrection and ascensionto the Heavenly realm - an eventwitnessed by many and recorded inthe Bible and other historical records– for JESUS remained a further fortydays on earth before HE ascended. The Bible gives us the reason in Acts1:3 ‘After the sufferings of HIS cross,JESUS appeared alive many times tothese same apostles over a forty dayperiod. JESUS proved to them withmany convincing signs that HE hadbeen resurrected. During theseencounters, HE taught them thetruths of GOD’s kingdom realm andshared meals with them.’ JESUS waspreparing HIS disciples. HE appearedfirst to Mary Magdalene. At that time

in history, women were esteemed verypoorly but JESUS proved HIS love forthe downtrodden because despite theculture and man-made traditions of theera, HE demonstrated that HE usesmen and women to fulfil HIS plansand purposes. JESUS joined two ofHIS followers who were walking on theroad to Emaus. At first they didn’trecognise HIM and were sad anddisappointed because the ONE theythought would deliver them fromRoman oppression was now dead, along with all their hopes. Imaginetheir surprise when HE ‘interpreted tothem things pertaining to HIMSELF inall the Scriptures.’ They urged HIM tostay so HE went home with them, broke bread and blessed it as HEhanded it to them and the Bible says,‘their eyes were fully opened and theyrecognized HIM.’ Then HEdisappeared! JESUS turned theirsorrow into joy! Then both Cleopasand his companion rushed to tell theother disciples JESUS was alive andhad also appeared to the women. Thismeeting was behind locked doorssince the disciples were afraid theymight be crucified next. SuddenlyJESUS stood in their midst and said‘May you have peace.’ They wereterrified thinking HE was a ghost!JESUS said; ‘Why are you troubledand why is it that doubts come up inyour hearts? See MY hands and MYfeet, that it is I MYSELF; feel ME andsee, because a spirit does not haveflesh and bones just as you beholdthat I have.’ JESUS asked for foodand ate in their presence to prove HEwas real. The Bible says HE openedup their minds fully to grasp the

meaning of the Scriptures saying tothem; ‘In this way it is written that theCHRIST would suffer and rise fromamong the dead on the third day andon the basis of HIS Name repentancefor forgiveness of sins would bepreached in all the nations, startingout from Jerusalem. You are to bewitnesses of these things. And look! Iam sending forth upon you thatwhich is promised by MY FATHER.Wait here until you receive powerfrom on high. You will be guided byHOLY SPIRIT, make sure you listenand receive it ....’ JESUS said to HISdisciples, ‘All authority has beengiven ME in heaven and on theearth. Go therefore and makedisciples of people of all thenations, baptizing them into theName of the FATHER and of theSON and of the HOLY SPIRIT,teaching them to observe all thethings I have commanded you. And, look! I am with you alwaysuntil the end of the world. He thatbelieves and is baptized will besaved, but he that does not believewill be condemned.’ JESUS wasteaching and preparing HIS followersto ‘receive power from on high’ – theHOLY SPIRIT; the promised gift givento all whom GOD has called and whobelieve in HIS SON. There is power inthe blessing of Pentecost – powerenabling the newly birthed ChristianChurch to carry out its mission, powerfor believers to bear witnessto the Gospel of JESUSCHRIST and power toperform mighty wonders.GOD’s power! Be blessed tobe a blessing, Cheryl.

Foxes also pose a riskon urban blocks as they can spreaddiseases such as distemper, parvovirus, and mange when theycome into contact with humans andpets. Controlling foxes on landholdingsless than 25 acres in size can bechallenging as foxes dens can besituated offsite and foxes move throughthe area opportunistically. What exactly does aRemedial MassageTherapist do?Remedial therapy is acombination ofdifferent massagetechniques and

bodywork modalities. Primarilyremedial therapists are a little differentto massage therapists in that theyhave trained in more modalities thanonly massage. For example, when Idid my training in RT (RemedialTherapies) in 1995 the syllabusincluded Swedish massage, sportsmassage, deep tissue massage, acupressure, cupping, shiatsu, reflexology, Touch for Health (basickinesiology), pregnancy massage, sports nutrition, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and clinical training.I’m sure there were one or two moremodules but that was a number ofyears ago and essentially these werethe main ones. Over the years I havedeveloped my own style which mosttherapists do as you continue to learn, perfect, keep up with industryrequirements and standards etc. Infact, in June of this year I will beembarking on learning the EMMETTTechnique with the man himself RossEmmett. The EMMETT Technique isa unique form of body therapy. I havefound this technique to be hugelyefficient and it has helped meimmensely with bursitis in myshoulder (occupational hazard) andplantar fasciitis in my foot from arunning injury. So much so that I refermany of my clients to an EMMETTpractitioner. Hence, after havingreferred many of my clients to anEMMETT practitioner it wassuggested to me to learn it so that Icould assist more of my clients. So, Iwaited until the founder of thetechnique was facilitating the first 2

