Dear Friends,
Christian Aid Week, 15-21 May, 2016 Jesus calls us to love our neighbours as ourselves and not just the ones next
door or down the street. During Christian Aid Week over 20,000 churches
put this love into action. Here in Burham and Wouldham we do house-to-
house collections.
Meet our neighbour Morsheda. Morsheda is a young mother in Bangladesh, living on a low-lying island in
the Brahmaputra River. Floods are a terrifying part of everyday life. One
year her house filled up to her knees with floodwater. To stay dry and keep
away from the snakes swimming through the house she raised her bed
upon bricks. During the night she was woken by a loud splash. Her baby
son had fallen into the water, and could have drowned in moments.
In a bad year, huge waves crashed against the house, giving her less than
an hour to gather her children and make a raft from a banana tree.
Morsheda lives a precarious life with the ever-present risk of flooding.
We can lift our neighbours like Morsheda to safety. £250 is enough for a Christian Aid Home Safety Package. It could flood
proof Morsheda’s home raising it eight foot on an earth plinth, so that she
has a safe place to rebuild, keep livestock and grow crops. It could also buy
a goat, seeds and a wormery for compost, all of which would give long-
term income and a solid foundation for a new life.
Please support Christian Aid Week with your prayers, by
giving in the house-to-house collections and also by being a
collector. Speak to Gwen on 01634 672060 if you would like to help.
In peace
Mike Hayes (Priest-in-Charge, Burham and Wouldham)

Energy Deal Scheme set to help residents save money
Tonbridge and Malling residents could save money on their energy bills
by taking part in the next round of Energy Deal – that’s the message from
Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, which launched the latest round
of the popular collective switching campaign on Tuesday 22 March.
Following the last round of the scheme, which was launched in
December last year, Tonbridge and Malling residents who signed up were
offered an average saving of £280.86 a year on their gas and electricity
bills.
Residents can register to take part in the latest round until Monday 16
May 2016. Energy suppliers will then be invited to compete with their
best offer at an energy auction on 17 May. Residents registered with
Energy Deal will be sent a personalised offer showing the winning tariff,
which they can then decide whether they want to accept.
Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council is working with Dover, Dartford,
Tunbridge Wells, and Gravesham councils to operate the scheme because
grouping together offers a straightforward solution for residents to find
out whether they can get a better deal and benefit by saving money on
their home energy bills. The more households that register, the more
interested the suppliers are in gaining them as customers and so the better
the deal they offer.
The scheme is open to all households using gas and electricity or
electricity only who pay monthly, quarterly or via a pre-payment meter.
It’s free to register and residents are not obliged to switch energy supplier.
Cllr Jill Anderson, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s Cabinet
Member for Housing and Environment Services, says: “Energy Deal
really is an easy way for residents to find out if they can reduce their
energy costs. It is particularly helpful for those who have never switched
before, as it offers a helping hand to guide them through the process. We
are pleased to continue to support this collective switching campaign,
which has already proved to be a success for many of our residents.”
For more information, or to register online, please visit
www.energydealswitch.com. Residents without internet access can call
Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council on 01732 876395 to register to be
part of the scheme.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
Public Inquiry: The written decision has now been received from the
Planning Inspectorate regarding the Orders to upgrade public rights of way
to Bridleways. They have advised that the orders should be confirmed
with some modifications in certain areas. The decision is an interim one
pending the modifications which will need to be advertised before a final
decision is made. This is very disappointing result for Burham Parish
Council and Trenport who worked very hard to convince the Inspector that
upgrading was not the right way forward
New Bridge: The opening is scheduled for mid-September, further
details will be available in due course.
BAM Nuttall have advised that there will be planting opposite the junction
of Church Street (previously 17 Elms) including rough grass, wild flora,
feathered trees and woodland. BAM Nuttall have also confirmed that the
two areas at the bottom of Church Street have been designated as “Horse
safety zones” enabling horses to cross New Court Road safely.
Due to information received, a rave, which was planned for in
Burham early March was foiled. Many agencies including the Police,
Trenport and Kent Wildlife Trust and others all worked together and
managed to prevent any rave taking place before lots of youngsters
descended on the area (over 1,600 people could have been in
attendance). Our thanks must be portrayed to those who assisted in
preventing this taking place.
Queen’s Birthday celebration: The Parish Council is happy to support any
event which is arranged by residents or local clubs.
Bluebell Hill Picnic Site: There is no further update on this with the
exception that KCC is seeking offers from other parties who will take
it over, look after it and keep it open and free to the public.
Parish Council vacancy: It is hoped that by the time, this edition of the
newsletter “hits the mats”, we will have filled the vacancy.
Highway Matters: Don’t forget if you see any highway problems ie
street lights on during the day or pot holes, give me a call (or e-mail
me) and I can log with KCC Highways.
If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss,
just give me a call on my new number 01634 685936, e-mail me on

