out better. Someone plugged inhis brand new electric guitar(he'd been dying to use it but wecouldn't find a power point in thefield) and managed somehow tofuse the lights. In the suddendarkness I put my foot throughthe bass drum and the drummerpunched me on the nose. When the lights came on Ipretended nothing had happenedbut my singing didn't go over toowell as I had to sing through thehandkerchief that was holdingmy nose together. The audience applauded aboutas loudly as the cows had butthey didn't leave a mess, whichwas something. I had to give uptrying to sing and the group wentahead just making music whichdidn't sound half as good as itwould have if I'd been singing atmv best. But it did seem to getthe crowd dancing. When the group were asked todo another gig the next week, Iwas delighted. Until they told methey'd voted against having alead singer. But I could still bemanager if I liked.I refused, of course. The group still plays aroundtown tho' they don't sound thesame without me. But I don'tcare.Just as soon as I've taughtLightning to play guitar (whichmeans I've got to learn myselffirst), I'm going to make it big onthe pop scene. Just you wait.

Did I ever tell you about how Inearly became a pop star? Is'pose not. It's not the mostinspiring story ever told. Iwasbetrayed, cut off in my prime.Which is why you don't see meon Top of the Pops and why youdon't sigh lovingly over mypicture pasted on the wallbeside Donny's. It also

AND NfJW FOR~(JNETIIIHowT o B e AJournalill you readers must haverealised by now what .abrilliant band of merryworkers we are. Go on, admitit, you know we are.Seeing as you admire us somuch, you may wen havedecided that you'd like to be ajournalist (and we use theword I O O S E l I y ) just like wot weare ...How do you become ajournalist? Ah" well. We'renot sure if we should tell youthis, but it's quite easy. Justso long as you are naturallytalented and can spell properand use grammar like wotwe can. The rest is silence, assomebody once said.Shakespeare, was it? Nowthere's a fella who would havemade a good journalist.Maybe.

ON YOUR MARKS ...How do you start then? Wellit's a good idea to do somewriting while you're still atschool. Apart from all those

history essays and things, we'mean. If you have a schoolmagazine, write a feature forthat. Something like, "Why Ishould be Editor of the SchoolMagazine" - somethingthat's sure to get printed. And, of course, you canalways try writing letters toyour local paper, It's a goodidea to have somethingcontroversial to write about. They don't really want toknow thaJ you had a double-yolked egg for breakfast orwhere yo u found your

grannie's false teeth last timeshe lost them.In fact, nobody wants toknow where you found yourgrannie's false teeth. Not evenyour grannie. If you're feeling really stiff-, upper-lippish you could evenwrite a letter to The Times ..Inorder to do this you have to

put on a handle-barmou sta ch e a nd some plus-fours and sit on a shootingstick. Only retired majorswrite to The Times.Or, i f you're reallydesperate you could alwayswrite to us. We'll printanything.GET SE,T .....Before you leave school youcould try contacting a fewpeople and telling them howmuch you want to be ajournalist.Go and see the Editor ofyour local paper. He'llprobably ask you jf you can do.shorthand and typing, sobluff. Say yes and, if he asksfor a demonstration tell himyou don't want to waste anyenergy until you've got thejob.O f course, if you wanted to, work for magazinesyou'd

have to write to somebodylike Valli and we wouldn'twish that on anyone. Still, best to be prepared, so if youdo get an interview with amagazine Editor remember tobe trendy - we're a verytrendy lot.Wear something colourfuland untidy that'll endear youto the rest of the staff. Don'tgo in looking like a model oryou're likely to get you're eyesscratched out. That's whynone of our 'models will comein any more, they just standoutside and shout at us"The Editor will want toknow why you want a job, sothink of something .scintillating to say like, "WellIwas going to be a lavatoryattendant but I deeidedthis'ddo .. ."Then she'll probably askyou what sort of qualities ajournalist should have and

