December 2016 Winger School Newsletter
From the Office of the Principal, Mr. C. McInnis….
Mr. C. McInnis,
Principal
As the holiday season fast approaches, take time for what is really important in your life, family and friends. Don’t forget to tell your children the important messag-es, “ I love you” and “I’m here for you”. Take time every-day to read to your children and ask them about what they are learning in Math as well. Your interest is a great way to consolidate learning.
The students are getting ready for the Holiday Concert which will be held on Tuesday, December 20th at our school @ 2:00 & 7:00. Also, don’t forget to stop by the Penny Sale and Bake Sale happening the same day in Room 12, open from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
I wish you a safe and happy holiday season and all the best for a great 2017.

Crossley Drama Dept. presents . . . .
by Patrick Barlow
Patrick Barlow, writer of the Broadway and West End hit "The 39 Steps", has retold Charles Dickens’
holiday classic, A Christmas Carol. Both playful and poignant, this thrilling adaptation uses a small com-
pany of actors to bring some of Dickens' most beloved characters to life. From Scrooge and Tiny Tim to
Bob Cratchit and Mrs. Fezziwig, Barlow's A Christmas Carol~uses nothing more than some simple props,
fresh physicality, and the power of imagination to convey this timeless story of redemption. Witness
Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation from a stingy miser to a man who generously celebrates the spirit of
the season all year long, in this highly theatrical adaptation.

Parking Lot Safety concerns
This is a friendly reminder that morning supervision outside starts at 8:45 am. If you drop your child(ren)
off before this time your child(ren) must wait outside in the back until supervision starts. Rain or snow, a
decision to bring them inside is made at 8:45 am.
Also, there is no stopping at any time in our bus zone, especially in the mornings. Buses can arrive any-
where from 8:50– 9:05 and if parents are parked in the bus zone, buses cannot drop off in a safe manner.

From the Teachers at Winger School . . . . Grade three and four with Mrs. Morgan-Rauh
I would like to begin by thanking all students for their wonderful job in preparing for and hosting our Remem-
brance Day Assembly on November 11th. Well done! Winter is just around the corner! We are pretty excited
about the change of seasons and have been working on our musical every chance we get! Save the date, De-
cember 20th for our annual Christmas concert. We have two shows, a matinee at 2 pm and an evening show
at 7 pm. See you there!
In Literacy, we continue to work on vowel combinations and the sound patterns they make in our weekly
words. Students are to be congratulated on improving spelling dictation marks each week. The next step is
to transfer these skills to everyday writing.
In writing, students have all written short narratives to accompany an illustration from the picture book, “The
Mysteries of Harris Burdick” by Chris Van Allsburg. (He is also the author and illustrator of the famous chil-
dren’s book, “The Polar Express”.) We have taken quite a bit of time to learn about the writing process, right
from ideas on an organizer to several rough drafts, editing and now they are being published. Be sure to look
for them soon on our hallway bulletin board.
In reading, we have enjoyed learning about the Canadian author, Gordon Korman who published his first
book at 12 years of age. We have just finished reading his first book, “This Can’t Be Happening at Macdonald
Hall” and we practiced making predictions and talked about components of a narrative text (characters, plot
setting, problem and solution) in this novel and had many laughs along with main characters, Bruno and
Boots! In guided reading small groups, we are continuing to work on fluency and comprehension skills as we
read books at individual reading levels. Keep up the good work with home reading! We have a snuggle up
and read day in December, check your calendars, and bring in a favourite seasonal picture book to share. In
December we will begin our first novel study of the year and students will be writing reading responses in
this unit.
In math, number of the day continues to be a classroom favourite! Ask your child to show you how we do it but this
comes with a warning….these kids are mathematicians! Many thanks to parents for helping out with telling time on
analogue clocks at home during our measurement unit. Our measurement unit is just wrapping up and we will be on
to a unit of study on Number Sense next. This unit will begin with reinforcing place value concepts (ones, tens, hun-
dred, thousands) and the value of numbers. We will be counting, adding and subtracting as well as comparing and or-
dering numbers. We will explore the concept of decimal tenths and money amounts. Many hands on activities and
investigations will take place. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of problem solving strategies. Students will
be eager to talk about real life connections with you at home. In Science we have completed the section on light and
will be having a unit test on Light. I will be sending students home with a “Study Buddy Guide” to help them prepare
for the test. Stay tuned for the date and look for the Study Buddy Guide to be stapled in the agenda. I know families
are busy, so I always give notice a full week in advance of a Science unit test and make sure they have their science
notes in their backpacks so they can prepare at home. This unit on Light and Sound is large, so I split it up. We are now
investigating how sound is made and have done experiments with elastics, rice on saran wrap, tuning forks and jars of
water to see how sound waves cause vibrations. It has been messy, but fun! The sound part of our unit will culmi-
nate with students making their own musical instruments!

Mrs. Robinson’s Grade 7/8 Class . .
English Update
Students are currently working on two different forms of writing: recount and narrative. They have almost com-
pleted their published copies of narrative stories (Gr. 7 Historical Fiction and Grade 8 Science Fiction) and have
created covers for them. We are now looking at Recount text forms and students will be creating photo essays of
a meaningful event in their lives. We have read a number of recounts and developed a list of success criteria for
them. We introduced the form by writing drafts of our trip to Toronto to see ‘Matilda: The Musical.’
Math Update
We have just started our Measurement unit. As described by John Van de Walle, the big ideas in measurement
are:
measurement involves a comparison of an attribute of an item with a unit that has the same attribute (lengths compare with lengths, areas with areas and time with time)
estimation of measures and development of benchmarks helps students increase their familiarity with units
area and volume formulas provide a method of measuring these attributes with only measurements of length
area, perimeter, surface area and volume are related
Students in grade 7 and 8 will be developing formulas for area of a trapezoid and area of a circle. This is the first time that they are introduced to those shapes.
We are still collecting items for our White Elephant Sale until December 9th. Our sale will take place on Wednes-day December 14th. Items are priced from $.25 to $10 for all students to purchase. Thank you for your support!
Clean Your Hands
Cleaning your hands is the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs. Regular hand cleaning with soap and water, or
an alcohol based hand sanitizer will reduce the risk of getting sick.
Cleaning your hands should occur:
Before preparing meals, before eating, after using the washroom, after coughing or sneezing, after blowing your nose,
after playing with pets, after playing outdoors
Use warm water and soap and lather and scrub for at least 15 seconds if your hands are visibly dirty.
For more information, talk to your school nurse or go to www.niagararegion.ca/health.
Mr.Lynett’s Grade 3 Class . . . In Language, we are continuing with making words ( Holiday big words for December). Spelling tests
continue every Friday. In Reading, we are looking at fiction and nonfiction and continuing to make con-
nections to what we are reading. Raz kids reading is available on-line and can be accessed through the
Winger school website. In Writing, we will continue to work on writing paragraphs and also begin letter
writing. In both reading and writing we are working on punctuation and how it can effect meaning.
In Math, we are beginning a numeration unit that includes numbers to 1,000. We will be composing and
decomposing numbers and also adding and subtracting numbers to 1,000. We will look at money
amounts to $10., including making change. Estimating will also be a focus. Work on number strings and
Dreambox also continues. We are continuing to review 3-D shapes and patterns. Look for weekly up-
dates on the Class Dojo.