Using the Innate wisdom of plants to nourish and nurturespecific techniques to encouragechange in soft tissues, to encourageand improve the body’s own repairmechanisms. The remedial massagetechnique can be strong or soft, shallow or deep depending on theinitial assessment. Each individualwill be treated differently according totheir presentation of signs andsymptoms and assessment. The benefit of remedial massage isthat it can help stimulate bloodcirculation to damaged joints andmuscles, which as a result assists toremove toxins that may have built up.Also, the massage can reduce anxietyand stress. While both types ofmassages have many benefits, remedial massage in particular helpsto address a wide range of aches, pains and injuries. Conditions such asneck pain, back pain, scoliosis pain, sport injuries and many more issues, which can be treated through use ofmany specialised massagetechniques such as the ones I havelisted. With my expertise in floweressence therapy I am able to usethese remedies topically in my clinicon the body that may need a helpinghand in relaxing, letting go or reducinginflammatory pain from pressure buildup in soft tissues. These are the WAbush flower essences and are gentle, safe and very effective when used incombination with any remedialtherapies. My work in vibrationalhealing is also expanding as I will beleaning about the Australian BushFlower Essences which not only useAustralian flowers from all overAustralia but essences from majorland areas around the world such asAntarctica, Arctic, the Amazon andChina. Stay tuned to this as this willbe next level in energetic andvibrational healing. Yours in WellBeing Sandra

modules (6 in total) in Perth and signedup. As a registered RT you need to do aminimum number of hours of trainingeach year to remain insured. I choseEMMETT training this year as part of myeducational hours. I look forward tohelping many of my established and newclients with the EMMETT technique. Most people know massage to be forrelaxation and it is brilliant for that but ifthere are aches and pains or a history oftrauma and ongoing chronic pain thenremedial massage (which can includerelaxation) is very effective. Here is alittle bit of information about the two.Relaxation MassageA relaxation massage essentiallyinvolves helping you feel relaxed andcalm. The aim of a relaxation massageis to give you the chance for your bodyto catch up from the daily stresses oflife. When you decide to have this typeof treatment, you’ll experience thefollowing techniques:A massage that focuses to relax andsoothe youThe techniques will generally be longsmooth flowing strokes called effleurageA massage therapist will enhance themassage by setting the mood of theatmosphere by using possibly essentialoils (an oil that carries a distinctive scentextracted from a plant *please note I donot use EO in my clinic as I have foundtoo many people react to them), warmtowels and relaxing musicThe amount of pressure will be deepbut not to the point of pain and/ordepending on the individual a more lightor meditative touchRemedial MassageRemedial massage is a very populartype of massage therapy. This particulartreatment holistically addresses theentire body to ease out injuries, achesand pains that many peopleunfortunately get at some point in theirlife. It uses a combination of many

What is an Opilione?Scientifically, Opiliones, arecommonly known as ‘harvestmen’.They are a part of the spider groupArachnida, although they are notspiders. They live in your localbushland and your garden. Unlikespiders and other Arachnids (such asScorpions, ticks and mites) they donot have fangs, stings or venom asthey don’t need them! They do notspin webs, but amble around, turningover the soil and mulch looking fortheir meal.

Harvestmen are little guys.Typically, their body lengthdoes not exceed 7 mm, withsome species measuring lessthan 1 mm. Harvestmen haveonly one body part, not twolike spiders. They come inlong and short-leggedvarieties. Some are peashaped with long legs, othersthat hunt, are armoured withbig shielded arms out thefront (called pedipalps). Youwill only ever see two eyes

on these creatures, as opposed to thesix or eight on spiders and they chewtheir food, rather than sucking it up.Some eat fungi, some scavenge deadmatter while others hunt small insects. What natural garden cleaners! Andeven better, great insect controllers!Just like the other Arachnids really. All Arachnids are vital to our gardenwhether we like them or not. Yes,even the spiders! The harvestmen justlook a little… different.Interesting harvestmen facts:

OPILIONES

Harvestmen are found on allcontinents of the world, exceptAntarctica. There are over 6,000 species, and new species are found everyyear, but many have become extinct. Fossils over 400 million yearsold have been found. They share another commonname with a spider and a crane fly:Daddy longlegs. When attacked, they candetach a leg, much like a skink dropsits tail, and some release a horriblesmell as a defence. They are hard to find becausethey are capable of thanatosis(“playing dead”) to escape predators.

