Dear Friends Now that Jennie has retired and left us, we miss her ‗thought of the month‘ in

this Magazine amongst many things. So this month it has fallen to me to find

some thoughts and words for this page. So get thinking for your contribution!

I‘m sure like me you are shocked to hear of people who are not being

cared for properly in some hospitals. Some of us may have relatives or

friends who have suffered some neglect either by not being adequately

nourished or bathed or feeling a lack of understanding or compassion when at

their most vulnerable. So many of our most vulnerable people are elderly and

it is saddening to think of their neglect.

Of course I know that a great many patients get good care and there are

marvellous, compassionate nurses who care a great deal. I‘m a nurse myself

(retired now) but I am very concerned about the lack of compassion in some

nurses. I‘m sure we can find causes in faults in the selection of some nurse

entrants and in nurse training but can that be the whole story? I wonder

whether some nurses‘ values don‘t also reflect those of society in general.

I reflect on whether society in general properly values and respects elderly

people. How much do we look out and care for our neighbour and do we

ourselves show the compassion and respect that we expect in our hospitals?

On another subject, you will see in this Magazine that the Churches

Conservation Trust, a national charity which cares for old St Mary‘s Church

in Burham, needs to raise tens of thousands of pounds to repair stone work.

These lovely old churches are a spiritual focus for our community and are

admired as part of our English landscape. They have been cared for and

repaired by each generation over many, many years—old St Mary‘s being

Norman and our Burham & Wouldham Parish Church, All Saints in

Wouldham dating back at least to Saxon times. All Saints has just completed

extensive repairs and refurbishment made possible by a generous donor and a

few years earlier there were other extensive repairs paid for then from

donations, fundraising and grants. Each and every year also, to keep All

Saints open with it‘s bills paid and working as it should be with a Rector,

donations are needed month after month.

We carry on repairing our old English churches as our forbears have

done over the centuries so that we have a spiritual place for our baptisms,

marriages, funerals, festivals and our daily worship but the financial

commitment is always very challenging. Sadly when we look around the

country, many of our old churches have closed for want of funding to keep

them working as they should be.

………….... just some thoughts from me for this month. Mary Davis

Church Electoral Roll - This needs to be updated each year before the

Annual Parish Meeting. If you have attended any Services at All Saints

Church, Wouldham or the Messy Church in Burham and would like to be on

the Electoral Roll, please contact Heather Lloyd, tel 01634-863345 as soon as

possible. Members on the Electoral Roll are entitled to nominate and vote for

the Churchwardens and members of the Church Council.

Church seating. It has been agreed that the pews in Wouldham should have

some cushioning on the seats! Many years ago a similar project took place

for the kneelers. I am hoping that a small group of parishioners might be

interested in joining me in making some of these pew runners. The work

involves simple wool tapestry and requires no experience. Anyone interested

can contact me Heather Lloyd by 'phone 01634-863345 and come along on

7th February to 40 Downs View, Burham (or just come along) at 7pm.

WOMEN‘S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

7.00pm, 2nd March

Burham Methodist Church

On the theme of ‗Let Justice Prevail‘

The Women‘s World Day of Prayer aims to demonstrate that both prayer

and action on this theme can have an immeasurable influence in the world.

On the first Friday of March in services all over the world, this year

Malaysia becomes the focus of prayer and understanding.

Through participation in the worship service, women worldwide learn how

their sisters of other countries, languages and cultures understand the biblical

passages in their context. They learn of the concerns and needs of women in

that country and to empathize and feel togetherness with them.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Firstly, the Parish Council would like to wish all residents a Happy (if

somewhat belated) New Year.

New non emergency contact number for the Police is now 101. 101 will

offer the public one easy way to contact Kent Police to report non

emergency crimes and replaces the 01622 690690. 101 is available 24 hours

a day, seven days a week, and no call will cost more than 15p (even from a

mobile).

It is sad to report that vandalism occurred to the lights to the Christmas tree,

not just once but three times. The first time being just after installation, the

second between Christmas and the New Year and the 3rd time was New

Years Eve. This is very disappointing to have to report and such a shame as

the Tree did look fantastic with all the lights glowing in the dark and was

there for all the community to enjoy.

Trenport is continuing with general landscape maintenance works through-

out the winter months which, in some cases, involves heavy machinery, e.g.

at Peters Wharf.

A ―Local Letting Policy‖ for Wouldham, Eccles and Burham is now in

place. Basically, person/persons with local connections and that are on the

existing Council housing list can add housing points by listing their

connections to the village. A bidding process together with the points system

increases the likelihood of being housed locally. Please contact the local

Borough Councillors (Dave Davis 01634 869650/Roger Dalton 01634

867281) for more information.

Don‘t forget, the new website is up and running: Burhamvillage.org. Here

your find out what‘s going on within the village, social events, meetings,

minutes from Parish Meetings etc. It‘s all now listed.

