May 2017 Winger School Newsletter

From the Office of the Principal, Mr. C. McInnis….

May Newsletter

May! Such a short little word but one with such high expectations on it. We expect that with the month of May, we will experience warm, sunny weather, lots of bright col-ourful flowers and spring scents. Fortunately these things are uplifting and help us to accomplish the expectations that we must meet at this time of year.

We are gearing up for the EQAO assessment and although it only technically effects the grade threes and sixes, the rest of the school is involved. While the “testing” ses-sions are going on, the rest of the school tries to minimize unnecessary movement in the halls and eliminate the noisy chatter that sometimes occurs in the halls. Additional-ly, our LRT, Mrs. Kolbinson will be adjusting her schedule for working with students and staff, to accommodate assisting the teachers on the EQAO assessment days. Please re-member that this assessment offers important information to our assessment profile for our students. It will be appreciated if appointments could be avoided during the as-sessment timeframes. Information will follow as to the specific dates for each of the grades.

The second term is always like a race to the finish. Staff are focusing on ensuring that the curriculum expectations are completed by the end of the school year as well as complete the necessary administrative tasks that are required for the year’s end.

Please pay attention to the school calendar and newsletters to stay tuned to all the important activities in the last two months, by the way, I can’t believe that it is almost the end of the year. Time truly does fly when you enjoy what you are doing!!!!

From the Teachers at Winger . . . .

MAY NEWS FROM GRADE 4/5

Spring greetings from the grade 4/5 classroom! We have enjoyed taking advantage of the warmer

weather to use the outdoor classroom. Please be sure to send your child to school with a refillable

water bottle and a hat so we can continue with outdoor activities. We have been hard at work in Liter-

acy with reading and analyzing poetry. Students are reviewing parts of speech (nouns, adjectives,

verbs and adverbs) and counting syllables as they follow specific formats to write various types of po-

ems. When the writing is complete, students will be illustrating and preparing booklets for publishing.

Look for these to come home early this month for you to enjoy!

In math we have just completed a unit on transformational geometry and symmetry and students

enjoyed using grid co-ordinates to play “Battleship” and then extended that learning to locate places

in an atlas using grid co-ordinates. Students used pattern blocks, “mirras” and grid paper to create

symmetrical designs. Our next unit in math is a measurement unit and we will be estimating, measur-

ing and recording Area, Volume and Capacity using a variety of strategies and materials. Creating a

creature using centimetre cubes and measuring its volume in cubic centimetres is a favourite explora-

tion in this unit. We continue to work on numeration skills (adding and subtracting with regrouping

and multiplication and division) in daily bell work. Reviewing multiplication and division facts at home

will be beneficial for all students.

In Science, the eco houses were very successful and all of the designs kept the ice from melting for

2 hours. We even had some designs that passed the 6 hour mark! Students are to be congratulated

on their creative thinking and designs for this experiment! A unit test on energy will be coming up

soon. A “Study Buddy” Guide will come home to help students prepare for this test.

May is a busy month and we are looking forward to Music Festival, Jump Rope for Heart and Track

and Field and Grade 4/5 Day at E.L. Crossley! Stay tuned for more information on these events.