AT THE HEART OF PETERS VILLAGE
Housebuilding at Peters Village began at the start of the year, and the next
step will be putting the heart into this new 1,000-home community on the
River Medway’s east bank near Wouldham.
This will be the ‘local centre’, a focal point comprising an attractive
village hall/community centre, four shops – including one designed as a
small supermarket – and a medical centre.
Peters Village developer Trenport expects this key element to be carried
out in stages, but hopes to start next year.
Trenport Director Chris Hall said: “Right from the start we decided that
Peters Village should not simply be another ‘housing estate’, but a
community where the new residents could find most of what they needed
right on their doorstep, rather than a few token facilities.
“Of course, we aimed for it to be well-connected too – that’s why the new
Medway bridge was vital to accessing the west bank of the river and
London – but good local amenities are what any mature community has,
and we wanted our young community to have the same benefits from the
start.”
Plans for the local centre have been developed by Trenport in close
collaboration with planners and ward councillors at Tonbridge & Malling
Borough Council.
Trenport Director Chris Hall added that both sides desired something
attractive yet practical and a genuine asset to the new community:
“We have set the bar high with the whole development, so the centre had
to be one of quality in design, but with all the convenience and
functionality required. There are, for instance, 40 parking spaces in front
of the shops.”
The retail element of the centre comprises three 87 sq-metre units, plus a
430 sq-metre supermarket – a size that pitches it somewhere between a
Tesco Express-size convenience store and the supermarket giant’s typical
Metro store.
Close to the shops there will also be a large village hall/community centre
with 43 parking spaces and scope to accommodate team minibuses,
complete with two sets of changing rooms for the nearby playing fields,
toilets, hall office and kitchen.
Also nearby, is an optional site for a police post and a new medical centre.
Chris Hall added: “We believe this is a first class development within the continued...........
15
continued............
overall scheme and
further magnet to housing
developers and their
customers, adding to the
dramatic transformation
and improvement of a
derelict eyesore, a brown
field site that once housed
the former Peters Lime
and Cement Works.”
He added, that the overall
community buildings
package also included a
new primary school
elsewhere on the
development