WA has the worst rates of family anddomestic violence in Australia and thenumber of incidents is unfortunatelyincreasing. Family violence affectspeople from all walks of life making iteveryone’s business and all of ushave a part to play in preventing it.Changes to WA’s tenancy laws havenow come into effect removingtenancy-related barriers for thosetrying to escape abusive relationships.Uncertainty about housing can oftenforce people to stay in abusiverelationships. Previously someoneleaving a rental property at shortnotice because of family violencewould have to pay rent until a newtenant is found or until the agreementexpires. The cost of breaking a leaseoften results in victims, includingchildren, choosing to either stay in a

New tenancy laws to support those affected by family violenceviolent home or facing potentialhomelessness. Previously there was noavenue for a victim of family violence,who wants to stay in a rental home, tohave the perpetrator removed from thetenancy agreement and victims wereprevented from changing the locks orimproving security at the premises.Damage to a rental property caused byan ex-partner would also result in thevictim owing compensation to a landlordand/or being listed on a tenancydatabase as an unsuitable tenant.Tenants affected by family violence willnow have new choices and options,including:ending a tenancy legally withoutinvolving the perpetrator, by providingevidence of their situation;staying in the rental home by applyingto the Magistrates Court to have aperpetrator removed from a lease;

dealing with disputes aroundproperty damage, unpaid rent andbond disbursement to avoid financialburden when leaving a tenancy;changing locks, without a landlord’spermission, to prevent a perpetratorregaining access although a copy ofthe keys must be given to the landlordwithin 7 days;improving security at the rentalhome at their own cost, for exampleinstalling CCTV; andremoval of their name from atenancy database if the blacklistingwas due to family violence – so as toensure they are not excluded from therental marketplace in future. Some people with investmentproperties may have concerns aboutthe changes

An illegal pyramid scheme has beenuncovered that targets WA women andmasquerades as a support network. Two women, one from the South-Westof WA, have contacted ConsumerProtection reporting the activities of thepyramid scheme which is beingpromoted as a Gifting Mandala, prompting a warning for people not toget involved. The gifting circle involvesa woman paying a ‘gift’ of around $270to become one of eight ‘fire’ elementrecruits. They must then recruit newparticipants so they can progress to‘wind/air’, then ‘earth’ and finally ‘water’when they are promised a ‘gift’ of$2,160 in return for their originalcontribution. As long as membersrecruit others into the scheme, themoney keeps flowing, but it willeventually collapse and those on lowerlevels invariably lose their money. There is a spiritual element beingutilised by promoters of the schemewhere the gifting is portrayed as womenhelping other women to realise theirdreams by displaying qualities ofsharing and caring. A warning wasissued in June 2018 about an almostidentical pyramid scheme A LivingWorkshop which also appeared tooriginate in the state’s South-West.Commissioner for Consumer ProtectionLanie Chopping said the group isshrouded in secrecy with participantstold not to discuss their involvementoutside the group unless they are

Illegal pyramid scheme masquerades as a women’s support network (Gifting Mandala)recruiting new members. “Once the newmember joins the scheme, they are invitedto chat in a closed Whatsapp group and, once they recruit eight others, they willadvance to a higher position in thepyramid with promises of higher returns,”Ms Chopping said. “Often the new recruitsare family members and friends, so theserelationships may be put in jeopardy whenthe scheme eventually collapses andpeople are demanding the rewards theywere promised or want their money back.“We are told that social media is beingused to source new recruits. It’s importantthat people know that it is illegal to eitherpromote or participate in pyramidschemes and those involved may faceprosecution. “Gifting circles or pyramidschemes have been around for many,

many years but only really benefit thefew people at the top. People shouldlook through the spiritual veil and rejectany approaches to join these types ofschemes. “Participants are sworn tosecrecy which prevents many fromcoming forward which also thwarts aproper investigation from being carriedout. We are keen to catch theoriginators and promoters of theseschemes so we can put a stop to theirillegal activities.” Anyone withinformation about the Gifting Mandalaor any other pyramid scheme is urgedto contact Consumer Protection byemail [email protected] orcall 1300 30 40 54. Waroona GOLF NEWS