[ Us Lot Are]you can say somethingabsolutely creepy like, "Well,as far as I'm concerned youpossess all the qualitiesessential in a brilliantjournalist . . ."That works with somepeople but don't try it withValli. That's what Kim saidand she only got the jobbecause Valli thought she wasrelated to the Williams Twins("We'll get a few free scoopshere folks," she thought).GO!!So, once you've got the jobwhat will you be expected todo?Well, there's the floors for astart. You'll have to brush, wash and polish those everynight after all the others gohome and then you have tomake sure that the Editor'sdesk is tidy and clear up themess where she gave Kim a

going over earlier on.Then, of course, you'll beexpected to make coffee forthe rest of the staff - realcoffee, not instant, plus twosugars, an itsy-bit of singlecream and a digestive to gowith it.Asyou may have gathered ajunior, or trainee, is reallyjust another word fordogsbody. But don't worry. Atleast one day a week you'll getthe chance to write somethingthrilling - like the captionfor a photograph - realbrain-taxing stuff.Themain-thing toremember about being ajournalist is that you have aresponsible job to do. Thethings you write may be readby a lot of impressionableyoung people.Hence, you must besensible, sincere, respectfuland fully aware of theimportance of your job. Youmust never, ever writeanything silly like this. That'dnever do ...

He was waiting for her atthe bus stop again after schooland when they got offtogether at the other end, heoffered to walk her borne.Angie could hardly believeher luck. When they got to herfront gate they stopped."Well here we are!" "Then suddenly he paused, and jerked his head in thedirection of the house nextdoor."Your neighbours still onholiday, then?"Angie looked up at the

darkened windows of thehouse next door."You mean the Thomsons?"He nodded."Yes, they'll be away foranother whole month yet -lucky things! They've gone to

But, before she could besure that she wasn't justseeing things, tbe lightswitched off. "Jane had just gone too faT this time ~..Before I knew what I was doing, 1 hit outblindly and sLapped her face ... "Jane was one of those girlsh o seemed to h a v eeverythi ng - weal thyparents good looks, and shewas clever as well. In a way, Iquite liked her,. though shewas very different from me.Isuppose looking back onit . I was jealous of her, forsometimes she really used toget on my nerves ... Y ou see,she has this tendency to be abit critical of people whoweren't quite as lucky as her.Once or twice, when shetried it on me, Ielt so mad Iwas fit to burst ... And thenone day Idid!It was coming up to Jane'sbirthday, and she was havinga party. We'd been talkingabout it at school for weeks -it promised to be one of thebig events of the year. One morning, just a coupleof days before the partywe were chatting about it atbreak. Suddenly, Jane askedme what Iwas going to wear.Well, 1knew she was boundto wear something reallygrand and new, but Ihadn'treally thought about what Iwas going to wear."Just myoid brown dress, Isuppose," 1 told her. "It's .reatly all I've got."Well, I've got to admit, thatdress isn't exactly the latest inParis fashion, but it's alright, and what Jane said nextreally took me by surprise."Oh dear," she laughed."You can't be serious! Notthat old thing! Surely youcould get a new one for myparty. It s a special occasion, remember! ""I don't think there'sanything wrong with it," Imuttered. And then she laughedagain. "I suppose not," shesaid, "if you don't mindlooking a bit dowdy."

That did it. Suddenlysomething snapped inside me ..Istruggled to speak, but thewords wouldn't come - andthat was when Ihit her, rightacross the face.If only I'd stopped to thinkwhat Iwas doing, but,Ididn't.For a moment we just stoodand looked at each other, andher face went pale. 1 wantedto say Iwas sorry, but thewords wouldn't come. Then, suddenly, Iheard avoice corning from thedoorway behind me."Have you gone mad?"I turned round. Itwas MissDawson, the form mistress -and from the look on her faceIknew that she'd seen

everything. She went up to Jane and puther hand on ber shoulder."Are you alright, dear?"Jane still looked a bitshaken and, in fact, sheseemed close to tears, but shenodded her head anyway."Yes, thanks. I'm okay."Then Miss Dawson turnedto me. "I think you'd bettercome with me," she said.Without a word, 1 followedher out of the room. 'You'rein for it now,' Ihought tomyself. But 1 couldn't helpthinking whatever happenedto me now Imore thandeserved it.We got to Miss Dawson'sroom and she asked me to sitdown. Then she went behindher desk and sat for a momentjust looking at me. I couldn tbear to meet her eyes."I think you owe me somekind of explanation," she saidat last. Her voice wa s verycalm, and somehow it gave