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School The school year advances rapidly and we’re now reaching the closing
stages of yet another year! In September there always appears to be a long
period before the final terms but now we’ve reached May that means
we’re into Term 5 with Term 6 at the start of next month!
This makes May a very busy month – partly because spring is a good time
for getting more done! The weather is hopefully fine with longer days to
enjoy being outside. The blossoming trees and flowers bring a brightness
which hopefully cheers us all up.
All of our younger years are studying ‘How does your garden grow?’
which is a wonderful opportunity to get outside and look at the marvels of
nature. We’ve also managed to get hold of some of Tim Peake’s space
seeds to take part in a large scale scientific study on the effect of weight-
lessness on seeds.
We’re also helping Winchester House with their garden revamp project
and we look forward to taking our children along to see the area develop
and blossom.
Older children are being ‘Really Wild’ and exploring the animal kingdom.
Last month they all enjoyed visiting Wingham Wildlife Park to get their
studies started. The work has been very interesting so far and we hope that
there could be a few vets in the making!
Science is such an important subject to explore and our themes for Term 5
are really opening up chances for the children to experience practical sci-
ence in action rather than just gaining knowledge.
May is also the time of National testing and we have new routines starting
this year! Year 6 have more challenging tests to complete during the week
beginning 9th May and Year 2 have a new range of tests to inform teacher
assessment to be completed during May. We aim to support our children
to achieve their very best in all of these activities.
We have also just been notified of those children being offered spaces for
Year R in September and we warmly welcome you into our family. At the
time of writing we have 29 places offered which means we have one space
avaialable should anybody require it. This space can be offered later in the
year according to our oversubscription criteria but please get in touch as
soon as possible should you need it!
May is Christian Aid month and we’re holding a short ukulele concert on
Wednesday 18th May from 1:30pm to try and raise some money for this
very worthwhile cause. If you can play a ukulele then why not come and
join us?

WINCHESTER HOUSE NURSING HOME, WOULDHAM Here at Winchester House, April was yet another busy month with a
spectacular performance by The Travellers; a Dutch choir who were doing
a tour of the South-East. It was a truly memorable day for us and we are
very grateful to the choir for sharing their amazing talent with us. We also
celebrated Volunteer Recognition Day with a cream tea, when we saluted
the band of volunteers who help us throughout the year. St Georges Day
celebrations went off with a bang with entertainment by Joy Dey with lots
of singing and flag waving!
Looking forward to this month, we shall be celebrating May Day, looking
back at our own May Day memories. We also continue working on our
community garden project with the help of our two wonderful local
primary school, we are very excited to be preparing for our Right Royal
Street Party in celebration of the Queen’s official 90th birthday, where
residents come together for this very special day.

May in Your Garden
‘‘Never yet was a Springtime, when the buds forgot to bloom.’
Now that the new gardening season is well & truly upon us, and the routine of
garden maintenance is at the fore, May is a time of new beginnings for those
perennial plants that had died back over the winter. By now gardens are looking
fresh and lively with all the new growth coming through, which makes it a good
time to think about making sure you’re giving your plants the best start, and
encouraging them to their best through the season. Most plants will benefit from
a top dressing of a slow release fertiliser over the next month – products such as
blood, fish & bone or chicken manure pellets all release nutrients slowly into the
soil to be taken up by your plants through the coming months. Using gloves,
scatter them over the soil (avoiding any fresh shoots) and around the base of
plants, not forgetting any pots that hold permanent displays.
It is also time to be potting up summer display plants & bulbs such as Dahlia,
Cannas and Begonia – place the bulbs & corms in large pots filled with a multi-
purpose compost, water in & protect from slug attack where possible, and by July
you should have a wonderful display. It’s also not too late to sow some flower
seed, either in seed trays for late summer flowers, or direct into the soil for early
summer plants. Cosmos, Calendula, Nicotiana, Antirrhinum (Snap Dragons) &
Nasturtiums will all provide summer colour and help to attract bees & other
beneficial insects. There’s are also lots of wildflower seed options available that
can be used to both provide colour and attract beneficial insects by providing a
native habitat that is now becoming more scarce.
Don’t forget as the month goes on to keep on top of dead-heading plants that have
gone over – removing faded flower-heads will encourage production of more
flowers. It can be a relaxing past time on a warm evening, with a glass of
something chilled in the other hand.
In the vegetable garden, now is the time to sow salads, courgettes, beans, beet-
root, carrots, parsnips etc. outside. Be creative with the planting, and choose to
plant the things that you like to eat, & most plants will happily squeeze in
amongst the garden plants so your garden becomes productive as well as
attractive.
Other things to be doing in the garden now:
Earth up potatoes
Tidy your shed, paint fences and furniture
Keep an eye on watering, pots will dry out
quickly on warm days
Tie in climbing plants
Don’t forget to hoe – it will help to keep the
weeds at a minimum.