If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss, just

give me a call on 01622 609324, e-mail me on [email protected] or

come along to the monthly meetings, normally held the last Monday of the

month. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 27 February 2012, 7.30

pm in the Old School Community Centre, Corner of Rochester Road/Bell

Lane. Pam Saunders - Clerk

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School

2012 is a memorable year for many reasons. The Olympics will be here

before we know it and there will be lots of excitement affecting the area. We

also have the Jubilee celebrations in June and this too will be something

marked in different ways. As in all things and events in life we can choose

to mark them as special and celebrate accordingly or we can ignore them

and carry on as normal! Whether we feel a particular affinity to sport and

the Olympics or whether we are Royalist or not doesn‘t really matter as we

should take time out to consider how remarkable and rare these events are.

They are wonderful opportunities for people to come together, to work

together, to plan together and most importantly of all – to have a good time

together. A sense of community is all about being together, watching out for

and then looking after each other. Community is about recognising the value

of everyone and not putting your own interests above everyone else.

We seem to be short of volunteers in our community, people who will

champion Wouldham and help make it an even better place to live and

work. Maybe you agree? If so, why not try hard to do something about it

and offer some time for working within the village to do something for

others. This may be for the school or may be something completely

separate. Can we make 2012 the year of action and celebration and create a

network of committed people and activities that benefit everyone, building

respect, trust and a sense of pride. If so, what a legacy there will be for all of

our children.

School events to mark both the Jubilee and the Olympics are being planned

and organised. We‘ll let you know more next month!

Happy New Year from the children, staff and governors at Burham CE

Primary School.

We hope everyone enjoyed a safe and happy Christmas break and I wonder

how many New Year resolutions have been broken by now!

We started our year by welcoming 4 new children and their families to our

school and hope that by now they have settled in well and enjoying all the

experiences on offer.

We‘d like to take you back to a cold Monday at the beginning of December.

As agreed by our joint school council enterprises with Wouldham we joined

the ‗Love Where You Live‘ project and decided that our first activity would

be a local litter pick. Tamsin Ritchie (our local Environmental Projects

Coordinator) and David Liepnik (Community Warden) joined our school

council, Mrs Waller (School Council Chair) and myself as we walked up to

Burham Recreation Ground to carry out our activity. Tamsin had brought

along all the necessary equipment: litter pickers and Hi Vis tabards which the

children felt gave a real sense of importance to the task. The children

thoroughly enjoyed their time and needed lots of arm waving to come back

together! They were so motivated that they asked to continue litter picking

during playtime back at school.

Here they are – what a great team! Michelle Grima - Headteacher

Low Energy Light Bulbs

Low energy light bulbs should be

recycled because the are classed as

hazardous waste. They contain

minute quantities of mercury,

normally no more than 4mg/bulb

and not dangerous to human health.

In larger quantities they could pose a

risk to the environment and therefore

should be recycled sustainably.

TMBC have recently introduced

recycling banks for low energy light

bulbs at 5 main recycling sites.

Locally the bulbs will be collected

and recycled safely by Recolight at:

Sainsbury, Quarry Wood.

The bank is not suitable for

recycling fluorescent tubes which

should not be placed next to the new

bulb banks. Instead they should be

taken to the nearest Household

Waste Recycling Centre for

disposal.

Help save two historic Kent Churches!

The Churches Conservation Trust, a national charity

which cares for over 340 historic churches at risk,

including 17 in Kent, needs to raise funds for two

local projects.

At Cooling, famous as the setting from the opening scene of Charles

Dickens` Great Expectations, the charity wishes to install new interpretation

panels for visitors in this, the bicentenary of the author`s birth.

At Burham an isolated riverside church dating from the Norman period,

over £100,000 needs to be spent on stonework repairs in the next few years.

To raise funds for these two projects a SPONSORED ABSEIL will be held

at St Mary, Burham on Saturday 17th March 2012. We hope that many

local residents will take part in this exciting challenge to raise funds to help

us look these two amazing buildings.

The abseil will be great fun, and full training will be given on the day.

Sponsorship Forms will be distributed in the village over the next few weeks

and we are hoping that all 100 places on the abseil will be filled.

Further information is available from 07850 003751.

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL

Happy New Year Everyone! Hope you had a lovely Christmas!

At the January Parish Council Meeting, the crime report detailed just one

crime in the Village – which was theft from the allotments. So it is good to

note that the Christmas and New Year period was a peaceful one.

There is some exciting news to report about

Broadband speed! The necessary fibre optics have

already been laid in Burham and we have it on good

authority that faster internet access will be with us

by March!

Something

that may slow

you down a

little though -

are the road

works in

Aylesford

High Street-

which will be shut for 8 weeks. This

work is highly necessary in order to

prevent serious flooding – so please be

patient and use an alternative route if possible.

Finally, please do not hesitate to let us know if

you notice streetlights that need repairing,

uneven paving or any other maintenance issues

as you are going about the village. Together we

can all help to look after our lovely Village.

There is not much else to report this month! The

Council will be meeting on 17th January for the

annual precept meeting – so expect details of the

outcome in the next magazine!