. me the courage to speak."I don't know what cameover me," I stammered. "I'mreally sorry. I never meant to

hit her. It's just that shepushed me a hit too far. Iostcontrol. "Well, Miss Dawson gave mea fair old lecture - abouthow wrong it is to strikesomeone, no matter bow farthey push you - and Iusthad to sit and listen to herwithout a word. Iknew shewas right. When she'd finished, shesent for Jane and told me toapologise to her. Poor Jane, she still looked reallyshattered, but she tried togive a little smile when Iwentup to ber and said how sorry Iwas.Vet somehow, just sayingsorry didn't seem enough. Itwas impossible to explain howbad Ifelt."1 guess I'm partly toblame " she said. "I shouldn'thave acted that way aboutyour dress. It was really nastyof me.""Oh, look," I said. "Iknow you didn't really meanit."Well, after that, everythingwas officially forgotten andforgiven - on the surface, atleast. But, 1 reckon neitherJane nor I will ever reallyforget what happened .One thing, I know I'll neverlet myself lose control likethat again - no matter howfar I'm pushed.

Sad news for allthose of you whoare in love withScott - he'salready lost hisheart to another. _

Love AllScott and I have a love-haterelationship.Ihate him and he lovesme.Iknow that he loves mebecause when he sees mecoming into the office in themornings he raises his eyesheavenwards and says, "Ohblissful toad!"Blissful toad. Not bad, eh?I realise that a lot of yougirls are going to be veryjealous about this. But it can't be helped.Someone as devastating,as charming and as witty asmyself is bound to capturethe hearts of all those wholook upon her, Ahem.Take Kim..Go.on, takeher. Do us all a favour.Kim, despite the fact thatshe sticks chewing gum tothe bottom of my shoes andfrequently refers to me as"that fat fool who sitsopposite me", really adoresme.lt's quite embarrassing attimes. Last week, sheactually left me a notesaying, "You aredespicable" which is Frenchfor "You are my hero".

Terribly touching. But back to Scott. It was only the other weekthat I realised things weregetting serious, when my newmug shot appeared in themag..for the first time."Honestly. BtigId," he said, the anguish showing on hisface, "how could you let themprint a picture of you lookinglike that?"It upsets him, you see. Mysmile is something sort of

special to him - he just can'tbear to share it with the

world. That's why hescribbles some specs, beardand moustache on my pictureevery week when he gets hiscopy of Pink - that's Scott'sway of trying to conceal mytrue beauty. It's pathetic towatch him, I can ten you.If it carries on like this I'mgoing to have to ask Valli tomove him.I can understand that hewants to be close to me butthere really isn't enoughroom for both of us on mychair.Poor lovesick Scott. But Iexpect he'll get over meeventually - or maybe he'll

just have to get up and goround ...Just the jab ...I have just been to the vet."Your fur's looking a bitdingy," Valli said patting meon the head. "Time for yourfeUne enteritis jab, is it?" Sooff I went to the vet.Actually, I have to confess. That bit up there is a lie.Valli didn't say that to me(she wouldn't dare!) and Ididn't go to tbe vet.Not by myself. I took mycat.

"What a nice little chap,"the vet said, stroking my cat."Actually, it's a girl.""Oh?""Yes.""What's the little ladycalled then, eh?""Gary.""Gary?""Mmm. Thought it was aboy y'see, until earlyone morning when I ... ""Erhum. I don t want toknow about that.""Oh." cWhile we were talking,Gary had fallen asleep on thetable. One thing that catsreally good at is falliogasleep. Can do it anywhere."Good-natured cat, is it?"he asked."Oh yes.""Would you like to holdher then, while I give her theinjection?""Who, me? No fear!"Gary woke up when theneedle went in her. And thevet wasn't exactly asleepeither. Not with half-a-dozensharp claws and a nice set ofsharp teeth sticking in hisarm he wasn't.We left the surgery indisgrace.I shall never be able to goback there again. .But I t doesn't matter. I'vehad all my feline enteritisjabs now.