Chook Yard Farmer Ken

Certainly the last 7 days at ChookyardHotel have been rather traumatic tosay the least. The first a visit by “Mr Fox” in 2.5years and then possibly a heart attackby “Fucolo”” whilst being groomed forthis coming weekend’s 100th HarveyShow. Our show stopper BelgianDuccle Millefleur just six months agowon Feature Bird of the WaroonaShow 2018 just 8 days after ourtraumatic house fire which was agreat tonic at that time. It will meanback to the drawing board for theBelgians as Mr Fox also eliminatedtwo pullets as part of the attack. Atotal of five birds were taken orsavaged by the fox and probably cubsand one hen “Marisol” badlywounded. She was sedated byWaroona Vet Ron Schneider to repairher wounds and fully investigate thetotal damage. Each day she has beengetting better and dipping her beak inAnitone to ensure fluid aids herrecovery and five days after heroperation she decided it was time tohave a decent feed. Marisol has beenthe mainstay of our Gold LaceWyandotte breeding programme andwhilst Vets are not cheap ourdaughter Caitlin thought she deservedanother chance to enjoy her time inChookyard Hotel. A special publicthank you to Ron, Froz and allnursing personnel at Waroona Vetsfor their expertise and caring help.Just have one GLW pullet to share

Bridge just after the Alcoa turnoff withMumma Sow, Poppa Boar and a dozporker piglets returning from theHarvey Poultry Auction a few weeksago. It brought traffic to a standstilland unfortunately half the porkersfollowed the parents down thewestern side and the other halfscurried back down the eastern side. One can only assume they were wildand not escapees from a homepiggery and were able to re-join theothers to become a very large pigfamily again. This weekend despitethe loss of Fucolo, will be preparingthe rest of exhibits from ChookyardHotel and will be interested in how aduo of young Faverolles and a GoldLaced Wyandotte Standard Pullet areadjudicated at the 100th AnnualHarvey Show. The Health andHygiene Manager Caitlin will be busyon her RDO’s helping prepare birdsfor show time. Win, lose or drawPoultry Exhibiting makes a greathobby. Certainly with so many gamesof AFL Football before, during andafter Easter a sports lover hascertainly been spoilt and the residentsof Chookyard Hotel have been put tobed early so only a few minutes arelost of game time. It has been a toss-up as to who has free range timeallocated as all poultry loves greengrass and the dirt softer to scratch. Some even like testing their jumpingskills from the many pots around thehouse and different to their dry, course poultry mix and shell grit. Tillnext time .The Football starts in 10minutes and unusually on aWednesday Pre Anzac Day game, somust sign off. Bye for now, ChookyardFarmer Ken

pen time with Marisol. She hasenjoyed first class board and lodgingconditions in the family living roomand also time grazing in a smalltemporary play pen on the southerngreen grass on the southern side ofthe house. Chookyard Hotel hasinvested in protection equipment andthe fox vermin will be in for a surprisenext visit. Unfortunately a pair of foxdeterrent lights did not scare off theearly morning visitors and especiallyin rural or outer suburban areasunwelcome visitors are a fact of lifewhich chook lovers have to deal with.Missed one fortnight at MundijongMarkets and after waking to thedamage done in the bantam, managed to visit Mundijong to seewhat was on offer. Only bought asmall transfer cage in the sundriessection and in thepoultry/bird/Duck/Geese/Guinea Pigsection the bench was full and almostright back along the fence. Thebiggest yarding I had witnessed for 3years and obviously the main reasonbeing school holidays and it waspleasing to see prices remain firm butfair pleasing both buyers and sellers. The line was so long I sold a dozenfertile eggs privately before the sale tosave at least an hour prior to theMarket auction being completed. Theheavy rain just prior to Easter wasbeneficial to the Cannas and Hibiscuspurchased from the markets and also“Wallys” Orchard .Blooms have beenmaintained and also have fitted outsome nice Indoor plants fromWaroona Home Hardware under thepatio and front porch. Saw anamazing sight on top of the Wagerup
